My husband and I stopped here during lunch time. One woman walked in right ahead of us, making us the only three people in the entire restaurant. The hostess/waitress was extremely rude, slamming our menus down and saying, "you two, sit here!" while she took the other lady to her table. My water had broccoli floating in it, and after the waitress replaced it, she became a little nicer. I got the broccoli beef (I always order this at Chinese places) and my husband got the chicken lo mein. Unbeknownst to us, both dishes came with spring rolls, and she didn't mention that when we ordered a side of them, of course ($2.95 for two 3 inch long spring rolls struck me as a rip-off considering the price of the entrees). The food came about 3 minutes later, which some people might consider a good thing, but it obiously wasn't freshly prepared and who knows how long it had been since anyone had been in the restaurant. The food was pretty good, mall-ish food, but I was expecting the portions to be large like they usually are at other Chinese places (where they charge the same price but you get much more food), so my husband and I could share, which we couldn't really do in the end. They were served just like a regular entree. Another group came in while we were eating (so about 6 people in the restaurant total), and they had to go to the front desk and tell the waitress their egg rolls were cold inside because she didn't come by and ask how the food was. We also had to go up to the counter to pay after leaving the debit card on the table for several minutes (we were sitting about 6 feet from the front desk where two people were standing).

We've been going to August Moon for over 5 years and have always had a good experience! Both their food and service are consistently good. We like the Broccoli Beef, Chicken Fried Rice, Cashew Chicken and Sweet & Sour Chicken... it's always made to order. They have comfy booths and a nice view of 23rd Avenue through nice asian lanterns. The take-out is quick, only about 15 minutes.
They actually have a free parking lot on 23rd, which is a rare find in Nob Hill!

August Moon offers up some great Chinese food in the NW 23rd Street Area, and plenty of it. You'll be getting a doggie bag to bring home.

Been to August Moon for the lunch specials several times - all items have good portions. I especially like the sweet and sour pork and the potstickers. Would recommend.

Located close to Burnside, when shopping in this part of town, we will go here because of both the food and the good service. The portions are enough for two or for one and a doggy bag.

Portland is a town that loves its Thai/Vietnamese/Cambodian, etc, so after moving here it took quite a while to find good Chinese. Now, there are many kinds of Chinese food, and I'm pretty picky. I prefer the San Francisco style, which is not authentic Chinese from China but there you have it. It's what I like, and it's what I finally found at August Moon after a long, sad search of almost a year. These are the flavors I grew up on as a kid and are therefore my comfort food: lo mein, fried rice, egg rolls, and especially egg drop soup. This is the best egg drop soup in town, hands down. It's flavorful, the perfect consistency (not too watery, not too thick) and doesn't have extra "stuff" in it to mess with the utter simplicity of the soup. We've also been pleased to find white meat chicken in a number of dishes, something very unusual in Chinese takeout (if you're going to deep-fry it and cover it with sauce anyway, why use the more expensive white meat, right?) They are always fast with sit-down orders and with takeout, but I wouldn't recommend getting delivery during peak dinner hours on weekends--they don't have many drivers and if someone gets lost the wait time can be much longer than quoted. I have no idea what one of the other reviewers was saying about a rude waitress--most of the staff don't even have a firm grasp of the language (hard to be a smart aleck when you don't speak the language well), and I've always found them perfectly courteous.

I'm surprised by the negative reviews. I've eaten here over a dozen times and have never had a bad experience, though I've never had delivery. The food is my favorite Chinese in Portland, especially the Kung Pao. Sure, it's not very spicy, but have you ever had off-the-menu stuff that was? You gotta spice it up yourself if you like it that way, or ask them to do it. Everything else I've had there has been great as well.

Pros: Excellent food, fast and friendly service

Cons: I don't work in the neighborhood any more.

I can't believe any of the good reviews. The food was nasty and waitress was a smart a$$. I asked what's in the shrimp szechuan and she answered sarcastically: shrimp. No way that the food is fresh, we were served couple minutes after we ordered. And the price is way high. It is a disgrace to Chinese food, and those who think it is the best Chinese food they had, they are missing out a lot on good food. Sorry.

We frequently order delivery from August Moon and are surprised every time by how fast they are (and that's to the Sylvan/Forest Heights area, not downtown). The food is quite good. I've tried several of my favorite standard dishes at this point and all have been very well prepared. There are some interesting things on the menu too. We've become fond of the Lamb Szechuan Style. I'd never seen lamb on a Chinese menu before...

We have used August Moon for many years as our family's favorite local Chinese restaurant. The staff is always nice and their delivery service is outstanding. We love Mongolian beef, the House Special Fried Rice and Sweet and Sour Shrimp (they put the sauce on the side, which is nice). I have tried many other Chinese restaurants all over the country, this one is consistently good.

Sally and her tribe rock this place. I especially love their pork lo-mein and chicken fried rice. Portions are a good size and food is served hot and quick.
I rarely ever have to wait on a take away order.

We ordered our food at 6.30pm and were told that it would be 45 minutes. After 50 minutes, we gave them a call and they said that they were busy that it would be 20 more minutes. So we waited 30 more minutes to give them a call, and the host on the phone had no idea who we were! We gave our address and explained our order and she said that we should have received it a while ago and that she will call us right back. She calls us right back to say that it will be 20 more minutes!!! My husband asked her, isn't out food going to be cold? At that point we were thinking of canceling our order. However the delivery guy showed up and it was 8.15pm!! We ended up waiting 1h45 for our food which came lukewarm!! The hostess on the phone was inconsiderate and impolite! We can understand that it was the day before Thanksgiving but they shouldn't take more than they can handle!!!And thats not all: while eating,my husband found a piece of glass in his beef lo mein CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT? Where did that come from???? Well, we won't order there again, the food is decent but definitively not worth it!!!

Despite the ChinaTown in PDX, I still favor August Moon on 23rd for a good meal. The price is right, service attentive and specials yummy. You'll quickly get addicted to the Crispy Tofu, Tofu Vegetable Soup and array of other tofu dishes. The booths are cozy and it's also right off a bus line if you don't feel like driving. They have a parking lot but it only fits about 3 cars at a time. Overall, it's consistently good and better than a lot of the other "authentic" Chinese places I've come across since moving from NYC. The manager is very nice and will remember you after even one visit.

Reviews made it seem ok, but there's plenty of better chinese places out there. Ordered the general tso's chicken, Hot and Sour soup, and egg roles. Soup and egg roles were fine. The chicken was all dark meat which I find to be sub-par for a specialty item. I don't plan on going back.

I've eaten here at least 100 times since I moved to PDX 10 years ago. No restaurant with such a huge menu does everything perfect. My favorites here are green bean pork, egg flower soup, vegetables deluxe, lemon chicken, sweet and sour anything, broccoli beef, and all chow meins. The atmosphere is a little dingy but 100x better than any place in ChinaTown. Just don't use their bathroom. Service is fast and reliable.

It was also surprising for me to see the bad reviews posted. I've eated at August Moon since it opened, and really enjoy it. I'm a big fan of Chinese food and have found theirs consistantly good. I agree that their General Tso's is not the best I've had, but their sesame beef is what I measure all others against. I was also pleasantly surprised by their honey walnut prawns. I'd recommend this place without hesitation.

Moving here from the midwest, I greatly missed the fantastic Chinese restaurants from the Chicago area. I was very disappointed at the less than satisfying Chinese restaurants here in Portland, until I tried this restaurant. The atmosphere is cozy and the booths are comfortable. Everytime I've eaten here I get the sweet and sour chicken and the waitress gives us complimentary white rice. The chicken has always been very plump and filling, not crunchy and full of fried at like I've found at most Chinese restaurants here and the sweet and sour sauce is perfect with a large amount of pineapples and other goodies mixed into it. This is my favorite Chinese restaurant I've found so far. Oh and you also don't cringe when getting the bill, it's very reasonable for the nice service and delicious food!

I just stumbled on this place and it has the best Sesame Chicken in town! It's all fresh chicken breast meat with no fat and it's not breaded or greasy! The Hot and Sour soup is consistently great too! I think the other people giving reviews are eating the wrong dishes. Its a good thing I didnt read them before I found this little gem. We now bring friends here from out of town and their shrimp dishes, broccoli with beef, etc. have all been terrific! The service is superb and even if the atmosphere is somewhat of a hole in the wall, I'll continue to come here for our favorite dish.

My girlfriend and I eat chinese about once a week. Since moving to Portland a year and a half ago, this is by far the WORST chinese I have tried. The General Tso's came as identically shaped and sized (formed) balls of meat, the flavor of which made me nervous to eat it. The spring rolls were so greasy that the only flavor was, well, grease. The won tons reminded me of extremely stiff cardboard. I would be embarrassed to serve this food to friends. Believe me when I say that ANY of the mall's foodcourt chinese spots are far better than this place. The one up-side was the service, the people that work there were quite friendly and helpful. BUT, being a restaraunt, service alone isn't enough. 3 stars out of 10.

After seeing a 7.5 rating on Citysearch, I decided to try August Moon. My girlfriend and I ordered Potstickers, Mongolian Beef, and General Tso's Chicken. The potstickers were decent, but the other two dishes were barely edible. The beef was slimy and fatty and the chicken was terribly dry. We left nearly all the food behind and had to go find another meal. The prices were high too. Citysearch says $5-$7 but each dish was $10-$12!

I have eaten here many times and love the fact that they are friendly, timely, and they almost always are open! The staff sometimes cracks me up with switching people to different tables to accomodate larger parties of people. The food is pretty good. I usually order the pot stickers, fried rice, and the sweet and sour chicken. I have never had any of it undercooked and they are always without grisle or bone residue. The meals are always huge and tasty. The atmosphere is probably more asian feeling on the outside than on the inside. But overall its better than some others around town.
