This place has a nice comfortable environment and I love that you can get your own coffee whenever you wish. People are nice and the food is awesome. You shouldn't leave here without trying one of their Bloody Mary's. Delicious!

The only reason I'm glad I threw up is because the food was horrible.

I read in the Portland Monthly's best breakfast issue that J&M's was rated for one the top Eggs Benedict in Portland. My fiance and I have been trying to find a place to eat delicious Eggs Benedict after Chef Tucker's closed.

J&M's was terribly disappointing. The eggs were steamed not poached, which makes the rubbery, and the sauce was thin. I try really hard not to waste food but I could only manage to eat half of my meal. Two Eggs Benedict, tea, and a small apple cider cost $26.95. Then at the end, they charge you two dollars to pay your bill if you use your debit card. Wtf.

The J&M Cafe is a nice place to have breakfast and they have good coffee. However, it is over priced, and instead of taking credit cards for the benefit of their customers, they gouge you at the end if you forget to bring cash by charging a $2.00 ATM fee (not including your bank's fee). I asked if they would ever think of simply taking cards, and the reply was "it helps us keep our overhead low by not paying the 3% for the credit card transaction, we feel it is working well" Of course it helps you keep your overhead low, but your customers want convenience on top of the overpriced food. At an average of $10 a breakfast, I would think that would be important to you. Stingy. . . . very stingy.

I've been eating at J&M's for about 10 years now. They always come through. It's my favorite place to meet and talk with friends and have a healthy breakfast. Friendly, open, I just wish they opened earlier.

J&M has a short menu, and a simple atmosphere but don't mistake simplicity with a lack of effort. Every item on the menu is delicious and the decor is very appealing. As per Portland's tradition you get your own coffee and water, but this time your water glass is actually a mason jar. You will eat well, and yes, there will be garlic, but we think garlic is fantastic. You can eat breakfast and stave off heart disease at the same time! How fantastic is that?

Pros: The food and the atmosphere.

Cons: The bathroom is down the hall and one of us got temporarily locked out of the restaurant...

the menu looks great, except for an overabundance of garlic in every savory item. they were kind enough to omit the garlic from my scramble, but it was instead smothered in parmesan cheese shavings which were entirely too salty and left no opportunity for me to taste the eggs. the waitress was accomodating, but failed to mention that the potatoes are covered in garlic too! it left me with a stomachache, and i only ate half of it. also, i ordered a single shot latte and got a double - some communication breakdown between the waitress and espresso bar. the only thing that was pleasing was the fresh-squeezed OJ. and i may go back for the cornmeal waffle.

Pros: fresh squeezed OJ

Cons: heavy on the spices. non-organic eggs

Small with a warm atmosphere to this cafe. Portions were small, but good. Menu has a wide variety. coffee was definitely good. Serve your own coffee at this place as you walk in. They don't accept credit cards here, though. That's definitely a drag in the 21st century.

I really like the feel of the place and the food is really good. Simple menu but everything we have tried is great. The service is not super friendly, but it's fairly quick. Worth going to for sure.

We've been here twice and both times it's been great. I love the space. It's not over done, it's open and comfortable. The menu is a little 'adult' for breakfast... Both times I've been there my taste buds haven't been ready for the complex flavors many of their breakfast items have. They do have basic eggs and toast, but many of their scrambles are pretty heavy on garlic or even mustard. The lox plate is fabulous and affordable ($7). The waffles are also great. This is a low key place to have breakfast with friends/family and not be stuck fighting for a table, sitting on your neighbors lap, or eating super greasy diner food.

I have been a long time fan of J&M but the last couple breakfasts have been a bit lackluster. The eggs were overdone just a touch, the potatoes flavorless, the toast super-dry. The coffee and service remain excellent. I just hope they're not resting on their laurels and just are having some temporary issues. Come on J&M, refocus on the food... We love you.

Pros: Great Food, Low Prices, Friendly Service

Cons: Not great ambiance

In the becoming too hip Central Eastside, J&M is an outstanding breakfast joint, with easy parking...because there's nothing else around. The selections were original (not always easy for breakfast) and the ambiance is overly pleasant. Even met up people we knew friends and split a table, for gosh sakes!

This place is pleasing to both the palate and the wallet. Great breakfast spot that is packed on weekends...go during the week and you'll be able to find a seat easily. It's a best kept secret for lunch with daily specials and soups that are always interesting and good. Sometimes their specials lean toward the spicey side however...soups tend to be heavy on the pepper and garlic. At dinner the place is transformed to a bistro setting and the food menu is small but good. Wonderful best kept secret for lunch and dinner!

I was lucky to be one of their first dinner customers. This place is going to be popular. The food is great (I had the stewed rabbit sausage and warm pound cake), the wine list is full of wonderful choices and the atmoshere is gently romantic. Why are all the affordable restaurants in southeast pdx? This neighborhood, especially, has been waiting for a casual, good joint ever since caswell went to pot.

Salty, Sweet, Fluffy, Bold, or Traditional J&M does it and makes breakfast look easy. You may never know it, but the chance of being served by one of the owners is high. This is a place that you don't even have to shower to go to, but get treated with charm. I cannot say enough good things about the service, the unique breakfast menu (and always check out those specials!), and the laid back atmosphere that has a European feel. We have been to the other "trendy" breakfast joints in Portland, but none compare the great breakfast of J&M.

Getting my own coffee and water is a ritual at J&M. I'm always curious about the breakfast specials, because there's always an ingredient that surprises me. Food is wonderfully delicious, the cafe has a neighborhood feel, and the wood floors impress me. It's a warm, cozy place with fantastic food. You can't go just once...you must return and return!

Tucked away in a somewhat up and coming SE area devoid of much character, J & M Cafe shines. Hands down the best breakfast spot in town with fast, friendly service; great atmosphere (airy with lots of natural light); and fabulous, fresh food--the Mediterranean Scramble is wonderful. Self-serve coffee and water is a plus. Get there early or plan to wait a bit. Well worth the wait, though.

J&M has been a favorite since moving to Portland. Yes, the self-serve coffee is great, but the food is incredible. It's a step up from basic breakfast entrees but not too frou-frou fancy. I love the J&M plate especially! Service has always been top notch, even though they are slammed on weekend mornings. The gentleman with the goatee is always super nice and not in a fakey way.

Delicious breakfasts. Love everything I've tried. Casual and straight-forward atmosphere. I like the coffee self-service since there's nothing worse than waiting for a coffee refill or drinking cold coffee. The J&M Plate is my favorite.

I've lived in Los Angeles for 2 years now, but every time I return to Portland I make a point of eating breakfast at J&M. Order the breakfast burrito, the Mediterranean scramble, or the waffle. They are all the best I've ever had.

I miss J&M terribly.
