I'm not sure if the dude with the cowboy hat is the owner or not. I don't believe he is. He is a total jerk -- unfortunately I work near the restaurant. He is not only rude to his customers, but rude to his neighbors as well. I mean "f'ing" rude, to use his favorite word. I also know that he feeds animals right outside his kitchen door, and leaves the kitchen door open most of the time. I have seen squirells INSIDE of his kitchen, munching away. He has troubles keeping employees because he's such a jerk.

In a nutshell, EVERYTHING you read below THIS review is totally true! Before I went, I found it hard to believe an owner (Antonio Carafeli, the "white cowboy hatted" guy that apparently REALLY IS the owner) would be THAT rude to customers. It is a freak show in there, he IS that rude and MORE! He's like the soup nazi, but with overpriced schizophrenic latin food that actually tastes cheap and liquidy. The Burrito Nazi?! Be careful what you say and do, lest you be told "get the F___ out!" If you "get" to stay, expect to be on the toilet for 2 hours later if you eat the runny, grainy ground beef, try it wrapped in a soggy relleno. Or try the soaked yet dry, starchy(old?) whole beans and tasteless, rubbery mystery white shred cheese (queso? NO WAY!). Just why ARE the portions so big (except for the $30 entrees)? Because its cheap food and maybe people won't complain if they got a big portion? If you don't believe me order one! The "salad" is a ton of shredded iceberg and lunchroom style diced tomatoes (should tomatoes be translucent and chewy?) with what tastes like thousand island dressing with a bit of soggy cilantro on top. I've eaten in latin countries, its NOT authentic or tasty! PHEW...did I mention the owner was unsanitary, loud-mouthed, yelled at a customer AND a female employee while I was there and talked about how he "wanted out of the restaurant business?!" NOW it all makes sense...AVOID a conflict, a stomach ache and possibly contracting e coli- go to El Jalapenos! Its not worth it, even with the painfully entertaining "Burrito Nazi!" Unless you bring your own bottle of open liquor to make your own marg, which he told someone was OK to do. Wow.

First off, thanks for sharing your experiences. I have been there at least 4 or 5 times but it was always the same, I'd place my order over the phone and pick it up on my way home. I've never sat down and dines so I haven't witnessed any of this but now I'm throughly grossed out with the recycled horror stories. I won't be going back there again. 1 bad review could be a vendetta, but more than 1 and it's got be something of substance behind the complaints.

First of all, any positive review about this place must have been written by the owner or someone related to him. I will admit the food is pretty decent, but the owner and many of his employees are insanely rude and unprofessional. We have ordered from here several times and have never walked away thinking okay this guy is at least trying. He is rude and doesn't care about his patrons. I don't know why we have given him more than one chance. One particular evening we ordered take out and when we got home we realized that the order was incorrect so we called and originally wanted to just have our order redone until they were so rude on the phone. We then asked if we could just return the product and we were hung up on!!! The staff is impolite on the phone and in the restaurant. We will never go there again. This place should be out of business-do not support this establishment. We went there with a big party about 20 people, the place was empty and the owner tells us we can't take over the whole restaurant. There was no one else in the restaurant. He eventually realized that if we would have each walked in individually that it would have been the same thing a busy night! He should be happy about that. We spent upwards of $300 that evening and at the end of the night we were taking a picture in the front of the restaurant, the owner came out and got in the picture!! He didn't ask to be in it or offer to take the picture for the group. I don't even think he knows he's rude. This place has the worst customer service imaginable!!! Go somewhere else!

MY HUSBAND AND I DECIDED TO DINE IN
ONE EVENING AFTER WE FIRST MOVED TO LAKEWOOD. THIS ESTABLISHMENT SURE DIDN'T GIVE US A WARM, WELCOME FEELING. THE FOOD IS GOOD, HOWEVER, THE MANAGEMENT AND STAFF
ARE DEFINITELY NOT UP TO PAR. WE WAITED ABOUT AN HOUR FOR OUR FOOD. (OBVIOUSLY MEXICAN FOOD DOESN'T TAKE THIS LONG). WHAT'S EVEN WORSE IS THEY HARDLY HAD ANY CUSTOMERS AND THEY DON'T HAVE A LIQUOR LICENSE TO SERVE ALCOHOL WHILE YOU ARE HUNGRY AND PATIENTLY AWAITING YOUR GRUB. (WTF?)WHEN MY HUSBAND AND I WERE READY TO LEAVE WE HAD KINDLY ASKED FOR A BOX. THE OWNER RUDELY INSULTED US BY RESPONDING WITH "THEY ARE BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT," THEREFORE HE WOULD GIVE US FOIL INSTEAD. WE WERE PERPLEXED BY THESE COMMENTS B/C THE OWNER HAD BOXES AVAILABLE AND REFUSED
TO GIVE US ONE. WE HAD ASKED HIM TO SIMPLY
GIVE US THE FOIL AND WE WOULD WRAP
OUR FOOD OURSELVES. HE INSISTED UPON
DOING IT WHICH MADE FOR AN UNCOMFORTABLE
ENVIRONMENT AND SNATCHED OUR PLATES AWAY. IF THIS IS THE OWNERS IDEA OF CUSTOMER SERVICE, THEN HE WILL HAVE
A DIFFICULT TIME MAINTAINING WORTHY PATRONAGE.
DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME ON THIS PLACE. INSTEAD TRY LUCHITA'S, JOHNNY MANGO, OR ZOCALO IF YOU WANT TO SPEND A PRETTY BUCK. (THEY ARE MORE PRICEY FOR MEXICAN FOOD, BUT HAVE EXCELLENT FOOD AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, TEQUILA!) IF YOU WANT A STEAL
OF A DEAL TRY EL RODEO OR NUEVO ACAPULCO
IN NORTH OLMSTED.

What a wonderful experience! We went for my daughter's birthday and it was perfect- the decor transforms you to another place, the food is not only generous but shockingly tasty. I lived in Denver for years and never had food this authentic there. I have, however, visited Mexico and it reminded me of it! The salsas are amazing, the variety will please everyone. Truly gourmet and the service was comfortable and kind yet professional. These people care about what they do. LOVED IT and will be a regular if Joe, the chef, continues to wow us with fantastic food and service!

Can I give it 0 stars? Read all the other reviews on unsanitary conditions and re-using of food!

We had not been to this place for 2 years because it is very overpriced. We decided to give it 1 more chance. We ordered our entre's and when my wife asked me what I wanted to drink, I said I'll just have a glass of water. The owner said he no longer gives out free water because he doesn't want to wash that many glasses (he actually said it). I then told my wife I won't get a soda - I would just wait until we left to drink the one I had in the car. the owner than butted in and told me you can't bring drinks in. I said that I would drink it when we left. He then told us that if I woudn't get a water just because I have to pay for it now then we could get out of his restaurant- he didn't want our business. He doesn't have to worry about that!!!!
This guy (the disgusting cowboy hat totin' owner) is certifiable. With the enormous volume of bad reviews, he reminds me of Richard Pryor in Brewsters Millions (where Pryor has to deliberately lose all his worldly possessions). This owner appears to be diliberately trying to ruin his business - how can a person not know any better?
The place was empty at dinner time - I wonder why? The owner is the definition of a person that should not own business.

If I could give this place NO STARS I would!!!!

El Tango Taqueria may have the best Mexican style food in Lakewood but... BEWARE!!!! The food is prepared under highly unsanitary kitchen conditions. The owner is so cheap he doesn't even provide detergent to properly clean the dishes and also reuses food! Instead of throwing away salsa already used by one customer; the owner scoops what's left into a new dish and serves the reused salsa to new customers!

If that's not disgusting enough, don't expect professional customer service here either. Check out some of the other horror stories and bad reviews detailing the unsatisfactory experiences of other customers. Don't waste your time or money on this shady restaurant... you might regret it once you get sick because your meal was prepared by the most unhealthy standards in the city.

* Pros: Good Food
* Cons: Unsanitary Kitchen, Horrible Service & Cheap Owner

Fantastic place. Amazed every time I go. For years I've been heading there to enjoy their burritos, tacos, etc which are great, but the last time I went, I got one of the other "dinner" dishes, and was blown away

I'm sad to see so many people write bad reviews of this place because I had a great experience. I hadn't been there before, so I asked the man behind the counter (think he was the owner) what he recommended, which was the California Lime Avocado Burrito, so I ordered one with chicken and the Vanilla Limeade. Both were fantastic. The burrito was HUGE (made Chipotle's look small) and was filled to bursting. I felt ill by the end because I just couldn't put my fork down! And the Vanilla Limeaid was delicious, though really sweet, so brace yourself. It bummed me out that the only pop offered was in cans, because I tend to drink a lot at meals, but the limeade was pretty large, so I made due. I would say it's really more Californian Mexican rather than authentic Mexican, but I actually prefer those flavors, so I was happy. The dining room's pretty small, so ordering take out might be a good idea and parking is very limited, so beware. Overall it was a great experience and I hope that I don't have any of the problems in the future other people had, because I fully intend on going back!

It is sad that after a customer for 5+ years I was told by the cowboy owner the well get the __ out!! A few weeks ago the owner instructed his cook to to stop using plates for server tacos and to place them in paper line, plastic baskets in order to save money. Yes, I'm sure it save money but it truly takes away from the wonderful food that he makes. Given that a taco is almost $4 this is not a freaking taco bell, nor other fast food joint.

I came in to tell him what my feeling of the baskets and paper were and he did not want to hear it... I brought me own plate to eat off of and he was mad... It is his business and he can surely run it as he wishes, but what's sad is he did not care about my opinion, just trying to tell me it all about saving water.

So ends a 5+ year relationship. I will miss the cook Mr. G.T.

The only reason I am taking the time to review this restaurant is because my experience was THAT BAD. The problems involved are threefold:

1) the manager does not know how to respect customers or deal with them in a civilized manner and
2) they refuse to even provide water and offer only a handful of canned sodas.
3) if A=A, a taco is a taco - they should not be 3 or 5 dollars.

I went to Tango Taqueria with a friend, and after spending $25 on tortilla chips, 2 tacos, and a burrito, we decided it would be best to purchase a jug of water from the convenience store down the road rather than having to buy another bottle of water whenever we ran out. I drink a LOT of water. Apparently, because the owner mysteriously cannot come into possession of a liquor license, it is supposed to be common knowledge that BYOB is acceptable but any other liquids are not. After we went and purchased water elsewhere, and were waiting for our food, the manager came over and started yelling at us. Since his policy on beverages is basically "fend for yourself" we didn't even know there would be a problem. Instead of asking us not to bring anything but liquor next time, he simply started screaming at us. It was absurd. We had to ask for our food to go and it was all very awkward and inappropriate. The food really isn't bad, but I will never return knowing that the owner really does not care about customer satisfaction, but only milking them for all their worth. For those who would claim that this is my fault, and not that of the owner, I would ask you to provide justification for any restaurant owner who cannot provide paying customers with ice water and does not respect them enough to refrain from verbally assaulting them.

Overall:
Atmosphere: Pleasant
Food: OK
Prices: Not Worth It
Management: HA!

Firstly I would consider this place more Californian than Mexican. The dishes are tasty but overpriced in my opinion. I like the fact that they serve 3 kinds of salsa instead of just 1. I don't really want to pay over $10 for a burrito, granted it is a lot of food but it would be cheaper and just as good at a more authentic Mexican place. The food does seem very fresh though. Also if you want a coke, do not expect refills as they are only served in cans.

The service is not the greatest as they forgot to bring out our chips and salsa before our meal. It is also a little cramped during peak hours. The ambience is nice and a good place for a date, but probably not for kids.

Some of you people need to stop whining. Good lord. This is the best Mexican food on the near west side -- we eat there probably once a week and have never witnessed any of the things you say supposedly happened during your visit there. El Tango's food is amazing, reasonably priced and head and shoulders above the competition. The vanilla limeade alone makes it worth a trip, let alone the food. I think I could probably eat the salsas alone as a meal -- and the tomato lime soup is heavenly. Even if you hate sweet potatoes, the tequila lime sweet potatoes will have you salivating for more. In short, this restaurant is amazing, and people like you are the reason why we can't have nice things in Cleveland.

Pros: Ambience, food

Cons: Parking

We went to this restaurant and let me tell you, I would rather eat dog food off of a homeless man's belly than eat here again. After the owner wiped his nose with his bare hand and went back to cooking someone's food (as it wasn't mine, I was only there 15 minutes at that point) I thought, maybe he'll get better by the time he gets to my order. Well, between him being gross and disgusting, he was staring at my wife. Not just looking at her, but undressing her in a way that made her feel violated. I politely told him that I was leaving and wouldn't need my order to be made, but he told me it was nearly done. After overhearing the chef say to the owner "I stirred this with my (umm...male appendage?)" we got out of there.

El Crapo Craperia is the worst alleged mexican food I have ever come across. I ordered take-out and saved myself the trouble of listening to the owner yell at his employees. When I got home the food was cold and someone or something had taken a bite out of my burrito! I was so disgusted that I gave it the burrito to my dog. But even my dog refused to eat it, and he eats his own poop!

Upon spending over $10 for food AND a beverage, my daughter requested a glass of water (in addition to her lemonade) with her meal, my daughter was refused any water. She really needed some water and so she decided to get some water from the ladies bathroom to take a pill. The manager came out and threatened to throw her and her friends off the premises unless she gave up her cup of water. Note - her friends had also spent almost 10 each so they were not deadbeat customers or loitering.
I think this is shameful and in very bad form for a restaurant to refuse a paying customer a glass of water, especially when the customer had already purchased a beverage.
I consider this type of treatment just as indicative and important as the food and service when assessing a restaurant or any other type of establishment.
We will never eat at this restaurant, again.

My fiance and I ate here for the first time this past weekend. We'd heard nothing but great things about the food but no one told us what do do when we walked in so we kind of just stood there looking confused! Luckily the drill was explained to us by a man who I assumed was the owner. He was really friendly and upbeat, which usually annoys me but not here--his enthusiasm seemed sincere and genuine. We were slightly disappointed to find out that they didn't serve alcohol, but I had the iced tea and it was absolutely delicious. Now that we know it's BYOB, I'm sure we'll be taking advantage of that! The decor was really unique and interesting, and we liked the fact that the dining area was small and UNcrowded (Saturday night at 6:30pm, and we were the only ones in the dining room, though several groups came in for carryout while we were there)
I ordered the California Avocado-Lime burrito with fish. It was the absolute best burrito in the entire world. I'm a Chipotle nut, but I'm not sure I can go back there now after eating this burrito! I'm still dreaming about it, and probably will until I go back and eat another one!
When we left, the three employees who were there gave us a friendly thank you and good night, as if we had been coming there every day for years. It was really nice. I definitely recommend it.

My experience at this place was horrible. My friend took me there, swearing it would become my new favorite restaurant. I actually do really love Mexican food, but I have to say this was the worst, ever! We sat at the counter by the window, and there were so many flies that I lost my appetite. I mean, there were hundreds of them just swarming around the brightly lit Neon signs. It was a warm night, so they had the doors propped open, for all the bugs to enter. Gross. I will never, ever return! Save your money. I would never recommend this place.

Best food in Lakewood, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County and beyond. I cannot believe this place still has seating available on Friday Nights. People in Cleveland accept mediocre food and I have eaten plenty of it since coming to the area. But Tango is bar none the best food I have eaten anywhere in Cleveland. They could double the prices on the menu and I'd still go back. Oh yeah, it's BYOB so as the owner tells me "bring as much as you can carry." My wife and I are now lifelong customers at Tango.

This great little gem on Madison in Lakewood serves unique Mexican, Southwestern, Cuban, Latin American food. This is not your typical Mexican restaurant with tacos & burritos. They serrve delicious, unique dishes prepared with only the freshest ingredients. My personal favorite dish is the Ropa Vieja. Some other favorites are their unique (and huge!) quesadillas and the fish tacos. They also have great housemade salsas and guacamoles. Finally, they do not have a liquor license but you are allowed to bring in your own beverages. There is no corkage fee. I gurantee you will go home satisfied and stuffed!

There are few restuarants that are as outstanding as El Tango Taqueria. In spite of what one bitter customer is spreading on the Internet, the restuarant is clean, friendly and serves some of the best food in the Cleveland area. (It should be noted that health inspectors are some of the most loyal customers.)
The specials change frequently, so you can eat something different everyday you visit. I have eaten at El Tango Taqueria on several occasions and haven't decided what I like the best. The burrito was outstanding and large enough for a large eater like myself to have leftovers.
If you are one who likes the mass produced Mexican food that is everywhere in the United States, then this probably isn't your place. They don't serve hot sauce in small plastic packages. But if you are someone who likes to try varied and unique foods, El Tango Taqueria is the place for you. Don't be discouraged by one review from someone who should have stuck to Taco Bell.

Don't eat at El Tango unless you want a nice case of Hepatitus. I saw the owner himself remore half eaten salsa cups from a table and then pour the remains into new cups, which he then tried to serve to me! I looked over the counter and would you believe it- There were ten or fifteen half used salsas sitting there waiting to be re-used! I have already called the health dept. but who knows if they will catch him doing it or not. I don't know if they have "health spies" which is what they would need- but if you don't believe me, just peer over the counter (it's an open kitchen) and see for yourself!
God knows what else he re-uses. This place is revolting. Never, never eat here.

My daughter took my grandson and I to eat supper at this place.

I am very serious when I say it was not edible. My grandson ordered a breakfast burrito and it tasted nasty.

She paid about $30.00 for the meal. The dining room was not clean...tables not prepped, dirty. We asked if we could have some hot sauce and they told us that they charge for that...$ .75. I think they are trying to be just a little upscale mexican but the effect was "yuppie" and no taste.

The place was empty and I assume it will stay that way.

Nasty, nasty, nasty! I will warn everyone I know.

Our poetry circle (18 people - we had no problems with music either) met at El Tango and found the atmosphere and service to be outstanding. The food is bar none the best Mexican this side of the Rockies.

The Cowboy makes the tastiest, freshest salsa that I have found in any restaraunt. Recommended: anything on the menu with a focus on the Tortas! Especially the Franciscan Fish Torta.

This is a cool *little* restaurant with really great tasting food. However, if you request to have no cheese or other dairy, beware...I did this, I saw the guy write it down on our order. It came to me with cheese on it and possibly the chipotle cream sauce as well. At first I could not tell if there was cheese on it or not. I unfortunately shared it with my 2 1/2 yr old son who is allergic to dairy(I mentioned that when ordering as well). My son had a severe reaction to the small amount of cheese that he got and fortunately the reaction was controlled with medicine. Just beware and inspect your food very carefully before eating. I made this mistake, I hope you don't. BTW we waited for more than 45 minutes for our food.

The first time I ate here I thought it was a little peculiar, but I went back today and now that I know the drill (ordering at the counter, paying for extras, etc) I really enjoyed it. The food is wonderful, vegetarian friendly, and of very high quality. Even the iced tea is good. I'm so glad this place exists near Cleveland and I highly recommend it for brunch or a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon.

The food is great but the service is not. We often find the staff not happy to see customers and an experience this week made us feel unwelcome. The staff refused to reduce the level of the music for our group to have a conversation, even though we were the only patrons. The music was TOO LOUD! After three requests we were told that they could not change the "concept" of the restaurant for a few (8) people.

Today at work we went to a quaint little Mexican joint and had lunch. It was DA BOMB. You pay for everything in the place... But it's worth it. Tortilla Chips made from... frying tortillas... Fish tacos.... Burritos the size of a child's head... Everything was quite yummy...

And then I saw the desert special... Apple Jalapeno pie with ice cream.

Ok... how to begin... it looks like apple pie, with small green bits. Then ice cream on top and something drizzled over it. Yeah... the drizzle is the shizzle... Honey... infused with cinnamon and jalapeno. Oh... My... God. It was wonderful.

I know my wife can make this even better... And we've got a lot of apples. Just gotta find the peppers. :)

It was a happy lunch.

PROS: Tasty, quaint, authentic
CONS: Pricey drinks, slow service.

That's all we eat there (we've tried the other stuff - but) -> every Saturday at lunch (almost).

Great salsas (3 types), and all the items have a mix of subtle but varying flavors.

Make sure the owner is cooking (cowboy hat, white t-shirt) - the food is not the same when it is one of his assistants. The food is worth the wait.

I went to El Tango Taqueria today after reading some reviews. I have been looking for some good mexican Enchilada's for awhile. I walked in and sure enough.... there was the owner in his white cowboy hat. I smiled. I ordered my food at the counter and sat down. Great music, clean, great atmosphere which surprised me from the outside. A great little place! The food arrived in about 5 minutes... looked great... but tasted incredible! Every bite was different and I just couldn't stop! Spicey, sweet... even a small taste of Spearmint? With every bite I tasted something different! Two wonderful beef stuffed enchiladas with Salsa Salad, beans, and rice. I was very happy and loved the fact that it is only a mile from my home!
