EM has a wide selection of CDs and vinyl, and good used deals on both. The electronic section is lacking, but jazz, world music, and rock/pop have lots to choose from. The staff is helpful if solicited but not overly friendly (but what record store employees really are?). New vinyl is expensive but listening stations are conducive to hands-on browsing. There are sometimes great finds in used DVDs too (films and TV series) and the "Just Arrived" sections for CDs and DVDs cause random finds you otherwise might not be searching for.

Pros: Wide selection

New and used music stores seem to be going the way of the 8-track tape. We've lost Ozone three times now (the original, Ozone UK, and O3), Turn Around Sound, Django's, Tower, and now Music Millennium West. Now could not be a better time to praise a mainstay, Everyday Music. In the ten years I've shopped at EM, I've seen staff come and go. For the most part, they are knowledgeable about music across the board. I once witnessed a customer hum a song to the clerk, who in turn called the Sandy store and hummed it to the clerk on the other end, trying to figure out what that song was until another customer chimed in with the answer. That moment alone breaks down the rather impersonal warehouse-like vibe. EM hits it for being open late everyday. Although vast, the selection ebbs and flows depending on the used cd selection, and if you come up empty one day, two days later you may have found everything you wanted and more. Take a careful look; I often find the CD I came for not on the racks, but below in the overstock. The wall of used DVD's rotates as do the used CD's so check back often. EM also carries new and used vinyl, and the time I found the Repo Man soundtrack on cassette for a buck fifty made my night. With Music Millennium West about to be history, the always anticipated in-store goes with it. It'd be nice if EM made some space for touring bands to put on a short set. With the Crystal Ballroom just across the street, you know bands are stopping in anyhow to grab a couple of new tunes for the tour bus. EM is a recommended trip for all types of music, and time for browsing (and listening) is mandatory.

Pros: Vast rotating selection of CD's, low-priced "Skufs," sell used CD's, DVD's and Vinyl. Always check the promo bins at the counter!

Cons: None, really. Maybe parking, but I live close enough to walk, so nya nya...

Everyday Music looks a lot better from the outside. This may be the store for you if you're looking for a huge Bob Marley poster for your dorm room, but for everyone else, it's not really that special. They don't pay alot of money when you trade in your music, in fact, it's really insulting. They claim to buy anything, but they pay a pittance for many titles that you know they are going to resell for a lot more. It seems that their store caters to people under 25, or people over 45. There just isn't a decent selection of rare music, and their dvd section is not that impressive.

Everyday Music has a few different locations (and some may argue which is best) but this is the location most central to the downtown area shopping district.

New & Used CDs, Tapes + Vinyl (with listening stations to sample before you buy). For vinyl - check out the "50 cent bin" for some cheap deals (if you don't mind wading through a bunch of barbra streisand) and for CDs- check out the "skuff" section for extreme discounts on slightly skuffed-up CDs.

A Portland Favorite!

Located on the southern edge of the Pearl District, this music and video store is open every day of the year for long hours. They carry new and used records, CD's, cassettes, VHS videos, DVD's -- heck, even 8-tracks. Overall, it's one of the best selections in the area, and they will buy your used items as well.

my music heaven is at this store! you can find just about any kind of music you are looking for at half the price of other music stores. I even shop there for records sometimes when I'm feeling old fashioned. Besides CD's you can purchase movies and cassettes, although these are somewhat limited. When you walk in, it's not like a mass chain of stores with people in uniform, but rather contains the perfect ambiance for rock heads!

PROS: all different kinds of music from popular to foreign
CONS: have to leave your bags at the door

They have a wide variety of music titles at a wide variety of prices. There are so many choices to be made here. If you are a music lover, than this is your candystore. I like the choice of used or new CD'S. You can listen to your used cds before you buy them to make sure they work, on scratched, and don't skip. Make sure you take advantage of this because some of their older cds have some scratches, usually not too much of a problem. And they are cheap!

Everyday Music has a ton of music, in just about every format ever created. They sell a lot of non-mainstream stuff, but it's always possible to get whatever's on the Billboard Top-whatever chart, too. They'll buy back your old music, but don't pay too much for it (think $2 per CD, tops). Since they're a local, independent store, they don't have prices to compete with Target, etc., but it's still worth checking out. Lots of music-obsessed salesfolk here.

PROS:
CONS: Pay almost nothing for your used music, then sell it for a lot more.

Everyday Music buys and sells used CDs and records by the ton. Hard up for rent money? Gotta have that new Bianchi frame? Sell your soul--er, music collection--to Everyday Music. They'll give you cash, which you can go out and spend on your vice of choice.

They also have a dozen or so listening stations loaded up with recently released albums--though like listening stations the world around, those headphones just are not comfortable.

PROS: Good used selection, purchases "any and all music CDs"
CONS: Quality of music sacrificed for quantity

I know, if I'm looking for pretty much anything, the end of the line is always going to be Everyday music. And, to make matters ever better, there's times where it comes through with used cds too. The real place where Everyday excels is for the browser. I can look through the current bins anytime and come away with a handful of titles worth buying. Sometimes, I can spend hours on end browsing. The inclusion of a seperate Jazz and Classical store (for the Burlingame location) is excellent.
Finally, the ability to take ANY cd off the shelfs and bring it to the front for a pre-purchase listen is crucial. How other stores don't do this, I'll never understands. I can even listen to one of the many LP titles which reside in the back. Everyday is the complete music store.

This place is huge and has the biggest selection I have ever seen! The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. Selling and buying used CD's is a breeze. Definitely a good place to go for those hard-to-find buys.

If it can be had in Portland, EM has it! I'm a lot more selective in my music purchases these days, which translates to "obscure and picky." Only on a few occasions have I not found the artist/album I'm looking for, and then I had to track it down via the web. They have regular rotation of their selections (which they keep up to date), but most importantly their staff loves music. Your not going to find the wage-slave bop-do glam rocker behind the counter who thinks that punk rock began with Green Day. These are people who know better than you what you're listening to.

Better selection than most, both new and used, including world music and other less popular genres. And you can try anything before purchasing. Still, if it can be found at Best Buy, Fred Meyers, or Target, get it there because you will pay more at Everyday Music. But it's a great place to browse and no megastore will beat the price of used CDs.

Ya like music and ya like to find it cheap? This is a good place to be. Whenever I need to find cheap and/or out-of-date tunes, this is the store I go to. The employees are friendly and knowledgeable about music if you have any questions. With two monstrous locations in Portland and treasures hiding everywhere, any music lover could get lost.

Cons: Mainstream imports, No parking

Such a cool store. You could spend hours in here digging through the used cd's, you never know what your going to find. I hardly ever buy new anymore, chances are you can find whatever you are looking for at EM, with a little work. They have a great selection, and multiple locations, all of which are stocked with mass quantities of cd's, records, and tapes.

Everyday is one of the largest independent record stores I've seen. They stock a nice selection of new and used CDs, imports and the all-important vinyl. They also offer an interesting selection of posters as well. The staff is knowledgeable and kind. They also deserve praise for being one of the few record stores to offer a public restroom (a must for anyone who is serious about shopping for records). With that said, please keep the restroom clean and treat it kindly.
