I was referred to Dr. Mika at Pearl District Dental by a co-worker and have stayed on as a patient ever since. Her knowledge of cosmetic and restorative dentistry is tops. Dr. Mika and her staff are incredibly friendly and well organized, the appointments are always on time The experiences that I have had with Dr. Mika has been the BEST. I'm so pleased with her that I go to her even though she is out of the network of my insurance. She informs you of what is going on and what needs to be done to makes sure that you are getting the BEST dental care around...Oh did I mention that I come to her Portland office all the way from N. Vancouver?

I came to Pearl District Dental after had neglected my dental care for much longer than I care to admit. At first, I was very uncomfortable about finding a new dentist. Dr Mika's patient reviews as well as the sheer number of reviews spoke volumes to me. In 2007, I finally made the call for an appt. Dr Mika and her staff were very understanding about my nervousness during my first visit. She is an unbelievably gentle dentist who is careful to stay in tune with the patient's needs. If she sees that you might be in the slightest discomfort, she asks how you are doing and if she sees that you need her to stop or give you a break, she does. She is also very particular about the quality of her work. I was getting a crown and when she was placing the crown in place, she wasn't satisfied with how the lab had made it. She ended up sending it back to the lab to have it made again so it fit properly and to her satisfaction. The entire staff is very kind and puts you at ease in a very relaxed atmosphere. I feel like I've been visiting this practice much longer than just under 2 years. During this time, she has worked with me to complete all the necessary work that I needed.
Thanks, Dr. Mika!

Thank you Dr. Miyamoto, for seeing me on your lunch break to take care of my emergency. I don't normally write reviews because it is obvious that anyone can write whatever they want, true or not. But I felt had to write about the great care I have gotten from "Dr. Mika" (as her loving patients call her).
This time around I had an accident at work early in the morning. I got hit on the mouth and two of my front teeth broke and they were jagged and sharp. So I called her office and the receptionist said the day was all full, she put me on hold and then came back to tell me that No Problem, the doctor will see you at noon. What a relief!
So I came in with my broken teeth and she did what she had to do. I am a big chicken when it comes to needles but with Dr. Mika, she is very gentle. She finished taking the molds and sent me back to work with some temporary veneers that looked really good. My staff thought I had the permanents because they looked so good. I told them these were only temporary. So I could get back to work, no problem.
Shortly after that, I went to a periodontist's office to have my teeth cleaned. They marveled at how good her work is. I even had to point it out to the hygienist.
When you are in to see Pearl District Dental, you know this is someone that cares about you. I see how all the rest of her patients give her a big hug when the they come to their appointments. I have referred several friends to her and all have been really pleased. Dr. Mika is the best of the best.

Dr. Mika is the best dentist in Oregon. She is thorough, caring, and has a sweet demeanor. Her office has state of the art equipment for both non cosmetic and cosmetic procedures. I had over 7 fillings and a deep clean from her. ( these procedures were painless). I never had any problems with her dental work (which I had from other dentists). My soon to be orthodontist even complimented my dentists work during my consultation. He noticed how nice the fillings looked in my mouth!!
Her office is clean and comfortable . Her staff is exceptional. You couldn't find a better union of people. I am an extremely difficult patient (I have anxiety and the world's tinyest mouth) and they are very patient and precise.
Dr. Mika and her staff are the best!!!

Phyllis: Dr. Mika placed veneers on my front teeth about three years ago. They look and function as good, actually fantastic, today as they did then. Before I had this done, I went from forcing a smile (and then being embarrassed about it) to smiling constantly. Smiling is really contagious. I'm also noticing that people around me are smiling more. I you have any doubts about your smile, believe me, investing in an improvement is worth every cent.
By the way, I thought the cost was kind of high at first. But, seeing the extra steps Dr. Mika took, it was actually well worth it. One of my co-workers had two veneers placed by her dentist about one year ago, she has chipped her lower teeth three times now. I referred her to Dr Mika. Sure enough, the veneers don't fit well with her bite.

Dr. Mika may be a great dentist, but I would not recommend her for a number of reasons.
First, Dr. Mika suggested extensive treatment to correct my bite, prior to veneers saying it made no sense to do veneers because they would be compromised without correcting the bite. At the time it made sense to me. She also recommended making a new nightguard to replace my inexpensive 'off the shelf' biteguard. This too sounded reasonable. After consulting with Eli, it was obvious that the whole endeavor: treatment, custom nightguard, bleaching, veneers, was going to require a second mortgage on my home, so I decided to consult other dentists.
What I found out was 1) treating my bite was overkill and unecessary to protect veneers (besides, your bite changes every time a new tooth is worked on, 2) her fee for veneers is high and 3) my retail nightguard was sufficient. The other thing I found out is Dr. Mika is the only cosmetic dentist, out of several that I visited, who charges a consult fee. And, this goes for dentists who spent considerable time with me including taking digital photos and a chairside assistant taking notes for the file. Some dental offices even laughed when I asked if they charged a consult fee. Dr. Mika charges $100.
The final issue has to do with insurance coverage. When I made the consult appt, I pointed out that insurance coverage is important, as these are expensive procedures. They assured me that they were 'in my insurance network', and no worries. Days after the appointment, I get a letter from their office that said they no longer were in my insurance company's network (meaning, there would be higher out of pocket expenses for patients). Not only was this a big surprise, since just days earlier they confirmed they were in network, but the way the letter was worded 'we will still submit claims' and 'coverage is still the same' made is sound as though nothing had changed on insurance coverage, when in fact it was a big change for how much patients would have to pay out of pocket.
Bottom line, as beautiful as the office is, which includes a lot of open space with expensive artwork (which I do not care to subsidize), and as nice as staff is, I would not recommend this dentist to anyone UNLESS they don't mind treatment plans that are overkill, have money to burn and they don't mind an office that is less than forthcoming when it comes to information.

I'm less concerned with the ambience and chairside manner of the dentist as I am their proficiency when it comes to cosmetic dentistry--not only the aesthetics but that it lasts. Any dentist can call themselves a cosmetic dentist, with no specific training required, although many general dentists state how they've taken numerous hours of training. But the ultimate proof of skill is in customer satisfaction and/or being an accredited cosmetic dentist with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
Has anyone had porcelain veneers done by Dr. Mika at Pearl District Dental, and if so, what was your experience and has it lasted? Thanks very much

Truly outstanding in all categories. You know you're in good hands when you're so relaxed you can actually nod off to sleep while getting a cavity filled! Dr. Mika has a soft touch and a reassuring professionalism. The quality of the work is excellent - I can barely tell which teeth are the ones that got filled.
I'll definitely be returning to Dr. Mika and I'd recommend her to anyone looking for a dentist.

Dr. Miyamoto-Shemali's work stands out for its superb quality, great aesthetics and phenomenal attention to detail. She is truly an artist. She transforms dental restorations into masterpieces. She is the only dentist in my experience who combines predictability of complex dental treatment with beautiful aesthetic result. This is not a dentist for those who are interested in "patching things up". She has a comprehensive approach to treatment and great patient communication skills. I highly recommend her.
She cared about the end result for me - and made it work. Procedures were timely. Insurance was handled well. All in all - a terrific experience

The entire staff at Pearl District Dental is very professional and friendly. Appointments are always right on schedule and your comfort is extremely important to them. They always have the latest technology and the treatments will be thoroughly explained to you beforehand. Dr. Mika has a gentle chairside manner which removes any stress or anxiety you may have. This is the best dental office I have ever visited.

My husband came home the other day raving about his new dentist - amazing this, fantastic that, wonderful everything. I haven't seen him this excited about anything for a while, so, I decided to give this place a try.
Wow!!! that's all I have to say. From my first phone call, I knew this place would be special. Those of you who've stayed at any 5 Star hotel know what I'm talking about. Delightfully professional, and they've thought about everything, including parking instructions.
Dr. Mika Miyamoto-Shemali was the dentist I saw there and she was incredible. She actually spend about 30 minutes just getting to know me before she even did her exam. And, she actually listened. Her exam was the most thorough I'd experienced and I learned more about my teeth than I have in my previous dental visits. After the exam, she took more time to recap what's going on and to answer my questions. I kinda felt bad for taking so much of her time - but she did not seem to mind at all.
Oh, the clinic is drop-dead gorgeous. My last dentist had all the high tech gizmos too, but the way this clinic is put together is a beauty - lots of light, high ceilings, natural wood everywhere, they even have a small art galler (you can see a virtual tour at www.pearldistrictdental.com)
My husband just got back from having two fillings done there. More raves :) I can't that big time dental chicken actually got enough nerves to go there.. WOW!!!!!
Need a dentist? Go there - it's a no-brainer.

I felt compelled to write a review about the terrific experience my husband and I have consistently had with Pearl District Dental and Dr. Mika Miyamoto-Shemali. We've been going to this clinic for a little over two years. There are few businesses that have my complete loyalty and this is definitely one of them. Everything about this clinic is beautiful/exceptional, the doctor, her chairside manner, her staff, the facilities, the treatment, the equipment, the widespread smiles. I've referred several of my friends and they have called to thank me for this. I am happy to refer her to you.

Dr. Mika Miyamoto has been my general dentist since I moved to Portland six years ago and I couldn't be happier with her work. She has dealt with some very complex restoration challenges, including multiple implant crowns and restoring my entire mouth from old amalgam fillings etc. and done a superb job with inlays and crowns. Her crowning achievement is to replace a crown on my front tooth (I've been told these are the hardest to do) and she did an amazing job. The result is always perfectly matched and natural, and I was involved every step of the way in deciding what to do and when. The cost is on the higher end but well worth it - I once researched it and when you focus on the "difference" it is worth it. Simply put, Dr. Miyamoto is an artist. The staff is professional and supportive, and Marjen is a welcome addition as a dedicated and very competent hygienist. Dr. Miyamoto's work is of the highest quality, and I would recommend her without hesitation to someone who care about high quality work for their teeth.
Wow! There is so much to say about this dentist. You walk into the office and can feel the positive energy. Every member of the staff makes it a priority for you to be comfortable, relaxed, and well cared for. Attention to detail is phenomenal. What makes this office so special is that the doctor and every staff member really make you feel welcome and its very personal. The confidence of each member of the staff is re-assuring and each of the staff is very considerate. As far as the treatment, it is so reliable. Ive had a crown done and it is the best dental experience Ive ever had I knew up front exactly what was going on and the crown feels fantastic goodbye broken down old filling. My wife did Invisalign treatment with them and her teeth are looking awesome. I'm very glad to have made the switch to Dr. Miyamotos office. The work is top notch and only the best. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PORTLAND DENTIST!
I DID NOT SCHEDULE A FOLLOW UP APPOINTMENT!!!This dentist had so many coding errors in billing and issued a very bad mouth guard piece - billed as a full mouth guard on and on- I even reported the issues to ODS! So I had no intention of going back - and had already seen another dentist. All that and they actually billed me for a missed appointment! I had no intention of going back - called them immediately and told them I had already seen another dentist and certainly made no future appt with Mika. They just kept billing - "sent the next 2 bills back as incorrect billing- no appointment made"- -Now I am fed up= over a year later I am still getting a bill for an appointment I never made! This is disrespectful -they are wasting paper and postage. I have reported them to BBB, ODS, and now am writing reviews to let people know they unethical and unprofessional. Good luck if you ever quit going - they will send you a "Bill" reminder. E.
Since I moved to Portland over 5 yrs ago, Dr Mika and her staff have provided me with excellent dental care. I've had my share of dental problems over the years, including invisalign treatment to straighten my teeth and the replacement of old fillings with porcelain crowns, and I have been completely satisfied with the results. Dr Mika is a true expert in the field of dentistry and she will go above and beyond to take care of her patients. Her staff is very friendly, attentive and extremely helpful when it comes to dealing with insurance companies. I know I can trust Dr. Mika and her staff. Thank you Dr. Mika for great results and for restoring my confidence in dentists.
This place is seriously awesome, which feels bizarre to say about a dental office, but they deserve it.
First, the office is extremely modern and clean. The office staff was so friendly and helpful that it is clear customer service is stressed in the office. When I first arrived, I was escorted to a private room where I drank complimentary coffee while I filled out the new patient paperwork.
During my actual cleaning, the hygenist was again extremely nice and went out of her way to thoroughly answer the handful of questions I had about some recent sensitivity. It is obvious that they use very high-tech, new equipment throughout the office and the actual cleaning was done with a new type of electric cleaner (not the manual metal pics) and it took a fraction of the time, probably 25-33% of the time a traditional cleaning takes, but my teeth were definitely just as clean.
When the dentist, Dr. Mika, came by she took the time to thoroughly introduce herself, ask me some questions and genuinely showed interest in my dental care instead of rushing in and out.
Dr Mika has navigated me through an implant procedure that I was initially very anxious about and I'm overjoyed with the results. She and her staff have offered advice and support along the way and I would never have trusted all of this dental work to another dentist
I have already recommended other people to this office and will never go anywhere else!
Dr. Mika Miyamotos office is literally like a state of art experience. First and foremost, Dr. Miyamoto is definitely one of the best dentists in Portland. From the way she performs the procedures and the final success, you can tell her excellence in her field, education and her personal touch in cosmetic work. My husband and I had a few fillings and crowns done; amazing results. Her approach to you as a patient is so relaxing and educative. Her staff also satisfies you with an excellent job on insurance work, explaining the co-pays and procedures cost breakdown. I've been to a few dentists in the Portland area before, but she surely is a pro in her field. I highly recommend her.
Simply put, GO TO THE OREGON BOARD OF DENTISTRY and see the DISCIPLINARY ACTION on 23 Allegations to include "making an untrue statement to the Board". AVOID "The detailed complete workups" that are suppose to include an 1 and 1/2 evaluation with this Dentist. All the pictures, molds, evaluations, and "Special tendon and joint workups" that is suppose to do and YOU DO NOT GET is a farce. AND I FELL FOR IT 2 TIMES. NEVER had an appointment with the Dentist the first time. Just a 22 minute over the front counter of general stuff the Dr. will look at with the evaluation FROM THE DR's Husband who is the office manager. Never got the 3rd one as well as the OFFICE CANCELLED my appts 3X on me, saying they the 1) Dr. had not started my evaluation, 2) She has not coordinated therapy yet for proper evaluation with my orthodontists. Was promised a 3rd time with an appt and they wanted to reschedule that saying "The Dr will work all weekend long while she watches her children" (Husband was in Lebanon, middle east". After this, we canceled the VISA payment as we were getting the run around AGAIN. Now they are trying to obtain payment on something they only produced AFTER I transfered my care to a different Dr's. office. LOOK UP THE BOARD ACTIONS AGAINST THIS DENTIST OVER A GOOD PERIOD OF TIME. 22 Unacceptable Patient Care and 1 Untrue statement to the Board. CONTACT THE BOARD at 971-673-3200 and ask for Inspector Paul if you feel you have had bad treatment, inappropriate billing, or simply paid for treatment that you never received in a timely fashion. Watch how often they put Arestin disks in your mouth, how often they want you to do bitewings and full mouth xrays, and MAKE SURE YOU WATCH HOW THEY BILL YOUR INSURANCE (regular cleaning versus periodontal cleaning versus actual scaling/root planing). She was written up for violations from 2003-2005 and Untruthful Statement to Board on 2005-2007 License Renewal. Bad situation when the office manager is the Dentists' husband and he is the one that promotes the "Specialized tendon/joint manipulation case studies". He should not be the one given you medical information/opinions and also showing other patient's pictures on the computer showing what they can do for you.
I am extremely satisfied with the work Dr. Mika Miyamoto-Shemali did on my teeth. I moved to Portland about one year ago from the Bay area. I came to her office for the first time in pain and discomfort. A San Francisco dentist, a reputable one, had removed my original crowns in a very painful manner and placed temporary crowns incorrectly, leaving me in a lot of pain. Fortunately, I found Dr. Miyamoto-Shemali. She masterfully and painlessly, removed the incorrectly placed temporaries by the former dentist, placed new temporaries, correcting the bite and fitting of the temporary crowns. The pressure and pain in my gums and teeth were immediately gone. I was able to go to lunch after the procedure with my wife and enjoy eating without pain for the first time in months. My wife and I are so happy with Dr. Miyamoto-Shemalis work that we have referred all of our friends and family members to her. The office is beautiful, relaxing, and super clean. The staff are professional and accommodating. My permanent crowns which Dr. Miyamoto-Shemali placed look great and are comfortable. My gums have healed. We highly recommend this SUPER DENTIST to every one. We also saved lots of money by not having gotten implants unnecessarily as was recommend by the former dentist.
Pros: knows what she is doing, very caring, wonderful clinic
Cons: can't think of any
Beware of this dental office. Every dentist is licensed by the governing board of the state in which they practice and this information is available online. Check out what the Board has to say about this dentist. In addition, most places require a day or two advance notice for cancellations. This office loves to make money off of cancelled appointments, even during the winter months when some of us get the flu and have to cancel a dental appointment. This office requires that you know of that impending illness a week in advance or else you are going to be charged a costly fee, even if it is the your first visit. Not even a warning are a review of their office policy. I have found a new dentist and plan to stay away from Pearl District Dental.
Pros: Poor Business Practices
Cons: Poor Dental Practices
My old dentist retired and his replacement was less then stellar. I was forced to find another dentist to finish my treatment plan. I made an appointment with Dr. Mika at Pearl District Dental and was impressed from the minute I met her. She took her time in looking over my teeth and gave me what she thought was the best plan for my mouth. Her treatment plan was 10000 times better then what the old dr suggested (He wanted to remove some of my teeth and give me a partial.) I wasnt comfortable with this but thought it was the only way. When Dr. Mika took a look she said you dont need your teeth removed, lets fill them and thats what we have begun. She's very honest and tells you like it is. When she administed the anestisia I didnt feel a thing and usually after a dentist appt your teeth throb from being worked on, I was shocked that I didnt feel a thing after she was done. I'm actually excited to go to her office and get the work done I needed. You will not be dissapointed.
If you are looking for a drive through dentist who you see for 5 mins and hes gone again then try someone else, but if you are looking for a dentist who truly cares about what she's doing then try Dr Mika. Her Reviews speak for themselves..Thats what caught my eye!!!
Pros: see above
Cons: none I can think of so far
The best complement I can offer is that my brother is a dentist, but I wouldn't even consider making a change. If you go anywhere else, you'll be making a big mistake and miss the chance of a lifetime to be treated at a level unheard of these days . This office is really enjoyable to visit from the front desk to the Hygienist to Dr. Mika. All are personable and take the time to make the experience painless. I knew I was in good hands, but until I had my front teeth crowned, I didn't know how good. I dreaded it based on horrible experience from work done on them by other dentists, but it was a walk in the park and was beautiful work. At my age, I've been to many dentists and none can compare. Such attention to detail and concern for comfort is unheard of. Their was no pain dealing with the business people as well. Eli and Rie were helpful to an extent I haven't experienced in any medical field for any reason. They worked at making the financial arrangements as workable as possible.
And to those who complain about appointment cancellation fee, you may wish to try another clinic like my brother's. He actually tells me he reluctantly likes it when his patients cancel because the other patients that he double or triple booked don't complain about waiting over 30 minutes to see him. In contract, I've never waited more than 5 minutes for an appointment with the hygniest or Dr. Mika.
My job took me to a different country about a year ago. I still come in to Pearl District Dental for my dental care.
Pros: passionate, perfection in dental work
Cons: can't think of any
Every dentist is licenced by the governing board of the state in which they practice and this information is available online. Check out what the Board has to say about your dentist before you put your trust in him or her.
Most places require a day or two advance notice for cancellations. This office is ONE WEEK. Sometimes during the winter months some of us come down w/ seasonal colds that render us unable to sit in a dental chair for a procedure. This office requires that you know of that impending illness a week in advance or else you are going to be HIT with a VERY LARGE cancellation fee. Also, they do it on the FIRST CANCELLED VISIT. Most places give you a warning on the first offense but not Pearl District Dental!
Pros: Nice office space.
Cons: Unreasonable cancellation policy!
I recently moved here here from Chicago I have never seen another dentist. I have seen the same one since I was a kid. My best friend referred me to Dr Mika at Pearl Distrit Dental. I made the call and scheduled an appointment. I was so surprised I felt as if everyone has known me just like my dentist at home. I was so comfortable and all my anxieties washed away. I loved the experience. I called my dentist in Chicago and told him that he had competition. Dr Mika and her entire staff are absolutely MARVELOUS Thanks to my girlfriend and I will be definitely telling my co-workers and whom ever else will listen.
Pros: Treated like family member, excellent service
If you can't make your appt they will charge you a 200 dollar fee even if you make it and cancel it on the same day. Not only was that not addressed to me once when calling to schedule an appt, who mind you has never once been in there, but then they werent even nice about trying to work with me to reschedule. No wonder you have to give your credit card number to them to reserve your spot. I think it is rude and inconsiderate of them to not mention that they would be charging a fee if I couldn't make it from the beggining. I will bad mouth them and never reccomend them ever! I understand it is usual for most places to charge a fee for last min cancelations but considering I am a brand new paitent and had never been in before I think there should have been a waiver or something to say hey this is a one time deal but next time you will be charged. I am mad that I took time to read and review 10 dentist and chose this place and they do that to me. Not far nor nice.
Pros: NONE
Cons: you can't understand them talking to you, 200 dollar fee
Nice staff members, and dentist. Dr Miyamoto-Shemali and her husband. I was a patient at this office when they first opened in the Pearl. They have state of the art equipment. I've had many dentist in my life and found a great one since I left this place. They told me I had 6mm periodontal pockets which I was upset when I found out I was crying on that dental chair. I told her husband Eli the office manager I don't know if he is still the manager. He would talk me out of it and said no I think you should just get the procedure done her. I went to a different doctor come to find out I didn't have 6mm pockets it was like 4mm. And they talked me into replacing my amalgam (silver fillings) for composite (tooth color filings). They try to take advantage of you her and want to make money. Don't ever go to this place. There are way better dentist out there.
I am a proud patient at Pearl District Dental. I researched many dental clinics in Portland prior to my dental exam & I am 200% impressed and pleased to have selected them as my dental clinic of choice. They have by far surpassed my expectations.
I can only say two words to describe my satisfaction...Outstanding work, performed by Dr. Mika and her team!!! I used to hate going to the dentist because of my past experience. However, my perception of dental work has completely changed ever since my first visit in Dr. Mika's office. Great team of professionals, very relaxing and friendly atmosphere, and above all painless service. All the work necessary (which was a lot) was performed with great precision and professionalism. Everything was completed in a timely manner. Dr. Mika even managed to shorten the period to fit in my schedule due to traveling plans I had for the summer. If you are looking for someone that cares about you, your teeth, and your smile Dr. Mika is the right dentist. A perfectionist that will go above and beyond to make sure you are satisfied with your smile.
Pros: Perfectionist, Professional
Dr. Miyamoto-Shemali is fantastic! I actually heard about the practice from citysearch; I was so impressed by her reviews that I had to check it out for myself.
For me, choosing Dr. Miyamoto-Shemali at Pearl District Dental is THE ONLY option. This team is truly passionate about dentistry, and will forever change your outlook on the profession. They are friendly and knowlegeable and will spend time getting to know you, and work with you to exceed your expectations from treatment. I would recommend Dr. Miyamoto-Shemali and her team, to anyone looking for a dentist. You will not regret this decision.
I have had the following procedures done in the past few months, and couldnt be happier):
- 4 fillings (tooth color for cosmetic appearance)
- Whitenting
- Crowns: 2 upper front teeth
Also, to give you an idea of the caliber of dentist that Dr. Miyamoto-Shemali is; she has recently been chosen among to top dentists in the US to be a visiting faculty member for one of the top post-graduate dental schools in the world. This is quite an honor to be selected from thousands candidates across the country!
Having said that, she is so much into improving her skills through continuing education that she seems to be gone a lot. I had one instance when I needed to have some urgent work done and she was out of state for a class. Her staff referred me to another dentist in the area who was also top-notch and he worked closely with Dr. Miyamoto-Shemali to take care of my problem.
Pros: Caring, attention to detail, excellent results
Cons: Limited hours (due to taking classes)
Dr. Mika at Pearl District Dental is the best dentist you will find! I have been seeing her for about five years now. She is the best dentist I've been to. She is very attentive to detail and the comfort level of the patient. She definitely goes above and beyond most dentists I have seen previously.
Level of work: Dr. Mika is an artist. She has done a lot of work on my mouth and everything not only functions and works the same or much better than before, but I love the way my teeth look afterward. She has replaced quite a few of my ugly black fillings. Now it is a pleasure to smile and I don't hate looking at my teeth every time I brush or floss (I still don't do that as often as Dr. Mika would like) .
Seating time: Never waited more than one or two minutes for my appointment to begin. Once you start, they are excellent and keeping you informed during the entire appointment.
Atmosphere: Amazing. Not only does the place look like a magazine cover, but it is very clean and well kept. In my opinion, this reflects on the level of care and sterilization. Though I never felt decor was that important in a dental clinic - I never knew the difference till I had emergency work in another clinic while I was travelling. What a difference. I think I am spoiled now.
Staff: Dr. Mika's office team has gone to great lengths to ensure that you are comfortable from the moment you walk into the office until the moment you leave. What a treat. They even call you at home after your appointment just to make sure everything feels right as the numbness wears off.
Insurance: My insurance coverage has changed over the years, and sometimes it has not been very good. But I prefer to just foot the bill during those times because some things you can't put a price on.
Overall, you won't find a dentist or doctor in Portland that has the committment to customer service like Dr. Mika does. I would - and do - recommend her to anyone I know!
Dr. Mika's office is literally like a state of art experience. First and foremost, Dr. Mika is definitely one of the best dentists in the Portland area. Pros: Educate me about oral health, professional
Cons: Limited hours
Having made the rounds through several dentists in Portland and other cities, I wanted to write a review showing my unconditional support to the folks at Pearl District Dental.
Dr. Mika's work stands out for its superb quality, great aesthetics and phenomenal attention to detail. She's truly an artist who transforms dental restorations into masterpieces. She is the only dentist in my experience who combines predictability of complex dental treatment with beautiful aesthetic result. This is not a dentist for those who are interested in "patching things up". She has a comprehensive approach to treatment and great patient communication skills.
Her hygienist, Marjan is a gift of a hygienist. Thorough, gentle, comprehensive, and nurturing (rather than condescending.) I've never had a hygienist spend so much time with me during my visits.
The rest of the staff will bend backwards to make sure you're comfortable and accommodated for. I find them among the best dentally educated staff I've come across.
Pros: Best treatment possible, High level of education
This is a fancy-looking place and it lives up to it's appearance - the people here want to charge your for every penny you have. They want to stick you with a mouthguard or invisalign immediately. The mouthguard was ill-fitting and the assistant couldn't fit it properly - dropped the measuring device on the floor - and got the paste into my hair. The dentist had to fix it later. The receptionist wasted my time - 40 minutes - explaining what the mouthguards do. This should've been explained by the dentist. The dentist took expensive X-rays, then did not tell me the results of them. I went here 4 or 5 times, hoping the dentist would help me with my issues. Instead, I was constantly told I had to come back again to have questions answered. I went to a different dentist after paying out to this place who was horrified by the condition of my teeth - instead of getting help from Pearl Dental, my teeth began deteriorating under the pressure of night grinding. All in the matter of months. What did I pay this place for? They couldn't solve my problems, so stick to simple cleanings here, but take serious issues elsewhere.
Pros: Example: best croissants in town
Cons: see review
I had not seen a dentist for many years before a friend recommend Pearl District Dental. My teeth and gums were not in good condition, but Dr. Miyamoto was extremely friendly, supportive, thorough and non-judgmental. She discussed several treatment alternatives with me, and now, a year later, I have completed most of the necessary work. I was pleasantly surprised by the advances in technology since I last visited the dentist.
I am saddened now that I have to leave this clinic since I've been transferred overseas (anyone know a good dentist in China?)
Dr. Miyamoto and her staff could not have been more professional and everyone in the office is extremely friendly. They spend time during an initial visit instructing you in good dental care, and I found that very useful. She and her staff also explain what they are doing during procedures. Also, having spent considerable amount of time with Marjan, the hygienist, she is a most wonderful soul and an excellent hygienist.
Pros: Thorough, Caring, Provides treatment alternative, best hygienist
Cons: parking
Pearl District Dental is definitely the lux dental office in the area. The feel is like a day spa and Mika's chair side manner is informative, friendly, and relaxing. The staff is very friendly as well and works carefully with insurance and payment plans. Like everything luxury, the cost is a bit higher than average though. If you can afford to pay for a more comfortable trip to the dentist, this is your place.
Pros: More comfortable than you'd ever expect a trip to the dentist to be.
Cons: $$$
Dr. MIka is the best dentist I have ever gone to. I work in health care and am quite picky when it comes to doctors. Whether I've seen Dr. Mika for a standard cleaning or for more complicated procedures, she has always provided top quality care. She is truly an amazing artist.
Dr. Mika is extremely skilled and pays much attention to detail. She does fantastic work and is very careful and patient.
You can't go wrong with choosing Dr. Mika as your dentist!
I promise a wonderful experience.
Pros: World-class dentistry, excellent chairside manner puts you at ease, extremely thorough
Cons: Pricey, but you get what you pay for
I recently had a bite plate made for me by Dr. Shemali. She recommended that I have one made after a recent cleaning. I have had severe headaches and strain around my entire jaw area which would not go away, even during the day. The amount of discomfort I had been living with for the last 10 years was driving me nuts. I have tried various remedies including acupuncture, Tylenol's, and a full mouth bite plate (made for me by another dentist). None helped. The specialized plate that Dr. Shemali made for me covers my front teeth only - and keeps my back teeth from touching - I wear it at night while I sleep. I can not tell you how nice it is to not wake up with a headache and pain. This little 'device' has literally made my year!! The entire office at Pearl District Dental is the best dental establishment I have ever been too. The environment and treatments are second to none, I would highly recommend this dental office to everyone I know. And for anyone suffering with the pain due to teeth clenching - the investment of the bite plate is MORE THAN WORTH IT!!!!! Due yourself a favor and go see Dr. Shemali.
If you want to be made to feel like failed devices are your fault by the receptionist when you've already been told that the problem was technical [poor adhesive in my case] then go here. If you want to be quoted a price for a future visit and then be made to feel that you are being deceitful when you ask that you be charged the price you were quoted, then go here. And if you want to worry about being charged $125 [$40 if they find a replacement] because you are called out of town right before an appointment and have to cancel less than a week in advance, then by all means, go here.
Otherwise, try another dentist. I certainly will.
And i am very suspicious of any place that gets so many five star reviews. Honest reviews generally show a nice bell curve, not all fives with a few lower ratings.
Pros: Attractive Office
Cons: Too many to list
I am a hygienist who has works on a temp basis (by choice) for dental clinics throughout Portland. I recently had the privilege to work for a few weeks at Pearl District Dental - their prior hygienist had retired. Having worked at well over one hundred clinics in the Portland area over the last few years, there is no doubt in my mind that this is the best clinic of the bunch....And by far. Allow me to share my thoughts:
I knew this clinic would be different from the minute I walked thru the doors on my first day - you can tell that there's a certain pride of ownership that is sorely lacking in most other clinics. The design, the layont, the smells, the music, and the equipment are next to none.
Dr. Mika and her staff spent a considerable amount of time with me before I even saw my first patient. Their message to me was to take care of patients in the best manner possible and to take no short cuts. Dr. Mika even requested I wear magnifying glasses so I can do a better job in cleaning teeth. Everyone stressed the importance of respecting patients' preference for care and even had each patient fill out a brief form to indicate their preferences for the day's visit. Dr. Mika even provided me with my own assistant so we can maximize the amount and effectiveness of time I have available with each patient.
I found Dr. Mika's patients to be among the most dentally educated (thanks to consistent patient education by Dr. MIka and her staff. I also found them to have the best gum health. Dr. Mika is very consciencious about this. I was also very impressed by the dental work (fillings, crowns) that was done on all the patient's teeth. Believe me, having looked at thousands of teeth, I can tell quality work and Dr. Mika does top notch work.
Lastly, each employee geniunely cares about delivering the best care possible. The teamwork there was incredible.
This is the clinic I would choose to take care of me an my family.
Pros: Patients are first, top notch work
I made an appt solely based on these reviews, so I probably had higher expectations than I should have. The office is very pretty. But the technicians are always temps and I find myself wondering why they can't keep staff. One even bonked me in the head with the Xray machine and then told me she was still in school. The hygienist is very nice. But I'm not seeing the 5-stars and I wonder where all of these accolades are coming from. I've never been offered headphones or a DVD. I've never been offered warm towels. And it seems like they are always calling me to reschedule for one reason or another. They are very nice, but I don't think they are 5-stars. Maybe 3.5, 4 on a good day.
I moved to Portland five years ago and just never got around to finding a new dentist. All that waiting and a bunch of old fillings meant trouble. I woke up one morning in excruciating pain and needed to find a dentist quickly. I searched the Internet and found this page with all these awesome reviews of Dr. Miyamoto-Shemali, so I called up her office.
The office staff were very friendly and had me come in right away. That morning, she referred me to an endodontist, who was incredible, and I returned to him soon after to continue my treatment. When I returned to Dr. Miyamoto, she gave me two amazing crowns, so good that no one would ever know they're not my own teeth. At one point, she sent me to the nearby lab to have them touched up a little bit so they'd be an exact match. The office is very high tech and the procedure was painless! Her commitment to detail is only surpassed by her obvious talent and love for what she does.
Dr. Miyamoto was never anything but positive and downright friendly. I love her office, it doesn't feel like a dentist office at all. The fact that you're watching a movie while getting work done is a welcome distraction. Her staff is downright stellar; each and every one of them are sincerely nice people!
By the way, I noticed a couple of reviews that aren't complimentary. I encourage you to read through the words carefully. Some people just like to complain.
Pros: Very thorough, extremely gentle, excellent work
I have had many, many dentists in my time (I move around a lot) and though I agree with the reviews about Dr. Mika's bedside manner and the dentist office itself being quite nice, I can't fully recommend this dentist. My last cleaning with them was all of 15 minutes long and not well done at all. The splint I got doesn't fit and I think it was because the impression they took wasn't good enough- which in itself wouldn't be too much of a problem except that it helped splinter my tooth. The bleaching trays were badly made and leak bleaching goo into my mouth so I can't use them anymore, and the last apt. I had with them they estimated that I had such extensive damage as to warrant incredibly expensive oral surgery followed by even more dental work, both in office and out. After seeking out other opinions (all of which were consistently opposed to the verdict of surgery- and defenitely opposed to the dental work that would follow) I finally found a better dentist, but I was fairly traumatized after that ordeal. I've realized over the years that some dentists are trigger happy and a little more excited to fill your mouth with gold, but after all I've been through (and believe me, it's been a lot) I just appreciate conservative dentistry so much more. Anyone can make the dentistry experience easier through watching dvd's and playing soothing music, but the quality of the experience for me lies in the skill of the dentist and the techs they hire. This office isn't bad, but I'd be wary when they start listing what you need done.
Pros: Office is nice
Cons: better dentists elsewhere
If you want the best dental care, the best equipment, the most realxing atmosphere, and the friendliest staff Pearl Dental is the place for you. Just be prepared to pay for it. If you are looking for a cheap cleaning, go elsewhere.
Pros: Beautiful office, great people, the best equipment and a very proactive approach to dental care
Cons: pricey - even with insurance
I've been meaning to leave these long overdue comments about Pearl District Dental. I chose Pearl District Dental based on reviews that I read thru CitySearch a bit over a year ago. I live in Gresham, and quite frankly would not have stumbled across such a great clinic had it not been for the great reviews I read about it in CitySearch.
Dr. Mika Miyamoto-Shemali (Dr. Mika for short) is the type of dentist who will listen and help you in anyway she can. She has high value of professionalism, very caring, kind hearted and very intelligent. I've had other talended dentists in the past, but, none listened to me as and communicated my options any where near the way Dr. Mika does. The staff (from the front desk to the assistants), are very caring, highly skilled, and well trained. The office is very up to date with the technology. It is equipped with a digital x-ray, an intraoral camera, and the cerec which i call "the magic machine". I had a tooth that was bothering me for so many years. The filling kept on breaking, but Dr. Mika did a ceramic bonded restoration which they call an onlay on that problem tooth i have. Since then i never had any problems with that tooth. Guess what? I went home with my permanent restoration in my mouth. That cerec machine is truly an amazing piece of equipment. You never have to be sent home wearing a temporary filling or a temporary crown. I am so happy and satisfied.
Thank you Dr. Mika and staff. You're the greatest!
You Portlanders have a gem of dentist to go at Pearl District Dental. I?m from Arizona and have been going to the same dentist for well over 20 years. On a recent trip to Portland, I developed severe sensitivity on one tooth. Since I didn?t know any one in Portland, I called a few clinics to see who can get me in and, more importantly, who I could trust. I was impressed by the receptionist at Pearl District Dental the most. He not only seemed to be the most knowledgeable, but also the most sympathetic and caring. He even offered to make an appointment for me at another clinic since they could not see me during the evenings. So, I decided to make an appointment there.
When I walked through their door, I was treated like a long-time patient. Dr. Mika Miyamoto-Shemali was the epitome of caring and professionalism. She expertly diagnosed the source of my problem and was very thorough in explaining my options and risks. Again, she was totally sympathetic to my situation and offered to work with my dentist in Arizona if I chose to have the work done there or to make room in her schedule to take care of my immediate needs.
Needless to say, I was so impressed with the clinic that I decided to take care of my problem there. During the second appointment, I was again treated exceptionally well. I used to think my dentist was the most gentle dentist around, but Dr. Mika?s gentle hand quickly changed my mind. She was amazing. To cap things off, the clinic contacted me two days before my departure date to make sure everything was ok before I headed back to Arizona.
I will be staying with my current dentist since I have been there for so long, but, I can honestly say, in 20 years of working with him, I?d never received anything close to this type of caring and wonderful treatment. Portland, consider yourself lucky to have access to this clinic.
Pros: Extremely caring, thorough, top notch work
Cons: not in Arizona
I think everyone looks for a kindhearted, trustworthy dentist. However, finding a good dentist can sometimes take years. Luckily, I found my dentist.
Dr. Mika has been taking great care of my teeth for one year now and I will not see another dentist. She cares about the long term care of her patients and takes time to listen. Her staff is friendly, professional, and absolutely wonderful. And, I don't think I've every waited more than 5 minutes to see Dr. Mika or the hygienst.
Pros: Skill, chairside manner, cares about me first
Cons: Can't think of any
When it comes to dentistry work, I agree Dr Mika is doing a nice job: she is very gentle, explaines you what she is doing, top of the line equipement , great "chair-side" manners etc Although I am not totally convinced that she is not overpriced.
But please be aware when it comes to specialty work- periodontal or orthodontic work! I ask you to seek a specialist`s second opinion in these matter ! Spare your precious time and money by asking a periodontist, oral surgeon or orthodontist to tell you what is the appropriate management for your problem.
Pros: good dentist
Cons: in non dentistry matters-always seek a second opinion
I felt compelled to write a review about the terrific experience my husband and I have had with Pearl District Dental and Dr. Mika Miyamoto-Shemali. We've been going to this clinic for over two years now. There are few businesses that have my complete loyalty and trust and this is one of them. I have referred several of my friends and they have called to thank me for the referral. I am happy to refer her to you.
Pros: Thorough, options explained to me, smiles everywhere
I felt compelled to write a review about the terrific experience my husband and I have consistently had with Pearl District Dental and Dr. Mika Miyamoto-Shemali. We've been going to this clinic for a little over two years. There are few businesses that have my complete loyalty and this is definitely one of them. Everything about this clinic is absolutely beautiful/exceptional, the doctor, her chairside manner, her staff, the facilities, the treatment, the equipment, the widespread smiles.
I also want to mention something about Dr. Mika's skills and integrity as a dentist. With every visit, she has consistently added a new dimension to my understanding of my teeth and oral health. I also admire the fact that this is a dentist who practices what she preaches. She is continually pursuing advanced training with a vigor that's way beyond what other practitioners seek (I know since I'm a physician as well) Although recently it's been hard to get appointments with her since she's been taking so many classes, I know my husband and I will benefit.
Over the last few months, I've referred several of my friends and they have called to thank me for this. I am happy to refer her to you.
For years, I've had a problem with headaches that have been getting worse. The best my MD's could do is pain medication. My dentist Dr. Mika suspected this may have to do with my bite and it made sense. I had teeth that kept chipping or grinding down, pain in the jaw from clenching. I've been undergoing therapy with her and I feel a hundred times better. I can actually smile more easily. She's been truly heaven sent. I really couldn't rate Dr. Mika and her staff more highly. This office is ultra-modern and not threatening in the least for people who are frightened of the dentist's chair. Both she and her staff are very friendly and reassuring and listened to my concerns before the treatment. Highly recommended
Pros: Highly Proficient, I come first
