Good service, good food, GREAT VIEW! A tad on the spendy side but this is where the birthday girl wanted to go. Food and drinks were good but nothing outstanding. If we go again, we'll probably just sit in the bar to enjoy the view.

Arrive at the Chart House around 7:15pm. Was greeted by a very nice valet personnel. Got into the restaurant, headed downstairs for the reserved table. Was expected to be greet by a server or somebody, but no one was there. Found our friends were sitting at the table, we then move on to the table and took our seat. about 15min later the server came and took our orders. While waiting for our orders, we decided to add some more orders, but for about 15 min, we did not see our server anywhere. She finally showed up so we placed our additional orders. We waited almost an hour for the foods that we ordered and they are still not out yet. In addition, we could not find our server. Oh..let me clarify...we waited for our DESSERT (not dinner) for an hour. We did not order any dinner because we were told that the dessert was very good at the Chart house, so we decided to have our dinner at home and go to the Chart house for dessert. If dessert took about an hour to be served, i do not even want to find out how long would it take if we would have ordered dinner (actual food).????
Oh did i also mention that we have kids with us? Luckly, we have already had our dinner before we went to the Chart house.
I was very dissapointed tonight with the service provided by the Chart House.

Cons: Poor service, Food preparation took very long

This restaurant is one of the premier locations for a night out for fine dining. This place is not cheap but the food is wonderful. My husband ordered the most tender steak I have ever had that had me wishing I had not ordered the salmon (though the salmon was wonderful!) The service is thoughtful. The view is spectacular.

I've eaten here many times over the years with some great experiences. My mom arrived from out of town on a wonderful sunny day and mentioned the Chart House for lunch because of the view.

Everything except the clam chowder was disappointing. We ordered an Ahi Tuna appetizer that arrived after our meals and was probably the worst I've ever had. Their Caesar Salad was terrible and under dressed. Service was also substandard. It took us over an hour to get in and out despite essentially ordering soup and salad.

The table of 6 seated next to us was there when we arrived and had still not been served when we left. When one of the patron's complained, the waitress actually told the customer that if he was in a hurry, he should have arrived for lunch at 11:30am!

It seems the Chart House has new owners (The Laundry Company). I wrote them about my experience and have not heard a thing back. In the age of social media, their lack of service, quality and customer relations has me wondering whether they'll even be in business a year from now.

This place used to be good about 10 years ago but it has really gone down hill. The only thing this has going for it is the view. We went this last Saturday night at 7:30. we ordered 2 apetizers and they were OK. Then we ordered our food. I ordered the Macadamia nut crusted Mahi Mahi, my partner ordered the sea scallops and another friend ordered the salmon and another friend ordered the prime rib. Well 10 minutes later our waitress came back to tell us the Mahi Mahi and the Sea scallops were not available. HELLO it is Saturday night at prime seating and you are already out of things. Well I think they were never available and we should have been told. So my partner ordered the prime rib and I ordered the shrimp trio. So our order came and my dinner was not what I ordered it was shrimp stuffed with crab and looked like it came out of a box and was HORRIBLE and I sent it back. The "coconut rice" also looked like it came out of a box and tasted like it as well. I can not even describe the so called PRIME RIB. It was not prime it was not even choice it was old, nasty and I know prime rib and it was not that for sure!!! My partner had ordered it about 2 month earlier and it was bad then as well and we even asked if it got better and told of our experience to the waitress and she blamed it on the corporate office???? We think she was on drugs. NOTHING was anywhere near the quality that should have been for almost 30.00 an entree, the martini's were nothing special except for they were 12.00 each!!! The only reason we went back after our bad experience 2 months ago is a friend gave us a gift card. I have already told them not to send us anymore as we will not be going back and if you know what is good for you DO NOT GO HERE!! Portland has to many GREAT restaurants for you to settle for this. And if you do think the food is good here you do not know much about good food.

I cant believe that anyone has given this restaurant 5 stars. The atmosphere is nice enough, and there is a nice view, but other than that, I would rather eat at Macdonald's, or even Arby's. At least there, you get your money's worth. we had Oysters Rockefeller and lobster spring rolls. The oysters were dirty, unwashed with muscles still attached, and had a nasty bitter taste, and the lobster spring rolls were more like frozen craw fish egg rolls w/ sour cabbage and a mustard sauce. Mustard sauce w/ lobster??? Our entrees were equally a let down and cost $33 apiece. For that kind of price, you could eat at any restaurant in Portland. On top of the horrible(even for a chain) food, our service was inattentive, and awkward. She never asked us how our food was, she brought our entree when we were still eating our apps, took my knife and never brought another one, gave us the check right after giving us the deserts, and even charged us another $3 for a hot tea refill! I know restaurants, Ive worked at many, from low end to high, and this place would be great, if it were charging $12 for entrees, but for $33, man oh man! Its a nice location on Terwilliger, right near where a recent land slide took out a house. After eating there, I think the land slide was close, but missed its mark.

This is the place to go on a clear sunny day. The Chart House has one of the best locations in Portland, tucked up in the west hills with unbelievable views to the east. They have a very well rounded menu, and can't ever recall being disappointed. For whatever reason, I always seem to order something off their seafood menu, but their steaks are very good. I would highly recommend it for dinner, or even a place to go for drinks.

We went to the chart house for dinner on Saturday. We had 7:30 dinner time. We were seated at about 7:40. They moved us to the lower level it was quiet and an much more personal setting. The waiter didn't rush us. I ended up being there for 3 plus hours and loving ever second of the dinner. By far the best service i have ever had. That includes having eaten at the Benson Hotel. This resturant is a must go to for anyone who is looking for an awesome dinner. The view made it even better.

The only reason I'm not giving them 4 stars is because the waitress knocked the water into my lap (no big deal though). Food was excellent as always. We'll be back!

I went here for the first time for a work lunch w/ a group of 9. The view was beautiful even though it was cloudy. The restaurant was pretty dead - I think there were 3 or 4 other tables, each with 2-3 people. After we sat down the waitress spilled ice-cold water down my boss's back and just said "oops, did I get you?" and didn't even apologize. Then it took us over an hour to get our food even though 4 of us ordered salads. The waitress also forgot who ordered what and was giving people the wrong food. The hot food was cold as if it sat for a long time and we watched our salads sit for 20 minutes before they were brought w/ the rest of the food. You can see the kitchen (it's in the middle of the restaurant) and we only saw 1 chef prepping and cooking. While we waited an hour for the food, not one person came to re-fill our water, soda, or ice-tea. When we wanted the waitress someone had to flag her down. She gave herself an 18% tip, but her service was extremely terrible and she did not comp us for the long wait or spilling water on my boss. I thought when restaurants knew they had a large group they would give you one of their better staff members, but not in this case. I don?t think I would ever go back nor would I recommend this place to anyone.

Positives: The view is amazing. The food is wonderful. Lounge will transfer your tab up to your table when the reservations are ready. AMAZING lobster bisque.

Negatives: Price and service. The lounge was not very professional and were confused on how to make my drink (Kettle One Vodka on the rocks) Tough one, I know. They charge for a glass of soda water, as if everything else we are ordering isn't enough. Our waiter started off strong and was very attentive. After our appetizers he began to drift...didn't clear our plates for some time, had to ask another waiter for drinks and water because we had not been checked on in so long. We were given our bill and still wanted another glass of wine but we were not asked, the bill was just dropped and he took off. Finally we were able to flag him down (after 7-8 minutes) and order our wine. He made it a point to hurry a new bill over to us and once he saw me place my car in the folder he was on it like a hawk. I HATE when you get poor service, but once they see you paying all of a sudden they find time to make it to your table!

Overall, NOT worth $100-$200 for dinner with poor service. If you get a good waiter though, it could be great.

I went to the chart house for my first anniversary, and found that the wait staff and view were superb. The food, however, was only good, not great. In particular, my husband and I both enjoyed the seared ahi appetizer and our entrees (I got the crab cakes which were served with a wonderful caper butter sauce). The salad, however, was only mediorce, and the hot lava cake was nothing special despite all the hype. Because of the chocolate in the middle, the whole cake deflated when we put our spoons in, and it was too rich without enough other flavors. If I wanted straight chocolate, I could get it for much cheaper elsewhere. If you're looking for a dessert that you have to wait to be made, I'd recommend the pizzookie at BJ's as a cost effective alternative.

My boyfriend and I have dined at quite a number of restaurants in the city and are always willing to try something new, but the Chart House is by far my favorite. I always suggest Chart House for a romantic dinner for the two of us. We've also had dinner parties here and the staff is very accommodating. Always make sure to have a reservation and a tip for the valet, as parking is extremely limited and you are pretty much forced to valet. The food is excellent and so is the service. And it doesn't hurt that they have our favorite wines on their list! Don't forget to order the Lava Cake (30 minutes prior) it's delicious!

I dined here over the holidays with my wife and parents who were visiting from out of town. The view was spectacular as always and the service and food were great. I wanted to comment on the lobster bisque because it was fantastic. It actually tasted like lobsters, had great consistency (no separation because of overheating) and it had many bite sized pieces of lobster. This is definitely a must have.

We have been going to Charthouse for several years. We also eat out at least 4 nights a week. I can honestly say this is the best restaurant in Oregon. They have been consistently good; have always given exceptional service, handled problems quickly and delightfully. They accomadated every request we had and followed thru flawlessly. This place has a strong drive to succeed. You can also see the kitchen so you know it is a place you can trust. I give them 100%! Even the valet service is the best in town...always taking care of the woman first, having your car ready when you come out. Everyone is polite, friendly and inviting! Now that is a restaurant! They should be very proud.

This place is one of my all-time favorite Portland establishments. It has changed over the years, but I had a great time this fourth of July with several friends and great view of all the city fireworks. We had appetizers, soups/salads, entrees, several non-alcoholic beverages, and a desert and the total came to $260. I thought it was very reasonable. The menu is extensive, from several fish choices to steak and chicken, even a few vegetarian options for our sole vegetarian guest. The service was great, very professional and warm. The valet is a nice touch, they always run to get your car and have a great attitude. I will most certainly be coming back.

The view is amazing, the food is great. It's spendy ($200 for a party of 4 with tip but w/o alcohol). We went there to have a special evening with some friends and could not have asked for a better time. We all had different choices from the fresh fish menu and no one was disappointed. The homemade potato chip appetizer was huge and very tasty.
The server was sharp, friendly and very good at making sure we understood what was on the menu and once we ordered had everything we wanted. We were a little late for our reservations and they got us seated within 20 minutes of getting there. I appreciate the selection and presentation.
We drove about a block past the place and parked in an open lot on the left. It saved us having to wait 10-15 minutes to get our car out of valet when we left. (There were a couple of large groups there that night and one of them had just broken up, creating a line to get their cars.)
I've been to several high end places before and few have stood up to this level of service and quality.
Get reservations, get there near sundown and you won't be disappointed.

Pros: view, food, menu variety, service, view, food ...

Cons: parking is tight

We went to the CHART HOUSE for a special occassion last week and THANKFUL we did. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we felt special. It was my friends birthday, which was proudly printed on the menu we received. We were advised when making the reservation that window seats were on a first come basis and the host would notify us at check-in if a window table was available or what the wait would be. We had 7PM reservations. We arrived to find it would be a 10-15 minute wait (It was just that).
The service was friendly, prompt and accommodating. The view was breath taking. Perched up on the hills of SW with a view of the Willamette River, Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens. We couldn't have painted a prettier scenery.
The restaurant was busy both upstairs and downstairs, so we anticipated maybe waiting for our food. But to the opposite. Each course was timed so we had time to savor the wonderful food but not feel rushed or waiting. The food was tasty and generous portions. Unlike the trendy small plate of food and lots of garnish restaurants. We concluded with a complimentary birthday dessert and the Chocolate Lava Cake to share for our table. This is a chocolate lover's dream.
The staff seemed to genuinely care about our experience. The manager stopped by to check on our experience, acknowledged my friends birthday using his name and thanked us for choosing the Chart House to celebrate the occassion. As noted above, the service was friendly, but not pretentious. Even the valet who parked our car asked about our dinner.
Whether going for a casual lunch, business dinner or special occassion, I'll choose the Chart House for the whole experience (Food, Service, View). Not to mention to avoid the road construction scattered throughout downtown Portland.
Keep up the great customer service CHART HOUSE!!

We dined at the Chart House on Thanksgiving day for a family celebration. The food arrived cold, the service was poor, we were served "scraps" of turkey and they ran out of mashed potatoes. I have frequently entertained business associates in the past at the Chart House and have been happy with the service and food. The service and food have seriously deteriorated since the last time we dined their. It is an expensive restaurant and used to be one of the finest in Portland. I would avoid it and select a restaurant that will be more reliable or you will be very disappointed. Portland has so many great restaurants to choose from you don't have to settle for mediocrity particularly in this price range. We won't be back!!!

Raves and rants...here we go! We passed the Chart House on the way to OHSU. It looked nice, we stopped. To our surprise it was a nice resturant and included valet parking and a wonderful view of Portland. We were invited to go downstairs for seating because they had a window seat. That was a mistake. The service was friendly...but slow. Twice I had to go to the bar to request something and was assured it was coming...but it didn't. When our server finally came we asked him...and he went and got it. We sat with empty glasses for 20 minutes and our bread was delivered to the table just minutes before our meal. That was frustrating. The menu is hard to understand because it doesn't list what is included with your meal (ie. salad, soup...etc.) So...you just order willy nilly and hope your bill isn't outragous. The food was great. Cooked perfectly and we really enjoyed the meal itself. The portions were small...but for once...I was a clean plate! This is unusual. The lava cake was great. We ordered two standard meal, two ice teas and dessert and our total was $80.00. This seemed some what high priced.

So I guess to wrap it up...if you have a hundred dollar bill and no end to time...this is the perfect spot. Don't go thinking you will pop in for a quick meal...and leave rubbing your full belly with a few spare bucks in your pocket. I do however recommend the Chart House...everybody should try everything at least one time :)

Pros: Great view & great food.

Cons: Poor service & expensive for portion.

The Charthouse has good seafood, but some dishes are better than others. Go for the wasabi ahi tuna (my boyfriend proclaimed that he would it to his "last meal"). It is divine! I had the snapper, which was cooked wellm juicy and tender, but the sauce over it was bland and did nothing for a fish which needs pep like snapper. They have a good by the glass wine menu, which is rare in a lot of restaurants. The bar downstairs has an equally gorgeous view, and a relaxed atmosphere. You can go to the Charthouse dressed up or casual and be welcomed equally. We have always had good service here and would return for a nice dinner out in a heartbeat.

This restaurant suffers from inconsistency in both food and service. We also had a concern with a waiter that deliberately over charged our table (large party) for items that were not ordered. We contacted the manager on duty and he reimbursed us over $50 for the over-charge. This same waiter is still employed there. We continue to 'try' the restaurant in hopes it will stabilize. The view is breath-taking!

We arrived on time for our reservation and were promptly seated at a corner table next to a window, the view was wonderful. The wait staff was attentive, prompt and helpful and gave us all the time we needed to mull over their extensive menu and wine list. We both had a delicious salad, seafood and wine by the glass. We probably should have passed on the cheesecake and coffee, but it was more than we expected too. I would highly recommend this resturant for special occasions or maybe a trip downstairs to the bar to enjoy a glass and the view. It is somewhat spendy, but we thought well worth it and had a wonderful time.

Well, after reading the posted reviews from 2002 and forward I was skeptical however after dinning I was reminded that people tend to complain more than compliment. The view is amazing near sunset and the service was excellent. The general "lines" used to entise guest sounded rehearsed however the staff were personable and appeared to enjoy working there. The food was exceptional and my husband a steak man was impressed with the cut of primerib he was served given we were eating at a seafood restaruant. There is something for everyone including a kids menu and and extensive wine menu ranging from $20 to over $200. It's unfortunate that this restaruant has gotten such poor reviews, I will return for dinner and special occasions.

Returned after 14 years only to find no "aloha spirit", but the name was still Chart House? The staff was dressed in generic black and white. (blah atmosphere) Food was very spendy. On top of that, sides ala carte?? This adds quite a bit to the bill. No "Surf 'n Turf"? Seems the menu has gotten trendy. Hospitality was poor. We were never greeted by a manager like the old days. Will find a new favorite spot now that we're back in Portland.

Riding on its reputation, the Chart House does what a lot of old Portland restaurants do: jack-up the prices, save money by providing institutional-type food, hire inexperienced wait staff, overprice for drinks, and hope everyone is dazzled by the view and just glad to be at an old "Portland Institution." Give me a break. This place is Newport Bay with a view. $26 for six shrimp and some angel hair pasta? A server that just about took out the window with the champagne cork? It's a nice atmosphere and all, but it takes more than a good view and parking all the nice cars by the door to make a good restaurant.

I don't eat here ofter, but when I do, I'm kind of impressed. What bothers me about places like this is, how can a restaurant with a "Million Dollar View", offer only $6 to $20 meals, that should be $4 to $10 meals. I don't want to price myself out of the market, but the food here should be, $8 to $100, not counting wine, and be worth it. The cooks here should all be fired, and then hire a real professional "Chef", and "Sous Chef", and very good help. This place could be great. The best. Not.

This restaurant minus the view is just another mediocre sea food joint. As a matter of fact, I can think of several other sea food places I can recommend at a fairer price. The grilled halibut steak was too dry and the steamed vegetables seemed like they were from a can--mush and flavorless. The service was ok but nothing to write home about.

I brought my husband here for a romantic dinner and was embarassed when they brought him the ugliest cut of prime rib I'ver ever seen, it was also a little cooler than room tempaerature. I ordered a side of garlic mashed potatoes in addition to the portion that came with my herb crusted halibut. The side of potatoes was piping hot but the portion that came with my meal was cold and lumpy. Not worth the $$$.

I can't believe the Chart House was even nominated for "Best Service", let alone got any votes. The food is pretty average, nothing really stood out. Basically paying for the great view of Portland, but you will get to enjoy it since they are in no hurry to serve you.

A party of 7, early in the evening. Beat the crowd. The ambiance, of course, excellent. Service couldn't have been better. The food? Absolutely awesome! Parking is a bit of a shock, if you've never been there before, but the valet had my car back to me before I had even given him the receipt!
I cannot wait to go back!

Sadly I can only afford to go to the Chart House, once in a blue moon, but I LOVE it when I get there! The view is amazing, especially in the fall! The food is good, but everything is ala carte, which being cheap, I don't like. :) I thought my husband should have gotten a side with his $45 lobster tail! It is expensive--our bill is usually $150 for 2 people. The atmosphere is romantic and very nice. Excellent service. My overall favorite restaurant in Portland, more for the view and atmosphere than anything else.

I dined at the chart house for my first anniversary this week. i was afraid of the mandatory valet, but if you go late it is optional. I had the coconut shrimp. usually I am hesistant about ordering $21 shrimp because it usually leaves me unsatisfied. Not the case. everything was delicious and filling. From the chowder, to the bread to the beautifully prepared entrees. and the lucious Mud Pie. Definitely a special place for that special occasion. Very friendly service

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Portland. The service is always beyond compare and the food is superb! However, I got really smart this year and took my husband here on 7/4 to watch all of greater Portland light up during the fireworks. There is no place else in town that gives a view like this! It is the best, and we'll make this a tradition for every fireworks display.
