This restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside (or from the inside, for that matter) but don't let it fool you. Their prices are reasonable and their food is excellent. The service is always quick and the food never disappoints. The waitstaff sometimes seem a little rushed but are always friendly. This "hole in the wall" is definitely worth checking out!
I had dinner and had the chimichanga with beef and chicken and the beef and chicken were so tender they melted in your mouth, it was full of flavor and the service was excellent, my experience was great and I will surely return numerous times
Pros: great margaritas and great food
Cons: only one in around
After seeing all the great reviews my family decided to try Lupe's I decided to believe the reviews stating that poor reviews were written by the competition. What a total disappointment! My main reason to try it was because I was craving chips and salsa. The chips were really stale, generic tortilla chips (not even the semi-authentic ones you can get at any grocery store). And the salsa was bland and sweet.
The flautas were filled with very under-spiced chicken...it had no flavor. It's like the people who are cooking have never tasted authentic mexican food.
The only bright spot was the Jalapeno Poppers (perfectly cooked and served with an awesome Raspberry Chipotle Sauce).
Would definitely not go here again. Save your money and go to one of the carts downtown.
Pros: Decent Margaritas; Great Jalepeno Poppers
Cons: Bland Food; Stale Chips;
*Old and cheap feeling
*Service was ok
For as long as the place has been here, they've never updated the interior. It's starting to look run down. Outside of that, it wasn't half bad.
Pros: Good food. No crowds.
Cons: Old and cheap ambience.
The staff is amazing and very friendly. Food is amazing, great place if you are driving through defiantly stop by this place!!! On of those little amazing spots!!!
Pros: Best mexican food in metro area
Cons: Nothing at all
Me and my friends and family love this restaurant. When we consider having Mexican food, this is the place we always go to. The food is fresh and absolutely delicious!
The few people who have given Lupe's Escape a negative review must work for their competition (such as Juan Coronado, etc.)
Pros: Excellent food, friendly service, reasonable prices
Cons: Can get crowded
Love this place, have been going there for about 10 years. The food is fresh, tasty and affordable and the atmosphere is fab. Definitely give this place a try, you wont be sorry!
Pros: Great food, drinks and price!
This place has terrible microwaved food. You can see all of their microwaves in the kitchen.
As I was sitting in the waiting room for a table, I was able to see into their kitchen. I counted about 6 or 7 microwaves in there. They had one small grill and stove which they were not using at all. I sat and watched the guys in the kitchen for about 20 minutes while waiting for a table. They had all of the food pre-made sort of like a school cafeteria where they just throw it together. They would put everything on the plate and then microwave every dish for a total of 2 minutes on which I saw was High Power.
Their food is not good at all. It tastes like it has been microwaved, and you can tell because all of the cheese that they put on top of the burritos is thoroughly melted. You can see all of the microwaves they have in their kitchen when you walk past the bar area to go sit down.
The inside of this place is pretty grungy and dirty looking also. Their chips and salsa weren't even good. Please, I recommend you do not go to this place. Juan Colorado and On The Border are even better than this place and they are huge chains!
Pros: The rice and beans are okay.
Cons: Microwaved food, bad menu selection, bad margarita's, bad chips & salsa, dirty & grungy.
having recently moved to the OR from AZ, and having grown up in the southwest, ie Phoenix and San Diego and having lived in northern NM for twenty years, I consider myself to know decent mexican food and I must say the while Lupe's is cute, the food that we had there the one time we visited was pretty definitely the worst excuse for mexican food I've ever experienced...had better in south Florida and Cleveland, OH.
Pros: nice colors on the wall, liked the hats
Cons: food was unrecognizable as mexican
We've returned to this divey little restaurant time and time again. The food is excellent. Authentic, fresh and delicious. The service is good or bad depending on the time of day and how busy they are.
Pros: Great Food, Great Value
Cons: service can be slow when they are busy
This is my first-time message. I worked at Lupe's back in '83 as a diswasher, I was 13 years old. This place has been around forever! My grandfather was mexican therefore a lot of cookin' was a must. I really enjoy the food here. Everytime we want to go out for mexican food-it's always Lupe's. I've been to many resturants in this area only to return to Lupe's.
I love this place and recommend it anyone!
Really, I am not looking to rant--we have passed it enough times and we love a good divey Mexican joint--and went in with those paticular rose colored glasses on. The smell as we walked up was very promising... The place was dirty, and that is not really a knock because, well, it's a dive and that is just part of the casualness of a place. The menus had "samples" of many of the dishes. OK, that'll slide too. The salsa? Oh, I am sorry, sugar has no place in a salsa. The salsa is Just Wrong. Funky chips--and I will not abide with the arguement that you cannot get decent tortilla chips in Oregon, they are out there, I know, and I love 'em--these wierd little things at Lupe's are not good, not stale, just not good. And that poor pig that died to be my carnitas...steamed canitas? Nope, that ain't right. Cook it in a flavorful broth, then shread it and fry it up, that's how it is supposed to be done--and this wasn't a bad day in the kitchen--though a peak in the kitchen as we left would gave us the impression that they had a very, very bad day--no, this seemed to be how they cook carnitas there. The pico de gallo was make from those crappy green-on-the-inside WinCo romas, I reconize 'em. The guacamole was actually good, the service, very good--God love the servers there. So are we heading back? Most likely no--though to hear you all rant about this place, maybe we will--the bar specials looked good and liquor can hide a multitude of sins in a kitchen...
Pros: Servers, guacamole, easy in and out and good parking, easy to find
Cons: the kitchen and the housekeeper--though if they get a cook, the latter becomes endearing
A little hole in the wall place that has been in Aloha for twenty years.
Lupe?s was always the best around for good Mexican food.
Back in 92 I moved away and when I moved back in 2005 all of the old restaurants that I use to go to were gone or not the same.
Lupe?s is just the same as it was twenty years ago. Good quality, fresh and yes waitresses with attitude. Isn?t that true in most hole in the wall places that have good food? As a regular I walk in and they asked if it?s the usual and that?s it. My chips, salad and dinner are all brought out I pig out on it and go. Consistently good food each time.
I make the ten mile trip once a week.
Pros: Good food sassy staff.
Cons: it's in Aloha
I have to say, i like to consider myself a mexican food conniseur, especially having grown up on home made recipes my whole life. Having that said, i'm a little picky when dining out at such places. I have to say, i was more than pleasently surprised with Lupe's escape! The food was outstanding as well as the service i received. Even on a busy saturday night i was greeted with a warm welcome and a friendly smile. The food was as traditional as my grandmothers recipies and just as delicious!!! The margaritas are incredible as well!! Think, little home town diner meets family dinner table meets a small lil restraunt in mexico and that's Lupe's escape! Relaxed, fun atmosphere and good food and drink make this place every bit of the five stars i've given it!!!
Pros: Carnitas plate dinner
Ate here tonight because of the over all positive reviews.
Good food, from the fried egg enchilada down to the bean dip - not the best, but definately worth seeing for yourself if it hits the spot. The chips and salsa are the blandest I've ever had (which is why we got bean dip) - think tomato and jalepeno puree with chips from safeway. Cadillac margaritas were decent. This is a good casual Mexican spot you could go to on a whim when you're having a craving. I'll still keep Pepita's as my main Mexican place though.
Now on to the service - I had to get up and ask for my bean dip after waiting for 10 painful minutes, I did so watching my waitress sitting with either the owner or a regular at a table. I was pretty much not going to tip well after that. BUT, the waitress had noted to remove olives from my girlfriends burritos and than noted to ommit them from other food we had (a logical, but not guaranteed courtesy). Secondly when we got the margaritas she asked if we wanted to have the Marnier as a sidecar or in it, simple but nice. Overall they are proffesionals, but need to stop hanging out with people like they don't work there - this is sometimes ok in a bar, but not when I'm hungry!
After my friends found this little gem we were instant regulars. Sometimes it may get a little busy, but it is well worth the wait. The staff are always nice. Go with friends or family, we like to enjoy the outside patio with a blended margarita and my personal favorite the Tijuana Torpedo. We have always had good service, but never go expecting to be in and out fast (its not a fast food joint). Its best to enjoy a drink and munch on their chips and salsa while you wait. Prices are very reasonable compared to the quality of food, oh and did I mention the margaritas!
Pros: Outdoor patio, good portions, good margarita
Cons: smaller so not for very large parties on a busy night
Service is among the worst I have ever had. The two waitresses were friendly, when they bothered stopping by. But If you aren't a regular, you don't warrant much attention. 15 minute wait to order while the waitress is standing 10 feet away from you either on a personal call or talking to a regular customer.
I have tried this restaurant three separate times, determined to like it. I had crappy service twice and passable service once. I will waste no more money here.
The food is boring. Chicken for the chicken taco was totally unseasoned, just boiled chicken, no spices at all. The rest of what I had was bland and unexceptional.
Mazatlan (near Safeway) just up TV is a much better bet.
Pros: Close to my house
Cons: bad service, bad food
If your looking for a place that serves fresh food made when you order not the day before Lupe's is the place to go. The decor is a little rough but the food quality and serving size is the best. have not had a bad meal yet in the 10 plus years of going there.
Pros: fresh made food, price, serving size
I love mexican food and have been to many. This place has the most consistently good food I have found. Occasionally I will think, weel maybe I am missing something and will go somewhere esle but I never am satisfied. Always good, always friendly, always a good value.
We've been doing Lupe's for 12 years now.....& will continue!! This funky little place has GREAT FOOD & good service. You can tell by all the regulars you see, that this place is definitely doing something right!! My company does take out for our lunch meetings all the time!
Pros: Good Food, Friendly Service, Good Prices
My Girlfriend and I went here and were highly dissapointed. The Decor is drab, the serivce was horrible and the food was gross. The waitress gave us chips that tasted like they hd been left out all month long, our food took 45 minutes to get served to us and when it did come all I wished it that I would have went Taco Bell. I Dont ever reccomend going to this place, there are tons of places to get good mexican food, and I dont see how anyone could ever think this is one of them.
Cons: , Service, Value
After several years of saying "we must try that place," we finally did! It definitely won't be our last visit to Lupe's! Our food was flavorful (WITHOUT the typical reliance on hot sauce to provide the only flavor). Reminded me of an old-fashioned "diner" with a Mexican flavor -- great service, good food, low prices. Regulars were greeted at the door and everyone was relaxed, having a great time. We'll be back!
Pros: kid friendly, fun and cozy
Lupe's is a great place. It is family run and we have been eating there for years. The food and service is always good.Margaritas on the patio all summer long. Try it you,ll like it!
Pros: margaritas, great patio, good value
The food is one up from Taco Bell and prices aren't too bad. But if you want good mexican, there are lots of other better places. Don't understand the high rating on this one either. I would give it a 6/10.
Cons: , Food
We have been going to this place for YEARS! The restaurant is small, but the food makes up for it. Great specials that aren't always on the regular menu. The servers are FANTASTIC...you feel like you just stepped into their kitchen. We have been going there weekly for over 5 years...and will continue to.
Pros: Service, Food, Inexpensive
Cons: VERY small
I liked Lupe's better than Chevy's mexiacan food.
The food is all fresh but I have to say my dish didn't have lots of flavor to it. I'd like to go back and try some of the other dishes.
Any Mexican place that has menudo on the menu has to be Authentic!
If I do not have my Lupes fix at least twice a month I start into withdrawal. Probably the best mexican food I have had anywhere
Pros: food, drinks, salsa
My husband and I have been eating here since it opened. The food and staff are wonderful. They have the best chile rellanoes.
Pros: great salsa
Cons: the worst chips
I have eaten here once, but it was a dinner to remember.
The enchelada with a fried egg on top was the BEST mexican food I have ever eaten!
It was the closest to authentic mexican food I've found in the portland area.
Alas I dont live to near the place, so I always forget its there.
The portions were perfect, and the drinks kept on coming.
Pros: Small, Friendly Staff, Awesome Interior
Cons: Hard to find Bathroom, Small parking lot
It is not often that you find wonderful mexican food, margaritas, and staff all in one place. This place definately has fresh and healthier mexican food. THe salsa is great and the service is (usually) exceptional.
I have never eaten anything here that is not exceptionally fresh and exceptionally tasty, and I eat here a lot.
Pros: food, margaritas, service
From the outside it does not appear as much, but there is some wonderful food to be discovered inside. The service is always friendly and if you need more fire in your dish there is 'Dave's Insanity Sauce' behind the bar.
