Luz and her family prepare and serve authentic food from their home country.
The sauces are the best I have ever eaten (try the Chile Relleno and the Enchiladas Suizas for example).

We try to eat here once a week if possible.
They also have a great breakfast on Saturday, but only from 9 - 11 AM.

Pros: Authentic Mexican food in a family owned restaurant

Cons: Closes early some evenings

I live in Bend and make Mitzal a must stop when we come to Portland. The service and food are always top notch. I have never had any problems with service. The food has always been mouth watering, making me want to return as soon as possible.

Pros: Best Real Authentic Mexican in Oregon

Cons: None

We've been there three times. The first was iffy but this last time was our last time. The pizza had a peculiar taste..was told by a proud waitress it was Cinnamon. The salad had very little dressing and the foccacia bread was stale to say the least.

After traveling to Mexico, and living in San Diego, it was great to find this little place that does serve authentic Mexican food. Peopole are friendly, you can see into the kitchen, and the spices are fresh. The only drawback I can see is that their menu changes weekly I believe. What you ordered last week may not be on the menu this week.

I consider myself to be an expert Mexican chef. My Mexican grandmother taught me to cook and I spend a lot of time in Mexico every year seeking out the best culinary experiences I can find. Mitzil is hands down the best Mexican food in the entire area, by a mile.

The food at this place is just what you'd find in the best restaurants in the Guadalajara area (which is where the Mitzil chef grew up). Everything on the menu here is killing. The tortillas are even fresh, which is rare here in the NW. I've never had a bad dining experience here in the past four years that I've been coming here. It's well worth the half-hour drive from PDX. The prices have gone up a lot in the past few years and the entrees are now up around $13. They do have less expensive items on the menu though. If you want to taste what authentic Mexican food is really like then make the trek down to Mitzil and taste it for yourself. You won't be disappointed!

Pros: incredible food, an 0rgasmic delight of authentic tastiness, salsas are amazing, fresh tortillas, homemade mole to die for

Cons: too far from PDX, not cheap,

I was excited to discover a little piece of my country here in Oregon City. The food at Mitzil is amazing! It made me think of my childhood as I grew up in Mexico. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is interested in eating what actual Mexican people eat every day; not the tex mex version of Mexican food sold everywhere. Give your taste buds the gift of discovering real Mexican food.

POST CONTNUED:
After my mom told this shocking story, it was my best friend's turn. She said that she had gone into Mitzil with her mom one day for lunch. When she ordered her meal, she politely asked if she could have extra beans in place of the rice. The waiter guy replied "No! No substitutions! This is not Burger King!" Then my friend explained that she would be happy to pay for the beans. "They continued to argue with my friend and told her again "No substitutions!" Then she said to them "Well you can just leave them off of my plate since I do not eat rice and it will be a waste." They continued to argue with her and asked her "Do you think this is Burger King?"

The owners of Mitzil need to change their ways. They can't expect to treat people like this especially in the economy we are in. Dining for many right now is a true treat. I would never go to Mitzil after what I have learned of how they treat their customers. I hope other people out their think twice about eating there. It simply is not right to be rude to people for no reason. What if a customer is lactose intolerant? Are they going to tell them that they have to have cheese? This is such a joke. Nobody said Mitzil was Burger King. Mitzil should be able to make these substitutions especially since the food is made to order. How ridiculous.

To the owners of Mitzil: Good luck keeping your business open. You can't treat customers badly for long. Before you know it word about your poor service gets around!

Best Mexican food around. The family that owns and operates Mitzil's are the best. Always friendly and happy to see you. They have wonderful items on the menu as well as daily specials. My favorite dishes are the camarones and the black bean enchiladas. My family and I have spent a lot of time in Mexico and can't believe we have a little piece of it right here in Oregon City!

This small family-owned restaurant is by far my FAVORITE restaurant in the Portland area. I am even willing to say it's the best restaurant I've ever been to - period. The food is hand made to order with fresh and healthy ingredients. No lard! And this is AUTHENTIC Mexican food. Don't expect to have hum-drum chips and salsa on the table when you sit down and order a "chimichanga" like so many Americanized Mexican restaurants. The food is true home-made Mexican food and they are passionate about serving healthy Mexican cuisine. Trust the chef - she is fantastic and she is a joy if you can interact with her. She truly makes you feel at home. Each table has an assortment of hand-crafted hot sauces - the Chef's own recipes - and I highly recommend the oil sauce with the charcoal (?) in it. I don't know what it is called, and I don't know how she makes it, but it is to DIE for. The atmosphere is so friendly and comfortable. My favorites are the mixteada con rajas, the burros, and the chilli relleno (special). They are working on adding more vegetarian options to their menu (but there already is plenty for a vegetarian) and expanding their menu. This restaurant is worth the drive if you don't usually venture out to Oregon City. Luckily I live within walking distance. Come out and try for yourself. You'll be hooked.

Absolutely fresh home-cooked Mexican food - everything is hand-made. Not your typical family Mexican restaurant (you won't find combination platters or $8 sugar-water margaritas) just amazingly good food. The daily specials are not to be missed.
