Hello Virtual World!

I have a history of working with Kenpo Karate and exceptional instructors. My son was signed up by my wife - I was skeptical.

When I stopped by to evaluate the program I discovered three essential elements: 1) Focus on developing self-esteem, 2) Focus on developing life skills, and 3) Focus on symmetrical development of the student. Master Taningco is a man of integrity, insight, and an accomplished martial artist.

My son has grown in his art, focus, and discipline. He is NOT the exception he is the rule. Parents remark that "the environment helps them and their children".

I have been an instructor (elementary, high school & college-level) and I have a keen awareness for instructors who are professional and effective. The program that is proliferated at TAMA is professional, effective, and endorsed by parents like myself.

Join the fun! "Character is built here."

NOTE: The support personnel treat each person with respect and care. They endeavor to create a FAMILY atmosphere. Bring your family to the TAMA Family.

I have been training with Master Taningco for close to six years. I started in the Muay Thai program and began training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as well for the last year and a half. I have been assisting in teaching the Muay Thai classes for the last four years.

I have trained with men and women of all ages and backgrounds. Master Taningco does a great job of tailoring instruction to the needs of the individual, bringing beginners up to speed quickly while giving the more advanced students higher level techniques and competitive sparring opportunities. I have had the chance to train and train with individuals looking to step into the ring in competitive Muay Thai. Master Taningco trains his fighters to be ring ready using the full size boxing ring for both training and holding tournaments in the school. With years of full contact fighting experience himself, Master Taningco is great with getting newer students confident and ready for their first fights as well as honing techniques for more experienced fighters.

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a great program as well, with very knowledgeable instructors with years of competition experience and self defense training. I have taken part in several tournaments and there is a great team camaraderie with everyone that trains there no matter how long they have been there. The live sparring we do at every class allows students to test their skills and knowledge first hand. The instructors and experienced students are always giving pointers and advice to less advance students during sparring, elevating the skill of the entire team.

In addition to training in Muay Thai and BJJ I also regularly spar full contact with students from other arts including Kempo and Kung Fu, from beginners to black belts. This allows students to test their abilities across multiple disciplines to see how the different styles stack up. With the diverse backgrounds of students you can always find a pace of sparring that matches your comfort level, from light contact with beginner and younger students to heavier full contact with the upper belts (including several black belts) and competition minded students.

I would highly recommend Master Taningco to anyone looking to get into martial arts no matter what their background is. Master Taningco and his supporting instructors and students can provide a high level of training for everyone.

The owner, Manuel Taningco honed his fighting skills as a kid on the streets of Manila and later refined them under a number of instructors. Following the lead of his hero Bruce Lee, he studied a number of different arts throughout the years offering programs in many of them including Filipino martial arts, kenpo karate, kung fu, muay thai, akijujitsu, and BJJ. Most of the students also learn practical self defense techniques which pull the best ideas from all the arts taught at the school.

While the focus for most students isn't on full contact fighting, the BJJ and muay thai programs train students for fights in various rules systems. Students have fought and performed will in BJJ, open grappling, muay thai, san shou, and lei tai. This varied environment allows students to cross train with a variety of martial artists to expand the breadth of their knowledge making it a great location for amateur MMA fighters to train. This environment has been around for decades, even before MMA was a generally recognized sport.

Taningco is also an excellent teacher for children. He is patient and has an excellent rapport with the kids and the adults. A core of dedicated assistant instructors teach some of the classes but the master generally attends at least one class a week for each discipline, often more.

Since this is for profit business and the livelihood of Manuel Taningco, prices are not as low as they would be at a local YMCA or part time not for profit school, but this also means that Taningco dedicates all his time to the school and the students instead of having to split it with another career.

Pretty expensive for Kenpo Karate. No real BJJ there either, more a mix of Dumog and Danzan Ryu Jujutsu. Even though Tama's has affiliated themselves with Luiz Palhares. Also add to the fact that the owner, Manuel Taningco, while certified Muay Thai instructor in the United World Muay Thai Association, Taningco has never fought under Muay Thai rules or been a full-contact fighter.

Now if you're looking something for your kids to develope focus and what not, then the Kids Kenpo there is pretty good. Taningco is excellent with instructing children, just realize though that it is a belt factory. It really depends on what you want out of your martial arts.

Pricing though is not surprising when you take into account that Tama is not a non-for-profit...this is his business and livelihood. There are some good folks there, but it still a McDojo. That is they have long-term contracts, a Black Belt Club (3 year contract) and your are really pressured to buy your equiment through their pro-shop. Their are annual and bi-annual price increases and limited floor space with the different martial arts styles there.

I was a student at Tama Martial Arts from March 2005 through March 2007. I was a white belt in their Dumog/Jujitsu system and a Blue belt in the Kenpo Jujitsu/Karate system.

This is a good place to go if you want to learn martial arts. They offer classes from beginner to advanced for nearly all ages, and the staff is very knowledgeable. I have only taken kickboxing classes, but friends who have taken others (i.e. karate) say they are good also.
