I love history and I am not from the west coast so when my son and I visited here for the fist time we were surprised by the history of the fort. I had no idea that they Japanese ever fired on this fort until we toured the old gun locations and read the the historical posters. We just visited for the day but would go back again if given the chance.

I've enjoyed Fort Stevens since I was young. We took our children there for their first camping experience and they loved it. It's close enough to walk to the beach and for a short drive, you can go on a shopping trip to Seaside or Astoria. My kids also enjoyed the long bike trails throughout the park.

PROS: lots to do, clean bathroom/showers
CONS:

There are a lot of lovely places to rough it during the summer, especially in this neck of the woods. But Fort Stevens has a little extra oomph - in addition to great amenities both inside and outside the part, including a nearby KOA, they are very bullish on historical reenactments. Try to plan your visit to coincide with one of the World War II or Civil War reenactments, or make sure you can visit some of the fort's historic batteries.

Fort Stevens is the perfect camp spot for families. There is something for everyone at this park. There are miles of trails and bike paths, an amphitheater, a lake with swimming area, fishing, kite flying etc. The spots are nice, lots of trees. The showers are the nicest I've ever encountered at a state park. They are hot and lots of water pressure. You can walk or ride to the beach, but if you're not feeling that energetic there is plenty of parking space. The lake offers day use or is available to the campers. There is a nice swimming area and a few docks to stand on and fish. It is close to Astoria and Seaside so day trips into town are a must. If you don't want to rough it too much there;s even an espresso stand at the camp entrance.
