Any time our family wants to go out to dinner, Curry Leaf is always one of the top options on our list. We have ordered most of the items on the menu but really love the Masala best. Also, be sure to order Vada as an appetizer.

I just moved in to town and have been searching for good vegetarian food, but never did I think I would find this amazing Indian Vegetarian restaurant. It??s a small place, no more than 10 tables, but the atmosphere has a great vibe.

The service is awfull. The waiter doesn't even ask at all or at any time what and if something needed, doesn't check to see if everuthing is all right, if you try ordering something from the menu, you find out that they do not have most of the things on it. We tried to order tea and were told that there is actually only one kind that they do serve, they were out of the other two. Same with the desert, they were out of the first 4 but they said they do have the 5th one. They never brought a wine list to the table, so, when we asked about, they said, yes, we do have one and brought one to the table. All trought the dinner, even if they were not busy at all, the waitress never came to check on us. The barbequed meat is unbelievable dry and seems like it was cooked a week before and now, just reheat it. The service and food at this restaurant are misserable, they should not even be in the business of serving as they treat their patrons like crap and they can only offer half of the menu, as the other half they are out of it, even when the restaurant was quite empty at the time we were there.

The food was reheated,
1/2 of the menu items are not available
The service is terrible
The worst thing was when the waitress informed us that the tip should be 15%...... I was unhappy about the service and the poor quality of food, our bill was 50 dollars even, so I left 57 dollars on the table ?. When we were walking out the restaurant the waitress stopped us and asked me for additional 50 cents because the 15% of 50 is $7.50?. that was ridiculous?. I gave her one dollar and I asked for 50 cents back.

I've eaten at Curry Leaf since it opened in the Bethany shopping area sometime around 2002 time frame, before they expanded the area where they serve buffet. I stopped eating in long ago, primarily due to extermely slow and poor service. However, since I liked the quality of their food, I continued to order take-out. I now reside in Seattle, but visit family in Portland often. I had to provide this background to illustrate that I am trying to be as objective as possible in writing this review.

A couple of months ago we ordered some take out - Tandoori chicken and Palak Paneer with a bread basket. Palak Paneer was fairly good, but Tandoori chicken was dry to a point that it seemed it was re-heated and not fresh.

Recently, we went out for a family dinner on Saturday (11/8/08) around 7:30pm, and we were the only party (of 5) to be seated with several open tables. It took them ~15 minutes to seat us. Shortly afterwards, another party (of 8) was seated. It took the waitress another ~15 mins to take our order. We ordered Gobhi Manchurian (appetizer) Masala Dosa, Kashmiri Paneer, Palak Paneer (yep...we love Paneer), and of course Tandoori Chicken along with a bread basket. We asked that our dished be made medium spicy, and specifically asked the Kashmiri Paneer not be too sweet (there is sugar added to the curry). In the past, it used to take ~30-45 mins to get the food (but it was worth the wait). This time, much to my surprise, our food arrived in less than 10 minutes. Except for Palak Paneer and the bread basket, there was something wrong with every dish.

Service issues - There was no salt or pepper on the table. Even after someone from our party physically went to ask for salt, it was not delivered until after we had to remind the waitress again. We ordered three entres, and received one bowl of rice and one raita (should have received three of each).

For additional details, read my review on YELP (didn't fit here).

Pros: Manager/Owner nice enough to give it 2nd try to "fix" the food quality (but experience is spoiled).

Cons: Poor food quality, Really bad service

I am Indian and have lived in different parts of India. I have savored food in various Indian restaurants in Portland to state that this place has the worst food I have had here. The food is stale and is very bad. We ordered vegetable biryani and the vegetables were uncooked. Keep off this place if you care for yourself and your health!

People have high expectation on this restaurant mainly because it is in a neighborhood of many Asians. It is obvious to think that the restaurant may have a lot to offer. But people find it the opposite. Food is horrible. Main dishes are very generic. Lots of stale items. One items is not different than the next. Flour, potatos and chana in 100% of main dishes. Dessert is horribly mediocre. I never found the people working in the restaurant friendly. Prices are same as you would find in San Jose or in Manhattan! You will be waisting your time and money. One more thing to add: they convert to "special price" (more expensive price) at their own will if they feel like it. You decide and avoid regrets.

I travel to India on a regular basis for business. I typically eat in 5 star hotels and other rather upscale restaurants and have come to love the food.

There's a saying that goes something like "... the closer you are to India, the better the food..." So imagine my utter and complete surprise!! when my wife and I recently found Curry Leaf. The first day we ate there they were serving an all-vegetarian south Indian buffet lunch (every other Sunday). It was phenomenal!!! Indian food in Portland just couldn't be this good! Yet, here we were, feasting on the most fabulous authentic Indian cuisine I have ever found anywhere outside of that amazing country.

Subsequent visits have proven to be consistently delightful. The wait staff is excellent. The owner is very kind and they appear to strive hard to sustain their high level of quality. The masala tea (we know it as Chai here in the States) is as perfect as those I've had served in Karnataka, Kerala, and Andra Pradesh.

Each buffet offers up a tasty properly spiced selection of veg and non-veg. What I really enjoy is that each buffet is different. The individual selections rotate. This is particularly fun as I find other Indian restaurants in the area serve the same things every single day boring. Curry Leaf's approach is better, in my opinion.

I periodically host and entertain business partners from India. Just this past weekend we took two of my colleagues for lunch. They were quite surprised at how well prepared a particular eggplant dish was. They kept saying we had no idea how long it took to prepare this kind of dish. The end result exceeded their expectations and one said his mother couldn't prepare the dish any better. Indeed, such glowing words from a native born Indian regarding food prepared literally half way around the world from his homeland.

If what you're looking for is the real thing properly done then Curry Leaf is the best place in Portland for Indian food.

Pros: Incredible food, rotating buffet selections, service, style, aromas

Cons: They don't have a restaurant in SE Portland where we live

I moved from the east coast last year and decided to try some Indian food and one of my friends had been a student at PSU and had recommended this place. I tried the veggie lunch buffet and was very disappointed. At more than 12$ its definetly not worthe the price. I have never gone back there again. Chennai Masala on stucki avenue is a far far better choice.

If you are into South Indian food, this is the place to go. Fresh and consistently excellent.

Recently staff has been an issue, American servers have been employed and they are clue-less (bad service). Bring back the Indian servers- and pay them their tips!

(pay cash for tips as servers don't get them in Indian restaurants in the USA, usually)

Awesome authentic south indian food. yummm.... Very nice north indian, including Tandoori Chicken. Indian chinese is pretty good but not as good as chinese back in india. The service is missing though; less waiters means less service. Ambience is alright, especially in the back where there fumes do not come.

West side suburbia is the last place I'd expect good Indian food, so Curry Leaf is a nice surprise. The Shrimp Curry was the star of meal, and the Chicken Masala was very good. They need to work out the service kinks, as the waiter was literally running from the kitchen to the dining area. Lot's of Indian folks eat here, a good sign.

They serve wonderful, tasteful dishes that are spicy and tongue tingling. Here they don't serve dishes that is bland as in other Indian restaurants in Portland. Here it is authentic. Especially the Idili, Vada and Sambar on weekends buffet. My wife's favorite is Bhindi Masala served hot and spicy. Be it dinner or lunch, the Nan is out of this world.

Lunch buffet on weekends have excellent desserts.

On a cautious note, when going for Dinner call in advance and reserve a place, especially on Fridays. I went without reservation and had to wait for 25 min to be seated and another 30 min for dishes to be served. I learnt the hard way to call in advance. It is a kid friendly place.
