A group of us chose Fife for Valentine's Day dinner (none of us had been there, but the reviews were great). There were 3 couples total and we had reservations for 8:30pm. The experience was not good, to put it nicely. It started with a 20 minute wait after we got there (at 8:30). Our drink orders weren't taken for at least 20 more minutes. The wine was decent, but the one person that ordered a mixed drink was sorely disappointed (they'd run out of lemons, and it was a very weak drink). The portions were tiny - two couples split a salad and the amount on their plates were no more than 1-2 bites. The main dishes were horrible. Several of us got the cod - way too salty. Two got the shortribs - boring & dry with beans undercooked. Our last person was completely forgotten. The portions were way too small (the cod was described as coming with broccoli and there were literally 1-2 tiny florets on the plate). They apologized profusely, but it was a horrible way to spend Valentine's day. They explained that business had been so slow they'd had to let a lot of regular employees go and the vast majority working that night were there just for the night. We felt bad for them, but it will be hard to ever want to go back. They did comp our entire meal, which was very generous. We did leave money though, which more than covered at least the drinks.

Pros: Ambitious - they way overbooked

Cons: Food was poor quality and extremely small portions

I had been wanting to try out this restaurant since it is so close to work and I have read great reviews about it. I was the first person to arrive on a Friday evening at 5:00 pm, dying for a perfect steak and unique dining experience at any price. I only wish I had not chosen Fife to fit that bill. While I understood that the menu would be determined by a wonderful chef/owner, I had no idea that the menu would be so limited, restrictive and inflexible. The steak was tough (though ample) and boring. Having heard my complaints there was no attempt to make the experience right.

I've had dinner at Fife about 5 times in the last few years and every single time I've left feeling completely delighted. While the food is, by far, the most important factor in my dining experience, I'm always quite pleased with the staff here - they're knowledgeable, courteous, attentive and sincere (a rarity in fine dining if you ask me). They appear to genuinely care about the food and the experience and it really makes the whole meal much more enjoyable.

But on to the more important part... the food. The local, seasonally inspired menu has something for everyone and always leaves me a little sad that I have to chose just one meal! The portions are perfectly sized, the flavors are always INCREDIBLE and brilliantly paired, and the preparation and presentation are both beautiful. Even the textures are perfectly planned. I've had meat, fish and vegetarian choices (including squash blossoms stuffed with goat cheese, which were nothing less than mind-blowing!) and all have been savory, delicious and perfectly cooked. The desserts are quite creative and even the cocktails are inventive and delicious.

There are certainly other restaurants in town with well prepared, creative dishes, but I'll continue to hold Fife as an absolute favorite. The value for the impressive quality (especially given the locally sourced, natural ingredients), the attention to detail, the ambiance and the overall experience have left me utterly pleased each time I've dined here and I would recommend this place to anyone who genuinely appreciates food. It's a great place for a date, but you might want to come with a bigger party so you can try a little bit of everyone's dinner!

I had dinner at this restaurant with a group of three couples. The food was mixed, some great, some mediocre. The wait staff was attentive. The first bottle of wine we selected was the last one that they had. The main course that I selected was available, then not available, then suddenly available again. When it came time to pay the bill, which happened to be conveniently evenly divisible by 3, we gave the waiter three credit cards and asked that it be split evenly between them. When he came back, one of the charge slips had an extra 50 cents on it, which, when questioned, he explained was their policy to add if there were more than two credit cards presented. I understand the need to manage inventory carefully in this business, but this trivial amount seemed really tacky for an establishment that is on the high end of the price vs value scale. As others have pointed out there are many great restaurants in this city, so we will not be going back to this one.

I'll try to keep it to the facts of why we were disappointed with this restaurant. We were seated over a half hour late with no expectation set that it would be a wait. After making the reservation because of a prixe fixe menu just hours before, we were told they weren't serving it any longer. The meal was so so at best. The corn bread and 3 bean salad for $7 was dry and surprisingly contained only one type of bean??? The garlic and onion soup was interesting but not all that good. The carmelized cauliflower and dumplings was very good, but the braised pork shoulder was pretty flavorless and the sides were cold when it was brought out. With relatively small portions we were surprised they didn't serve some type of bread. Overall I would say it is very expensive and the quality is not that good. We will definitely not be going back, too many other great restaurants in this city.

I hadn't been to Fife for a few years...somehow it had dropped off my radar. A friend was having a birthday and I was invited to the festivities. I am now wondering why I have been such a stranger. It was hard to pick from the menu because everything looked so fabulous! I decided on a simple yet delicious salad and the cast iron chicken. I'm not sure what the secret is but this was truly one of the best chicken dishes that I've had in my entire life (and plenty leftover for lunch the next day!). Service was friendly without being overbearing. Desserts were truly sublime. I will most definitely be back soon!

I really hate to say negagtive things as I understand alot of businesses are struggling but I hope the owners read this and make the necessary changes. First of all, WAY TOO MUCH SALT!!!!!I left feeling like I needed to drink a gallon of water....Service was ok but the food was sub par... There were two small children at the cooking bar and I got the impression that they belonged to one of the cooks..Fine I guess but they were SO Loud!!!!I dont go out to eat to listen to children (small ) yelling. I have kids so when I go out I like to not hear all the noise. The restaraunt is marketed as, and looks really nice, but I truly felt I could get an equivalent meal at Outback Steakhouse...and I dont like that place either. There are so many great restaraunts to choose from here in town that I will never have to eat there again. It is worth it to say this and hope they can make some positive changes. Good Luck,

I took some out of town girlfriends here and they were so impressed. The food was terrific and the wine great - but we had what was the best berry cobbler I have ever had. It was so good that we ended up ordering a second one!

Fife is a gem! I took my mother there recently for her 60th birthday. I must have mentioned it when I made the reservation because the top of the menu said "Happy Birthday"! My mom was thrilled. Start to finish, the experience was fantastic. The portions are generous and the food was simple cooking at its finest. The product is obviously top-notch and there weren't any products on the menu that were out of season (a huge pet peeve of mine at other acclaimed restaurants around town). The service was impeccable (she even had my napkin folded over my chair when I returned from the restroom). I will be back again and again!

I'd been wanting to try Fife for a year and finally my husband and I went there on a date last Saturday night. I expected the place to be more upscale and was surprised at the casual "neighborhood cafe" kind of feel it had. First impression: disappointment. For a place this expensive you would expect the staff -- and the diners -- to be dressed nicer. (The waitresses all had bare legs and clogs -- even Denny's waitresses dress nicer.) I ordered a beet salad w/ goat cheese for $6 and was stunned at the miniscule portion size --the beets were no more than a garnish. For an entree I had the pork leg, which was salty but tender, accompanied by mashed sweet potatoes -- again the portion size was small. My husband had the Buffalo tips, which were far too heavily salted and they were stringy and tough. We ordered Lemon Pudding Cake for dessert -- mushy but not bad, and not something I'd order again. The best part was the wine -- Abacela Tempranillo from Umpqua Valley-- though when we asked the waitress to help us choose between 2 bottles she recited the characteristics by a memorized script, not by actual knowledge of their taste. And the noise! Imaine a whole evening of chairs scraping against a concrete floor, like fingernails on a chalkboard. I could never go back based on bad acoustics alone. NOT romantic. Not worth the money.

Pros: We got lucky on our wine choice

the appetizers were probably the best thing, the crab cakes were small but otherwise great, the beets with fennel was good too. they let us know that the brisket was almost gone and they were out of the mixed greens , it was only 730pm at night ( note there is a new seasons down the street right???) I know for a fact there is a Safeway on NE Sandy. The meat with the lamb and brisket ( potroast basically) was chewy and dry, The lamb was suppose to have mint aioli where was that? the potato with lamb dinner was cold, I had the dry brisket but liked my potato and garlicky greens. there wasnt much for $21! the chocolate cake was a good ending to this meal though..oh they dont have ice tea which is odd? fife is romantic and a great spot all but the main dinners, a little more sides please and no chewy meat!!! no wonder there is floss in the bathroom. go down the street to Acadia!!! sorry , appetizers and dessert only in this joint

My wife and I went to Fife for an inpromptu date night which traditionally ends up in a restaurant we have be wanting to try. Being a last minute decision, we hadn't made any reservations but were convinced by the friendly staff that they could fit us in. We were seated at the bar to have a drink while thay cleared our table. After a nice big pint of the draft porter we were seated at a nearby table. The ambiance was pleasant and I ordered an amazingly tasty appetizer of braised pork belly with fried fennel greens while my wife ordered a green salad with brindisi cheese crostini and a bowl of Hubbard Squash soup. The soup was simple yet full of flavor and perfectly creamy the salad was savory and delicious. For dinner I had an great Hanger steak which was perfectly cooked while my wife had another appetizer of crab cakes to round out her meal. We both loved our meals and enjoyed the wonderful frienly service. To finish we had a decent desert of spiced cake which unfortunately took awhile to arrive but were unexpectedly comped an additional dessert and all ended sweetly. Thanks for the great date night.

Pros: Imaginative menu; Very good food, especially the meat dishes!

Cons: No bottles of wine below $3o; Mediocre dessert

My wife and I ate here on a recent two-day trip to Portland.

We were immediately struck by how many families with children were eating in the restaurant. The place had a very modern, yet homey and comfortable atmosphere. A real neighborhood place.

The service was top notch. The waiter was quite attentive.

My first course, a small salad with a pepper dressing, wasn't anything to write home about. But then came the main course, a large piece of grilled lamb. It was the best lamb I've ever had, just seasoned to perfection.

You won't go wrong here.

however, I never had a problem other than to wait between courses when the restaturant was at its busiest at 8:00 PM. The crab cakes were stuffed and scrumptous; try the heirloom tomatoes too! Most recently, I had the cast iron chicken that was cooked to perfection; earlier the black cod that reminded me of Hawaiian butterfish cooked with miso. And yes, the decor is comtemporary and beyond nice with flowers and eye catching arrangement as you enter the dining room. I'm going to Fife again and you will do well to give it a try.

First off they have one item on the menu that is Vegetarian and no Vegan options what-so-ever. The wine list was not all that impressive. The prices to the portions were a complete joke. When asked why they have no vegan options, the server replied that the chef will NOT cook or serve anything that doesn't taste good to him. So if for any reason you are on a special diet DO NOT bother with this place. The food my husband had was not worth the money. The chicken livers were fair and the lamb was undercooked and there wasn't enough meat on them to even really call it meat.
I say don't bother with this place.

Crab Cakes were very good, but portion to cost made them pricy. Wait staff was rude and pushy. We had four different dishes of varying quality, the deserts were good and creative (interesting flavors and textures). Not sure if I would recommend this restaurant. We may go back to try again, but I think it was the service that realy turned us off and made the whole meal less than it could have been. Maybe we will get a better wait person if we go again.

Let's just be upfront: I don't cook. I don't cook and I don't have kids so that means that my husband and I eat out almost every single night. Due to this fact, we have tried pretty much EVERY restaurant in Portland. We love Fife. We love it because it is always consistently good and we never get tired of the menu items because they are constantly changing. The prices are fair, the wine list is nice and the service is always friendly and unobtrusive. Seriously, what more could you ask for? Kudos, Fife crew. You're doing a great job.

i really wanted to like fife. i like marco shaw's approach to food and to customers and critics. the menu is eclectic with little nods to the deep south and the east coast reflecting his cooking experiences. i am by no means a vegetarian but the menu feels meat heavy, the fish options available are not appetizing. maryland crabcakes with apple celariac slaw?? screams like it was stolen from the pages of the inn at little washington cookbook, contrived, unoriginal and boring. we had the "pan fried chicken livers with pork jowl bacon, onions and rosemary" and "mixed lettuces with marinated currants, redmondo and pistachio dressing." the livers: cooked to death, grainy and dry. the upside: seasoned really nicely, housemade guanciale very tasty and the sauce was rich and satisfying. all the good stuff goes away as soon as you bite into the first livery cottonball. the greens: heavy on mizuna (lots of mizuna in house, there is a mizuna salad on the current menu), the pistachios in the dressing were undetectable as was the dressing in general and the redmondo (semi hard cheese from oregon) was unceremoniously grated over the top of the greens. reonstituted currants? who cares. the upside: none, skip it. for entrees we had "grilled lamb chops with lentils, morels, onions and mint pesto" and "roasted pork shoulder with speckled grits, garlicky chicory and cider jus." the lamb: undercooked lentils, mint pesto so cheesy you couldn't taste the mint, 2 each morel mushrooms and the portion size was really small. 2 lamb chops and 2 morels for $23??! upside: one lambchop was cooked rare as ordered, so painful. the pork: SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THE MENU. pork shoulder roasted until it was hard and grey and tough. braise anyone, can i get some braised pork shoulder?? the chicory in the dish is italian punterelle which is wildly bitter and delicious but i got 2 pieces of it with the pork. the cider in the jus was non existant. upside: tasty grits but can i have more than a teaspoon??

Went for my husband's 29 birthday and it was everything we wanted it to be. The food was exceptional - definitely sit at the counter if you're into cooking (don't if you're not b/c it's all you will talk about!). The menu selections were original, but not overwhelming. The head chef/owner and his cronies made for wonderful entertainment. Some have complained about small portions - we found them perfect because we could try everything! 2 cocktails, 1 bottle of wine, 2 appetizers, 1 salad, 2 entres and 1 dessert later we couldn't be happier (especially for the very reasonable price - $120 for the two of us and you know in most of Portland that's a deal!). This was an experience we will not soon forget. If you love to eat out do not listen to those who have rated this restaraunt poorly - be prepared to dine for the evening!

Pros: Ambience, Counter seating, Daily menu

Cons: None

Taste buds anxiously awaiting another sublime crab-cake experience, we walked in the door only to be greeted by a big smile hiding a bored attitude. Sitting down and taking in the environs was pleasant enough, but not enough to make us forget the draft that wafted throughout the restaurant. My friend never took off her coat and I wish I hadn't throughout the disappointing meal. Eagerly I cruised the menu but was struck by the lack of attraction. Nothing even sounded good ... oh was THAT a surprise. Can't even remember that ever happening. Diverse enough, but the descriptions left me wondering if they could rise to the occasion of ambitious expectation and couplings. It was not to be. The crab cakes were paired with flavors incompatible, certainly not in concert with the crab flavor ? why try to camouflage it? The lamb was gristly and fatty to the tune of ?Why Why Why?. It was difficult to imagine that they would attempt preparation much less present it on a plate. The vegetables were inedible -- someone should teach the kitchen the difference between braised and burned. (This lack of knowledge was confirmed with the second offering as well.) Our service person was pleasant enough, but additional personnel were bending over, in-your-face condescending and too anxious ? began clearing the table before additional disappointing food arrived. (Hummm ... maybe I shouldn?t have stopped him???) Refusal of the lamb entree was taken pretty well, but the new selection was not available -- this early on a NON-weekend night -- and that meal was edible but oh so lacking. The end was memorable -- we paid a ridiculous price and still had to go elsewhere for a meal. We'll be laughing for a long time over this experience, but not willing to even suggest that someone try Fife after a waiting period. Usually a forgiving diner, I will probably never try this place again ... Looking for ?Fife?? Find Barney ? at least he?s the real deal.

My husband and I went to Fife for our anniversary last week and loved every minute of it. They even wrote "Happy Anniversary" on our menus! This attention to detail made us take notice right from the beginning of our dining experience. Our server was very knowledgeable and mentioned a great bottle of wine at a reasonable price. I had a wonderful beet salad that was incredibly vibrant and fresh. We both ordered the chicken and nearly licked the plate. Besides my mother's, I don't think I've ever tasted such amazing chicken. The dinner ended with a nice chocolate dessert and a cup of fabulous coffee. What more can you ask for? This place is top-notch.

If you're a crab lover, you need to try the crab cakes at Fife. I love crab and never pass up the opportunity to order crab cakes when I see them on a menu. The crab cakes at Fife are second-to-none. They are overflowing with Dungeness crab and pan-fried to perfection. There is hardly any "filler" like you see with many other crab cakes. Our entrees were also fabulous...I recommend the lamb.
The service was friendly and the prices were fair for the portion sizes. We will be back! (Please don't ever take the crab cakes off the menu)

The idea behind Fife is great. Sustainable local food. Fine dining. But my experience was not that great. I am a strict vegetarian and have never had a problem at other fine restaurants asking them to make me a special dish. Especially when there is one choice on the menu. Most places will make you a risotto or pasta dish or veggie plate if you ask. This place was not so friendly. The dish they had for vegetarians was a stuffed acorn quash, which I really didn't feel like eating, especially after seeing the range of choices for the meat eaters (rabbit to skate!). The strange waitress seemed put off when I asked her if the chef could make me another vegetarian dish, I mean, there were a billion sides and I figured they could come up with something! She blankly looked at me and said, "what, that doesn't look good to you?" meaning the acorn squash. I ended up ordering the squash, and what a disappointment it was. Bland, dry and boring. No seasoning, it was made up of wild rice, shittake mushrooms and lentils. I asked for a side of kholrabi and she told me that it had to be used for the other (meat) dishes and that I could not have it. Apparently there was a shortage. Everyone else seemed to like their meat meals, complete with at least two sides... I would say that a place like Genoa has better food, especially for vegetarians, nice and balanced, and the staff is gracious and non-judgemental. Fife is definitely not like that.

I went to Fife on 11-10-06. I arrived at 8 pm and had dinner with close friends and their two children. Dinner was on me. The children ordered the child's portion of Macaroni and Cheese. I ordered the chicken, an appetizer and a Manhattan. My friends ordered regular meals. The thought of a side order of mac and cheese sounded great. When I asked the waitress to bring me a child's portion of the macaroni and cheese, she informed me that the chef will not do it. I found this odd because I had already ordered $30.00 worth of food and was not trying to use my place setting to buy a child's dinner. She asked the chef (who I now know is the owner) and she came back to our table and said that I was lucky and that the chef agreed to do this favor for me but that I will be charged $18.00. The smae portion for a child is $5.00. I told the waitress to please bring me the macaroni and cheese. At the end of our meal, when she inquired how everything was, I told her fine and she said that I was lucky they agreed to make the macaroni and cheese for me. The bill came to $109.00. I wrote her a long note on the bill about her rudeness and explained to her why I would not be leaving her a tip. I work really hard and just do not want to be hassled when I am out to eat. I would skip this restaurant unless you enjoy being treated poorly. For that matter, if you do enjoy being treated poorly, Denny's is always a good choice and it is less expensive. I am guessing they are financially strapped or they would not behave that way.

I cannot say enough good things about Fife. Whenever we get a minute away from the kids, we pop over to Fife for dinner. It has been a huge favorite for a few years now. We went last week and I had the most amazing salmon EVER. So light and refreshing on a bed of fresh summer beans. Our service is always top-notch (they recognize us and treat us like family) and the chef/owner always makes an effort to say hello. The food is fantastic. Run, don't walk!

Came with high expectations but won't be going back!

Food was average, service was average & for 4 people our bill was $185.00! For that much money I expected much better service & food. A let down to say the least, we won't be back.

We walked in without a reservation and though we were seated after a short wait, the hostess made us feel awkward as if it were taboo to have not made a reservation. The food was good, especially the carrot soup. Our server was a bit arrogant and refused to tell us what the well liquors were, replying that he didn't know because no one ever asked. I prefer my beef cooked medium, but apparently chef will not cook it this way. Our server obviously did not know a lot about the menu items, which is okay, however he was somewhat rude and snotty regarding any questions that we had. As I myself am a server and do eat out quite often, I found the service appalling. I am sure this is an isolated incident, however comparable dining can be found elsewhere with much better service. Cocktails were wonderful.

Great ambiance and decor here and the service was outstanding. Our food, however was a little hit-and-miss. For starters we tried the flavor-packed Chicken Livers, which my wife thought were the best she had ever tasted. I had the Cream of Potato Soup. It was nice, but nothing to write home about. For our entrees we tried the Herb-Crusted Castiron Chicken which was quite tasty, and the Rabbit which, honestly, was dry and a little too bland - I was a bit disappointed. For dessert we tried the Chocolate Cappuccino mousse cake - It was good, but not amazing. The wine list was limited, but very affordable.

I recently attended Fife for a special dinner with 3 friends. Our food was good and we were happy until the bill came and we asked to pay seperately. We were told that Fife cannot accept more than 2 credit cards. As the unpleasant manager explained- they would not split the bill becasue the credit card fees were too expensive for Fife. Excuse me? I own a business, fees are negligible and our bill was 200$ for 4 people? Credit card fees aren't built in? Oddly, I'm sure if we had come in seperately they would have been happy to run all four cards. One Person paid and we spent the next 2 days making special trips to pay her back. It ruined a nice dinner and was incredibly bad service.

The neighborhood has changed, and for the better. Fife is a welcome addition to the area with its high ceiling, food bar and friendly service. The food is awsome but a little on the shy side. But my days of gorging on all you can eat have been over since the baby anyway.

I have visited Fife several times in the last year and have attended on a variety of occasions including dining with a large party, several dinners for 2-4, just me at the kitchen bar and also just dropping in for drinks and dessert. The food is always superb, the staff attentive and friendly and I always feel welcome and appreciated. I admire the restaurant's committment to using mostly local and organic ingredients. I have never felt compelled to write a review on this site but Fife has a forever fan in myself and my family.

Fife is not a place that I would go to again. I was very disappointed in how loud the environment was and the poor seating. Not only do you get soar sitting so long for food in hard wooden chairs, you sit too close to others in a 'school lunch room' type feel. The lighting was nice, but that was about it. The cooks in the open kitchen watched you while you ate. The food tasted adverage, portions tiny, and the bill extra spendy. My coffee was never filled when needed, and the poundcake dessert extremely dry. I wouldn't recommend this place unless you like close loud settings, so-so food, aren't very hungry, and have some money to burn.

The wife & I took a friend here on a Tuesday - got right in and stayed for 3 hours in an unrushed environment. Can be romantic but also good for a few couple to get together and enjoy a fantastic meal.
Buffalo tri tip was very good, the black cod was excellent. We enjoyed the appetizers, meal and dessert with accompanying wines and drink. Expensive but worth it on occassion.
Service was impeccable and made us feel very welcome.

Aah, this place is amazing! Service was impeccable: warm and unobtrusive. We never felt rushed and the timing was just right throughout drinks, appetizer, entree and dessert. Try the roasted/ pan seared chicken and the chocolate tart! Flavor combinations were inventive and original. This place has every detail down, from the lighting to well-placed restroom acoutrements to a delicate, still-warm ginger cookie that arrived with the check. Go.

We sat up at the open kitchen bar and had a great time watching the chefs cook. Excellent food. Remember, the menu changes almost daily - so you don't know what's there til you arrive. I had an awesome lamb with a beet salad. And the dessert - oh yeah, awesome!

First time for us to try Fife. First of all, any dinner conversation you may have hoped for will not happen - plan your romantic evening elsewhere. It's incredibly noisy. One of us ordered crab cakes for appetizer and they were OK. The other appetizer was a pork terrine that was 1) served too cold 2) tasted like a bland piece of cold meatloaf. The flatiron steak was pretty good, but served with a bad excuse for fries. The garlic crusted castiron chicken was tasty, but I think they forgot to put whatever it went with on the plate. It suffered for not having some mashed potatoes, polenta or something to soak up the pan juices. Server was prompt, but very unfriendly...and, overall, our first impression of the place was not too great. We skipped the dessert. Probably won't add Fife to our rotation.

Fife is an amazing restaurant. Always fresh, organic produce, outstanding meats, and just overall wonderful food. The menu changes daily, but the quality remains consistant. The ambiance is warm and inviting and though it is a fine dining establishment- it doesn't make one feel out of place if they show up in jeans and a t-shirt. I suppose it can be a bit loud on busy nights, but, honestly if you actually check out the place you will notice the little details they have put in place to try to combat this. On my first visit I noticed the carpet they have installed on the bottoms of all the tables and chairs to cut down the noise. As for people complaining about vegetarian options- well, last time I went they only had one chicken option and one buffalo option too...

I was expecting horrible service after reading past reviews, but our waitress was very pleasant and the manager even came over to welcome us for coming in for the first time. The food was delicious.....it was hard to choose an entree....however, the rib-eye was a tad too tough. The other problem, was that everyone at the table cleared their plate and were still hungry (we didn't get appetizers, maybe next time we will). The food was $$, but it was worth the experience. Liked the open kitchen.

I should have called ahead to see what was available for vegeterian dining. The vegeterian menu options included barley risotto and some salad choices. Not being a barley fan... I opted for not one, but two salads. This usually works fine. Well, first I got a beet and asparagus salad... good, but after I had a bite and my husband had a taste, one more bite... and that was it. And on the second salad: a nut & greens salad... literally, there was ONE nut. Come on. After I ate the nut, I had some greens... but what's a nut salad without the nuts? My husband nervously tried to make things better by suggesting dessert. He chose a lime curd cheesecake with marshmallow topping and a coconut glaze. I quickly decided Cher must have been the dessert chef for the evening and took a pass. I had had enough!

I'm the type that secretly loves seeing heaps of food on plates and who cringes inside when the plate comes to the table with a small, yet beautiful presentation. I lean towards 'cringe inside' when at Fife. It's very good, but I could eat so much more. I had a pork chop dish with potatos and apples - a creative and tasty alternative to apple sauce. The desserts are so very good and reasonably priced. It is a very noisy place - not an ideal romantic destination. There was also an extensive list of things on the menu that weren't available.

We've been to Fife twice in the past few months - the food is wonderful (but very small portions), the service random (ranging from excellent to last night when we had to ask for a waiter to be assigned to our table), but it was so loud both times we went that conversation was almost impossible. Go early on a weeknight if you want a good experience.

I am a chocolate fanatic...I search all over this great city to find stellar desserts. Park Kitchen is amazing. Bluehour. My husband and I went to Fife the other night just to grab dessert and the chocolate dessert that I had was second to none. My husband ordered a carrot cake cheesecake that was stupendous. The servers were very friendly and the room was comfortable. We felt welcome there...not like a burden at some places when you just show up for a dessert. We've heard great things about the food...we can't wait to go back for dinner!

Went two weeks ago. Hostess did not smile or really acknowledge us in any way. Just grabbed two menus and headed to the table. Too long for waiter to greet us & take drink orders. I have a tough time remembering what I had as the food, especially given the prices, was very mediocre. Reminded me of Cisco boil-in-a-bag entrees that mid-price restaurants like to serve. But Fife isn't mid-price. It has aspirations and pretensions of being a superior restaurant. I had the potato cake (tepid, insipid) and the beet salad--skimpy and overdressed. My wife had the squash soup (competent) and I can't remember her entree. Inattentive, unpolished service really made this a "CAN MISS" restaurant. Too long a wait in between waiter reconnecting with us. Too casual an attitude. Are many of the servers former diner waiters?

Pros: Nice room

Cons: amateurish service, boil in bag-like food, very loud

In a town blessed with an amazing array of superb restaurants Fife rates among the very best. A warm atmosphere, outstanding service and food to remember, when I find myself savoring smaller and smaller morsals to extend the tast experience I know I've hit the jackpot. Start with the crabcakes they are the best you will ever eat, and it gets better. Our favorite was the Cast Iron Chicken but there are a lot of items we have yet to try. WE WILL BE BACK

I ate at Fife this weekend for the 4th or 5th time...each time it seems to get better and better. My heart was set on a dish that I had the last time but come to find out, the menu changes a lot. I was heartbroken at first but then quickly turned around when the steak that I ordered ended up being the best dish I've had there. The service is great...very unobtrusive and laid-back. The portions for the price is a great value. Save room for dessert!

This is for all of you who plan group dinners. DO NOT go here. WAY over priced, rude wait staff, food was really good but we had to go out to eat when we were through. We could see the bar which was well stocked but not available. If you don't take my advice and you go here anyway, make sure you ask for a bartender if you're doing a private event. We took customers and were extremely embarrassed by the lack of food and since it was a private function we couldn't order off the menu. Most left unsatisfied. Getting coffee was impossible and a server was overhead telling another server who's table asked for decaf "give them regular, they'll never know the difference." Too bad. The chef is very talented and I would have liked to use again. I won't.

I had the pleasure of dining at Fife for my birthday. I was amazed at what a wonderful meal it was...start to finsih. I highly recommend the crab cakes and the steak that I ordered melted in my mouth. Service was great and the DESSERTS were out of this world. Overall, I don't have a negative thing to say. Keep up the good work. I'll be back!
