I had passed by this restaurant several times and was curious to try it. My husband and I went on a Saturday night after 9 pm. The place was nearly empty. The staff was very courteous, but that's about all I can say for Alessandro's. We had to settle for the house wine (which was very expensive!) because they were out of our first and second choices. On top of that, my husband had to settle for his second choice of entree because they were out of his first choice. Then, the food came. My portion was very small. I'm a small person, so I wasn't hoping for a portion suitable for a lumberjack, but this was a very skimpy portion--about half of what you would expect to see on your plate. We decided to order dessert, mainly because I was still hungry! We ordered the tiramisu to share, and it was very large and quite delicious. At least it ended well. Alessandro's, why such small entrees? We paid full price for them!

I have looked forward to having lunch at this resturant. It looks so charming from the outside. I went in on a Friday afternoon. They had run out of San Pelligrino. I ordered the spinach salad with scallops. It is so ugly. They marinate the scallops so that they are a deep purple color. Very tough. Everything in this salad was so salty, no balance. No flavor. I couldn't even eat the spinach. The egg was ok, the olives hadn't been drained so ....more salt. The tomatoes were not ripe and were flavorless. The chef either does not taste the food or is a smoker. I found it disgusting and I will not be back. What guts to ask $12.00 for this dish. Also, they do not validate if you park in the garage they are under.

I went to Alessandro's on Jan 23, 2009 for happy hour. I've been there dozens of times in the past 9 years for lunch, dinner, and happy hour, but was sadly disappointed on this visit. We walked into the bar, and though only 3 tables had customers, all the spots at the bar and the other tables had dirty dishes and glasses. We sat at the bar anyway. It took a bit of time to get served but it wasn't busy at all.

I ordered the "house red." (It ended up being $7.75 - for the house red?) The bartender said she was out of a number of wines, so I choose a chianti. The wine glass was filthy looking - lipstick stains all around the glass. The glass may have been sterile because presumably it'd been washed in hot water but it was still very unappetizing. When the bartender came back from the kitchen, I asked for a new glass. The second glass also had weird stuff around the rim, which she noticed. She explained that the glasses were being hand washed and it was probably water stains. She finally had to go to the kitchen to get a clean glass.

We ordered the linguine with pesto. We got it and it was lukewarm, at best. (Again, very few customers so I don't know why it sat on the counter getting cold.) The flavor was fine, but we counted 3 pinenuts between the two plates.

The place has deteriorated since I was last there a year or so ago; I won't go back. There are too many good places to eat in Portland. I'll miss the cute Italian waiter, though.

Pros: cheap happy hour food

Cons: slow service, lipstick rimmed glasses, unbussed tables on a slow night, low inventory of wine

We dined here for a very nice evening out. We had a good dinner and good service. It was a very nice setting and we would definitely eat there again.

I learned how to cook true Italian cuisine, from the simple ingredients in the traditional dishes here.I love the waiter who has kept the food as is has always been, authentic, through each change in restaurant ownership. Sadly I think the current owners are sleazy and insincere, but my loyalty lies with the head waiter who should own the restaurant, he is the one who brings the customers, the authenticity and last ounce of atmosphere the old place has left to squeeze out.

My wife and I stayed in downtown Portland a few weeks back and decided to eat at Allessandros. We had eaten there about 10 years ago and remembered it as a good place. Dinner was a huge disappointment. The wait staff was good, which is why I gave it the 2 stars, the problem is the kitchen.

We ordered an antipasto salad, and salad with tomato, basil and fresh mozzarella. First they brought out the salad, and the basil was old and wilting. We thought it still tasted okay, and we didn't say anything. Then they brought out the antipasto salad. The cheese was square cheese (like Kraft cheese) that was cut into a triangle, and they brought a slice of square ham folded in half instead of prosciutto. I asked about the prosciutto and they said they ran out, so she brought me some cold (but cooked) stuff that she said was prosciutto, but it looked like panchetta. It was so mediocre that we should have canceled orders and left before the main course arrived. The main course was average and uneventful.

With so many great Italian restaurants in Portland like Tuscany Grill, Cafe Mingo, etc, there is no reason to consider Allessandros. It's kind of sad because I think this place was good at one time. Time for a new chef and a remodel.

Our weekend dining experience was not a total loss. The next morning we had breakfast at Kenny & Zuke's Delicatessen which was awesome! (see my review of Kenny and Zukes on citysearch).

I wrote one of the positive reviews below. When I first started going to Alessandro's in 2006, the portions were huge, the food was excellent, and I kept coming back for more. I would eat there once or more weekly, and I truly felt at home. Then, the portion size started decreasing, and the prices were raised. I complained about it, and they said that times were rough. This was back in 2007. Then they cut the free cup of soup, and started charging you that. Then they started charging you for a side of cheese. Pretty soon, the food quality started going downhill. What was once delicious food was becoming on-again off-again service. I was very forgiving, and still came back. I had to order 1.5 portions just to get the same amount of food as before. They claimed nothing had changed, in terms of the portion size, but when I invited my out-of-town Dad in two different years, he was shocked at the difference in the amount of food. The second-to-last time I ate at Alessandro's was on October 23rd, when they ran out of the dish I liked. I thought I'd give it one more try, so I came back for my birthday - and I told them it was my celebration. My birthday was 01/26/09, and I ate there with a friend. The dish I ordered tasted so badly, that I had to send it back. I tried to confirm that they would indeed give me back 1.5 portions, so I could have a nice, filling birthday meal. And the lady snapped back "I will only give you back what you left on your plate!" What shocked me is that I hadn't eaten very much, and that they were so rude to me on my birthday. What shocks me even more is that they didn't offer me complementary dessert, which they did do two years ago when I went there. I tried to go back again last Monday, but they look to have gone out of business. As a loyal customer for years, it was truly sad to see the decline in the restaurant. Wish they would have always remained the way they used to be.

Pros: When the food's good, it's really good

Cons: Small Portions, The Cost is Steep

I've had a wonderful experience, every time I went to Alessandro's. The staff is very warm, welcoming, and even try to teach you a little Italian while there.

The food was great and I'd definitely recommend it for intimate dinners :)

The food quality was so poor we couldn't eat it; the place does not look clean; the service was slow; we couldn't get out of there fast enough.

I would like to rate no stars but 1 appears to be the minimum. This place was terrible. I think the people who gave it more than 2 stars must work there because the food was awful, it tasted like re-microwaved garbage. We went for an anniversary and should have been warned off when there was more wait staff than customers. The decor screams 80's nightmare and the food screams awful. This place would be a great candidate for Kitchen Nightmares.

My Fiance and I went to Alessandro's for a Valentines Day dinner and it was thoroughly enjoyable. When you walk in the door you are greeted and your coats are hung. The service was prompt, thorough and polite. The food and wine were exceptional. I would recommend Alessandro's for anyone who enjoys Italian food, and especially those who want a warm environment. Overall delicious.

Reservations were made for 6pm. Food and apitizers were ordered at 6:13pm. Did not recieve apitizers until aprox. 7:00pm. Did not recv. food until well after 8pm. The food was just OK not great and presentation was poor. It was almost dropped when delivered to table. The server seemed to complain about her tip of $30.00 dollors on a $230.00 bill. The tip I should've left was to be more prompt with the service and food!!! If the problem was with the kitchen then maybe she should not share her tip with the cooks. I used to be a real fan of the restraunt that is why I wanted to eat there for my birthday now I do not know if I will return...

I had a fantastic meal! Try the Halibut piccata it was very fresh and cooked perfectly. I've eaten here a few times and have never been disappointed. There are many wonderful dishes offered here. The service was excellent too. Ask to be seated at Elio's table. He is one of the best and I've eaten all of over the world. I strongly recommend this restaurant especially during the week for a romantic or just a relaxed evening.

Three of us ate dinner at Alessandro's on 8/30/07 and despite other reviews you might read here, the food is just fine. I've eaten in quite a few Italian restaurants and I find Alessandro's to be on par with Bugatti's and Macaroni Grill. My only complaint is that it took awhile to get the check (we were on schedule--dinner, then a movie).

I'd return here for another meal.

Hmmmm buyer beware: went here for Sunday happy hour with low expectations and they were certainly lowered. I eat out a ton as I travel for business - this was one of the worst. I got Linguine al Pesto, more like Linguine no Taste-o. No garlic, low salt, slimely linguine. My gf got clams in basically water and canned tomatoes. It's a shame cuz the inside looked cool and the music was good. Service was fine. Try Mama Mia instead if you're craving good value Happy hour on sunday. Or eat some Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee.

I had a bad feeling about this place just by looking at the menu. None of the items even looked remotely interesting. After spending 10 minutes reading and re-reading the menu, not having an idea of what boring sounding dish to order, I finally ordered some garlic bread and a sausage pasta dish. Seriously, the garlic bread didn't have any garlic on it. It was butter, basil and parmesan cheese on two slices of toasted French bread. As for the sausage and pasta, it was really bland. I was bored after 5 of 6 bites and only ate half the meal. My date's seafood alfedo pasta was a little bit better than what I ordered but I couldn've made these meals better at home easily for a 1/3 of the cost. By the end of the meal I was angry that I choose to eat there.

The service was OK. I wasn't even asked if I would like anything to drink besides water, which I did. From there on they were slow to refill the water.

Definitely go somewhere else if you want Italian.

Pros: Pretty good selection of wine I guess.

Cons: They serve veal... gross.

.

If you like your food bland, this is your place. Both the cioppino and veal we had tonight were pretty much without taste. The clam appetizer came with roughly 10 small clams and also had very little taste.
We skipped desert after this, as I didn't expect it to be even mediocre.
Service was okay, but nothing special.
The decor has to go - quickly - there is a statue on one wall that looks like a blow-up doll.
Portland has lots of good restaurants - every singe one of them is better than Alessandro's.

My wife and I had the recent experience of being told that they would not honor a gift certificate that was purchased for my wife for her birthday last year and was about to expire. They said that they would not even extend it an extra day!

We have eaten there 3 times in the last year and have either forgotten the gift certicficate, or the bill exeded the value so much that we paid another way. We have previously considered it one of the better restaurants in town. We will not be returning, nor will my father-in-law who purchased the GC. He has always eaten there when he comes to town (3-4 times per year). There are several restaurants wtihin walking distance that offer much better customer service and understand retaining long term customers. We estimate that our family spent between $900-1200 last year and will recieve no more.

This decision not to extend the expiration date was decided by both the owner and manager of the establishment. I am very surprised by this, I have worked for many years here in Portland in the restaurant business and all of the ones that I have had the pleasure to work for would have handled it a different way.

When I stated that I would not be returning, the manager said "we sold 2 1/2 million dollars last year".This was said as if to say that they do not need our business. I know that they do not need our business, I am only sorry that I contributed to it in the past.

Sincerely,

This is one of my favorite restaurants. I love their steak and fish entrees. Pasta is pretty good too. I've never had a bad experience there. Prices are very reasonable, and entrees come with a choice of soup or salad. The side dish ravioli are delicious.

My boyfriend and I spent out first valentines day here at Alessandro's. It was an amazing experience and lovely dinner. From the moment you enter through the door, you almost transcend into a small Italian corner bistro. They offered traditional, yet delicious Valentines day 4 course dinner. Champagne and yummy chocolate covered strawberries topped off a seductive evening. The staff was timely and curtious, yet they respected our privacy on the particular evening. The restaurant manager came by, ensuring our dinner was up to our expectations. I highly recommend Alessandro's for Valentines day or any day.

This was once a fine restaurant, but on a recent visit, I was sad to discover it has gone completely downhill. The food was awful: salad drenched in bad dressing, pasta was mediocre (although portions were huge), and one entree we had to send back because the meat had spoiled! Deserts were just so-so as well. The prices are way too high for this low quality food. Service was pleasant but slow.

I went here for my birthday this year, and it was a very good experience. The atmosphere is very romantic, and the music is enjoyable also. The waiters/waitresses are very nice. I think the menu is pretty impressive too. Their wine and beer selection is very good. The bartenders recommended us great drinks and mixed them up very well. The bill is reasonable too.

A GROUP OF 15 OF US WENT TO ALESSANDRO'S AND WE AGREE IT WAS DISAPOINTING. AFTER TRYING OUR FISHY TASTLESS CALAMARI I QUICKLY CHANGED MY DINNER SELECTION TO TORTELINI, THINKING THAT MAYBE NOONE COULD RUIN THAT. THE CUP OF WATERY SOUP WAS ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD. I'M NOT SURE WHY THEY CALLED THE CAESAR SALAD CAESAR BECAUSE IT WAS SO BAD I COULDN'T EAT IT. THE DRESSING DIDN'T EVEN RESEMBLE A CAESAR DRESSING. MY HUSBANDS FETTUCINI ALFREDO WAS BLAND. ON MY FIRST SELECTION THEY WOULDN'T EVEN PUT ALFREDO SAUCE ON INSTEAD OF RED SAUCE-HOW HARD COULD THAT HAVE BEEN. THE ANTIPASO PLATTER WAS INDEED SKIMPY. LETS JUST SAY I DIDN'T EVEN TRY DESSERT. TWO OUT OF 15 ORDERED DESSERT AND IT LOOKED LIKE A CHILD DECORATED IT. OVERALL THIS RESTAURANT WAS COMICAL ESPECIALLY WITH THEIR DUSTY PLASTIC FLOWER CENTERPIECE. THE ENTIRE RESTAURANT NEEDS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER TO BRING THEM OUT OF THE 80'S. I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY HAVE STAYED OPEN AS LONG AS THEY HAVE. WE WERE THE ONLY ONES IN THE RESTAURANT UNTIL 8:00 ON A SATURDAY NIGHT. THIS WAS THE SECOND WORST RESTAURANT I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. I'M NOT SURE WHAT ALL OF THE OTHER RAVES WERE ABOUT, PERHAPS FRIENDS OF THE OWNER.

Pros: MAKES YOU APPRECIATE THE GOOD PLACES

Cons: EVERYTHING

Our new favorite place to go!! Its a bit of a drive considering I live in washougal(near camas) Washington, but well worth it. Beautiful atmosphere great service everytime we come and always amazing food. Reasonably priced and in a great location. My boyfriend loves it just as much as I do. We are going there for our anniversary :]

After reading all of these wonderfull reviews, my husband, my two sons and I decieded to give Alessandro's a try. We are all Italian food fans. We should have been forwarned when we walked in for our 7:15 reservations on a Friday night and there were only 4 or 5 other tables of diners. We Ordered the Antipasti platter to start and some chianti. There were actually four thin zuchhini slices and four tomatos topped with you guessed it four olives, just 2 pepperoncini's and a small portion of procuitto and cheese. The mushrooms in the middle were pretty good. Our salads were gross, wilty lettuce with too much dressing.(bitter-yuck) As for our meals. I myself ordered the saltimboca (chicken) the procuitto was fried and put on top of a dry breast of chicken. (salty and tastless) My husband and my son got the tortellini. It was average, but filled with a pasty meat, that made both of them ill. My younger son ordered the Wild Salmon, which is his favorite. Needless to say he ate about 1/2 of it. Overall just a miserable experience. The service was however quite good.

Portland Owned Buisness! The menu had the expected food, (Spaghetti & Meatballs, Fett. Alfredo, ect.,) but also items that you just don't find outside of Italy (or sometimes the East Coast)! Our server was genuine, very knowledgable, and we weren't made to wait for anything. Okay, so the bad part? It's right under a giant Smart Park, and they don't validate. but hey, what's $2 when the elevator takes you to the front door without a walk in the rain? There's also the chairs. Not great. But, so what? Everything about our meal was brilliant, we'll be back soon!
P.S. Sixteen or so options for dessert, but I may never be able to resist their Tiramisu!

Alessandros is FABULOUS! Have eaten here several times and always had a great meal. The Penne Gorgonzola and the Linguine con Gamberi are especially delicious! Also, it's right on the MAX line so it's easy to get to and no parking hassles. It's my favorite for business lunches, and for special dinners. Highly recommended.

Wow! We went to this place last Saturday, our only regret is that we didn't come sooner! We had the veal marsala (Scallopine al Marsala), chicken saltimbocca, calamari for a starter and a decent bottle of wine. Service was excellent, and we will definitely be back!

Add this to the top of the list of very good Portland Italian spots. What sets Alessandro's apart is their East Coast feel, but without the red and white checkered tablecloths and family style servings. The Veal Piccata was excellent, especially with extra capers. The tortellini side wasn't just a throw-in, as it was a wonderful mini-dish in itself. The Caesar salad was just okay. Even the olive oil thats served with your warm crusty bread was better than average. For a delicious light meal, try try the Pollo Tonato: cold chicken in a tuna and caper sauce. The Tutello was good, but the chocolate sauce hinted of Hersheys variety. For dessert, your best bet is the Cherries Amarene. Happy Hour menu is average. The middle-aged waiter with the Italian accent is to be commended on great service, and so are bus boys/girls.

I went to the restaurant with my wife for dinner. Eventhough it was a weekday, the place was quite packed. I soon found out why. We tried the $25 for 25. Unlike some of the previous places, they do not cheat you on the quantity of the food nor the quality. The food was great especially the tortellini. The tiramisu was awesome (you can actually taste the liquor). The service was good as well. I would say that this is the best italian restaurant that I have been so far in the greater Portland area. I will definately go there again.

Excellent service. Most notably my group could not get our water glasses more than half empty. The waiters were constantly at our disposal. Our every need was anticipated. Food was excellent, personally recommend the Amarene dessert, words can not describe.

I have been eating at Allessandro's for over ten years. The food is consistently outstanding, and the service is excellent. Try their veal piccata as a main dish, and share the gorgonzola pasta with prociutto as an appetizer.

I love Alessandro's. I can't truthfully speak to the overall menu, since I stick with the two dishes I love -- the Halibut Piccata and the Filetti Rossini. The Tortellini is AMAZING. You can get it as the side pasta with your entree, or on its own as a meal.
Their cheesecakes are also excellent, though they tend to run out early.
