We tried Hot Lips in the Ecotrust Building and while it was okay, it was nothing like the rave reviews that had filled our ears before coming here. We went whole-hog, so to speak, and tried the raspberry soda (good, but not amazing) and a slice of the pizza of the day which had a white sauce, cheese and spinach. Thin crust, which the hubs liked but I prefer thick. The overall flavor was good, but with each bite I felt like my taste buds were searching for something...more. More flavor? I'm not sure, but I came away feeling like I'd eaten for sustenance and not for enjoyment (which is a cardinal sin in my book).

The other thing that peeved me a bit was the fact that there are stringent rules to be followed (is it just me or are many Portland establishments so busy trying to create and follow silly food "rules" that they just completely miss the boat on the customer's experience???). Only three toppings max allowed, and only one can be meat. NO TWO MEATS FOR YOU (bellowed in the tone of Seinfeld's soup nazi....)!

Oh dear. Can we all stop taking ourselves so seriously?

This location nine times out of ten has good pizza - sometimes, depending on the cook or something, the pizza is inconsistent. Overall, really good pizza and daily specials in-store. Twice on delivery, pizza tasted great, but they'd mixed up our order (and whole pies are way overpriced).
Wish they would stop (re)using gross trays. Super unsanitary. Glad they stopped collecting the trays, at least, on top of the garbage can. It's not NY pizza, but they're not trying to be.

Pros: great daily specials. carbonated coke is a bonus!

Cons: reuse of wooden trays is unsanitary; slightly overpriced but mostly worth it

We used to get our pizza from Blind Onion, until they closed their downtown location. We were devested until we found the Hot Lips pizza near PSU. Our first order was wonderful, and we were hooked. Our second order took 90 minutes to deliver and we live only four blocks away. Our third order took 2 hours to deliver. Both times we were quoted 45 minutes. Our fourth order was forgotten. So we called again and they cooked us a new pizza and priority delivered it with a discount. It was still raw, because they rushed it so quickly and didn't cook it all the way. We decided that perhaps the PSU location might be incompetent, but we didn't want to give up because the pizza is really good. So, we tried to order as a pick up item from the new location by the Civic condo building on Burnside. We called in our order and went to pick it up. They cooked entirely the wrong pizza for us. The person we ordered from had left, so no one knew what could have happened. So, they made us a new pizza and we had to wait 25 minutes for it -- making it yet another 90 minute experience. And no discount was offered. I am sure you can understand that no matter how good the pizza is, and no matter how much we like it, we are ready to give up on Hot Lips.

I love pizza, so when I went to hot lips for the first time I was really optimistic. But I was kinda saddened to see how similar it was to Pizza Schmitza. The places look the exact same. GRANTED! The pizza was ever so amazing

Our office has used Hot Lips a couple times and found both the pizza and service to be excellent. We've ordered 6-8 pizzas and the pizza's were delivered in a timely fashion and were still hot. I would recommend them for delivery or at their establishment.

Hot Lips is one of the few decent eating places around PSU though one labeled conspicuously as 'that hippy pizza place' by my best friend. They use great ingrediants and they are one of the few pizza places I've been where they have blue-cheese dressing as a dip for bread-sticks alongside Marinara sauce. Good stuff. They use - or say they use - ingredients from local farms which is nice but might explain their prices which are not cheap. Nevertheless you get alot of pizza for your money and a nice lunch. Many's been the time Hot Lips has sustained me and made my stomach full during long, angst-ridden rides back home to the burbs on the MAX from downtown. .

With brightly painted walls, diffrent dining levals and an outside deck, Hot lips would be my first choice in dining out to pizza. The slices are very large and freshly made, and the breadsticks are huge! Hot lips isnt dirty but with mitch-mached table clothes, and diffrent sized tables you really get a laid-back and 'homey' feeling. The staff was was very nice, which made ordering easy and fast. Plus the prices are very reasonable! its an afforadable lunch or dinner!

I go to Hot Lips Pizza because it's right on campus. And I'm so happy it is. Hot Lips Pizza is affordable ($2.75 for a slice of cheese pizza!), delicious, and they emphasize on using local ingredients. The atmosphere is laid-back and so are the staff. Awhile ago, they hired a guy who seem kinda slow. He's polite and all...but sometimes I need my pizza quick! People who thinks Hot Lips is disgusting are crazy! I prefer Hot Lips to Pizzicato (down a couple blocks) any day! (Pizzicato is more greasy and slightly higher in price.)

One word: Delicious =P

Some of the most interesting creations in pizza I've ever experienced: Broccoli, pine nut, cheddar and squash sauce or Ham and pear. Cool daily specials keep things interesting and even vegan foccaccia slices are great. Plain slice o' cheese is not as good as the rest, and while the breadsticks are cheap and popular, I find them dense and boring. PSU location fun hangout and Hawthorne store close to great shopping.

I really wanted to like this place because I live close, it's choice of toppings, and good reviews. I've tried it about four times and it just isn't very good. Three of the times I got slices and the last time I ordered a pizza. The pizza isn't horrible but it is dry, kinda burnt, and the cheese tastes fake. I think any chain pizza would have tasted the same or better for half the price! The daily special slices are interesting for a quick lunch and they do have unusual toppings and this is why I gave the restaurant three stars. But really, it isn't good enough, in my opinion, to order a whole pizza.

I've eaten here quite a bit in the past, typically for a pizza slice and a breadstick. The breadsticks are great and the pizza is usually excellent, although sometimes it is a little burnt. When the Pizza is fresh and hot out of the oven, it is very good. I think Hot Lips needs to improve a little bit on its pizza-by-the-slice consistency, and make sure Pizzas don't come out burnt or stay out on the display too long. Other than that, I have nothing but good things to say about the place. It has a very relaxed atmosphere, there is always reading materials around to read, plenty of napkins, beverage selection is very good, and lots of organic ingredients used in the food that they make.

Another pizza joint...but very fondly remembered
from my days at Portland State U! I would walk
the extra blocks just to go here for lunch, or even a break
in-between classes if I had a craving for Hot Lips pizza!
Quirky atmosphere, off-beat music, and a fun terrace to
enjoy great pizza during Oregon's nicer weather days,
Hot Lips is a 'don't miss' in Portland in my opinion.
I enjoy all of the flavors, but the Montrachet cheese w/
artichoke hearts is still my favorite after all of these years!

While in town a local pointed the way to the most delicious pizza- Hot lips Pizza! I am a very picky pizza eater and usually resort to making my own to avoid disappointment. The Pizza we had was delicious with plenty of vegetables and fresh garlic with ingredients that go all the way to the edge! Tasty Beer, Tasty Pizza- only wish there was one where I live!

People Of Portland: For the love of God...this is NOT good pizza! The sauce is completely void of taste, the cheese tastes like a processed cheese-food type product and the toppings we had (sausage and roasted red peppers) are even less appealing. How on earth does this place do such a brisk business? Is Portland really that backwards? Have none of you ever really tasted what pizza should taste like? Thinking about visiting Hot Lips? Save yourself a TON of money and head to Fred Meyer and pick up a frozen pizza....you will still be disappointed, but you will not be out nearly as much money.
And to the owners of Hot Lips: seriously guys....great pizza is reallly not that hard to prepare. We're not talking about something complicated....it's pizza. You should be ashamed of yourselves!

Some pizzas they use local and or organic ingredients which is always a plus. I always enjoy supporting the local restaurants vs chains. High recommended, give this place a try.

Maybe the Hot Lips on the east side is just bad because I tried it and can't believe it was voted number one. Vincentes, Apizza Scholls, and Flying Pie are my three favorites. I probably would even eat Pizza Hut before Hot Lips. Pretty bad I know. Maybe I'll give it one more shot. Nah, I don't want to be dissapointed again.

This place is sublime. I discovered this pizza place in the early 1990s and it is the only one I ever go to. Once in awhile they have pepperoni with green olives. I grew up on that combo, and I have never seen it anywhere else. The slices are large. They are served hot, and they never dissapoint. On the veggie side they have an apple bleu cheese and walnut slice that is really good, and their meat specials are extra fine. I have had some good experiences there. The staff is generally friendly enough, and the music ranges from oldies to the newest thing. Probably not a good date place, unless it is a date with your steady right before a movie or somthing, but really the best offered in this town.

I like to order the cheese pizza because it has such a good flavor! On days when the "pizza of the day" features roasted garlic I like to add that to my cheese and it is sooo good! Their staff is alway soo nice and quick! Whether I'm just getting a slice for lunch or 5 larges for that dinner party I was supposed to cook for, they're pizza is to die for!

I love this place and I love this pizza!! How can you go wrong- The slices are huge, hot and DE Lish US- I moved out here from Kentucky and have enjoyed trying all the different foods and pizza joints and I tell ya, I always go back to HOT LIPS. I simply must have my crunchy pepperoni slice but I have tried all the specials and the veggie is excellent. Try the blueberry sodi pop as well, it is just dreamy. The people are always nice ( I normally gravitate to the one on Hawthorne now.) it is so nice and clean and roomy. You get all the parma cheese, garlic,pepper-cheeni ;-) peppers, crushed red peppers you want too. OoOoOO and my hubby would just EXPLODE if i didnt mention the 1$ Miller beers. We have a 4 year old and she loves it too and seems to me kids are very welcome! She digs the funky art.

I have never had worse pizza than the other day when Hot lips delivered their first (and last) pizza to my home. It was burned, the toppings (thier recommended house made peperoni) was salty and very gross. The crust was so toucg I was tempted to use it for retreading my car tires. I ate two pieces, and was tempted to call the store and complain, but instead, I will vote with my wallet and never order Hot Lips again. And they charge a high price for this sad excuse for pie, if you ask me, and tack on $2 to deliver it!

I've been eating Hot Lips Pizza since I was a student at PSU in 1992. I usually go for a pepperoni variation. The crust, a classic east-coast style crust... thin, sturdy and adds just enough flavor to bring things together. The sauce is tangy and spiced correctly. Nothing I hate more than a sweet sauce. The toppings are fresh and well-proportioned. The only downside was having to drive downtown from SE Portland to pick up a Pizza. That problem has been fixed with their location on SE Hawthorne.

Hot Lips pizza: great crust, great sauce, great toppings. I worked at another great pizza place in high school, but Hot Lips is unique. An added benefit is that many of the ingredients are locally grown and organic. Great pizza and a business model emphasizing sustainability.

Pros: Quality Ingredients, Price

.

Service was prompt and friendly. Pizza was a liitle on the greasy side for me, but I'll be back.

I'm so glad to be back home in the NW, after 2 years in Arizona with bad pizza! My friends were laughing when I returned to Oregon with "my list of places to go". Needless to say, Hot lips was at the top of my list! Nice to know that after being gone for 2 years nothing had changed, still the best pizza in town! By the slice or "the box that's too big to fit in the refrigerator" it's all good! I only wished I still lived within their delivery area.

I am from New York City and lived directly above a fantastic pizzaria. I thought i'd have to suffer through Pizza Hut deliveries (since this really is a completely different type of pizza) but then I stumbled upon Hot Lips a couple of blocks from my apartment. The delivery service is excellent, although sometimes you could wait more than an hour for it to arrive. The pizza is always hot, always fresh and always fantastic. Lots of vegetable toppings, but they are often out of classics (like spinach). Definitely the best slice of pizza you could eat in Portland. Highly recommended.

The best crust that I can ever remember having. The sauce had perfect seasonings. Great Pizza. Ambianze was lacking.

Hot Lips has the best pizza because they use fresh, all organic ingredients. That includes the sauce. MOst restaurants have theirs filled with corn syrp even if the toppings are "fresh" Example: Papa John's

This is pizza at its most Italian and east coast. My mother-in-law was sicilian and her homemade pizza tasted just like this. Haven't found any better in all my tasting.....although if thin New York pizza is the way you like it, Geraldi's plain cheese tastes like you are back in New York.

I attend school at PSU and haven't had much of a chance to eat at any of the restaurants in the area, but I have tried the pizza at Hot Lips Pizza. I was drawn into the shop because of their organic advertising. The pizza is not bad, but the interior is not the cleanest and it creates a lousy atmoshphere. It is reminiscent of the interior of a men's college dorm. If that is the image they are trying to portray, then they have done a good job.

I've been a fan of Hot Lips since discovering them a few years ago, and was happy when they opened a location in the Pearl District, since I could begin ordering pizza for delivery. Whether its on the phone ordering pizza for delivery or in the restaurant to order a slice, I've always received friendly service. Plus the pizza has always been tasty, the freshness of the ingredients always pleases, and the only time the pizza was a bit cold the counter person was willing to heat it up for me. For the past year Ive used Hot Lips when I want a whole pie, and Escape From New York when I want a slice, and I foresee continuing to do so. The only complaint I have about the restaurant is that the tables should be cleaned more often.

Given I've only been here once, but considering I live right across the street, I'd rather walk 5 blocks to find a better meal. The ambiance is fun & cool and prices may be fitting for the student crowd. I was completely unsatisfied with this pizza and the service. Waiters were rude and the pizza was cold organic cardboard. I normally believe in second chances but I think I'll pass on Hot lips unless I become a street kid.
