I went there a couple of years ago for Karaoke from Hell which was a super blast! Until my friend couldn't find her purse then this bouncer followed her around and finally scooped her up (and she's tiny) so I just said Hey! be careful with her, next thing I know I'm grabbed from behind. I get out of that hold and he's pissed! so he grabs my neck, next thing I know, I'm pushed out the door and onto the ground and kicked in the head, he kicked my purse across the ground and lost my cell phone for a whole month. They sent the cops away when I was looking for the phone. The owner never called me back, I have police photos and everything. I am a peaceful person! Watch out for these freaks! I only had two beers so was not drunk. At least I got a hold of one of their nut sacks. Oh, to add insult to injury, the hipsters standing by wouldn't let me use their phone to call for help! Gee thanks. Doesn't surprise me that they are racist too!

These men totally manhandled my friend for no reason! All I did was say hey careful with her, she was petite so the huge bouncer grabbed me from behind, once I got out of that hold and just wanted to leave, wasn't trying to attack anyone,

Wonderful staff, everyone is always welcoming and very appreciative that you are there. Some of the best bands from all over play here with a very personable feel! You can stand and enjoy the entertainment or mosey on over to the other

I work here and the whole staff tries very hard to make everyone happy (unfortunately it never works out that way when there is liquor involved). The two previous reviews are way out of line from two girls that were very, very dunk, and treated with the utmost respect possible. We invite everyone to contact management with any complaints either at our website at danteslive.c*m or by telephone at 503-226-6630. We try to resolve every issue.

I don't know how these things can possibly still happen in 2010, especially in a fairly well-known establishment in a city like Portland, but I am flabbergasted at the BLATANT racism of Dante's staff, which I witnessed last night. My Cuban [is this even necessary to point out? apparently!] friend and I [white girl]--two rather sophisticated women in our early 30s-- went for a celebratory cocktail last night at this place. We were patient and cheerful even as we were being stared down by the bartender yet still not served, as she seemed to purposely serve each new customer that approached. My friend tried to catch her eye a few times, and next thing we know, we're being asked to leave. (NO, we were not intoxicated; NO we were not being rude or disruptive or anything but pleasant, since we were both in the best of moods; NO we don't know any of dante's staff members or have a history with this place or anything--seriously, there was NO reasonable explanation for what took place.) As we tried to inquire with the bartender why we were asked to leave, the bouncer became aggressive in getting us out the door. And as I was trying to ask another staff member for an explanation, my friend suddenly became upset, and told me the bouncer made a racial slur, which, yes, I suppose could be taken as vulgar slang but.... WHAT THE HELL??? this was the strangest--and WORST--experience I have ever had at a bar in Portland. I am not flimsy with the word racist, as it is a pretty serious accusation (at least to most of us with half a brain), but... I was overwhelmed with the racism that I saw. This was so unbelievable that I am still having trouble keeping my jaw off of the ground as this experience replays in my mind. I guess in a place like this diversity is found only in facial piercings and skin color only varies with tattoo ink. Needless to say I will never go back to this place and I will definitely tell everyone I know about this experience.

I went to this horrible establishment for the last time last night. As I sat there with my friend having a good time, I apparently pissed the female bartender off so bad by looking at her, that she felt intimidated (because I am a slight shade of brown) and had the bouncers kick me out. Having worked in the service industry for an extremely long time, I would understand if I was sitting there yelling profanities at her, but noooo, this was not the case, I was looking at her (hell, who knows, I could have been stunned by her beauty for all she knows, but of course, there was no beauty to be stunned at). She then decided that I theoretically called her a name and this is why I was being kicked out. As I am being kicked out the bouncer calls me a "bitch ass ni**er" as a parting comment. Pretty awesome to have lived here all my life and be treated that way. Dantes is not worth one single dime or breath. What a waste.

It use the be a teen gay night club back in the 80's, but had changed hands a few times since then. We've not been here in several years, but we had gone there numerous times for special fetish events and concerts. For a concrete Blond concert we were made to wait a couple hours in the crowded dining room standing before the band came out and was wiped out before they even began. It is used a lot for their willingness to host the most eclectic events, but not as much for their great service.

So usually I leave great reviews of places but I can't do that here. The venue is very popular and maybe that is the problem. It is always to crowded, terrible service and in the summer bad ventilation

STEVIE is an absolute #&@%!!!! i will NEVER return to this venue as long as he is working there. he is arrogant, judgmental, and full of more sexual harassment than even he knows what to do with. i have never felt more uncomfortable somewhere in my life.

Wow I went there tonight for the Sunday Sinferno Show. My money was well spent the show was amazing and the staff was great. I even had the amazing chance to meet the owner of the club Frank, it is not often that the owner of a place will converse with his customers. Needless to say Frank was very nice and left me with a warm welcome feeling with dantes.

I have never been a fan of this place. However, when we went to see a show here the other night and paid $30 we thought we were in for a good time. After watching some opening acts for a couple hours and realizing it was 1am, I asked the door girl when the headliners were going on. To my surprise, they had canceled. There was no notification of this at all! I asked about getting my money back and was told to call the manager the next day. I did this, and what a surprise, didn't get my money back. It would have at least been nice if they put a sign on the door or told me when I walked in that the headliner I had paid to see wasn't going to be there. Oh well. Common courtesy is lost on most.

My husband and I stayed in Portland recently and picked Dante's for their Saturday Night show - Subterranean Caberet. There was a Seattle group playing, and we found both the music and show to be very entertaining! It was my birthday and we were so lucky to wander in! The musicians, dancers, MC, and crowd were all upbeat and the atmosphere was friendly and in party mode. There was a very diverse crowd - all ages and style of dress from jeans and sweaters to short black dresses and heels. No baseball caps. Two drinks were 11.75 plus tip - pretty typical.
I have two cons that I want to share with readers. The first is that the service at the large bar was horrible. I thought my husband was exaggerating about her rudeness, so I attempted to order the next round with no luck. She wasn't busy, just leaning and chatting. Order from the small bar!
Second, we decided to stay for the second show and all patrons staying were told to leave their coats at the tables (or lose your table) and line up OUTSIDE to pay again!!! I wasn't so much put off by having to pay $6 for the second show, but I was freezing without my coat! I have never seen a business do that. A good way to have customers change their minds about staying...

The best drinks and hangover food ever. I love the big open cieling. I have never been disapointed with the sound system. I have also been by there for lunch. Even though it's a nightclub it still feels cozy.

The performances on Sunday night are great. The stage host/MC guy is hilarious - reminds me of the guy from The Soup on E!. Beers are cheap, pizza is decent. Because Sunday nights are stage performance oriented, it is a good night/place to go solo vs most other bars. As you go in, go to the small bar to the right. NOT the large bar to the left. I have never had such horrible service at a bar throughout the evening, on two separate nights. The airhead just kind of loiters around while you stand, elbow up to the bar, holding your money. Never seen anything like it at a bar. People next to me said 'good luck buddy' to my attempts at getting a beer lol. I guess if you die your hair black, get tons of tattoos, and have a bad attitude you are not expected to do your job. At one point she was chatting away with someone at the end of the bar while at least a dozen people were waiting for drinks. I always overtip, but I had to dig up a quarter for her fantastic efforts.

I have enjoyed many good bands at this bar, "Karaoke from hell" is fun too. Drinks were okay, the pizza really sucked! I will still go there again next time band I like plays there. Eat somewhere else first before you go. Also be sure to bring some earplugs, their soundguy is deaf as a post.

Dante's was a cool place to see some live music. I even came back and performed at the open mic and met a lot of great local comics. I read someone's review below that said the bartenders were rude...that's probably because they were acting like a retard. The staff that I met were some of the coolest and friendliest people I met in three weeks out on the west coast. To each his own, I guess. Anyway, if you are in the area, love local music and being in a cool place and meeting new people, then check out Dante's...if you are an uppity person who feels you are better than people, fall down a mine shaft.

Awesome Pizza, on the cheap. Live music ranges from absolutely amazing to what the heck are they thinking (Steven Segal Blue Band, for instance). Eclectic, diverse crowds who have lots of fun. Only negatives might be the homeless spare changing in/around the club and sometimes (every weekend perhaps) the place is packed.

Highly Reccomended!

Typical Portland nightspot with obligatary hipster ghouls blindly floating in the hope of bumping into a scene to call their own before they tattoo its name beneath their sleeves. Adequately disaffected staff give the suburbanites a real "in the cool" experience. Pricing is comparable to elsewhere in the neighborhood, but filling up at outside sources could be a better bargain. Music is what shines here with a pleasantly entertaining array of both local and touring up-and-comers, as well as some impressive dinosaur bones gracing the stage from time to time. Cover charge is often under $10 which should appeal to all except maybe the whiny Too-Cools whose presence alone warrants a free ride or spanging Gutterpunks looking to blow their soap and deodorant budget. Still, if you want to finish your downtown pub crawl with an intimate viewing of your latest musical discovery Dante's is definitely a lovely last stop...

Fun place to go with friends but not meant for singles looking to meet. Bartenders are friendly enough but floor and door staff are impersonal and dry. Crowds make the space very confining and the ventilation needs help. I like the "gritty" atmosphere and love the line-up of bands and entertainment. I save the drinking for other near-by bars because the drinks are weak and watery.

Yeah, there isn't too much to say about this place. The drinks are about the same price as most other bars, but it was fun to see a band live (My Regrets) because I knew one of the guitarists (Chance). The stage is rather small and a $6 cover seemed a bit unreasonable, but the service was actually pretty good.

This place sucks. The drinks are watered down, the staff is paranoid about serving a real drink I suppose. The wait staff is composed of neaderthal etiquette-challenged idiots. Monday nights are good, only because you can karaoke with a live band, who are the only nice people that are involved with entertainment here. Sinferno is the biggest waste of time. Go there once, but don't bother returning. It's exactly the same. Fire dancing gets old, as do strippers that don't strip. Sinferno's emcee will encourage debauchery and hooking-up, but most people here are too immersed in their own misery to bother with it. Try the Devil's Point instead, which is Dante's on a smaller scale.

We went to see a show scheduled for 9pm on a weeknight. The opener didn't start until 10:15. We were given the run-around on door time vs. band time by "Stevie", the production manager. The headliners weren't going to take the stage until 11:30. Call ahead to clarify show times, but be wary of times that they give you. Patience is required.

It's crowded, hot, and stale. They could use some air handling. The food coming out of the kitchen doesn't look so good. At least the beer is cheap.

Pros: they have beer

Cons: the beer is warm, hot, stale, crowded, shows start late

Why is Dante's now better than Escape From New York. Well, for starters, where do you think they got the recipe? But on top of that, it's MUCH MUCH easier to find parking, just park your car next to the hydrant for a minute if you have to. And believe me, 60 seconds on average is all it takes to get a slice. Dante's also happens to be the only place in town where you can order right there on the street. Take it from someone who actually lived in NYC for 2+ years ... Dante's is authentic pizza pie.

Dantes Inferno is a good bar with great potential, but I have never recieved good service. I tip well, but I am continually ignored by the "cooler than thou" staff. Just because I don't dress like a hipster doesn't make me any less of a customer. At least I have a unique style, just like this place. Please get better bar staff (main bar).

I personally think they are doing a great job at Dante's. Don't know what's up with all the haters out there. In the last 30 days they've had great shows with Bo Didley and Bigstar, and they have some great shows coming up. The sound is good. The staff is pleasant (there have been some firings I think). The pizza great and the room is unequaled among clubs in Portland. Could use a little work, but overall nearly always a good or even great experience.

Pros: atmosphere, live music, pizza

Cons: crowded, need vip pass, more bathrooms

This pizza is the best after you've already hit all the bars. Perfect location.

How about a real place to see a live band. I'd go to the Crystal Ballroom, Roseland, or B Complex any day over Dante's. You can't have a decent concert at a Bar like this.

Have any of these voters been to places like The Buffalo Gap or Ohm? Personally, I don't enjoy witnessing daily fights in or outside the bars I frequent, and the music quality is oftentimes deplorable.

Geesh !? Stop pluggin your own Bar for Gods sake ! I see allot of 10s for a place I live 5 blocks from. Improve your service and Customer relations and dont change the shows. Frankly there is NOTHING in Portland that deservs a 10 but a few close 9.5s. A 10 for me is a couple o little places I found in Peurto Rico up in the mountains or in NY, NY - they took 4 years to find :)

"I don't think that alligator liked that nightclub." I swear that was the first thing my friend said to me after a totally debauched Sunday night at Dante's. I had expected "What in the hell are you doing in my bed?" to come out of her mouth. Sundays at Dante's are a must. Fire shows, some guy letting me hold a Cayman (alligator-looking thing), all in all everything you could want to end your weekend and make you late for work Monday morning. Wish they'd let me back in.

I've been there twice. One on Karaoke From Hell night which was awesome except for the drinks were expensive and the bartender/waitress was rude. She ignored us forever so we went up the bar and ordered. In the middle of an order she would turn around and help someone else and screw up your order.

Next time, it was free pizza and dollar beers which was great. Fun time except for the same bartender/waitresses was rude to many people.

It would be an improvement if she had an attitude adjustment or they would get another bartender.

I always feel comfortable everytime I have visited Dante's. It could be the cozy fire, the ample seating, or all the red.... dunno what it is... but I like it!

I saw the review of the guy who was upset that they don't allow baseball capped Frat boys in Dante's. Personally, I think that's great. Society at large is dominated by Frat boy/Sorority girl culture. There are many people out there who seek to escape that scene. Places like Dante's is one such destination to do so.

At Dante's you'll find all sorts of characters, from drag queens, to people dressed formally, slutty, gaudy, outrageously, you name it. What you wont find are frat boys, and thank god for that.

The bar itself is overflowing with ambience. The acts are entertaining (I've only been on Sundays), and the crowd is fun to look at. It's also home to some of the best electronica music in Portland.

I have only been to Dante's a handful of times, but it has always been way chill. The atmosphere is dark and firey, just the way a live music venue should be. Word to the wise, Tuesday night comedy is not all it's cracked up to be!

I have been going to dante's ever since it opened. It is a great live music venue, and they have a great bar and attentive/friendly staff, and cool atmosphere (or used to). However, last week I was surprised to learn they now have a DRESS CODE! I was told at the door that I had to remove my "baseball cap" inside. I took it off as requested, but was blown away that others were allowed to wear cowboy hats, knit caps, bandana's, etc., but the few people wearing baseball caps were harassed to keep them off or they would be asked to leave. Why? They had problems with "Frat Boys" with baseball caps. Hey that's a great idea, lets discriminate against people wearing certain types of clothing! What's next, race, sex, weight? Ok, maybe that's a little overboard, but give me a break! If you go, watch what you wear!
