I had been here about 4 years ago and a few times prior and enjoyed it. I recently moved back to the area and wanted to go to Todai because I remember liking it. Well... it was nothing like I remember it. The sushi was dry... really dry. The other food wasn't exceptional either. I tried it again a little more recently to give them the benefit of the doubt... maybe it was just a bad day... NOPE... still not good. I'm very disappointed. I used to love this place and now I will never go back.

I've paid a lot less for better.

Pros: friendly service

Cons: food

This is quite possibly the worst place I have ever eaten. Most of the food was unappealing and the sushi looked like the throw-away parts from another sushi restaurant.

If you are brave and want to go try it out ask to go look (closely) at the offerings before getting seat. Then run! Go Spend about the same amount and get a fair amount of fantastic sushi at Sinju in Bridgeport Village in Tigard.

Itadakimasu!

I have to say that Todai most certainly DID NOT meet or even come close to standards when it comes to downtown dining. Not only was the food cold but the service was terrible and it was extremely over crowded and smelled horrid. The crab was cold and had no flavor, as well as almost every single other dish that was served in the buffet. I was incredibly embarrassed to be seen in this establishment. I felt disgusted with the lack of customer service I was met with when I tried to inform them that they were charging an EXTREMELY HIGH PRICE for the EXTREMELY POOR QUALITY of food. Between the loud party of 25 next to us and the tone in the managers voice, he could care less about the fact I told him I would not be coming back.
If you enjoy spongy dry deserts and overpriced low quality sushi mixed with an atmosphere of anguish and dissatisfaction than Todai may be for you.
The minuscule 10% they offered to take off our steep 60$ bill will stand precedent in the fact I will NEVER be returning to this "restaurant".

I'll start off by saying that I woke up sick the next morning and lost a few pounds the hard way.

We should have trusted our instincts about the poor quality of food but we were hungry and it was very expensive so we wanted to feel like we were getting our money's worth. Unfortunately I got more than my money's worth.

I have spent a lot of time in China and Todai replicates the food quality you would find there. Real chinese/japanese food means they use every part of the animal and cook it in tons of grease. Todai doesn't use white meat chicken breast because its more expensive than the dark meat. For what you pay at this place you are getting robbed.

Two days later (and 3 hours in Urgent Care) and I am finally starting to feel better.

I went to have a birthday dinner with my family and we traveled 2 hours to get there. I was very disappointment with the buffet. The hot entrees all tasted the same, yuck. The sushi was all mushed together and had no taste. The only thing that was good there was the water I drank and the udon. Its really hard to mess up udon. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. The price was sky high for the low quality grade food. The clown there was scary.

Todai isn't all that great.
The food Is good.
But not Really Really Great.
For the quality of food you get, it's pretty expensive.
It is good for families and birthday gatherings.
But all in all - there are plenty of better restaurants.
Maybe not all in one place..
still..

Every time I go to Todai, I regret going to a buffet (eating too much), but I find myself going at least once a month. Great selection of food and great for the family. I recommend Todai to everyone.

Our family enjoys the different deals they offer. The free meal on your birthday is good but we usually go on Thursdays when our kids eat free... the sign says they also are free on Tuesdays but we have never been. The kids like the sushi and different cakes for dessert. Some days there is a clown who makes balloon animals! My wife and I like the crab (endless amounts!) and we also like to have a bowl of the soup they make for you. We always love the food and the waiters are always friendly as well. There is a large crowd which means it can be kind of noisy. We try to go early to avoid the crowd. The restaurant is easy to find inside Pioneer mall and don't forget... they validate your parking at Smart park!

Let me say that my husband and I used to looove this place. However, it has really lost it's appeal! We dined there tonight for a free birthday dinner and we left VERY disappointed. We arrived at the restaraunt at 8:50 and they closed at 9:30 we figured we would have enough time to eat and enjoy our meal. We were rushed the entire time, they wanted to cash out our bill @ 9:00 and started pulling food and cleaning up at 9:20. We had to ask repeatedly for them to restock sushi and crab. They never ended up stocking the sushi because it "got too late." We never saw our waitor/waitress (who were busy cleaning and refilling soy sauce containers) and we ended up filling up our own water refills.

The quality of the food was mediocre. The sushi was mushy and loosely wrapped. There was not much variety. The hot food was barely warm and everything tasted chewy and old.

We will not be going there again...even for a free birthday dinner. Next time we'd rather go to Sushiville or Sushi Land instead!

This place used to be great... well me and my Husband went there recently on his birthday for dinner and it was a joke. The sushi seemed to be okay but the rest of the food seemed over cooked and greasy. Years past experience the food was fresher and didn't have that over cooked heat lamp look. I used to love their tempura, but this time it was all mushy and looked as if it was cooked in very old oil.

Even with the birthday "discount" our dinner still ended being $42.00 not to mention he got seriously sick afterward about 1:00am after dinner he was really sick. I called the restaruant just to let Manager know that my husband had came down getting sick after eatting some of the food that I didn't eat and he (Steve) totally acted unconcerned, unsympathic and tried to brush me off with free dinner comp tickets.

(BLECH!! NO THANKS)

Cons: bad food, WAY over priced

The perk of this place is that you get a free dinner in your actual birthday, and free is a good thing. Yes, the food selection is large, but not large in a tasty way. A LOT of the food looks and tastes as though it has been sunbathing under the heat lamps for a while. The crab and shrinp island is pretty good. The crab is pretty big but often times a bit dry. There is a ridiculously small selection of actual sushi and it is nothing spectactlar in my opinion. Nothing that bursts in your mouth and does the grasshoppah hah-cha. The "hot side" where all the hot food is kept, is a cornacopia of greasy fried fish, oily noodles, gelatinous sauce-covered "things" and a scant amount of actual vegitarian options. Kudos to the crape station though. Lots of yummy selections. The dessert section is rather wierd. When is jello an Asian dessert?? The best is the creme brule....which of course is usually always completely depleted. The little petite cakey things are flavorful, but they do have an odd "gel" quality that makes you wonder if you will need a but of fiber afterwards. Thank goodness they serve beer and wine here. Asian plum wine is potent and helps you get this stuff down. All in all, I dont really think the dinner prices are worth the quality of food they serve.

If you want bad food and high prices this is your place. They say that they have 40 different types of sushi, well that?s a lie. I went there this Saturday for a friend?s birthday, and I will never go back. I read some of the reviews on here before I went and I thought, well I will try it, it can?t be that bad. I like to consider myself an almost expert on sushi, so I figured it was most likely people who had not done a lot of sushi before, Boy was I wrong. The only good thing about this place was that the service people were fairly nice. The soda tasted old, and the sushi was not fresh. I love mackerel, but the mackerel here was very dry. The only good thing they had to eat there was the tempura shrimp. The prime rib was dry and old, and the crab legs were not very good at all. And the dessert was a little odd. The bottoms of all the cakes were made out of some sponge material. Needless to say if they only cost like $8.00 for dinner instead of $27.00 I still would not go back.

My boyfriend and I went to todai for Valentines day, excited to eat some sushi. I've been here couple times before, and never found a problem with the restaurant until today. We made reservations a while back, but when we came, they stuck us in a crappy place. Someone came and took our drink order, gave us drink and we never saw the server again. They were out of a lot of food, the crab tasted like awful (like crumbling apart because it was so dry), ran out of creme brulee early on and did not get more. We asked another server for a refill, never saw her again either. I understand that it's a buffet and that great service should not be expected, however, I was appalled that no one even came to clean up our plates or ask how we were doing. I don't understand why they expect to be tipped if they give such horrible
service. I will never go there again. ALSO, they charged a "holiday" price for valentines day, and didn't even bother telling anyone... Umm, since when is valentines day a "holiday?"

I went to Todai 5 years ago with my family who are seafood eaters. They enjoyed the variety and freshness of the food. This year that was not the case. Contrary to what is listed on their website, Todai no longer serves lobster and a variety of other items. This was the only reason our family drove to Downtown, Portland and payed for $5 at the parking garage. They did not have the selection you would expect and the non-seafood dishes were borderline 'gross.' We tried a few things but were so disgusted that we stopped mid-bite. The food they did have looked unappetizing and my family was forced to sit and eat because of how much we were paying. The price is ridiculous compared to what you're getting. Unless you like sushi and dessert, don't go here. I would suggest you take your $20 and treat yourself and a friend at either Beaverton or Hillsboro's China Moon. Now that's a buffet.

I have been going to Todai for 3 years. The service has been consistently good and the food is always tasty. As a business owner I have found this to be a wonderful place to take clients. It offers a variety of Japanese sushi to sample and other asian foods. Although this is not a place I would recommend for ambience, the variety is wonderful for a large group that may have different food preferences. I recommend this restaurant to any seafood lover! I taken many clients, friends and family to this restaruant and every single on has loved it and returned for more. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The first time I went there three years ago, the sushi was excellent. The second time a few months later, it was frozen solid. And subsequent visits over the last few years have been anywhere between sub-par to just ok. I had a particular fondness for the creme brulee dessert cups, but the last time I went, the cups were replaced with a large pan that you were supposed to just scoop your portion out of (and it fell apart and made a big runny mess). Like the reviewer before me stated, this place is definitely quantity over quality, and over the past few years, I haven't been impressed with the changes. It's disappointing for me because the Todai near Chicago is excellent, so I know just how good this place can be. Sadly, the Portland location seems to be going steadily downhill and I haven't returned since my last and probably final visit last August.

Having just gone there yesterday I have to say that the food was decent but this place failed to shine in any other respect. It is expensive, the atmosphere is poor (mall), the service was fair (friendly but sparse). Just generally not worthwhile, particularly at over $25 per person for dinner.

This is the place to go if you want to gorge on seafood but I've had far better meals in this town for way less money in more interesting locations. Basically this is the place that goes for quantity over all else but even as a big eater I didn't feel like I got my moneys worth from the meal. Having not gone to an all you can eat buffet since being a teen ager the joys of gluttony are no longer as apparent to me. If you want to eat until bursting with little thought on anything else great but otherwise forget it.

As for the the food it was decent. The crepes where fun, some of the salads were good. The seafood was acceptable quality. The fruit and desserts were lack luster and not worth eating. I had some tasty mushroom fried rice but I've had good fried rice meals for $10-12 else where that were better, and served in more interesting locations.

The fact they don't validate parking in the malls ramp only added insult to injury, they do validate for smart park but you have no way of knowing this before hand. The staff apoligized for this and blamed the management who did nothing. I guess they think all you can eat is enough of a virtue, and for some dinners well into their 3rd or 4th plate it may be but for others, look elsewhere.

So on the whole just don't bother. It wasn't that the experience was terrible it was just at the end of the meal I felt like "what? I paid for this? why?" I didn't find the food as offensive as some have but this place is a poor value, go to the sushi-go-round and escape for about half the price with a similar quality meal. And you get to avoid the mall...

I went to Todai last Saturday night for the first time and I have to say it's the best Japanese buffet I've ever been to. I don't eat sushi personally but they had more than enough appetizing entrees to satisfy a non-sushi eater. Including delicious prime rib, fresh king crab legs, teriyaki chicken, oysters, fresh and sweet, and more desserts than I could dream of. And the cheesecakes they serve are hands down the best in Portland. Todai has such a fun and inviting environment too so it's great for families, with fun characters decorating the walls and ceiling for kids to enjoy and a flat screen TV for the dads. And the prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food. All in all I was very pleased with the whole experience. I am definately going to go back again!

We went in search of all-you-can-eat sushi, and ended up at Todai because it appears to be the only place in Portland to find it. In retrospect, we would have been better off eating a plastic box of sushi from the Safeway deli. If you're looking for quantity rather than quality, this is the place for you. Served buffet-style and located in a mall, Todai offers an array of sushi rolls and assorted other Asian foods (egg rolls, tempura, yakisoba noodles), all of which are mediocre and seem to have been sitting around for hours. Lunch costs about $17 per person. It does not seem physically possible to eat enough of this food to justify paying that much for lunch. (Unless you're really hungry for warm sashimi and rolls that are made with lots of fillers like fake crab and mayonaise.) The service was also lacking--though we were seating promptly, we had to wait ten minutes after we started eating to get a drink, by which point our eyes were watering and our mouths burning from the wasabi. The sushi was tasteless, the egg rolls and tempura mushy, and the only redeeming part of the meal was the ice cream machine and the fact that they validated our parking. Anyone who has ever eaten good (or even decent) sushi will be thoroughly disappointed by this dining experience.

Pros: Validated parking

Cons: Everything else

.

This place is disgusting. I went there for the first time today and was totally unimpressed by the food, service, and atmosphere. In fact, the food was so bad that my boyfriend ate six bites and gave up. I kept eating just to make it worth spending so much freaking money, and then paid for it on the ride home, when I spent the whole time thinking I was going to be sick.

The only reason I went was because of the positive ratings it got on here. I just re-read the reviews and can't believe that ANYONE would give this place such high ratings. Either these people have no tastebuds or someone is paying them good money to write glowing reviews. I used to live near Reno and went to all-you-can-eat sushi there many times; it was nothing like this. The fish at this place is not fresh, the rolls taste weird, and some of the plates at the buffet still had food stuck to them from the previous diners. The only thing worthwhile in the whole joint is the soft-serve ice cream machine.

If you want good sushi, STAY AWAY from here! What a total waste of time and money. (P.S. I wouldn't even go back for the free birthday meal. You couldn't pay me to eat here again.)

I'm a big fan of heavy servings and lots of decsisions. Todai offers you both with a wide variety of sushi dishes, hot main entrees, and even snow crab legs during dinner hours. The atmosphere is very family friendly, it's located at the top floor of the Pioneer Square Mall.

Cons: All in all pretty good value but with a dinner for two it can be pricey for a buffet.

.

If you like all you can eat buffets, then you'd like this place. But there's a reason it's priced as low as it is, and that's because the food is just average at best. Some of the fish tasted funny, and I asked a busperson about it: his response was, just eat something else, there's plenty to choose from. For the same amount of money you can have a really good meal somewhere else, you just can't have twenty courses.

If you want Japanese sushi, crablegs, oysters in a buffet style, then Todai is for you. All the convenience of self serve but with a good sushi, and other Japanese specialties. The Sashimi was very fresh. At the end ofyour meal they have creme puffs, creme Boulee', key lime pie.... Dinner may run $25 per person but if you eat the right stuff... it is a bargain.

This is the best place to go on your actual birthday. You eat for free on your birthday and it is all you can eat so fill up. This place features great sushi, seafood and more.

My fiance and I went to Todai on Thursday night and it was not crowded! It was perfect casual place to eat after shopping. Many food items to choose from. I am a seafood lover so I enjoyed those piles of shrimp, crab legs, oysters and calamari.
As for sushi, it was not the best. If you want good sushi for good price, come to Sushi Land in Vancouver, WA.
Desserts were okay, they are cut into tiny pieces, which I found very cute.

Todai charges outrageously for the quality of the food. I mean, all you can eat is fine for some, but I didn't want to eat a whole lot of what was offered. The sushi was warm and the salads and hot dishes were mostly boring and bland. The crepes were a very strange addition, but tasted okay. Each person's meal costs $25.95, and for that you could take yourself out to a real sushi or seafood restaurant and eat like a king. The dining area is loud and boisterous, so don't go if you're looking for a quiet dinner. You can do better than this place, take your money elsewhere.

Todai is an excellant place to eat! Professional handling of sushi and the cooked food remarkably well done. The only thing I caught wrong is that if you drink your drink too fast, servers will show up slightly late for your refill, so its best to have 2 drinks so you won't have to wait and suffer of thirst when finished drinking your drink (pepsi, water, alcohol, etc) although what do you expect when everytime Ive been here it was busy. A good type of busy that is.

Overall, for $15 its worth it! Eat all you can

The dinner runs 25-30 dollars, but bring a friend on your birthday and you both eat for the price of 1 person. A great value as compared to a fairly good value otherwise. The custom crepes on the far right are a great unexpected addition, as well as custom sushi and more exotic items if you request them. Also the desert bar has 10+ items everytime and they are small portions so you could actually try them all, and they are all delicious. PS. bring your own seasoned rice vinegar for the sushi as they don't have any available. Also ask for extra napkins up front as it is hard to find your waittress after you get your drinks.

Pros: Great Selection, All You Can Eat, Birthday Special

I like this place because it has various food you can select. Although the quality compare to other is not that great but still worth to go with friends. The menu for lunch and dinner are different. I prefer to go at lunch time as I don't like seafood much and you need to pay more that that.

BTW don't miss dessert they are so good!

The service was good, but not much explaining of where the buffet started, or that it was separated by hot and cold foods. Luckily, some of the members of our 10 person group had been there before and summed it up for us before we got up there. The food was excellent, however. There is so much to choose from and we had the chance to try almost everything. At first we did falter at the $23.95 per person price, but think about it: On a date, you probably spend around $20-$25 per person with dinner, desert and drinks. So, the price isn't all that bad, and you can choose your drink, all the seafood you can imagine and a variety of dessert dishes.

I have a weird fear of buffets: something about germs, and people touching the food that I'm going to eat really bug me. I won't do the buffet thing anywhere--even Vegas--except for Todai. The seafood isn't exceptional, but it's very good, and the selection is unparalleled. A limitless supply of Dungeness crab legs, woo-hoo! There's also a crepe bar, made-to-order stir fry, fresh fruit, and an ingenious dessert bar (one- and two-bite sizes of tiramu, cheesecakes, etc., etc., so that way you can try everything and not overload!). The best time to go is on your birthday, because you'll get a meal FREE as long as you have your ID.

I admit - I am not a big fan of the buffet. I think it is a way of offering a lot of mediocre food for more money than you want to spend. I would rather have one great dessert than bites of 40 mediocre ones. This is exactly what we got. We arrived right when they opened. There were literally 75 people waiting to go inside. We thought it must be good. Alas, no. Sushi was only fair. Salads were okay. Teppenaki - selection of vegetables was pathetic. The lobster was mythical. Oh, there was lots of crab legs, which takes more calories to open than it gives. Desserts were less then okay. It reminds me of an old saying if you can't dazzle them with brilliance than baffle them with . . . too many options. Never again.

First of all this is a BUFFET, not a sushi bar. Once you get that straight you can enjoy yourself. The sushi is good though I have had better. The food is excellent, choices are great. The only thing so-so is the staff, service is lacking. The deserts are outstanding, don't forget to try a desert creip(sp). The birthday meal is great, I'm glad they have it back. When you compare what you would pay at any other seafood place for "all you can eat.....", this place is one great value!!! They validate parking too!

I've always been a sucker for the free birthday meal (which requires another "paying" person to accompany the birthday person), but this year marks the 3rd and final time I'll be forcing my wife (and punishing myself) to endure this "tradition".
The sushi has never been impressive, but this time we had especially bad fish, "hot" dishes that were warm at best, and desserts (usually a high point) that were mediocre. Yet it's packed with lines out the door! Why so many people love this place beats me...for as much as they charge for "all you can eat" you can get fantastic sushi elsewhere. Can't wait til next May when I can start a new birthday tradition...eating someplace else.

This is possibly some of the worst sushi I've ever had. I felt robbed when I left, having spent so much money and not enjoying a single item. Considering all the wonderful sushi resturants in Portland, I am truly surprised that Todai has even lasted as long as it has. It's a waste or real estate if you ask me.

A huge variety of sushi, none of it particularly fresh. Unless you go on a slow day, then none of it is fresh. Then there is their other seafood: water soaked crab, overcooked shrimp, unappealing tepid "hot" entrees. Been there twice, won't make it three.
