The management just changed February 2013. They fired all the staff for not bonding with the new manager and the place is now a waste of money. Don't bother unless you like short drinks, mediocre food made with poor ingredients and lousy

Friendly neighborhood bar with a great patio. Always good beers on tap and consistently good pub fare.

I have been coming here since Bobby converted it from the stinky Broadway Tavern. It has come along way and it has always been one of my favorite places in NEP. I will continue to come here as Marty & staff are solid and accommodating

I just sort of stumbled upon this place about a week ago since Thatch (down the road) had closed early. A friend I was with suggested we check this place out and I'm glad we did. \r

Went there with a date, left with a whole lot more! had a great meal (i recommend the fish and chips). Drank until the hottie behind the bar told me it was closin' time. The music was just right, the smoking patio was heated and cozy, and the late night menu rules! what can i say; i loved it!

Pros: Little bit dark, little bit hide-away, lotta bit thirsty!

Cons: it stops serving at 2 am

I've only been to the Rose & Thistle a few times, but definitely plan on going back. Their enormous patio is perfect in the summer and their menu is fantastic.

And the atmosphere here is great. It is a quaint little place to take a first date or your folks. The food is always good and so are the drinks. The staff is young and aware of meeting customers needs.

We have enjoyed the Rose & Thistle?s food on a previous evening. Last night we decided to meet a friend for a later dinner. As the bar area filled with patrons, the wait staff began seating the overflow in the dining area. Luckily we had finished our meal, were relaxing and conversing. Suddenly we began to smell the stench of cigarette smoke coming from the next table. Upon leaving, we asked the hostess if this was a common practice?allowing people to smoke in the dining room. Her reply was, ?When the bar fills up patrons, smoking or non-smoking, go into the dining room.? We were disappointed with the response and will only continue to patronize Irish Pubs that have regard for their customers.

After being what I would consider a once-a-week regular 5 or 6 years back I returned to check out the old place a couple of weeks back. It hasn't changed much, still the same old nicotine stained bric-a-brac solidly screwed to the walls. The dartboard has been moved to the front of the bar where a second entrance door used to be.

I was surprised to see a new deck in the beer garden albeit blocked off but there was still ample seating out-back regardless. I understand the former owner has passed away and it appears the good service that I had been used to passed away with him. I sat outside in the beer garden for over 20 minutes waiting for a friend to turn up when I realized the waitress had neglected to show up in a time manner too.

Never the less that did not bother me as I was looking forward to what I always considered the be the best fish and chips in Portland. What arrived sadly was far from the best fish and chips in town. The chips were sparse, greasy and the fish tasted metallic. I couldn't finish my meal. The layer of grime on the vinegar bottles didn't make things any more appetizing. Luckily the pint I had was on par with what I have expected.

I'm afraid to say the service was very poor, maybe I got them on a bad day but the waitress was not at all friendly and even rolled her eyes when I asked her if she could split the bill for me and my friend. I had to go inside to pay for my meal in the end and the young lady behind the bar didn't seem any more friendlier.

This is one Portland institution I will not be returning to any time soon.

We've been here twice and it's a great watering hole... The happy hour beers are only $3 and the pour is right on - no cheater glasses here! I saw the fish and chips go by over and over, and without a doubt they look right tasty... We stick to the pub grub call the "Scotch Egg" which is a hard boiled egg covered with sausage and deep fried crispy brown - Mein Gott it soaks up the beer buzz and gets you ready for more!!! Sunny patio and jocular patrons. A real down home place.

This is an OK attempt to create a pub in North America. The Boddingtons was average. Atmosphere good except for one major downside?awful music playing much too loud, rendering pub-type conversation impossible. If it has to be left on, simply turn it down and the atmosphere will improve 100%. Pubs aren?t places for swinging singles with blaring music.

The Rose&Thistle is THE best place to eat fish and chips, and the staff is great. I just moved into the neighborhood, and I plan to return. Thanks!

I cannot say enough for both Bobby and Sandy and this great place to hang with friends, become part of the family, or just an occasional meal. I strongly recommend Bobby's Fish and Chips! Yum, Yum!
-------------------
We recently lost a very special person, Bobby passed away August 26th,2006.

Some say he was just a crotchity, cranky coot, opinionated. Well, ok we all said it! This was all part of Bobby's charm. He also had a lot of heart, he just didn't want anyone to see his softy side. He put everything on the 'table', always said it like it was. A world traveler, he could recall each and every trip in great detail as if he had just gotten home. He always had something extremely interesting to toss out for discussion, or told great jokes, depending on his mood.

Aw, and no one can flirt like Bobby! He even made an old 'broad' like me feel good.

Sandy, we all love you. These last few weeks have been so hard on you, more than any of us could ever understand.

You are a lady through and through. You are also a very special person.

God Bless and Guide You,
T

If barmaids, waitresses, barmen back home in Scotland were as slow and unfriendly as this lot appear to be there would be no one in the pub at all, service was hopeless carried out by a sullen waitress and if your going to sell DRAUGHT beer (not DRAFT) at least learn to pour it,the smug big headed owner was a big turn off too.

Pros: The only Scottish Themed Pub in Portland

Cons: Needs to do a better job at being the only Scottish Themed Pub in Portland

The service was way below average at this pub. I thought it looked like a friendly pub, but I was mistaken. I am not sure why we had such snotty, rushed service as it was a Sunday and not busy. I think my husband and I were 10 times nicer to the server than they were to us. The drinks were weak and poorly made as well.

Guys, when you are on a date with that girl you'd take home to ma, bring her to The Rose and Thistle. A small and quaint place, come early if you plan to dine on a weekend evening. The menu is full of scottish recipes, and the drinks will take you to memories of castles and green fields. Located in the heart of the Broadway area of Portland, this restaurant is far from a corporate feel. Moderately priced, but not what you would consider a "cheap eat", the great food is worth every penny.

PROS: Unique place to dine
CONS: Parking right on Brodway, plan to search for a spot.

The first thing you feel when you walk in is welcome...Bobby and his staff are the best at hospitality. I chanced upon this place while trying to find shelter from the heat last July. Little did I know I would run into some of the best fare in Irvington, but also the best people. In an arae that can be somewhat "snooty" at times, this place holds the most down to earth, friendly folks-no matter what day or time you go. Thanks guys!

This is a fantastic place to hang out on a HOT Portland day. Whether you prefer basking in the sun on the fabulous patio out back, complete with beer garden, or cooling your heels indoors with the AC and the quaint decor, this place is perfect. The food is good, the service better! Stay a while, and grab a game from the game shelf. We stayed for three hours, eating good food, unlimited iced tea, and playing Scrabble and darts. A hidden Portland treasure, visit today. And if Danielle is your waitress, be prepared for some top notch service!

If I had to pick one pub, this would be it. No pub or restaurant has treated our group (pdxfun.com) anywhere anywhere near royalty as do these people. A quaint Scottish pub on the east side of the Willamette, near the Lloyd Center mall. One of the finest pubs in Portland because of their consistently outstanding service and good food. This is the only Pub Night venue that has received a letter of gratitude from the Bergfreunde board of directors.
