This is a follow up to my initial review. Please read that and realize I have filed a BBB complaint asking for a refund. I was told they do not give refunds, but read the email I received from the owner and you will see that is not true.

I haven't even been able to go to use the gift package I received as their customer service is horrible. My daughter bought a package for me for Christmas. I never received a gift card or email though she bought it on the phone and specifically asked for a gift message to be sent to me. The whole surprise was ruined, and after numerous calls from my daughter, they finally stated a "staff person" made an email error. Jan. 28, 2012 I finally received an email regarding my holiday gift and by then the surprise had been ruined and my daughter quite discouraged. I then attempted to contact them and only got their voice mail, left messages, no call back. Finally I got a message from them, late night, answering a few questions I had. I then tried to make an appointment, again with the endless messages and no call backs. Today I tried again, finally got a person to talk with and tried to make an appointment. I was told they are booked out to "summer." Okay, that's a good date. I am trying to book for my daughter and I, which our schedules are difficult to get together, and they want me to book sometime late in August though if I cancel it will be Christmas before we can get another appointment. I also was told they do not do the services that are advertised on their website that I wanted, yet as of today they are still on the website. False advertising. I am so fed up with this I want my daughter to get a refund. They state they don't give refunds, despite that not being on their website at all. Perhaps it would be a great experience if I went in, but I will never get in, and am so done with dealing with their terrible customer service. Be warned, it's a mess, despite their nice website and promising appearance. Read other reviews, I am not the only one who has had a bad experience with their lack of customer support.

I read some of the reviews before I went into this spa and was a bit nervous. It was pre-booked based on a best friends recommendation, so I went in. To my surprise, It was exquisitely wonderful, it was like i had just stepped into my heart and out of my busy career. Thank you very much and hope to find time to return

I travel for business year round and have been to over one hundred spas around the globe,,,,,and some of them have been next to mind blowing. Aequis Spa falls into that spot,,,,I was taken so far away from any day to day thoughts and freed from the stress. I will continue to book with Aequis Spa and its wonderful staff when i know im headed to portland. I cant understand where any one bad review could come from, WOW, some of us just don't get it and seem to never relax. THANK YOU AEQUIS SPA!!!!! See you next time im in town.

It seems that Ms Klein has taken herself off as listed owner, and now her ex husband, David Klein of California claims to be part owner. It's on his Facebook page. There is also a page called AEQUIS SPA REALLY SHOULD PAY THEIR EMPLOYEES on Facebook. I personally will never do business there again.

I guess the pressure to get legit or die was too much. The place is finally licensed. It took lots of calls to the State! I did find that the BBB has given the place an F rating and there are HUGE outstanding BOLI claims and liens for payroll violations. A simple credit check will prove them out.

If one believes in karma, (interesting that the business promotes spiritual well-being), then they have a big kick in the butt coming (or at least their next life as a dung beetle). I, for one, will never darken their door again. SK

I came in during a $110 day and got such a great massage. Krista gave me a foot massage and right away, I started joking around with her and felt very comfortable and relaxed. She's awesome and she let me be myself. It was my first massage so I didn't know that traditionally you get butt naked under the bath robe. Funny. Real funny.

The massage got started and an hour and a half later I was entranced by the tribal music and the deep tissue massage I received. She was formerly an all-state volleyball player in high school and her bows rolled through my kinks and knots in my back that I get from clicking a mouse and watching a computer screen all day. Goodness guys, get Krista if you want a good massage. Goodness I said.

I really, really do. From the friendly front desk staff to the knowledgeable and intuitive therapists. I continue to come back. Reading other reviews on here has made me a bit sad as I think many small businesses are being hit hard with the tumultuous economy and we need to hang tough with our Portland gems. And Aequis truly is a gem. The intention is amazing and you feel cared for throughout your entire experience.

I LOVE the aroma part at the beginning, the foot treatment to relax before the ACTUAL massage even gets started, and I have ALWAYS been happy with the massage or skin care service.

I have had my share of spa experiences, and while good - I have not found one that beats the fantastic service and retreat I found at Aequis.

Be specific about your service and what you are paying for. Keep an eye on the clock you may not receive to full amount of time you paid for. Forget about talking to the owner Megan Klein she already has your money and will not call you back if you have issued a complaint. Try the YMCA the service is probably better!

I worked at Aequis spa last year, and the owner Megan Klein seemed on the up and up, until it came time for payroll. Myself and several other employees were shafted out of wages we worked very hard for.
I was very patient and gave owner Megan Klein months to pay me, and it was always one excuse after another. Eventually I filed a claim with the Bureau of Labor and Industry. They agreed I was owed the money and a sheriff from the city served owner Megan Klein with an order of determination stating the amount that was owed to me, and several other employees who were never paid.
Owner Megan Klein refused to acknowledge the paperwork from the state, and now a lien has been placed against her, the business and any property she owns.
If you want to go to Aequis feel free.
I just thought you should know the kind of business owner Megan Klein truly runs.

I have been planning a trip to Portland and after reading the rave reviews below selected Aequis as a spa to visit during my stay. I should have read more reviews! The website is very nice, but they advertise "daily specials" and there are none! The site ssys to " check in here first thing every morning and be the first to call" I have been checking continuously for a week and NOTHING. I was really psyched about going to this place, but I feel uncomfortable dealing with a business that doesn't follow through. They might want to crop down that home page photo too. The smaller (cropped) version at the top is much more flattering.

This is a spa! We were greeted warmly and in a timely manner. It was so fun to select our aromatherapy oils for our massage. Our massage therapists, Krista and Katrina, were friendly and professional, and the atmosphere was so relaxing. There was a bit of outside noise, but it was only for a moment and did not affect my experience. We are coming back regularly! I highly recommend this spa as a terrfic retreat!

I purchased two gift certificates (each at $100) from the Aequis spa over the telephone in December 2008. They mailed me the certificates and I gave them as Christmas gifts to my sisters-in-law last Christmas. I then made an appointment with Aequis for the three of us to have manicures/pedicures in February 2009. I made the appointment a month in advance because it is very difficult for the three of us to arrange our schedules to get together. The day before the appointment, Aequis phoned to say that one of their manicurists had quit and another was sick, so they had to cancel my appointment. They also said they didn't know when they could reschedule because they had to replace one of their manicurists before they could give the three of us manicures at one time. I asked for the manager of the spa to call me back to see if I could get a refund on the gift certificates. They said she would call, but I was never contacted. Over the course of the last year, I have called the spa periodically to follow up and either schedule another appointment or get my money back. No one EVER answers the phone; no one EVER returns my messages. I've called probably a dozen times. Last week I drove to the spa to talk with them in person, but it was closed, despite the fact that the hours posted said they should be open. Online reviews show that many other people are not getting calls returned.

This might just be the longest post ever because I want EVERYONE to feel how I am feeling right now..... Where on earth do I even begin. I was off to another day in the grind when I all of the sudden was swept away on the best surprise day I have ever had. I had no idea, but apparently a dear friend of mine had arranged an entire spa day just for me AND had also set up little presents for me throughout my spa day. I arrived and was instantly swept away in my sensory journey where I got to completely customize my aromatherapy that would be used throughout my entire visit. I was then taken back to get changed and receive my foot treatment, which is where my first present came to find me. I was delivered my favorite coffee from Starbucks to sip on during my foot massage... it was just perfect. Just before I was about to fall asleep on their huge comfy couches, I was taken by my massage therapist, Jamaica, to my BEAUTIFUL private room. Wow... let me tell you. Deep yummy chocolate colors, golds, reds, candles and Buddha! I was in love... Just as my massage begins, the meditative music gets very quiet and all of the sudden Jack Johnson starts playing! Present number 2, my entire massage was to some of my favorite artists. Michael Jackson, Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, Damien Rice.... ahhh, I could not believe it. Jamaica was perfection. She read my body like I couldn't even believe. My neck has been bothering me for SO long and now it is if there was never a problem. After my 90 minute massage, I was taken to a lounge and was told that my next therapist would be with me shortly and to just breathe and relax. (which was not going to be hard to do at all) Then came present number 3, a warm, yummy, breakfast sandwich! Which couldn't have been more perfect because I was starving :) I was then greeted by Megan and Samantha, who would be taking me on the next step of my journey. Which apparently was a 90 minute tandem Facial! I didn't really know what I was in for but WOW! While one was working on my face, I had another massaging my hands and then scrubbing and massaging my feet! I didn't know where to focus! With different breathtaking aromas coming at me, hot towels being wrapped around me, 4 hands working simultaneously.... I still have no words to describe how it felt. Megan, I can only thank you for how flawless my skin looks and for my 'glow' that only you could accomplish. And as for Samantha... I type all day long and that hand and arm massage was JUST what I needed. Everything, I mean EVERYTHING, was absolutely perfect!

My special visit to Aequis will be something I will remember forever. Every single detail that could have made my day even more perfect, was met AND taken to the next level. If you need to spoil someone you love, trust me, this is the place to do it. I will never be able to thank my friend enough for the thought that was put into my day of relaxation.... It was just what I needed. Thank you so much to the staff at Aequis for making this the most perfect spa day I could ever have asked for!

I travel all over the world and have enjoyed great massages in many cities. The massage given by Jamaica was one of the best ever.

"I could go on at length, but I will just mention a few aspects. First would be mood and tone. You set that from the outset with your strong but comforting presence. I also found the body work to be practiced at a level I would have to call masterful or virtuosic. You managed intense deep pressurewhere it mattered and knew how to read my body. Finally, your comments at the end about ways I might limber up and work on flexibility were well received and much appreciated. "

I was extremely well treated in all respects and have difficulty understanding the negative reviews here. There was no sign of any of those issues - just a completely pleasurable experience from beginning to end.

Pros: Excellent massage, great atmosphere, good service

Cons: none

My husband bought me 3 package treatments consisting of facial, massage, body exfoliation and pedicure each package was to be 4 hours long and cost 200.00. scheduling appointments were extremely difficult and about 4 weeks out. on my spa day there was scheduling errors and only the facial and massage was preformed. when I asked about the other services we had pre paid for I was told sorry I would have to re schedule but no time for the next month but a manager would give me a call. two days latter no call so I called the manager who was so rude and argued with me regarding what was in my package!. lucky for me my husband had printed out the package when he purchased it. I was so angry after talking to the staff I decided I would wait and cool off and call back later 3 months later I called and asked to have the gift certificates mailed to me again the phone staff was so rude. She actually tried to rip me off and only give me the services that were miss scheduled the first time (pedicure and exfoliaton) and not give me the other whole package which was purchased.
We purcharsed a 600.00 package 3 full day spa treatments once this company has money in hand they do not want to deliver on the services
I would advise anyone not to go to this establishment and certainly not to buy gift certificates because they make it impossible to use them.

I feel healed after my hour massage at Aequis. From beginning to end, it was a deeply gratifying experience that relaxed my every nerve. As my mind wandered over work and what people were thinking, the staff at Aequis brought me back to earth allowing me to truely enjoy myself in the moment. It all started with a sensory journey where I blurted, "I like lavender." The therapists informed me, "Close your eyes and what you like might surprise you." Indeed, lavendar smelled like rotten oranges to me as my nose chose what I needed that day. My foot soak and calf and foot rub had me in a trance and ready to receive a body massage. I was comfortable and warm as a kink in my neck disintegrated to the nothing from which it came. My therapist used her abilitys to respond to my bodys needs and some real healing was accomplised. I'm excited for my facial!

I planned a wonderful couples massage with my husband. Not only was the staff friendly and the atmosphere very pleasing and calm but what makes a great massage is a skilled therapists. I have never had a better massage experience and am going back.

If you're looking for the total spa experience, there is no spa in Portland that matches Aequis. The minute you walk in, you're taken to a far away tranquil environment that instantly relaxes you. Lighting, decor, staff training, facility, and treatment all work together to reinforce this atmosphere. Superb.
I have treatment scheduled next week -this will my first visit since they moved to their new location in the Pearl . Cannot wait.

Despite the recent reviews I attempted to make an appt. for a treatment. I never got a call back. I don't care how exclusive you are, it is simply bad business not to return phone calls. I refuse to make attempt after attempt to make an appt. There are plenty of other spas in the area that I'm sure will actually pick up when I call and schedule an appt.

The girls had the place to themselves and were treated above and beyond what was promised. They did a great job and although they were very difficult to get a hold of, and scheduling was difficult - not sure what happened but once contact was made things fell into place and the princesses were granted their every wish.

This fascinates me.

Does anyone really believe that ex-employees just hang out on their former employer's citysearch reviews all day?

Further, IF they are ex-employees, do they not see they have far better avenues than this to resolve their issues (assuming this isn't just a defamation play)?

Or maybe they don't even want resolution? (which would be reallllllly pathetic.)

I've been to Aequis a few times. Most times it was excellent. One time they really bungled up my session. It happens. You know what? Megan took full responsibility for the situation (though it wasn't really her doing... it was one of her staff... maybe you?) , and rectified it to my satisfaction.

This leads me to believe from experience that she is one who will take responsibility for her actions, and that your accusations may have ulterior motive. Rather than pursue an ineffective (at best) campaign on citysearch, why don't you pick up the phone, call Megan at Aequis and work to a resolution (here's the number: 503-223-7847). As others have reported, you might get an answering machine. So... give up? Hell no, show some courage and leave a voice mail. Then you two can talk and reach a resolution, UNLESS, of course, this whole citysearch campaign is nothing more than an inability on your part to accept responsibility for YOUR actions (you know, the ones that probably got you fired... you did say ex-employee, correct?)

Defamatory fake "reviews" that don't help people decide whether Aequis is right for them are NOT the solution.

Heck, I'm not even with Aequis, and your drama has gotten under my skin, enough to prompt me to post. I can only imagine what your former friends still working at Aequis think of you for trying to put them out of a job. Take some responsibility for once, drop the hide-n-seek libel, and IF there truly is an issue, get it resolved. You know, like a civil human.

Pros: Good place.

My husband and I had what I would classify as world class massages there. It was a little tricky getting an appointment, but we're originally from NY, so we're pretty used to the good places being hard to get into. Bottom line for us: it was worth it.

It's interesting reading the recent good reviews for Aequis, or that Aequis is even still in business since many, many of it's accounts are in arrears. I have a confirmation from a claims handler at the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industry that there are SEVERAL claims against Aequis and it's owner Megan Klein Fitzgerald. Apparently Megan refuses to respond to any of these claims from the poor employees who were duped into working for her, only to never receive the payment they deserve. Apparently now the state will have to serve her with legal papers and start a more aggressive process to get the delinquent Megan to actually pay her employees. It's so sad and pathetic that Megan and Aequis claim to be all new agey and peace to the world, but in actuality Megan is completely shady and underhanded. I wonder if BeckyJoe who also owned her own small business and thinks we're being mean and petty, actually paid her employees. Or, if BeckyJoe weren't paid by a client, would she go after that person for payment? Does that then make her mean and petty like she thinks we are? Or does she think, as Megan does, that it's perfectly ok not to pay employees?

At any rate, if you want to believe these recent positive reviews, then by all means please do. That way Megan still has a business, and income that the state can track down so her employees can actually get paid the money Megan rightfully owes them.

Let me say this, I did have some trouble getting the appointment scheduled similar to some of the reviews below. I did, however, get that worked out with a personal call from the owner, Megan. Today was the day that my boyfriend and I visited the spa and had a really great experience. From the beginning of our appointment where we worked out our aromatherapy to the time we left, we were made to feel extremely special and were well taken care of.
For those of you that take reviews seriously, it is pretty apparent from the content/timing of the bad reviews that they don't seem legit. I would highly recommend giving Aequis a try for yourself. The folks that were working there did a great job and we will be back.

I went and had a really wonderful time. I can't say others didn't have the same level of perfect service I got, but reading a few of the previous posts makes me suspect Aequis has a rogue disgruntled employee or jealous competitor. I have run small businesses before so I know how it goes. The way it sounds so personal it sounds like some one or some ones with an agenda, a little time on their hands, and a handful of free easy to create CitySearch accounts. All I can say is, "been there" Aequis. Just keep up the same level of professional experience you showed us and let the rest sort itself out.

The overwhelming majority have been HORRIBLE.

Stay away as they are not worth your hard earned money in these times!

Aequis is uniquely unapologetic about providing terrible customer service. It's incredulous. After calling for 4 weeks straight with no reply, they acted as if it was my fault for not being proactive enough. I actually went in to the spa to try to schedule an appointment. The woman at the front desk was especially rude. She said it was impossible for her to schedule something.

Aequis is infamous for selling gift certificates and not honoring them. I have a $250 gift certificate and they refuse to give me an appointment. I will likely report them. They are selling gift certificates that you can't cash in.

I really enjoyed my time at Aequis. I had a fantastic facial, and the staff provided very helpful information for the future care of my skin. Most importantly, my mother is in a wheelchair and not able to speak very much, but she was still treated with the utmost respect. The staff really worked to accommodate her...all of which was enormously appreciated.

While I understand that they have had a change of locations recently and that that can be difficult, how do they expect to make money if no one is answering the phones? I have been calling for DAYS trying to reach someone and NO ONE ANSWERS THE PHONE. NO ONE RETURNS MY MESSAGES. Exasperated, I walked into their new building and requested to make an appointment. The woman told me to call the number and when I told her that no one answers the phone, I was AGAIN told to just "keep calling". Appalled with their horrible customer service from supposedly one of the best spas in town. What is going on over there?????

Aequis is all gloss and absolutely no substance or follow through. I've worked at Aequis for Megan, so I have real first hand experience at what a shoddy, pathetic operation it is. After about two weeks of working there half the staff abruptly quit because Megan was not paying them. Also, she had not paid several vendors so Aequis was unable to supply the adequate products to customers such as shampoo and conditioner for the showers. And they had run out of key cleansers for facials but had no money to buy new ones, which was an open joke to the employees. Rather than being honest to the customers and admit Aequis couldn't provide the level of service it claims, they just went right on bilking clients out of exorbitant amounts of money while providing sub-standard service at best. And don't even get me started on the cleanliness or lack there of. Absolutely horrible, like working at a fast food restaurant and never wanting to eat out again because of how disgusting things are behind the scenes. One the showers was completely off limits because of a mold infestation, that had a disgusting odor, yet nothing was done to fix the problem at all. Megan just closed the door to that shower and kept on charging clients while placing them ,and employees, in hazardous conditions. One therapist had to file a claim with the state because he was suffering symptoms of mold sickness(citysearch won't let me use the harsher word for it), but the place never shut down or tried to let customers know. Megan claims to want to help people and the universe blah, blah, blah, but at the end of the day she's just another shady business woman only interested in helping herself.

So, just to start I had a gift certificate given to me in March, and I could not get in until August. The only reason I was able to get in then is because I showed up at the spa and requested to speak with someone about all of the un-returned phone calls/messages/emails. Terrible customer service, they thought it was funny and didn't really seem to care that I was so frustrated with them. Then they tried to schedule me with their new therapist that had started that week!
I had a friend get a $1000 full day spa certificate and the refuse to call her back and schedule her. They say they are moving, but does that give them the excuse to not call anyone back? She just wants her money back at this point, she got the gift certificate in January! She wants nothing to do with this crappy place but no one will call her back. The staff there is very unprofessional and it just seems like no one cares about the customers. Here are just a few of the unreturned attempts to speak with someone: went in thursday and the office manager was supposed to call us back, never did. Calls on 5/7, 5/18, 5/22, 5/27, 7/1 and 7/13, emails on 5/7 and 5/17. Went in again on 7/9, and there was no manager again to speak with. I would not recommend going to this spa for anything. I had another friend who went in and had the worst pedicure ever - she said that the polish chipped the next day and her feet looked worse than they did when she first walked in there.
