My grandchildren attend this fabulous school and although I do not usually take the time to write reviews but I think people should know how great this place is for young children. The teachers are incredible. They always give me the best information about my little ones from funny stories to things they are working on to challenges they might have experienced. The program is so well run with so much respect for everyone who steps into it each day that I needed to make sure other people and parents out there knew about the impact it has had on my family. Job well done Happy Hollow.

We cannot overstate the impact Happy Hollow has had on our lives and our child's growth and development as a person and a student. Everything about this school makes it the best choice we have ever made for our family--from the teachers, to the events, to the communication, to the kindness within the learning community itself. Everything about it is a standard that will be hard to replace as we relocate. We will miss everyone and every part of this wonderful learning environment!

Ok, after reading some of these reviews, I can't help but laugh. I am sorry but what daycare is 100% perfect, wait let's get real, what Job is 100% perfect? My son has been attending this school for a few months now, ( whom has never attended a day care in his life) and absolutely loves it here. His teacher is friendly and personable and my son talks about her constantly! Laura (the owner) has been nothing but professional, kind, outgoing, and fantastic! The criticism on their eco friendly practices is quite amusing as well..I toured over a dozen child care centers before choosing Happy Hollow, and not one brought up the words eco friendly. I challenge you to find a daycare whom is 100% eco friendly, at least they are creating awareness, and moving in the right direction..eco friendly doesn't happen over night. So to the parents out there, my two cents is.. my child is happy, his parents are happy, and Happy Hollow has yet to prove us wrong!

Our daughter has been attending this school for over 2.5 yrs ('07-'10). We adore it. The owners/directors are extremely knowledgeable, responsive to parents needs and very kind and generous people. \n\nThe teachers truly love and care for the children in a way that gave us confidence that we had chosen the right program. They are fair-minded and very calm in their approach to disciplining students that may be acting out or behaving badly.\n\nWe had our daughter in a very expensive daycare program, Knowledge Beginnings in Tigard, which she started when she was 3 mos old. Which was nice. But it was a franchise and ended up feeling a little too clinical for our tastes. So, when I changed jobs, we started to look around at all of our options. No school could compare to the outdoor space and home-like environment Happy Hollow provides. There are huge trees that provide a natural canopy from all that OR rain. The building, itself, is a large, converted modern home. \n\nWe started soon after the ownership had changed hands and there was a period of flux and adjustment with some of the staff - which is referenced in some of the less positive reviews on this site. But, even during this period, the Laura and Mario were very sensitive to the needs of the parents, provided assurances and always made it clear that they put the children first.\n\nWe moved out to Portland 6 yrs ago and don't have any family out here. Happy Hollow was very flexible and really provided so much support for us during some logistically difficult times.\n\nThere's a professional chef on staff that provides DELICIOUS and nutritious meals for the children. \n\nThey have a large garden area, which the children plant and tend throughout the year. They compost. They recycle. They use green cleaning agents. \n\nThey have a kiln (which we happily donated!) and the kids make really creative art projects.\n\nThey take full advantage of Kennedy Park next door for picnics and other events. \n\nThey take some really cool field trips to some great local spots.\n\nYou can choose to have your child enroll in Gymstars and/or Soccer Shots, and, in the Summer, swim lessons at the Beaverton Pool\n\nMost importantly, our daughter had FUN and made really wonderful friends. In addition to learning her letters, numbers, shapes and colors, she learned how to respect her classmates, how to share and take turns and, in the process, has really developed into the most articulate, sweetest (but strong-willed) little girl.\n\nAnother point that should be made is that the other parents are really great. Playdates and birthday parties were all very easy for us. \n\nWe're sad that we're moving back East. It was a true privilege to be part of such a nurturing community and we will always be grateful for the experience!

We want to thank Happy Hollow for giving us back our happy grandson. When he first started daycare, he was placed in a very large modern facility. This place was rated very highly, but had very large classes, and a lot of staff turnover, so there wasnt a lot of personal attention, and not much structure. This turned our happy-go-lucky grandson into a sad, angry boy.\r\n\r\nWhen he started at Happy Hollow he was worried about the change, but within a week he started to blossom, and after two he was back to his former self, and Liked going to school. Now we have a hard time getting him to go home. He wants to stay and be with his friends. It is indeed school, there is structure, the kids have regular classroom activities, and a very extraordinary Teacher Dani who loves them, and they love her back. \r\n\r\nEvery teacher who has worked with our grandson is caring and has high standards that the children desire to meet. This is a fantastic place and we give it the highest recommendation to all those looking for that special place for their children.\r\n\r\nDave and Nancy Scheele

I have a daughter who goes here and we are very happy. Not only do we think this school under charges for its tuition, but they are making improvements to the school all the time! I have to say I do not know where the non-eco friendly comments come from as the school uses all eco friendly products, each classroom recycles, there is organic food on the menu and an organic garden. I am not sure there is alot more to do!

Happy Hollow does ok, but they could really stand to improve. They charge more than any other preschool I know of, and yet I always feel like the teachers are more interested in socializing with one another than with paying attention to the needs of the children. This is not true across the board (with all teachers), but it is something I've observed countless times with several of them. One of the things that drove me to select Happy Hollow in the first place was the eco-friendly touting they are given. I don't understand the basis of this. It must be a holdover from the way the previous owners did business. I think current owners Mario and Laura do a very nice job, but they don't have any environmental focus that I've noticed. They are nice people, but they need a little restructuring of their rates (DOWN) and they need teachers who aren't interested in kids to GO.

My son has been at Happy Hollow for the last 7 months and has literally blossomed. He enjoys going to school each day to be with his friends and teachers. Each day he comes home bubbling with news about the special projects and experiences he has had at school.\r\n\r\nThe teachers & staff are amazing and have made Happy Hollow a magical place to learn and grow for children as well as instilling in them a respect for others and the environment.\r\n\r\nI would highly recommend this preschool/kindergarten for anyone looking for an extraordinary place for your kids to experience school for the first time.

Our son has been here for two years and he will be graduating from the pre-school program. We as parents decided to place him in the school's kindergarten program to continue his happy hollow experience. Its been the best of times since he started here and he has evolved into a confident happy child. \r\nThis is genuinely a special place for young children to grow, learn, and have fun. We give our acknowledgement and support to the staff and the owners for continuing to operate such a wonderful place.

This place is wonderful for children. They are happy, always busy, and a very supportive staff to make it all happen. My wife is now at peace that we found a perfect fit for our children. The minute we walked inside the gates of happy hollow and saw all the children having a great time we liked it. After talking to the director who happens to be the owner, we love it. After talking to some of the staff, we're ecstatic about this place. The place is full to capacity which confirms our joy for happy hollow.

I have a son in kindergarten and a daughter in the preschool classroom at Happy Hollow. We have been very happy with the curriculum, the teachers--who have all been the same the past two years--and the environment. We recommend this school to families looking for a great, exciting learning environment with wonderful teachers for their children's early years!

After searching long and hard, we found Happy Hollow was everything they said they would be--child centered, creative, structured around social responsibility and awareness, positive, and with a focus on not only the whole child but our family as well. We love the gatherings around food in the kitchen, the music all day, the creative art/literacy and science curriculum and the good feelings we get coming to school everyday. We have favorite teachers (their names are a constant source of story telling by our little guy) but think everyone is professional yet kind and compassionate. We think its great what they do and why!

jencc your review best describes this wonderful school. This will be our second year at HH and we are very happy to be here. We have a son and a daughter at different levels and both are getting the appropriate early childhood education. The staff is great, the place is definitely Happy Hollow, the administration is excellent, and most importantly the children are all having fun.\r\n\r\nMy husband and I would like to extend our greatest appreciation to the new owners for taking Happy Hollow to another level. You are absolutely positively correct jencc about the negative remarks. They are posted just about the same time an employee who didn't make the grade is replaced. \r\n\r\nTo all parents looking for a place for your child or children, HH is PDXBest. Hopefully you'll get in. There is a wait list. To all those who made the negative comments, I hope you all found your joy.\r\n\r\nlastlong

My family loves this school. It has become part of our ""village"" raising our kids. I have gotten to know many of the teachers well, and talk to them each day. They have genuine affection for each child in their care, and can tell you all the funny things that happened during the day and progress that has been made. Their time there is valuable to me, because I know they are growing and learning in a positive environment.\r\n\r\nMy daughter (3) is in the Ladybugs class, and her teachers are loving and firm. In additon to having fun, she is learning conflict resolution, and self-discipline. They are helping her and all the kids in her class with potty training. She adores them and is happy to go to ""school"". I have trouble getting her to go home at the end of the day. My son is in the kindergarten class. The teacher is strict and kind, and is an amazing teacher. She has a wonderful system for teaching reading and writing, and the kids love and respect her. Many of them return to her for tutoring after they enter public school. \r\n\r\nHappy Hollow is the opposite of the shiny, sterile, institutional setting of most daycare/preschools that I have seen. I chose it over the Goddard school for this reason, and have not been disappointed. They have two creative, ecclectic playgrounds and a garden where the kids grow vegetables. There is a kitchen where the cook makes healthy, yummy food for snacks and lunch and where the kids eat. She has been great about accommodating my kids' allergies. It feels very comfortable, like a home, but with all the safety regulations of a school.\r\n\r\nThe husband and wife directors of this school are professional, competent, and have many years of experience in child care. When they hire teachers, they are choosy, which is perhaps why there are some disgruntled people out there. If someone isn't able to maintain their standards, they keep looking. I am very happy with the direction they are taking the school and feel lucky to have found them.

Cons: wish it were closer to my home

One of our daughters just graduated from Happy Hollow's kinder program and our second daughter is a\r\npre-k. This children's center is all about fun early childhood education. We've been at this center for a year and my husband and I decided there's no better place in Portland for our other daughter that's in pre-k. \r\n\r\nBefore moving to Oregon, I searched on-line for a place for our two daughers. After finding five schools in the web we were anxious to see these places in person. We looked at all five and the one that we felt very comfortable with is Happy Hollow. The school is a great place for future child educators to visit. \r\n\r\nThe staff is great. The administration and operation is a good small business model. Location and facility is convenient and unique. And the icing on the cake, the school is eco-friendly . \r\n\r\nOur daughters are blessed.

Can't please them all. This children center is one of a kind. A great environment for kids to grow and learn.\r\nThe staff is great and they all look happy. The director has excellent credentials and the place is operated professionally. Comments made by teleflora and geemom have no merit. You both sound like former employees. After reviewiing all the negative comments, it is apparent the motivation behind such meritless remarks is personal.\r\n\r\nMy children have been here for two years. Lot's of great improvement has taken place. Parents have made great contributions to improve the facility. A nicely renovated bathroom was recently donated by parents. Happy Hollow is moving in the right direction. There's a waiting list. How about them apples!\r\n\r\nCheers teleflora & geemom. \r\n\r\nMove on people and get a life.\r\n\r\n

Sorry but i just have to put in my 2 cents here. I have spoken with many parents who agree with me that Happy Hollows is going down hill quick. I have had my kid there in the past, and know what the old happy hollows use to be like. It is nothing like it is now. Now the Director is employing her own kids to work there as teachers, when they have no credentials? Please..... \r\n\r\nTo anyone out there who is considering happy hallows because they are cheaper than the rest, do yourself and your kid a favor and spend a little more and look elsewhere. They have all new staff except for a few that are left, that should tell you something. I fully expect this place to go out of business soon.

Pros: Nice yard

Cons: To many to list them all.

.

This daycare is awful, the place smells, it's dirty and staff is always changing. If you read the reviews a staff member left a 5 star review? Gee, I wonder if that one is bias. My son went there for a year but after multiple problems with the staff and lack at teaching that was really going on in the pre-school class I pulled him out and found much higher quality, safer care elsewhere..I would advise you do the same.

My two boys have been attending Happy Hollow for the past two years and it has been the best experience! My 7 yr old attended the kindergarten program at Happy Hollow last year and is now reading at a 3rd grade level. Teacher Emily is the best! \r\n\r\nMy youngest is in the pre-school program for the past two year. The Frog teachers are great and take wonderful care of my son. I have no complaints.

My child happens to be in the classroom Luzmere mentioned in her shallow review. She didn't mentioned the fact that the former teacher left for parenthood without ample notice for Happy Hollow to find a qualified replacement for her. She didn't mentioned the fact that Happy Hollow went through three weeks interview only to find two qualified teachers for a working interview. She didn't mentioned the fact that none of these two teachers met the standards of us parents, Happy Hollow staff, and the owners. What you didn't know Luzmere is a fact that a popular decision is made by all parents, staff, and the owners on who gets hired at Happy Hollow. What you should know Luzmere is we are all happy at the popular decision we made here at Happy Hollow Community. Did you know that our community will be here and it will be popular as ever as long as we have people like you who visit our website.......Be Happy\r\n

My daughters have been at Happy Hollow for a year and we are very satisfied at what has taken place at this center. As I was paying my daughter's tuition yesterday the owner's were at their website reading the reviews. They showed me the two most recent criticism and I felt the need to defend the owners and the\r\ngood work they've done. I enrolled my two daughters the same time the new owners bought this place. After two months I informed the owners of some issues they needed to address. One is my daugther's unpleasant teacher who consistently looked like Cruela Devil (from the movie One Hundred and One Dalmatians). Another is the cleanliness of the kitchen and dining area. It needed improvement. Well, both issues were addressed and I am happy with the decisions the new owners made. Cruela Devil was replaced by a very pleasant happy teacher, and the cook was replaced by an energetic young lady who keeps the place nice and tidy. The new bus driver is also an addtional improvement.\r\n\r\nBy the way, Cynthia and Bird need to improve on their spelling and grammar. \r\n\r\nKudos to the owners.\r\n\r\n

Found Happy Hollow through one of their flyers at one of my daughters school. Checked out the open house and my husband loved it. Our daughter's joy and excitement upon entering the gates of Happy Hollow led us to ask more questions. What we found is a children's center owned and operated by a passionate couple with 20 years experience in the business. After our long conversation with both of them,\r\n(they have two teen-age girls) my husband and I felt like we've known them for awhile. We decided to enroll our daughter this coming summer knowing that she will be in good hands with the owners at the helm. My husband and I left with a good feeling that we found a wonderful place for our daughter.\r\n\r\nBlessed Couple

Attended the open house with my son and I was very impressed with this center. Very well set up, indoor is clean and smells like lemongrass. The outdoor play area (two) is spaciously natural with big trees and a trail leads to a park which the center uses during summer according to the owner. I enquired about all the teachers credentials and the director happily showed me all their certifications and earned credits for continuing early childhood education. This was very positive to me as a parent in addition to what I saw.\r\nI showed my husband the place the following day and he was also convinced this is the right place for our son. We will be starting next month. Few negativity will not dampen this great place but will only make it more popular......waiting list already proves it. Come see for yourself. \r\n\r\nGreenWorld

went to the open house, and was very disappointed.\r\nthe place smells bad, looks filthy and the staff is mostly all new with no experience. It looks like the staff change constantly, which is no good for little children, they need constancy. this place doesn't seem to be able to provide it.

it makes me wonder who writes this great fantastic reviews, maybe the owners in order to keep voting for themselves as the best childcare in Portland? \r\nthis place used to be the best one, it use to be the best place next to home. But since the new owners arrived things changed drastic!\r\nthey stop using organic food, they stop using environmental friendly cleaners, but still promote themselves as eco-center.!\r\nthis place is dirty and a very bad smell impregnates the hole place! what happened to the essential oils?\r\nwhat happened to the cleaning?\r\n we were very happy here, we found dedicated teachers, we found a place were my boys could be happy, grow and learn, but short after the new owners arrived, our beloved teacher left, just to be replaced by a non certified, without experience teacher that show no emotions, and treated our younger son cold and sometimes disrespectful. We ask for a change of classroom which was granted, but we just discover that this teacher is as well living soon. \r\nit is sad to see a place go down like this.

Cons: bad staff

Our son has enjoyed Happy Hollow so much. The classrooms and cafe area are close together, and kids interact amongst the classes sharing play time. There are two amazingly fun outdoor play areas for the kids, in a wooded setting. The teachers are outgoing, supportive and cooperative with each other and each others' classes, and enthusiastic participants in the children's' growth. It is a treat to have our son in a place that is homey, educational, environmentally "non clinical" and makes him like to be there.

Been here for three months and have referred friends to this children's center. It is a great place for children to learn and grow with all the supporting casts from the staff to the owners. Parents and kids love coming here. We see it every morning when drop our kids.\r\n\r\nGlad to see a reality show.

Pros: happy children

Cons: should be more places like this

Happy Hollow Children's Center is how every children's center should be. The environment, the staff, and of course the ownership/management. We are very happy to have found this place through a ""word of mouth"" referral. Children have a wide range of space to learn and grow. Happy Hollow should be replicated/expanded to another location or community to spread more joy and happiness to children and parents all over Oregon.\r\n\r\nHappy@Happy Hollow!

After meeting with many preschools (over eight) prior to deciding on Happy Hollow, I was finally satisfied that our child would be in the right environment to learn and grow. Not only are the staff qualified and sincerely interested in your child...but they take the time to involve you along the way. \r\n\r\nThe facilities are fun for kids, creative, and welcoming. The nearby greenspace adds to the original location which thankfully not clinical or institutional. \r\n\r\nWe are very pleased with our choice! \r\n\r\n

We think Happy Hollow has fulfilled everything we expected from it for our daughters and more! It is a fantastic place on an environmental level and it is the best community of learners and teachers that we have been apart of for many years. The staff are vibrant, and the students are engaged learners from the preschool classrooms to the kindergarten class to the after-school students. We enjoy working alongside the Director who has a great amount of passion for her philosophy of learning and for implementing a program that provides an enriching example of what learning should really look, taste, feel, sound and smell like! Congratulations Happy Hollow for getting rants and raves from us!\r\n

We are new residents to Oregon and found Happy Hollow to be everything it said it was. It is a fantastic place with an environment that does provide an eco-healthy and eco-friendly environment. I know that the Director had complained about the landlord's response and treatment of a beehive that had been found in a tree on the school's grounds so parents need to know when and where to place blame in relation to environmental problems and issues. The school provides a menu that incorporates organic fruits, vegetables and snacks into daily meals and also provides days of the week that are entirely organic meal experiences for young children. We think it is fantastic and we would like to go to school here! If only we were that young again!\r\nCheers,\r\nsam

Pros: Eco-Healthy environment and Knowledgable staff

We have decided to leave this center at the end of this summer for many reasons but one of the main one has been the changes in its ecohealthy childcare practices. This was one of the draws of this place for us. Ever since new owners have taken over they seem to be cutting corners on everything and not taking ecohealthy practices serious. A few weeks ago when I took my child to the bathroom I noticed the esstential oils that were used have been replaced with an automated spray scents! Their method to get rid of a nest of bees was toxic sprays. Even worse was the lack of respect shown when the dead bees fell to the ground. My child came home with an ""art project"" of dead bees glued to paper. What happened to respect for all living things? Staff questioned agreed that practices have changed but they are afraid to talk to management. Too much tension here and no more team work. Too bad. It has been a special place to bring my child until now.

I just started at Happy Hollow and I'm very happy to see what a wonderful place this will be for me. The staff are all friendly with the exception of the one I replaced. The owners are really nice and they love their business. We had an open house for summer and fall enrollment the other day and the place was buzzing with activity. Nice place to work at and a the next best place for all children.\r\n\r\nWish you were here.

Cons: none that I can think of...

We have been at Happy Hollow for over two years and find the staff highly educated, knowledgeable, creative and professional. The center is used as a model preschool for several environments classes which is wonderful because it is a great environment, not only physically but in all other aspects of development for young learners. I have volunteered at Happy Hollow for many, many events and have always been very happy with the staff's level of committment and professionalism. I pick my child up during nap time every day and the staff are always playing music from classical to jazz from around the world and children who do not nap are allowed to play in different areas set up by the staff. Real life experiences are provided in the classrooms from woodworking to art to literacy to science and math which helps my child explore and experiment his way to knowledge. We love it and highly recommend it.

Had my child there for over a year. Had to pull him out because my kid said his teacher was holding him down during nap time, and hurting him while doing this. Tried to talk to director about it, she listened but you could tell she had the schools best interest at heart telling me her teachers would never do something like that. I talked a week later with a mom who also pulled thier kid out, and did so because thier kid came home with a blister from being burned off a hotplate? When happy hollows was questioned why the kids were allowed to get close to a hotplate, thier response was ""The kids really love melting crayons with the hotplate"". Do not bring your kids to happy hollows, we were happy with them until we pulled the rug up and took a close look at what is really going on there.

I have one child in the Kindergarten and one in daycare and they both love it. The Kindergarten is very academic and creative. Phonics, math and science keep them learning and challenged. My child's penmanship has improved dramatically. The outdoor play areas include a construction site complete with hard hats and vests, an outdoor stage, a boat, two play houses and tons more things for the kids to do. In the summer the kids work in the garden and take lots of fun field trips. The teachers are awesome. It's the best.

I have two kids at Happy Hollow and couldn't be happier. The place itself is so wonderful lots of things to play on and explore. But the best thing about Happy Hollow is the staff - the teachers go above and beyond in caring for my kids. They are loving but also give each child their own space to grow. I highly recommend this place for kids of all ages. It really is the next best thing to home.

A wonderful natural setting in the middle of an urban area. Great outdoor playgrounds, has garden plots, outdoor theater, area to build forts and allow kids to use their imagination! Small class sizes and great staff . A very special place for kids and families.
