My daughter started this summer and LOVES it. I was worried with some of the other reviews I read with Ms. Yvonne being too tough on the kids, but she is not at all...she comes off a little tough in her demeanor but even my daughter can tell she is just being silly. My daughter LOVES Ms. Yvonne and talks about her daily!

My 3 year old just started at Yvonne's Dance Studio this past year and she loves it! We are there every week and I can say I have never seen or heard anything bad from Yvonne or anyone else for that matter. My daughter loves her ballet/tap teacher Megan, and would go everyday if she could. For me and my daughter, it has been a good experience so far.

Miss yvonne has taught both my girls ages 6 and 14 for the past 3 years and i can say that out of all the dance studios they have attended hers is the best. Yvonne goes up and beond what is excpected of her as a dance instructor. I know for a fact that if a student isn't able to afford lessons or costums she will not charge them and she will use her own money to buy their costums. She takes a personal intrest in all her students handing out much needed advice. She is a very dedicated teacher and wonderful person and i'm glad my girls have had a chance to dance. under her instruction.

Not only does Yvonne belittle the students but also the parents. She tells them their kids have no discipline. I know some kids don't but she doesn't single those out. She degrades everyone.

My daughter attended for 1 month. She was in a class with 3 and 4 year olds. These children were berated and spoken to harshly. I saw girls crying in the halls everyday, was even told that children need to start sucking it up at 3 years old. And its try she does have a wooden spoon she threatens the younger children with. Very little seems to be done in instructing the younger children, they are expected to watch and copy and when they don't they are criticized. Would not recommend this place to anyone!

My daughter is one of Ms. Mitzi's students and she loves and adores her as her dance teacher. They welcomed my daughter with open arms when she first started attending classes. The care and compassion my daughter receives is unparalleled. My daughter praises Ms. Mitzi and looks up to her so much. She absolutely loves dancing now. She is now on one of the competition teams and loves it. I would not have my child attend anywhere else. They are dedicated to teaching dance and providing support and guidance when needed. Yvonne DeKay School of Dance is a great place for your child to learn all dance forms. I totally disagree with the comments that they are too hard on the kids. Sometimes you have to be stern with children/tween/teens if they are not behaving or not putting forth the effort necessary to learn the proper techniques. I could not praise Mrs. Yvonne and Ms. Mitzi enough. You should without a doubt send your child to Yvonne DeKay School of Dance.

OK.. as a former student that has experienced not only yvonnes but other studios i can say that this studio def. has its pros and cons. I feel that i walked away from the studio with a knowledge of the art. I knew not only the movement i was performing but the name of the movement where it came from and what it meant. I enjoyed learning the art and the importance of emotion but what i didnt enjoy was the screaming the fighting the backstabbing and the constant drama. A recital should be a great closing to a year, not an emotional train wreck of a mess where nobody knows what they are doing and nobody knows the routines. No matter how hard you work and no matter what you accomplish you will never receive the true glory you deserve at that studio because there is so much drama going on everybody lives to bring you right back down. Yes she has wonderful choreography and great ideas b/c she can think outside the normal but its not worth crying everyday you leave the studio because of the constant fighting. She needs to get control over her students and put some structure and morals back into the dance room.

My daughter attended two dance studios before we stumbled into Ms Yvonne's. I signed her up for summer classes, just to give it a try and to see if it would be any different than the disappointments we faced at other studios. Was I ever shocked. Ms. Yvonne and her staff all welcomed my daughter and myself with open arms. The staff really love the children and care about them with compassion and pure love. Yes, Ms. Yvonne tells you exactly what she thinks, but she is more than willing to listen to and work with you! My daughter is now on a competitive team and the love, guidance and support that she recieves from Ms. Mitzi, Ms, Yvonne's daughter, is beyond amazing. Mitzi expects the children to try their hardest, but absolutely does not belittle them! She praises them when they do well and guides them when they don't! Amazing place!

As someone who majored in Musical Theatre in college, I was required to take many college level dance classes. Without fail, my instructors would comment on the level of my technique. When they learned that my entire dance education was completed at a small studio in the Ohio River Vally, they were always shocked!

I am so glad to have gotten first rate instruction in this small area! Miss Yvonne is more than a teacher, she is a mentor to her students. Her devotion and enthusiasm to the art of dance turned my dancing from an "activity" to a passion. If you are looking for a studio in the tri-state that emphasizes good technique and hard work in a fun enviornment, Yvonne Dekay's Studio is unparalleled.

I would have to give Yvonne DeKay School of Dance a poor review. I feel that the level of unprofessionalism by Miss Yvonne and her daughter reach a level that borders abuse, not only to her students, but her staff as well. There have been instances that I have heard Miss Mitsy berate little children as well as the older girls and make them cry. I have passed students in the hall in tears trying to compose themselves enough to go back into class.
As for the young man who says that woman needs to let her child grow up, I would have to disagree. There is a line between discipline and verbal abuse. I have even overheard mothers talking about how afraid their children are of Yvonne b/c of her wooden spoon. I have overheard this woman speak to her staff, and she should be ashamed.
Parents, you need to think twice before you send your child to a dance studio that allows instructors to scream at your children - which does not TEACH a child anything except fear. My tween daughter attended for a year and finally asked to switch to a different studio because of the way Mitsy was treating the other girls in her class and she felt like she wasn't learning anything and was actually embarrassed by the way they performed on stage.

Miss Yvonne is the best dance teacher ever :) I am 23 and i have been with her since i was 7, and not only is she a wonderful teacher but shes like a mother. I know if i ever needed any life advice or just someone to talk to she would always be there for me. When you go to Miss Yvonne's you are going to meet a new family, everyone there is great, and you will meet people that will stay with you the rest of your life. Miss Yvonne and her daughter are wonderful people that know alot about the art of dance. But not only are they teaching you how to dance, they are also teaching you life skills :) And i dont think you could get this kind of care anywhere elce but at Yevonne DeKays School of Dance :)

To The Lady Who Is Scared To Let Her Child Grow Up

I feel that if kids are not disciplined enough they will grow up out of line and and will not be able to serve our country right in the future. Parents are not hard enough on their children and they are going to grow up and be spoiled little brats, and they will not be able to protect themselve and will just run back to their parents crying like they are now. If you cant take the heat of a dance teacher then how are they going to survive in the cold hearted world.

I feel that Yvonne's daughter Mitsy is too hard on the little ones from my experience. If it weren't for Miss Laura my child wouldn't be there. I also feel the studio lacks a professional feel.
The tumbling part is ok, yet over-crowded, so the children don't get the one-on-one that they need.

Yvonne DeKay's school has been an important cultural feature of the Ohio River Valley since its founding in the late 1960s. It's amazing how many champions have graduated from this little academy, and they have really helped to put their home towns on the map. As with any meaningful endeavor, students will find that they should sincerely open their minds to the teachings of the school. Anybody who has ever done anything in life knows that if you really expect to gain anything, you must devote yourself to a little bit of practice on your own. The same goes with dancing, tumbling, and related physical endeavors. It pays to take things seriously right from the start, and you?ll have tons more fun as you become good at it. The school is very affordable, especially when you consider the alternatives. The teachers are professional and superbly qualified, and they have occasional visiting teachers from New York and other major cities. The environment is focused yet fun.

Of course, the school provides technical skill in dance, but there is more: Students learn to move through life with a measure of physical grace and self-discipline that will help them in many ways.

I was one of the first students at the school when I was a child; I am pretty sure I was the only boy at the time. The skills I learned as an acrobat have helped me in competitive sports and, believe it or not, they have saved my life on more than one occasion. The tap dancing helped me impress the girls, too. If you live within fifty miles of this school, and you have kids, you really need to look into sending them to learn from Yvonne. She insists on good behavior from her students, too, and this is a godsend to any parent. Once you see your child or teen perform in the annual recital, you'll know you made the right decision. It is worth every penny and every hour you put into it. As thousands of parents can attest, your kids will thank you when they?ve grown.

PROS: Affordable, professional staff, students achieve great skill & good manners
CONS: Some parents lack a sense of responsibility, and their kids can disrupt.

I love Yvonne Dekay School Of Dance so much, it showed me how I can do anything I set my mind to. The teachers were so nice to me they were really dedicated. I had one teacher a couple years back that actually would stay late and help me after class even when she had tons of things to do. If you have a child I would defienitly reccommend this studio. It is so fun and it was worth every second of practice. In fact I am going back this year.I really hope you try this facility.

My daughter attended this school starting at age five until the age of 10. I found out very early, that this turned out to be a very expensive venture. Also, a lot of time has to be devoted to practice. The employees, at that time, were not as supportive as I thought they should have been.
