In response to Leanne W (Excuse me).... Everything I've read says the leptospirosis vaccine for dogs is risky. They were probably right to not recommend it unless your dog was at high risk.

"How Can I Prevent My Pets From Catching Leptospirosis?

Limiting your pet??s access to contaminated water is the best way to avoid leptospirosis. Feeding pets and wild critters outside your home attracts rodents and possible wildlife-carriers and should be avoided.

Vaccination:

Your other option is to have your pet vaccinated. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) considers leptospirosis vaccine a ??non-core? vaccine for dogs. That is, they do not recommend pets receive it unless there is a good chance they will be exposed to leptospirosis. The main reason for this is that veterinarians see more vaccination reactions following the administration of vaccines containing leptospirosis than any other vaccines. These reactions range from the minor inconveniences of pain at injection site, facial swelling and hives to a fatal anaphylactic reaction. Which pet will experience them cannot be predicted.

The immunity that leptospirosis vaccinations give is short lasting ?? perhaps a year, perhaps less in some dogs. Occasionally, the vaccine does not protect at all. Vaccine manufacturers have known the drawbacks of their leptospirosis vaccines for years.

However, in 2004, The Ft. Dodge division of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals came out with a multi-strain leptospirosis vaccine produced from leptospira sub-units (LeptoVax 4) . Researches have long suspected that the cellular debris and other extraneous material that found its way into leptospirosis vaccines might account for the frequency of vaccine reactions. The sub-unit technology allows only the leptospira proteins necessary for your pet??s immunity to be injected. Hopefully, this is a safer product than the old lepto vaccines. No vaccination is without risk.

So you and your veterinarian must decide if your pet??s risk of catching leptospirosis justifies yearly vaccination. In making that decision you must ask if your pet frequents areas that may harbor leptospirosis. You must also know if leptospirosis is occurring frequently in your community.

You must also consider if your pet, or its siblings, have had previous vaccination reactions. Reactions also seem to occur more frequently in smaller breeds than larger ones. "

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Martin. He caught something on my dog's bloodwork that my previous vet missed that, without treatment, would've killed him. Thank goodness I listened to my instincts and the red flags I was getting with that previous vet. Dr. Martin was highly recommended from a vet tech that doesn't even work with him, but knew him when he was a student. She takes her animals to him. I'm so glad I found this vet!
BTW, I read the bad review on here and I have to say...they must have posted it for this vet and clinic by mistake. I can almost guarantee it. They have never said a heartworm test is not required. As a matter of fact, they mentioned they don't use Heartgard anymore because Heartgard won't guarantee the product anymore. And when I want to skip the bi-yearly heartworm test, they really tell me it's important despite my dog being on preventative year-round. This vet really does care and gives the best care around!

I just got off the phone with the receptionist at Animal Medical Ctr and I was 100% impressed. We are bringing home our new puppy tomorrow and I had already made an apointment at another vet. When I made my original apointment I forgot to ask about the cost- this time, when they called with the reminder I remembered to ask and was blown away by the fee for puppy shots! I quickly started calling around and reached the Animal Medical Center. The receptionist who is NOT a vet informed me of all the shots my puppy would be getting and also informed me that as he is a Shetland Sheepdog they would not give him a Leptospirosis shot. This is dead on to what all Sheltie breeders have told me. Shetland Sheepdogs have adverse reactions to this shot, and in fact many of the more informed vets have stopped giving the Lepto shots because the side effects from the shot are worse then the illness. I know the review previous to mine slammed the vet for not wanting to give this vaccine but I think it shows that Dr. Martin and all his staff are up to date on the recent developments in vaccines. I am very excited for my visit on Monday and am just blown away by the knowledge the receptionsit had- if she was that good I can't imagine how amazing the vet is going to be- plus their fees are REASONABLE- especially when you consider you could give a shot to a dog for $5 yourself. I don't see the point in paying $100's for shots that cost $5.

my dog and i were new clients to the area and he needed to be updated on his shots. i called around and found them to be much cheaper than anyone else so i set up an appt. well i found out why they were so much cheaper, they told me that my dog's leptospirosis vaccine was unnecessary and so was his heartworm check! they said that it was rare for a dog to contract lepto and that there is no need for the vaccine! they also told me that because my dog was on heartworm prevention he didn't require a heartworm check! i told them that i did my best to make sure i was doing it correctly every month but wanted him checked. they once again told me it was unnecessary and wouldn't do it! i was outraged and found a new vet. they did not care about proper medicine or the full protection of my dog

I have a Chihuahua that I am getting spayed. I got the quote from my regular vet and about fell over. Usually their prices are great, but this was a shock. My dog means everything to me, but this was just WAY too much. I called around to see if I could get some other estimates. I just went through the phone book for my area and came upon this vet. They said that they could do it for much lower and as long as she was up to date on all her shots there would not be any need for a pre surgery visit. I was so impressed with their whole procedure. They knew that the only reason I was bringing my dog to them was because they were cheaper then my regular vet. They still treated my and my dog like we were regular patients. The final bill was wonderful. My dog is fixed, I am happy and I would recommend this vet to anyone!!!
