I don't know how to explain this combination of noodles, partially cooked meat, raw bean sprouts and herbs. BUT! when you mix it all in the bowl, and wait maybe a minute to kinda " cook it up " this flavorful bowl of goodness is both

We have been enjoying Pho Van's food since they were down the street and without such a wide selection on their menu. They have remained true to the quality provided. We always enjoy the food.

We are die hard Vietnamese food lovers and this is one of our favorites! My wife always orders the beef noodle pho and I opt for their noodle bowls. The atmosphere is awesome and a romantic date spot. Their food has been the example which we have compared all others to. While it is a great dining experience, you can get comparable tasting food for less money at pho hung just down the street. The difference is the ambiance!

Pros: Taste

Cons: A bit pricey for their portions

The ambiance is typical american pan asian - black gloss carved wooden structures and fishes. The food while cheap is average, not bad just unremarkable. Service was polite and average. If i lived in the area I would go back for take-out when I couldn't think of anything better.

Super good pho. Great service and I think well priced. A huge bowl of pho for $7 is a great deal if you ask me. My husband and I both ate till we were full and spent less than $25. I will definitely go back.

the only thing about this place is the service, ambiance and three color drink, everything else is overpriced and below par. my sister and i ordered a pho and some other dishes like salad and rice. starting with the pho, it was raw, which is expected, but the soup was cold! how can you possibly enjoy a good bowl of cold pho?
the rice dish was good, but the meat was on the chewier side with LOTS of char marks all over. it was "blackened" above and beyond the norm for our tastes.
the best thing was the three color dessert, but even that was super sweet. at nearly 4 dollars a cup, you are definitely not getting your money's worth.

Food is very good!! I don't care much for "some" of the waitresses. I can think of maybe 2 waitresses that are very nice and on top of there jobs!! The other girls!! Forget about it!!! I'm lucky if I get a refill!! Or just to be checked on!! I feel like I am always flagging someone for more water or a refill on soda!!! My family has been going to pho van since they were off of Glisan on 82nd!! I have seen the positive and negative changes that the restaurant has endured!! I think that the restaurant is very clean and I like that they serve wine!! Not to many pho restaurants serve alcohol!!

I was incredibly offended by one waitress about 2 years ago. I was about 8 months pregnat and I was a little selfconcious due to my pregnancy. As our waitress was about to seat us she took a few steps and then stopped and turned around, looking me up and down and asked very puzzled "can you fit in a booth"??? I looked at her turning 10 shades of red "Yes'!!!! Then she had the nerve to say "well I didn't know"!! I just think she could have asked if I prefer a booth or table!! Or if she didn't think I could fit in a booth sit me at a damn table!!

Why do I go back?? Food is very good!! Try the creme' brulee!! It is wonderful!! It is clean!! and It is worth the bad service!! Sorry to say!!!

Pho Van is wonderful. Great Thai food, great atmosphere, good service, delicious! Try the sausage wrap (#31), and don't be scared of the great desserts (even the bean one). If you like avocados, try the avocado shake. It is not an overly avocado taste, it has mint and condensed milk in it and is a surprisingly delicious treat!
I've been here many times (both on date nights and even with my 8 month old son). Each time, the staff has been friendly and helpful, and the food is always great! I've never been dissappointed!

The service was extremly poor and seemed like only catered to the white people. I'm not a racial person but they were giving all the white people there better service. I was blown aways since i'm asian myself and I would never treat any customers differently. I would never go back there. I felt very alienated there. Would never recommended this place to any friends or family. There are so many other Pho places in portland that is cheaper and the food at "Pho Van" was not tasty. Very over priced and over rated.

Let me Defend Pho Van against all the negativity by the "ethnic pho eaters". I keep hearing complaints about about the prices. Essentially it comes down to paying 1$ more for the price compared to other Pho Places in town. However, keep in mind the $1 difference one is paying for, in return you are getting a nice, clean atmosphere, adequate service, and consistent food without the "THUMB SPECIAL" (Food servers bring your pho bowl out with a thumb or two in your bowl, Pho Oregon is notorious for this). The other sour point from many reviewers is the poor service. I find the service adequate. Personally Vietnamese and Chinese restaurant's have a bad to adequate service in general, so any service is usually a plus.

Personal Favorites:
Best BUN MANG VIT in town (Duck with Bamboo Shoots)
Best Egg Rolls in town

Highly recommend the sugarcane shrimp hand rolls, and green papaya salad. I have always been satisfied and come home with lots of leftovers. On weekends I recommend early dinner (5-6 pm start) for best service and quick food.

I just read the last review before me for this restaurant and I find it quite baffling. We can't possibly both be talking about Pho Van. I think this customer must be angry and dillusional. At any rate, I just wanted to say what a wonderful restaurant it is. Always good service, and fast. Also, the main courses are under $10 a piece. I feel like I am getting excellent food when I am there but am not paying an arm and a leg. The decor of the restaurant is also quite nice.

Extremely distasteful service each and everytime I'm there. Servers are rude with extremely poor customer service. Unfortunately, what keeps drawing me back once in a great while when I can tolerate the prices and service are the excellent rice plates. Caucasion's are preferred there no doubt. Next time you're there, look around you and you'll notice native pho eater's are scarce. Prices are way too high. However, I will admit food is delicious and like no other. BUT, you can get tastier pho for a cheaper price without discrimination many other places in Portland. I recommend Pho Vietnam or Pho Hung. It's better to order to go should you need that rice plate from Pho Van.

First off, great customer service. The waiter was prompt and polite and the food was good too. We had the Bun ga (honey lemon grass chicken) and Mi Văn (pork and shrimp noodle soup) with lotus tea and a mango black iced tea. All of it was great and it was in large portions, leaving plenty of left overs. The soup alone is enough to feed two people. I am defiantly coming here again and again. The waiter was so good at his job, I hardly knew he was there. At the same time, I had my drinks refilled fast and felt like we were well taken care of. Not only that. It was a good price also! Two entrees, two types of tea, and a side of rice all for under $20!

I would take these over cheese burgers anyday.

Really, I should have a frequent Pho card. I come here alone. I come here with friends. i come here whenever i can. I have probably eaten here 60 times. You would think i would have worked my way through their menu by now, but unfortunately I get stuck on favorites and order them again and again. Then eventually i try something else which then becomes my favorite. The current favorite for me is the Turmeric Noodles. It's a spicy soup, especially once you throw in all the jalapenos they give you on the side. It also contains shrimp, pork, and jicama - and peanuts on the top, as well as a couple of sesame shrimp crackers which are great for dipping. And what a bargain for $7.50. We have also ordered the green papaya and lotus salads and they are crunchy, exotic, and refreshing. My previous favorite was the Spicy Beef and Lemongrass Soup., full of noodles, beef, pork, Last time i was there, my friend ordered the grilled lemongrass beef, which was wrapped around grilled onions and served over vermicelli. It was also delicious. The service here is always gracious. the owners obviously take great pride in their restaurant. It is sparkling clean and beautifully decorated.

I'm extremely dissapointed in the quality of service. Who would expect Pho Van to discriminate against their own ethnicity. Prompt seating is available to caucasians or if you bring a caucasian friend. However, would have to agree that their food is good and the atmosphere is quite nice. Perhaps Pho Van should employ non-asian staff to provide better service.

Pho Van was the first place I ever tried the infamous "pho", and since that faithul day back in 8th grade, I've been craving it ever since. I've been to every vietnamese resturant in the metro area here in Portland, some spectacular at a great price, and some terrible and over-priced. Pho Van has always held itself in the top tier of the pho around Portland, along with excellent service, a beautiful setting in which to dine, and some of the friendliest staff you can find. Since first eating there, I've been to every new resturant they have put out, while still being good, none compare to the 82nd Pho Van. They definetly deserve a hand.

Pho Van on 82nd has become one of our favorite restaurants, period. My soon to be husband and I visit it often and we've taken other friends and family there many times and everyone simply loves it. The food is very fresh, well-flavored and served by very friendly, and polite staff. We've always had wonderful service and we love the authentic decor including the Vietnamese stringed instruments hung on the wall and the rickshaw and the motorbike! Recommended dishes from us would include: grilled shrimp, chicken or pork with rice noodles with delicious nuoc mam poured over it, Pho, spicy seafood soup (a real winner) , green papaya salad with shrimp chips, and yes, the avocado shakes and ginger-flavored creme brulee are a must and compliment the meals well. The prices are extremely reasonable. All in all, Pho Van is an excellent value and a very pleasant dining experience.

My dining partner has been trying to get me to Pho Van on 82nd for months & I resisted because I tried some Pho at a restaurant on NW 23rd & it was gross. Finally she took me last week & I was so impressed I've been trying to get back there since. We had salad rolls and there was an interesting peanut sauce to go with it. At first I thought the sauce had an unpleasant bitterness to it. After a few more dips of the rolls in the sauce I found it to be a good combo of sweet and earthy that went well with the rolls. My dining partner had been telling me about the avacado shakes (which you can't get at the Hawthorne location) and again I thought eeewwww. But NO these shakes are a stupendous! A mellow flavor that is cool & creamy on the tounge and a perfect compliment/balance to the myriad of flavors in the pho. The soup is so very good! A combination of ginger, garlic, onion and goodness knows what else. I had the round steak in the basic pho. The meat was incredibly lean! A small bowl was huge and I couldn't even finish it. Truly the meal was just wonderful & I can't wait to get back there!

They don't cater to Vegetarians. If you're reading this PhoVan please start offering more Vegetarian Friendly food!!

Good service, great ambiance, amazing food! The ginger creme-brulee is to die for! Try the avacado smoothies and the honey-glazed chicken wings. Everything is a culinary masterpiece in every way! I love this restaurant after dark. It's very romantic. In spite of the great prices, it's still on my fine-dining list. In fact, it's where I'm taking my fiance tonight for his birthday.

This place was remodeled a while back I know but I used to go to this place when it was old and further down on 82nd. It still has the same great taste but now it is alot nice. The pho is great, the creme bruelee is wonderful and the avacado smoothies are great as well. You have to go here if you love vietnamese.

Pho Van on 82nd is supposed to be the more authentic Vietnamese restaurant of all the Pho Vans in town, so to call it "pretty damn gross," as a previous reviewer did, seems a bit ignorant. If you want your pretty, sterile, mainstream pan-Asian food, stick with the Pearl version. For those who want the tastier, more authentic Vietnamese cuisine, 82nd will do, but Pho Hung is even better. The Seven Courses of Beef here was actually a little disappointing. When I took my parents here (they're Vietnamese) they were aghast at the small portions and lack of flavor. Pho Van on 82nd will do in a pinch, if Pho Hung isn't available.

Famous for their Pho soup, which my husband adores, I have never tried their pho but adore their grilled pork and shrimp over rice noodle bowl. Their menu is overflowing with authentic dishes that have passed judgement and gotten the thumbs up by my Vietnamese in laws. The veggies and herbs in the bowl are fresh, meat is grilled just perfect, juicy and tasty. The sauce to use at your discretion poured over the bowl is just right, not too spicy, sweet or salty. I have been to Pho Van more times than I can remember and always get great quality food. Pho Van also has additional location in SW and on Hawthorne, these locations have much higher prices than this original location. Service has always been quick and friendly yet not intrusive. We will continue to go back to this location over and over.

PROS: great food
CONS: parking lot can surpass capacity at busy times and other parking is hard

Pho Van is one of our favorite Vietnamese restaurants in Portland where we always take our out-of-town guests. Granted, the service at the SE 82nd location can be slow and unattentive sometimes, the prices are great for the food quality as well as the ambiance. The salads and desserts (3-bean dessert) are our favorites and ones of the best we've had at any vietnamese restaurants.

After many delightful meals at the Pho Van in the pearl, I was excited to head out to the Pho Van on 82nd when a friend suggested it. I was very dissapointed though. The vegetarian menu was even more dismal that that of the location in the Pearl, and what they did have was pretty damn gross (greasy and flavorless).
I was also dissapointed that their coconut juice is served in a small glass instead of a whole coconut.

Pho Van rules and always has ruled as the best Pho in Portland. I've patronized Pho Van for the past 10 years + , always trying different Pho restaurants as well. I always go back to Pho Van for the best Bung Mang Vit, Beef Soup, Goi Cuon and the plethora of other expertly prepared Vietnamese dishes.
The servise is always personable and efficient and the restuarant space is well designed and decorated. The restaurant is always clean and you can't beat the prices!!!!!!!

Pros: Food, Service, Cleanliness

Cons: Nothing

.

my family and I tried 7 beef courses meal and they were all mouth watering! I really loved beef salad and a pot dish with rice papers. Unlike the other Asian restaurants, the interior was very sophisticated and clean. Service was very good and we were full and happy under $50.

I always had great food at this restaurant. The "Bun Ga" Honey Lemongrass Chicken with Vermicelli Noodles is my absolute favorite. The price is right too...only 7.00 for the entree. Nice restaurant. Would definitely recommend.

Ok so the restaurant was a little busy but waiting for your food to arrive for 40 minutes? We were about to walk out but our food came. We ordered the oiliest springrolls we've ever had! I took a bite and the oil was dripping down my chin. Plus, one third of it was burnt. Our waitress never apologized for our long wait. Chicken curry was so-so, my lemongrass soup tasted good. Overall bad bad experience, never go back!

Cons: slow service, our food, expensive

Very nice restaurant, with comprehensve menu (alot of dishes for two or more people), try the crispy rolls, for an appetizer ($5 for 4) I had the glazed flame broiled pork and shrimp with rice. The pork and shrimp was excellent but I could have handled more than three half skewers. My partner had the beef special pho, it was decent (watch out for the hot peppers on the side). I think we'll try a hot pot next time. The space, prices and service were all great. Try the fresh brewed mango black iced tea (free refils $1.25)

The price can't be beat! We enjoy Pho Van a lot. Having eaten at several other Pho places in Portland, I think this one has the best food and it definitely has the best ambience.

2/2005 They have recently redone the decor--love it! They have also revamped the menu---we LOVE the 7 (?) Courses of Beef. It is great fun---You must try it!! It is an excellent value and is great for a change from pho. Be prepared to try new things!

I think the flavor of the beef broth is great (although not quite as good as before) and the curry isn't bad. Sometimes the service is great, other times we feel ignored. We get carry-out frequently and the lady who takes our order ALWAYS gets it wrong. Overall excellent value and a nice place to eat.

This is my new favorite place! The atmosphere is very spacious with big booths and georege nelson lighting. Service ~ Almost TOO good. The food is by far the best asian food in the city. Big portions, low prices. I went with a group of 4 and the bill was $50. That included drinks! The papaya salad with beef was incredible. And the dessert? Creme Brulee that had an asian kick to it and out of this world banana bread pudding. So many choices on the menu to try, I'll definately be back! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

I was afraid that the renovation of the Pho Van on 82nd would make it to fancy. On the contrary, it has a warmer, more comfortable feel and some of the new food items are delish! Try the Roasted Catfish. It's so good, it's magical. I'm still waiting for the "Beef in 7 Courses" and hot pot offerings, which, as of mid-January, were on the menu, but still not available. The pho is some of the best in the city -- fantastic broth, fresh, abundant vegetables, and a variety of sauces.

I disagree with what the person said about the prices-- they aren't bad at all.

We ate there recently for $45-- 3 adults with a meal and an order of salad rolls each, plus 1 toddler. That included the tip.

Two of us had the skewered shrimp on top of the noddles, and the third had a dish you put together yourself, with ground chicken/shrimp on sugar cane, and all kinds of toppings.

Last time I went to Pho Van, the service was so slow. Then once we got our food, one soup wasn't even very hot. The meat in the other one looked a little to raw. Plus it didn't all come out at the same time so I shared my entree with my daughter. All in all we spent the whole evening there on a weeknight when we just wanted to come eat and leave.

Maybe success is more then they can handle, or they are just getting tired.

The ambiance is great, service is above average, and food is so-so. Sorry, I came from the largest Vietnamese community outside of Vietnam, so it's probably not fair to compare. I had this big crepe thing stuffed with vegatables: the bean sprouts overwhelmed the dish and the shell/pastry was very oily. Their Cafe Sua Da, Vietnamese coffee, did not come with a filter. The Pho was better than other Viet restuarants, but the Cha Gio was weak and overpriced. Pho Van's Beaverton location is disorganized, but this is to be expected from a new restaurant. If you like Viet eggrolls, there's a little bakery on Powell right before 82nd as you head east.

Not a super elegant restaurant but the food quality was high, it was clean, and the food tasted like vietnamese.

They are a bit sparse on the meat so with the noodles you might wish to order extra meat.

Are you kidding me? this is one of the most expensive Vietnamese Restaurants in Portland. They jack up their prices every year and the food isn't even the best. Check out other Vietnamese places before coming back to this place. You'll save money and youll get a better meal.

I eat here often, and it doesn't cost any more than fast food, really. You get lots of food, the service is good (but sometimes slow), and the whole time I've been going there the food has always been consistent (not a "tonight they have the good cook in the kitchen" kind of place). Food is good, appetizers are good, desert is good, and the atmosphere is nice.

I have eaten at the 82nd Pho Van many times and have been consistently pleased. The pho is wonderful, but I would heartily recommend trying the abundant specials available daily. One dish I loved offered Viet sausages, shrimp sticks, mu-shu style wrappers, a plate of greens and herbs, and a couple of wonderful dipping sauces. The waitress happy demonstrated the contruction process, also. I will admit that it's not "cheap" per se but it IS a great deal. I have taken many people, including my parents, to Pho Van, and everyone's been impressed! Great place!

Delicious, inexpensive, one of the healthier choices you can make. BF and I eat pho at least once a week. If getting it "to go", ask for the noodles uncooked, and then boil 'em in the broth at home to save the gummy noodleball that can develop if you don't get home fast enough. Great food, charming servers, authentic feel, a great value!! The open-ness of the dining room isn't my favorite, but have never had a bad meal.
