staff very friendly and helpful. was told tofu was made locally and just that day. great sauces. nice steamed veggies - broccoli, mushrooms, carrots, cabbage. other meats and fish look a bit pricey. but there is a reason why there are lines out the door here.

Pros: tasty and healthy food

Cons: small tables/space

Tom's has the best bento in Portland. He has an unbelievable selection (salmon, sirloin, grilled chicken, baked chicken) not to mention a few other items on the menu. Everything on the menu is very reasonably priced, and the service is excellent. A can't miss.

For those of us that work downtown and want healthy REAL FOOD options for lunch, Tom's is the place to go. The meats are tender, good cuts (not fatty or low grade) and the bento is served plain so you can dress it up as you like (spices, sauces, etc). There are usually about 10 people in line during the lunch hour but you won't wait longer than 10 minutes. Even if you had to wait an hour, it would be worth it.

I am very picky about my food. I was not sure about this joint my co-workers reccomended but thought I would give it a shot. The is by and far the best descision I ever made. The food is so wonderfully prepared it is well worth the 8 or so blocks I have to walk to get there. Heck if they were open on weekends I would take the bus from Tualatin to Portland just to eat there. The selections for making your bento are outstanding and all just as flavorful. The service is fantastic and very friendly, fast and accurate. I have gone there in the height of lunch time and been out of there with my food in five minutes. If your in downtown portland during the week you really must stop by and try the bento.

For years I have been scouring the streets and alleys of downtown Portland looking for a place to get a healthy bento lunch. Unfortunately all i ever find are miserable cuts of chicken, dry vegetables, and no option for brown rice. I heard some good things about First Avenue Bento and decided to trek a good 12 blocks from my office to try it out. What a treat! The chicken looked better then if I would have grilled it at home, the vegetables incredibly fresh, and so many intriguing things to try. Lamb, salmon, tiger shrimp, it all looked fantastic. Finally I have stumbled upon a winner. Highly Recommended!

This is a great bento! They have the most friendliest service! I havn't experienced this for quite some time! The veggies are so so fresh and the price is very reasonable. Great for lunch or dinner to take home! I go several times a month!

Pros: good quality box lunches

This place has become a regular lunch spot for me. The owner and other employees are always helpful and friendly. And the food is fast and good at a moderate price for downtown lunch. Fresh salmon, lamb and top sirloin are in addition to the standard chicken, veggie and tofu options. Mmmm... and brown rice with options of peanut sauce, teriyaki and other sauce delights! For someone who is gluten free, it's easy to find a delicious alternative.
