A friend who goes to school in the area said I should stop by this place because they have affordable food and drinks. He was sooo right! The price of a pizza has gotten super expensive but my large veggie was under $20 AND it was

I like this place, and I am picky. Very laid back, and they have a really good smoked salmon pasta. The bartender also did a really nice job handling my mom, who is a notorious pain in the rear to service staff. Thanks!

Yummy, good sandwiches and you can even have it made Gluten free. Personally I love their coffees and love the reasonable coffee prices.

Pet the cats when you visit :)

Yummy sandwiches, good prices, friendly staff. Beer and wine. Not somewhere I go as a super exciting culinary destination, but I am perfectly happy to eat there when I am in the neighborhood.

At times when I find myself stuck in SW traffic, needing a break, I take a detour and head toward the Lair Hill Cafe.

They added a pretty decent Happy Hour recently that offers up some pretty tasty and very affordable bites. I find the Pulled Pork Sliders with Fresh Cole Slaw to be the perfect amount of food, and especially for 4 bucks!!! Who can beat that!?

I have only ventured in a hand full of times in the daytime and I must say that it seems like a totally different establishment from day to night. In the day I found the place to be a little messy and the staff to be a bit apathetic. I don't like to see un-bussed tables while the staff is leaning. "If youve got time to lean, youve got time to clean."

On the other hand... in the evening, the whole show is on the shoulders of the man in front. Andre is a great bartender! He can make you a delicious drink using booze that you thought you hated and immediately change your opinion. It's like magic! Also, I must disagree with a prior review and say that I find Andre to be charming and not rude or unhappy. Ive had some great HH's laughing at the bar with him and my fellow patrons. A Good bartender knows when you need another drink, makes them deliciously, and can also tell a really great story!

The Lair Hill Cafe has also just opened on the WEEKENDS!!!! They have a whole new menu for brunches and it is GREAT!!!!

I recommend this place!

Richard and Cheryl have put together one of the great unheralded cafe treasures in Portland. They have created a unique space in the Lair Hill neighborhood where friends and family can enjoy a wonderful lunch, breakfast or dinner in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Wes, Annie, Angela, Andre and the rest make every customer feel right at home, whether you are a first timer or a regular. The food is always fresh, well prepared and tasty. And Wes (and only Wes) knows how to pull a killer triple espresso. I hope they continue their great enterprise for the next 10 years.

Pros: Warm, friendly service. Great food, wonderful atmosphere

Cons: I'm too far away to go there now

.

The service in the morning is great. Wes is behind the counter and always greets people with a smile. The food is a great value, and the atmosphere is good, but the bartender in the evenings needs to find a new job. Andre is rude to customers, and seems to hate his job. I always tip well, and still consistently get treated poorly. I have witnessed this with most of his customers, and it prevents me from spending money there for happy hour, or dinner. (It is unfortunate because I really like the owners Richard and Cheryl.)

Called in a "to go" order, paid for it in person, told them my name, and sat by the counter waitings for my order to materialize.

It was the end of the lunch hour and the place wasn't crowded.

I'm pretty hard to miss at 6'3", but the staff walked by me as the "to go" bags piled up.

After 15 minutes of being ignored I just said: "f**k it" and walked out without my order.

I've eaten here numerous times, since I work up the street, but never again.

This incident may have been a blessing in disguise since the last two times I've eaten here I spent the afternoon regreting it.

Pros: None

Cons: Questionable food handling practices, dusty surfaces

So I've been here twice. The food is your run of the mill Portland cafe food but tasty. When I went in there the other day a cat came out of the kitchen. YES, that's right A CAT. At first I thought that the cat had slipped in the front door and no one had notice but then I saw the staff petting and talking to the cat. The cat walked back and forth from the kitchen and no one seemed to mind. I will NEVER go back there again, as someone who works in the culinary field I find this low level of sanitation unacceptable.

Pros: Homey, local joint

Cons: Scared to eat there

This is the exact antithesis of the chain restaurants; homey, one of a kind, friendly place with good food, good coffee drinks, authenticity. A neighborhood treasure.

I have been patronizing this place for years. Always have gotten sandwiches to go. Excellent. Pretty sure they used to include a side, a pickle, and an andes mint. Great memories of coming here. For the first time I tried dine in. Not so good. The waitress answered my questions on wine and I appreciate that. But after I placed food order and received sandwich, she never once checked on me, she was not busy and I sat at the counter. Pretty obvious and easy to ask a patron how they are doing when they are seated at counter. Next disappointment, the size of the sandwich was really small and came with just a pickle. It tasted great, but I remember their sandwiches being really generous portions. Not impressed.

The Old lair Hill Market is an interesting place to eat. It always has interesting choices of food and espresso drinks. In the summer you can sometimes find a place to sit outside which makes for a comfortable, nice option.

This is a great little cafe. It's ultra casual in decor and offers pleasant sidewalk seating when the weather cooperates. The sandwiches are excellent (try a toasted sandwich), with daily specials, fresh cookies, good coffee, an assortment of fine brews, and even a resident cat or two to make it all the more homey and comfortable.

I work in the neighborhood of this restaurant and have tried to eat there a couple of times. Each time it was the wost experience ever. The wait staff is unbelievably slow, and that is if they get your sandwich right. I am surprised the health dept has not shut this place down. The walls and lamps are dusty and grimy, I am disgusted at having a cat sitting at the counter. Especially when I received a sandwich with a little extra included. Cat Hair. I would never reccomend this place to anyone. There are so many othergreat places around why waste your time there?

The Lair Hill is an all-time favorite lunch spot of mine. I work nearby, and every time I have a business partner of client in town, I try to bring them by here. Very cozy atmosphere, kitzchy decor (The owners, a 50-something married couple call the wall on the North side of the restaurant the "Wall Of Shame" it's filled with Antiques, crafts from their kids' gradeschool years, and other fun stuff.) I know all this because the owners are the type of people that will notice you come in, recognize you and come say hi. If you invite them, they'll even sit down with you and chat about Wine or business or music and movies. The restaurant is clean, inviting, and feels like home. The staff is warm and personable. I can't say enough good things about this place!

OK, so it's nothing fancy. But it has good coffee, and a warm and cute atmosphere- a great neighborhood place. I just wish they were open weekend mornings, when I need my breakfast fix.

Lair Hill has alright food if you just need a quick lunch or want to grab a beer after work-- but fairly awful customer service. Don't expect to get anything quickly-- and certainly don't call in an order or you may be left sitting on the phone for 15 minutes (like I was).

I was in PDX on buis. last week and was taken to the Lair Hill by my client. The place was busy but the service was fine. Great martini and the pesto pasta dish was tasty! The ambiance was great - very homey. Good value two thumbs up! Only neg. no Chianti by the glass.

My friends and I LOVE going here for breakfast. They have a two egg breakfast for $3.95, which includes eggs cooked any way, country potatoes, and toast with jam. They have the best breads for the toast and they always cook my eggs (over medium) perfectly. They have lots of other choices too! The atmosphere is great and the people are very nice! I'm so happy it's right in my neighborhood.

I've been here four times now. The pizza's have been really great. And the pitchers of microbrews for $10.50 are a good deal. But the last two dinners I've had here have been abysmal. I ordered a chicken breast and I received, basically, a small chicken breast on a plate with about four forkfuls of vegetables on the side. It was about as inspiring as a blank sheet of paper and for the price, I wasn't very happy; not to mention still hungry when I had finished it.
I ordered a sandwich the last time I was there, it was the turkey and avocado sandwich, and my sandwich consisted of two pieces of your average store bought bread, about three slices of turkey, a thin layer of avocado, some lettuce, one slice of cheese and some mayonnaise. For $6.50 this was a huge rip-off! I could have had a fresher and more filling sandwich from Quizno's or from the 7/11 just down the street. And it would have cost less. Once again, I left feeling hungry.
They need to either bulk up their portions or drop their prices. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend anything besides the pizzas. They are tres nummy.
I like Petey the cat, too. Meow!

I'm always in search of a good rueben sandwich and they definitely have one. Good size w/perfect amount of corned beef and sauerkraut. Other food (soups, sandwiches, and salads) are good as well. Nice quiet place for lunch or to meet for a beer after work. Nice people. Espresso drinks are not too good, although better than any where else in the neighborhood... that I know of. Regualr coffee is fine.

Nice Place, Fresh Food, service is a little casual and can be slow if there are too many customers. Pretty good overall for the disappearing neighborhood-style grocery & deli.

Pros: Food Good & Cheap

.

This little places serves fresh salads (try the Winter Pear & Blue cheese) and inventive sandwiches - like the Turkey Peach Chutney, or Brie on Baguette. The sandwich prices run a little high, ($5-6) considering you get nothing but a dill pickle with it. I cannot comment on the breakfast food, although it smells great when I go in to grab a bagel
to go.

However, the service stinks. Even calling ahead doesn't always guarantee a speedy pick up, and during rush they need more than two people working. My espresso today was awful...bitter and lukewarm...and it took the guy nearly 10 minutes to make 2 coffee drinks. (he was flirting with some girl) If it was the first (or second or third) time I've felt neglected, I'd blow it off. But this place seems unaffected by the time constraints that working-class chums like me are forced to abide by.
