I agree I never found what I wanted there. Not to mention all the animal cages seamed to need to be cleaned most of the time.I glad there closed. At least there is now a new pet store in town (GMG's Critter Etc.) that can answer animal questions. Yes it may be small but it is clean and nice and they care for the animals they have.

I worked at love a pet for about 8 months. All of you saying that we never allowed the puppies to walk around, well how do you expect one person in charge of that whole puppy department to allow multiple dogs to roam around while also having people ask to see multiple dogs. While I was there, I played with as many of the animals as I could without getting into trouble. There are other responsibilities than just letting them play. With puppies, I know for a fact that we took care of them and kept sick ones in the back and paid special attention to them. Ferrets were kept in a larger cage while I was there and we couldn't put beds or anything in there, because with so many in one cage, they destroy it! I can agree with all of you who said Gary ( the owner ) is nothing but rude and cares mainly about the profit. I worked for minimum wage the whole time I was there without a raise.

At least they are closed and you all can quit throwing fits.

I keep reading about "reputable breeders". A reputable breeder does not sell to pet stores. Period. A reputable breeder does not sell their puppies along 71st street. A reputable breeder does not sell their puppies in the newspaper. Nor do they breed yorkiepoos, maltipoos, goldendoodles, pompoos, etc. You can find all the mixed breed, homeless, loving animals you need in rescue. ARF of Tulsa, the Humane Society of Tulsa, PAWS of Tulsa are all overrun with the results of the "reputable breeder". Education is the key. Read about puppy mills. If Love a Pet doesn't get their puppies from mills then they most surely get them from backyard breeders with no care for the health and well being of their animals. A puppy should never, ever be taken away from its mother or litter before the age of 8 weeks and the puppies at Love a Pet most obviously are... If you want an alternative, locally owned store that doesn't sell puppies, Southern Agriculture for "stuff" or Animal Health Supply for high quality foods.

I've lived in broken arrow for over 12 years and have never once had a good experience with love a pet! If you have a lot of animals and need a place of geographic convenience it's a quick stop for your pet needs, though supplies and brands are very limited while cost is ridiculously high. The worst part of it though is that none of the workers EVER seem to know the answers to ANY of my questions. Makes me wonder about the welfare and well-being of the animals at love a pet seeing as how the staff is so lacking in the knowledge of the animals they're handling. Not to mention rude reactions they give of my inconveniencing them into doing their jobs and help a customer!
Also, the dogs and cats they sell are from supposed breeders, and as a certifiably educated animal lover I know that far too many homeless pets are of pure breed. BUT since love a pet is a place of business and not a place for animal lovers they choose to profit from puppies that will undeniabley find a home anyway instead of the poor babies that are unnecessarily euthanized at the local animal shelters. Come on love a pet, even big corporations like petsmart and petco help with rescue adoptions for so many local organizations. AND the fee of a rescue pet in oklahoma includes spay/neuter, ALL shots, and now usually even an I.D. chip implant!
The worst of all of is the fact that love a pet doesn't test for disease in any of their pets before putting them on display (more than likely so it doesn't cost them anything), so what illnesses do you think will spread in a place that houses quite a few sick puppies and kitties? Too many, for example: Parvo, Coxidia (which can be spread easily to humans), Distemper, Kennel Cough, even parasites (fleas, ticks, earmites), and the list just goes on and on. So if you ask to handle a pup or kitten that you may or may not wish to purchase they have a good chance of being ill and they will let you (and possibly your children) handle this likely contagious and sad animal. I don't know how a place like this stays in business for so many years without being shut down by the health department or CDC!

I went to this store yesterday to buy a metal dog feeder. I recently had surgery so I am crutches and needed some help with my purchase. I stood by the check out station for a minute before the cashier noticed me. I asked her where the automatic feeders for dogs were and she pointed down an aisle. I said I would like to have the small feeder. The clerk, who was leaning on the counter, said no you can't. I was shocked, not many stores refuse to sell you their items. I asked why not and the clerk said I would have to talk to the owner. By this time I was already getting irritated by the clerk's complete lack of customer service skills so I turned to leave. The clerk said didn't I want to speak to the owner. I said no, if the feeder wasn't for sale - it wasn't for sale. At this point the clerk said oh, you wanted to buy it? I was so angry and even humiliated that she would think I was asking for a handout. If she didn't understand what I originally asked she should have said so, but instead of working on selling she made a smart remark.

I have already started telling people what horrible customer service I received from Love A Pet. Other people I have talked to have said that that they have had bad experiences there as well.

My recommendation is to NEVER step inside this store! From now on I will go back to Tulsa to the big chain stores.

I read all of the reviews here. You ppl need to read about animal before you purchase them. I believe that probably all who had a sick animal, or one that died, simply didn't know how to take care of your animal properly. Why do you think it is cruel to see these pups in their cages? What do you think rescue facilities and Humane Societies keeps their animals in? Is crate training much different? Also, vaccinations are not 100% and they never will be, so if you pup comes down with Parvo, keep that in mind. It really comes down to knowledge. Don't be stupid and do as much reading as you possibly can. You also need to understand that they get inspected on a regular basis and it also against the law to lie about an animal you are buying.

I have been in this store when I have needed something quickly for my babies. I have never gotten good service, the staff is uncaring and rude. I like to keep my business in Broken Arrow but will go to Tulsa to Petsmart from now on. I know of several pets that have been sold sick and the new owners were treated as if they were to blame. THIS IS THE STORE'S FAULT NOT THE NEW OWNERS, THE ANIMALS SHOULD NEVER BE SOLD SICK! It breaks my heart to see the suffering of the animals that are in there. I have 3 dogs and two cats all rescue animals, they are wonderful! If you are looking for a new family member please go to the Humane society or look on petfinder.com.

By the way they get there puppies from puppy mills. Puppy mills are usually dirty and unsanitary. If everyone would get there animals from reputable breeders or rescue places maybe we could put the puppy mills out of business.

Again Please do not shop at Love a pet!

I have purchase two pembroke welsh corgis from Love a Pet. One was a red and white and the other, a tri. Both of which are excellent dogs and very loving. It's unfortunate that other dogs were sold being so unhealthy. I handled both of my dogs before purchasing. Yes, it is true that the staff there is not very willing to assist. But in both my situations they fully went over the contract of purchase, the good and the bad. I also want to say that my dogs are continuously complimented on their beautiful color and markings and are AKC registered. The puppies are kept in small cages, I would not recommend buying an older dog just because you never know how long that dog has been there. I do know however, that Love a Pet has a VERY high turnover rate for the majority of their dogs. So, just be wary, but also know that not all of their dog purchases have been negative ones.

I live in Broken Arrow and I have one dog, one cat, and two guinea pigs all of which cause me at times to have to run out on a moments notice to pick up something for one of my "family members". I admit, I have been to this store several time and of course my daughter loves to go to see all the animals they have there. However, it breaks my heart and makes me sick to walk by the puppy section and to see these babies walking on wire and in cages so small that it is just plain wretched. These dogs never have blankets or toys in with them and I question how often, if at all, they are ever taken from their cages for walks ~ I have never seen it happen. Several of the puppies develp that "nervous bark" which is what I call the whining, yipping and the frantic walking from one end of the cage to the other and back. This is a sign of distress in dogs and an unnatural behavior.

I have explained this to my daughter that Lov A Pet simply does not care for their animals and that many are often sold sick ~ as is well known.

I once sucumbed to buying one of my guinea pigs from there b/c I actually just felt sorry for her and thought I would "rescue" her. I was one of the fortunate ones because "Katy" never became sick or died. She lives carefree and is pampered along with all my other animals.

The staff at the store actually just disgust me. They don't seem to care what-so-ever about the conditions these animals are in or how they are kept (housing) until they are sold. I have never seen an employee playing with, caressing, or caring for any of the animals. The conditions of the small animal cages when I have been there were disgusting.

What I would like to see is a way to shut down these types of enterprises. To profit from the sale of a defenseless animal that has been mistreated is criminal.

PLEASE DO NOT PATRON THIS STORE!

i bought a corn snake and did everything i was supposed to do to take care of it and it would not eat. i asked love a pet if i was doing anything wrong and they said i wasnt. so i continued trying to feed the snake and after having it for a month and a half it died. i talked to the owner about it and recieved no refund or even another snake they just told me it was my loss... i would not buy any pet there

I recently purchased a Mini Rex rabbit for my son. We had her for less than a month and she became very ill. Within hours of her becoming ill, we were meeting our vet for an emergency call that cost us $148 and we still lost our baby. Afterwards I did some research into what could have been the cause of this terrible ordeal. I believe that Love A Pet is taking these babies away from their mothers at too young of an age and selling them to people who have no idea what kind of situation they are getting themselves into. This baby was three weeks old, according to what I was told by a store employee, when they received her, and that is way too young to be taken away from her mother. They have not yet developed the immunities that they need for survival on their own. It makes me so angry every time I think about losing her the way we did. I thought that we were doing everything that we should to make sure she was happy and healthy and in all actuality, she never had a chance. It was just a matter of time before she became ill and once this happens there is very little chance that the baby will survive. Out entire family was devastated when we lost her less than 30 days later, we had all become very attached to her. Love A Pet owes it to their customers to inform them of these risks involved when purchasing a rabbit that is too young. Yes, they are smaller and more cute than a older rabbit, but when the out come is such as ours, is it really worth it?

ATTN: Please be CAREFUL!!! LOVEAPET is selling SICK PUPPIES!!! I have solid proof from my veterinarian, that I purchased a sick chihuahua from LOVEAPET!!! (And from the looks of things, I'm not the only one!) She had EXTREMELY runny stool when I brought her home. That evening I called LOVEAPET, they told me I had 48 hours to take her to my veterinarian to have her checked out. Then if she was diagnosed with any problems, I would have to take her to LOVEAPET'S vet clinic to be treated, (Which really makes no sense, because the puppies are supposed to be vet checked prior to sale by LOVEAPET, or so they say.) I took her to the vet and they did an examination, including a basic fecal. (This was on monday, she was purchased on Sunday.) I was told by LOVEAPET that she did not have diarrhea, and had previously been treated for worms and any intestinal parasites prior to being put on display in the store. I relayed this information to the veterinarian and was told that it could be a change of diet and/or stress. (Change of diet was because they did not have any of the food that they were feeding her in stock! So I purchased the substitute food that they had recommended.) She continued to have diarrhea, so I took her back to the vet on Thursday. He then did further fecal examinations, only to find that she had GIARDIA! (THIS IS AN INTESTINAL PARASITE THAT IS TRANSMITTED THROUGH FECAL MATTER, YOUR PETS AS WELL AS HUMANS CAN CONTRACT THIS PARASITE AND BECOME VERY SICK!) I then called LOVEAPET and spoke with the owner. (Gary) This man told me that he would never sell a sick puppy and that if the puppy had diarrhea, she never would have been sold. He then proceeded to tell me that it was my fault that she was sick. (AS IF SHE SPONTANEOUSLY CAUGHT GIARDIA UPON LEAVING LOVEAPET!!!) This man is UNCARING and VERY UNPROFESSIONAL!!! After this conversation, my sister and I returned to LOVEAPET, only to find that many of the animals had runny stools in their cages!!! THIS MAKES ME SICK and it's OBVIOUS that the owner (Gary) focuses more on his profit than the health, quality, and happiness of the pets in his store. I THINK THE DOLLAR SHOULD NEVER OUT WAY THE HEALTH OF ANY LIVING THING AND THIS IS TOO OFTEN TAKEN FOR GRANTED!!! PLEASE THINK TWICE BEFORE PURCHASING PETS FROM LOVEAPET! I PRAY THAT THESE ANIMALS ARE RESCUED FROM THIS HELL HOLE AND GIVEN OPPORTUNITIES TO LIVE HAPPY, HEALTHY LIVES WITH ALL THE LOVE AND COMPASSION THAT THEY DESERVE!!!

I will NEVER give Love A Pet any business, and I recommend that if you're looking to puchase a pet, you consider going to the Humane Society where they let you adopt HEALTHY pets. My puppy got very ill and started showing signs of PARVO within 8 days of being purchased from this store. And supposedly the puppy was "up-to-date" on on all his vaccinations. HE WAS NOT!

My puppy is still in the pet hospital and has been on IV's and anitbiotics for 4 days now.

The employee/owner of Love A Pet is extremely uncaring and unprofessional. He absolutely put all the blame on me, the customer!! The owner stated that Parvo was a virus, and that it was NOT HIS RESPONSIBITLITY! Well, then my question is...if it's a virus, why is there a vaccine for it???? I've since been told this is a common response for the owner, and that he purchases from puppy mills. This is NOT something you want to have to watch your pet go through! Parvo is deadly! And very contagious.

After reading about other people not satisfied with Love A Pet I have to say it's sad that I'm not alone. I have purchased four kittens from Love A Pet in Broken Arrow and I will NEVER give that store my business again. Two of these kittens have had to be put to sleep for diseases and now the other two are sick and we're not for sure if they are going to make it. Why are you selling sick animals? THIS IS NOT RIGHT!!! I am reporting your company with a copy of all the complaints to the better business bureau and to the animals rights organization!!! It's clear to me that Love A Pet does not need to be in business selling animals!!!

My husband & I recently visited Love A Pet in Broken Arrow and did not find the store friendly. The store employees were talking amonst themselves and paying no attention to customers. We are in the market to purchase a new puppy but will never visit Love A Pet again.

I went to Love A Pet today because the veterinary clinic for which I work often sees animals from the store. I should have suspected something about the way the store is managed from the state of the pets we see adopted there. My main complaint today is the rude and unfriendly attitude of the staff. I walked around the store, browsing, for about half an hour. During that time, I passed several employees, none of whom asked if I needed help or even looked or smiled at me. Then at the checkout, the young woman "helping" me acted as if it were a huge inconvenience. She did not greet me or bid me farewell, only spoke when she had to, and was very unpleasant when she did. In short, I will never go back there and will not recommend it to my veterinary clients.

Frankly, I am disgusted with Love A Pet and the way they "care" for their animals. I work at a Veterinary Hospital and have seen at least 5 puppies come from there with various diseases.
I've seen at least two with Parvovirus and one with Distemper. Others have ear infections and parasites. I would never buy a puppy from a pet store, much less one that keeps them in the tiny cages they're in.

When I first moved here, I was looking for a place to buy food for my four ferrets, and checked out Love A Pet as I was on my way home from work. I requested to see a puppy, not knowing the condition of the dogs at the time. They firmly (and quite rudely) told me that I could not see any of them unless I was planning on buying one. What if I wanted to look him/her over? What if I was thinking of a certain breed and wanted to see if they were compatible with me and my home? They did not even recommend that I read up on the Corgi I was considering...and they could (or would) not provide me with breeder information so that I could look them up for myself and see exactly how the puppies are raised/the parents' genetic history. That's assuming they're from a respectable breeder and not - as I suspect - from a puppy mill or someone breeding dogs that don't fit the breed standard just to get money from it.
I was also disgusted with the way their small animals, reptiles, and birds are kept. The ferrets are kept in tiny tanks with no room to move around or get any exercise, and they have no hammocks or beds. As an owner of ferrets for years, I can tell just by looking through the glass that these listless creatures get no stimulation. They're in glass tanks underneath hot lights...and ferrets are so easily overheated. At only 80 degrees, they can die of heatstroke, so I can't imagine those hot lamps are doing any good for the poor things.
Their rats, rabbits, etc. are all kept in similarly terrible conditions: cramped into cages with barely enough room to turn around and with no stimulation, toys, beds...anything.
The budgies are kept in a large, open-topped bin where anyone can stick their hand in and stress the birds. All that's stopping them from reaching in is a sign asking people to please not handle the birds without an employee's help.

I would definitely not recommend this store. If you want a puppy, read up on the breeds first...or go to a shelter. The Humane Society of Tulsa has plenty of homeless animals - often purebred or "designer" mixes - for adoption for as little as 75 or 150 dollars...and they guarantee them healthy. Just last week, they had a purebred Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and he found a home for 150 dollars...fully vaccinated and neutered and healthy and with a free vet visit...whereas Love A Pet would charge you 400 for a puppy that you have no way of knowing is healthy or tempermentally sound. There are many animals (purebred and mixed breeds alike) available through rescue organizations that need homes. They've been vaccinated, altered, and microchipped...and they need homes and love just as much as the toy breeds in the pet stores.

Please, do the right thing for the dog...don't support this terrible store and the people that produce all of its animals. Adopt or purchase from a responsible breeder, and do your homework beforehand.

I work at a local veterinary clinic that has seen several patients purchased from Love-A-Pet. This store doesn't hesitate to sell unhealthy animals. The kittens they sell are given to them. They don't test for any of the major feline diseases, such as Leukemia or FIV, which can be easily spread to other cats. They "look them over" (as they told me when I called and asked) and give them there vaccines (one set). The kitten I saw today from LoveAPet had a terrible ear mite infestation and a very serious respiratory infection that could easily turn fatal. The puppies at LoveAPet are from careless breeders at best, but most likely puppy mills. They live in cages and are forced to walk on wires. The breeds sold at this store can have many serious health problems which can be avoided by getting your puppy from a responsible breeder. LoveAPet relies on shoppers' impulses with no concern for the pets' futures'. Please don't support this unethical store.

Me and my kids love this place. I buy most if not all of my pet needs here. They have the biggest selection of animals. And the people there are wonderful. I took my dog to two different vets that could not find out what was wrong with her skin but after talking to a luv a pet employ they were able to tell me what was wrong with her and sale me a treatment that cleared up her skin problem . They have everything here that you would find at a chain pet store.

I'm definately an animal lover, so in all honesty, I just like browsing. If you're shopping for supplies, food, cages, etc., then you're in the right place. Same thing if you're buying fish, lizards, or small animals. But for cats and dogs, you're definately going to pay more here. I recommend looking in the local paper if that's what you want - this place charges an arm and a leg.

Love A Pet is one of the few stores in Tulsa that still sells live animals (besides fish).

At any given time, they probably have ~20 puppies and 5-6 kittens of all different breeds. And they're surprisingly healthy, for having been kept in a pet store.

The puppies/kittens are usually a little older than you'd get from an independent breeder... they won't take them until they've been eating solid food for at least 3-4 weeks. But if you have your heart set on a particular breed, they can find one for you, if they don't have a puppy in stock.

They take good care of the animals, which is important to me. They're handled by the employees daily, so they're used to human contact.

And of course, they also sell all sorts of pet supplies. But they're not quite as cheap as Petsmart.
