.

I have to share my experience with Gresham Tire (aka Tire Factory) at 17650 SE Division. I have a 1985 Nissan, about 125,000 miles, and have used Les Schwab down the street for tires, batteries, brakes, CV joints and shocks. Having gone to Les Schwab less than a year ago for a tire rotation, I was told my brakes were "about 50%" and would probably need replacement in about a year. Sure enough, this fall I started hearing the squealing of brake cyllenders, so I took it in to Les Schwab to get a quote. An hour later, they quoted me "$280" for the front brakes only. They claimed the rear brakes were "sealed" and that they couldn't get the drums off without breaking the bearings. Also, they couldn't get to this until five days because it "was hunting season and they get a lot of hunters in this time of year. This all sounded like a lot of BS to me, so I left without authorizing service or making a return appointment.

I drove my car to Tire Factory up the street where they had an estimate in about ten minutes: $310 for all four brakes (semi-metallic). No problems encountered in inspecting the rear brakes. They had the job done in a couple hours and I drove it home that afternoon very pleased with the work & effort.

I've encountered a few other Les Schwab tactics that are questionable practices. They push tire "siping" which costs extra per tire but doesn't really give the average driver any perceptable difference in performance or wear. They can be really great and then again not so great - much depends on the deal, the employee and the individual experience. However, my last experience with Les Schwab on 169th & Division left me high & dry.

I highly recommend the smaller and more service friendly Gresham Tire just up the street. I got better service, a better price and was much happier with my brake job than with Les Schwab's quote.
