Good spot! I used to work here and always ate the shrimp tacos. I bar tended down stairs where we had music and free pool.

While your checking out the Hawthorne/ Belmont scene, drop in for some great drinks and pretty amazing Italian food. Great blues music, too!

A group of friends and I stopped in at the Blue Monk for a bite before a night out. The food was absolutely incredible. Their chef is amazing and puts together an eclectic selection of dishes. Needless to say, we spent dinner passing around plates and trying each other's dinners.

My wife and I discovered this place by accident one night, looking for a spot to grab a beer before a movie. We have since gone back many times and taken a lot of friends from out of town here. When we found it, they weren't technically open yet but their door was unlocked so they invited us in for a beer until their kitchen opened and we were happy to oblige them. Their beer list is expansive and the staff is friendly, funny and knowledgeable. And the food is amazing. Huge portions and delicious. The blue lighting and darkened corners make for a great date spot.

I stumbled upon this place with my boyfriend and my cousen. What a nice surpise! We were looking for a place to get a lil tipsy before we went to the wonderland. The atmosphere was great and the bartenders were pleasant/ helpful even on a Saterday night. We had a miscomunication on a drink and they fixed the mishap without a rude comment or extra charge. I would go here again for sure!
OH and the no smoking thing was awesome

They say the Vegan lasagna is Vegan..it sadly is not. I had some very harsh words thrown at me from the pompous rude owner. I would warn all Vegans to beware. The entire evening even for my meat and dairy eating pals was awful. Cold food, bland Marinara sauce and day old bread. Watery tasteless cocktails and a waiter who can't even open a bottle of vino without busting the cork into 5 pieces and shoving the last piece back into the bottle. MmmMM Yum! Don't waste the time or money.

We had heard the Blue Monk was unsatisfactory from a number of people but wanted to eat, have a few drinks and check out jazz. We have never experienced such terrible service and the food was sub-par at best. We heard the staff was snobby, rude and inattentive and found the rumors to be true. Do yourself a favor and stay clear of the Blue Monk.

I dig this place since it is very close to my house and the staff are always excellent! The food (for the most part) is well done but not great and a little too spendy for the neighborhood. That said if they had more eclectic music in the basement the place would be a must stop...unfortunately they turned it into a game-room.

Pros: Great staff gets to know ya

Cons: could be better for the $$$

We went for music but must have been too early or it was not playing. Had antipasto and a ceaser salad both were good and not hard to m,ess up. Husband had the chicken parm not a big fan but was okay. Would go back to check out the jazz.

Pros: Service

Great customer service, great neighborhood bar. Love the beer and food menu. I love that when I come here they rush out my food (I'm visibly pregnant). I love that it's non-smoking during dinner. Everyone is really friendly and thoughtful. The atmosphere is great too.

Pros: Consistently great food and service

I was not aware that Belmont had turned into a runway....... because we were served luke warm airplane food. The service was excellent - then wine list was above average - but the food was terrible. The chicken parm was hard as a rock - and served with cold pasta and frozen veggis. Salt and pepper would have helped - but they dont even offer THAT on the table!
Go for the music - NOT the food.

We celebrated my girlfriends 30th here the other night on a friends recommendation. With 18 people it was a large group. Chris, Tim, and Beth were fantastic! We started out with the appetizer platter and boy was it good, we especially liked the curry and coconut polenta, and there were raves about the spicy tomato soup. Friendly and attentive the staff executed a seamless transition from drinks to appetizers to dinner. The price and proportions were just right. The specials of manicotti and chicken parmesan were down the hatch in no time! We'll be back with our friends again soon!

Okay, okay! I admit it. The reason why I was interested to visit this place is because it was feature on "Rachael Ray's Tasty Travels". It also didn't hurt that I appreciate jazz music. The restaurant was empty as me and my fellow OMSI Star Wars companion entered. The basement bar where the band was playing also saw one other table and one other couple. Pretty empty for a Thursday. The band was super enthusiastic and play with gusto. I tip my hat to them for playing with such passion even with such a small crowd.

The food menu came and I was disappointed by the selection. I expected a little more choices. My companion ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and I had a really interesting ravioli dish, which was pink peppercorn ravioli stuffed with butternut squash, goat cheese, cranberries and almonds with caramelized onions and beets in a port reduction sauce. I chose that dish because it was feature on that episode and it sounded like the most unique thing on the menu. It was certainly unique in taste as well, but I found it too sweet for a entree. My companions spaghetti and meatballs were awesome thought. Love those huge meatballs! Yummy!

The most impressive thing about the Blue Monk beside the band playing, was the extensive beer list! Talk about selection! They even had beers with up to 12% alcohol content. Most of their bottled beers were European styled beers. I had an awesome Brother Theolonius which had an 11% alcohol content. It was a strong dark ale and tasted great!

Verdict: Go for the beer and music. Give the food a miss!

We went to the amazing Shelly Rudolph show at the Blue Monk. The lower level music venue is amazing. Although there are an incredible number of beers to choose from... they are served at room temperature. Mixed drinks are poorly made - except for the Blue Monk. Our servers was polite and seemed pretty cool - but not super attentive. Overall the experience was positive - just don't get beer and stick with simple drinks like vodka tonic or something.

Pros: Music, Music, Music

Cons: Warm Beer

Blue Monk is a nice change. It is quite unique from the beer list to the decor. The owner has often been serving when I have been in and is very polite and knowledgeable about his beer list and menu. Great beers, decent cocktails and good food. For constructive critism I would say that it does sometimes take a while to get food and the menu is rather limited, but neither are fatal flaws. Still havn't made it for the jazz shows downstairs but that is a great excuse to come back!

We heard mixed reviews but unfortunately decided to try it anyway- big mistake! We seated ourselves after we stood there for awhile. The inattentive server eventually brought us oil in a small bowl- no bread. We waited an hour & when the food arrived, it wasn't what we ordered! I told the server that there was a mistake and he was rude & put-off. He took the food back to the kitchen & picked at it, brought it back & asked if we wanted to take it home. I said no because of food restrictions & he said we should feed it to a dog or something. It was unreal! I've never experienced such arrogant, rude, unprofessional service & we'll never eat there. I would absolutely discourage anyone from eating here not only because of the horrific service but the quality of food for the price just isn't worth it.

Pros: nothing!, nothing!, nothing!

Cons: service, food quality , rude, pretentious

There was only one person working the bar and 7-8 tables. He rocked, but he was spread extremely thin. One more server would have helped everyone. The clams, while good...weren't served in broth. Just drained and somewhat dry. I want yummy garlic butter broth to dip my bread into! The beef tenderloin was excellent, but the chx parm very overcooked. Although the veggies were sauteed perfectly al dente. Dessert selection was awful. Tiramisu(which I hate) and a tangerine torte...that's it. Pretty sad. Food a bit overpriced...I would go for a drink...but won't eat there again.

My husband and I were incredibly pleased with how TASTY the food is, especially the antipasto plate and the eggplant parmegian (which comes on a bed of crisply steamed veggies and al dente penne). Generous portions and everything tasted very fresh. Decor was relaxed yet hip. We were on "date night" but we plan on bringing our 2-year-old daughter with us next time (kids are welcome in dining room until 10 p.m.) as there was room to wander freely without being an annoyance. Waitperson was incredibly attentive, prompt, and super-nice.

The curry & coconut polenta is out of this world, although it could lose some of the oil it swims in. Ravioli with pear sauce was a bit on the sweet side, but dish was very creative. Pasta should have been more al dente (bit of water on plate) but sauce was tasty. A respectable performance, and worth another visit. Food creativity and waiter friendliness were best parts. Fun, unpretentious quintissential Portland ambiance.

I passed by this place last Sunday and saw that they were open for brunch. I tried the stuffed French toast...it was delicious! Great atmosphere. Their beer selection looked great but I couldn't order beer with breakfast (I was with my Mom).

I've been here twice and enjoyed it thoroughly both times. good as a couple spot or with a group of friends. Food is pretty decent- price and taste. Drinks are good, though a tiny bit on the weak side. But the service is great and friendly, and it's just a super place to relax and hang out and listen to some great tunes.

We walked into the Blue Monk, and were greeted by the stark upstairs restaurant/bar. To the right are the stairs to the basement, where the live music is. The basement is a large room with blue/green walls and blue candles on each table.
The band started about 10 minutes after we arrived, and we were the only people there for about 20 minutes. The band was very good, and the overall experience provided a great atmosphere. We ordered a couple of drinks and their Chocolate Mousse Cake, all of which were excellent.

My first impression of this place was, "Wow" the staff is really friendly here. They were very accommodating, and eager to please. The blue upstairs atmosphere was minimal with clean lines. The food was good, and spoke to more about what the place was about. The jazz downstairs did the same. All in all an enjoyable low key evening. I'm going back.

I went to the Blue Monk for the first time last Friday with some friends for dinner. We initially went there for dinner. The food menu was pretty scarce, but the food that we did order was good. The drinks however were outstanding. I probably shouldn't admit that we tried several of their special drinks and liked every one that we had - especially Ruby. The band was enjoyable and the service was great.

The service was slow - very slow. Great selection of beer on tap. The clam pasta was lacking in clams...the clam juice is the best part, as you get toward the end of the meal. Not enough garlic on anything, really. Why isn't the bread free??

We stumbled upon Blue Monk on a Thursday evening just looking for a quick bite, what we found was a gem! How wonderful to find live jazz during a weekday, at a very reasonable cover charge to boot. From the moment we walked in to the time we left the staff was attentive, prompt and friendly. The only complaint is that the live music here winds down early -- being a transplanted Chicagoan I'm used to the music just getting hot at about midnight! -- There's a great selection of Belgian ales, and the antipasto was acceptable (not at all authentic, but the small portion was ample for two, fresh, tasty and very affordable). It was blissful to relax, dine and drink in a completely non-smoking venue. I'll go back and try the main course food for sure. And I hear they show free Jazz themed movies on Sunday nights!

Portland needs more of this. Clubs for grown ups. Live music you can talk over. Leave the Techno & Hip Hop behind with the kids. The beer list is very sophisticated...Quality more than quanity. It even has a few you won't find at Higgins. Menu satisfies both the vegetarian and the carnivore. Impressive portions and value. Smoke free...even the owners go outside. Cover only downstairs, upstairs free. Having the choice adds to the value and ambience. Bring on the Ragtime and Dixieland! Oh, and Zappa.

In a word: Overdue. Nice to have a jazz option with a good bar scene, especially on the east side. We only had a couple of menu items, but they were both well worth the price, though do to a few Chimay Trappiste Ales on tap, I can't remember what they were. As much as I go out, it felt very refreshing to have something more "San Francisco" to frequent. Portlanders often seem to want to compare P-town with the leading nightlife cities of our country. The diversity Blue Monk brings in the vast spectrum of bar styles is a step in the right direction.

Ive been there eight times since they opened and it just gets better. The Blue Monk is the perfect SE Portland spot for a night out with friends or a romantic tryst. Owner, Chris Joseph, certainly knows how to please and Tim Gallineau continues to book excellent music, especially the nights that Ramsey Embick is at the piano. The Sunday night movie is a great way to unwind before a busy workweek. The menu offers a nice selection of East Coast Italian, with the Spaghetti and Homemade Meatballs as a stand out, and yet still maintains the requisite Portland veggie friendly options. The Vegan Lasagna with the Blue Monk Ricotta has become a personal favorite.

blue monk is an old school straight up Jazz joint without the smoking! The only thing smoking in the Blue Monk is the piano!

Best local & traveling jazz acts in PDX, great/affordable food, ample portions, wide variety (love the spaghetti w/homemade meatballs), nice wine list, the worlds finest and rarified beers on tap & bottled, (try Stone Brewry's Arrogant Bastard and Dogfish Midas Touch, beer made from ancient 2700 year old recipe found in King Midas' tomb!). Friendly service; low on the pretension meter. Bartender Chris is a cool cat & fast with great cocktails. Save the attitude for downtown, you won't find it here.

Upstairs is nice open area for Belmont Neighborhood folks to enjoy excellent food, downstairs you enter a cool new place to take a date or just hang out with friends and listen to great music worth $5 cover. I recommend blue monk to anyone.

Trying to be cool but not quite there. Great food, great beer selection, friendly attentive service, but the decor just misses a bit. There is a mishmash of furniture and fixtures, open kitchen, hard surfaces, cloth napkins but no wine glasses. It's like they ran out of money and opened anyway or maybe they let a relative deocorate it for them.
No matter, it's a good value and in the hood.

No matter, it's a good value and in the hood.

Pros: spinach salad, wait staff, beer selection

Cons: bar area, too loud, limited menu

A group of friends and I stopped in at the Blue Monk for a bite before a night out. The food was absolutely incredible. Their chef is amazing and puts together an eclectic selection of dishes. Needless to say, we spent dinner passing
