Honestly my husband could spend all day browsing the new camera equipment as well as the photographic supplies. The staff is knowledgable and not pushy. Highly recommend this for the camera lover.

i like taking black and white photographs and all my devveloping is done here. they do the best job of it and they also have a great selection of all black and white photo supplies that you need. they answer all your questions. all services are reasonable. they know you by name so i like the individual service atmosphere.

If you're looking for photo equipment of any kind, watch the ads for Camera World. But, be warned. When they have a sale, the store is packed. It can be a bit difficult to get a sales associates attention. Be patient though. The wait is worth the prices.

PROS: Large selection-good prices
CONS: Long waits during sales

I often take my black and white film that needs devloping here. Its right downtown, at Washington and 5th on the bus line, so its easy to get to.

The turnaround time is pretty quick. I've had some labs take a week or more for my black n whites. At Camera World, I've had them back in a matter of days. The pictures I've taken here have all turned out well...unless, it was the photographers fault.

I moved to Portland in 1994, and have tried many photo places. Camera world has the best prints, and their sales department is pretty good as well. When I want a piece of equipment, I go on-line, and bring Camera World the cheapest price--they have always matched it.

Some things to note:
Their printer auto-corrects. If you ask them to, they will disable the auto correction.
The RitzPix dot com engine is necessary for Camera World's on-line print service. It isn't great, but it works.
Finally, use their digiprint cards. These save me a FORTUNE every year, and I don't think they ever expire. Digiprint cards are pre-paid photo cards. If a print normally costs 30 cents, using the prepaid digicard, it drops it to 19 cents or so. I use it primarily for 5X7 prints, which again, saves me a fortune.

Cons: RitzPix Website isn't great for web orders, but it works.

I went into Camera World for the first time two weeks ago. My Nikon digital camera has been giving me headaches, so I asked for some help. Although the men I talked with didn't have expertise on my model, their printing guy was pretty nice. He gave helpful recommendations, and he did some excellent touch-up work on a photograph.

I came back this past week asking for more prints. This time, the photos took over the stated hour to develop. They were very helpful and attentive...that is, until any issue came up. When the pictures were finally ready, the guy who helped me this week asked me to examine them to make sure they were okay.

I took one look, and was angry that they did no touch-up work, despite my clear request otherwise. This incensed me, because last time they told me that their service was much better than the competitors, because they did manual retouching. Of course, the guy blamed the problem on the printer, which was an absolute joke. The problem was that they treated me little more than order number 25646.

When I asked for them to run them again, they told me, "Yes, but this time only." So, let me get this right: they will give you excellent customer service the first time, but once they hook you in, then they will only correct a problem if they have time. Well, this is the last time I am going to Camera World.

Pros: Conveniently Located Downtown

Cons: They close at 6 pm weekdays, on-again off-again customer service

I drove 6 hr. to get to Portland with a stop at Camera World on my list. I needed to replace a camera, but hadn't 100% chosen which camera I wanted to buy. The Nikon salesman was rude and acted like I should have walked in, pointed to the camera I wanted, and bought it. "What do you want?" and wouldn't even attempt to show me some service. I tried to tell him I needed to SEE some cameras, DIDN'T know what I wanted yet, WAS going to purchase, and PLEASE help me because I drove 6 hours to shop at THIS store. I finally gave up and left, though I tried very hard to get some service. This has happened to me in the past at this store. This time I had enough. Never again will I attempt to purchase at this business.

Pros: Alot of merchandise

Cons: Rude salesmen- not worth paying for parking downtown

I have found a premier retailer at Camera World. I read the other reviews on this site and was uncertain on what to expect. I knew what I wanted, but I wanted sales advice to ensure I was not overlooking anything. The mega chains typically do not hire photo professionals who know the gear they are recommending.

I was pleasantly surprised when I walked through the door and the sales associate listened to my needs and wish list. He quickly assured me my non-CPU Nikon glass would still be handy if properly configured on Nikon?s newest digital SLRs. He then recommend I use the new CPU professional glass to fully take advantage on the new Nikon D300.

I walked out of the store with several giveaway perks I did not know about (lens filter, printer, memory card, and photo classes). The customer service was excellent and helpful. Parking is no problem since Camera World will validate your parking at the nearby garages.

Camera World has earned my respect and I look forward to buying my next Nikon body and glass from them. Thanks John...

I crashed two cameras in the last three years, so I started
using them because they are the only place I know of to offer
unconditional damage insurance. (Real insurance, not the cr*p they
try to push at most electronic stores.) You pay more for the equipment
than you would online or maybe even other retailers, but for me the option
to be covered is worth it given what I put my equipment through. Maybe I've
just been lucky, but I always get good customer service. Haven't seen
the behavior described by the other reviews. In fact, they have bent the rules on two occasions
to help me out on manufacture returns (I haven't had to use their insurance yet, but
have no reason to expect that they wouldn't come through on it.)
They are a little biased towards their personal brand preference,
which is something I can overlook as most camera salespeople who are actually knowledgeable
tend to be gearheaded, and thus inevitably opinionated. The few dudes I have
talked to have had no problem admitting what their biases are, and admitting
to what items are in fact overpriced. (Not like they don't know what things go for
online, too.) Yep, parking su*ks; it's downtown, what do you expect? If parking is
an issue, just scrap it and go to Wal Mart. You could land a jet in their lot.

PS Sorry, cr*p and su*ks are apparently inappropriate enough to alarm the software.
Maybe c-r-a- p s-u-c- k- s works? (sorry gramma)

Messed it up with no offer of a refund, no apologies except a insincere, "sorry about that". lied about how bad the issue was....man. I won't ever use them again.

After reading the reviews I almost didn't go to Camera World. I am so glad I did. The service was not as described by other reviewers. I did wait a few minutes, but I got complete information to all my questions with a phone number and name to call to get more. I was subtly discouraged from buying now as the product with the features I want is coming out later. This was true even though I would be purchasing on the islands instead of a mainland store. I was very pleased with the information I got, the thoroughness of the explanations, and the integrity of the salesperson.

It is so dissapointing to see one of Portland's great stores bought out and go down the tubes. The sales people here are rude, misleading, and act like you are bothering them with your presence. The prices are significantly higher than other stores as well. The combination of high prices and poor service make for a very dissapointing experience.

Since Camera World was bought by some corporate megagiant, this place has gone in the tank. I've gone in half a dozen times since the buyout, and been consistantly treated with disinterest and contempt. Everyone has the attitude that it's an inconvienence to do their job. I called the downtown store about a video camera that was just replaced by the manufacturer, asking if CW might have one still in stock. They did, but the guy did a used car salesman bit on me, asking me how much I was willing to pay. When I asked him to just give me the price, he gave me one that was simply outrageously high, more than double what the camera was listed for at full retail, just before being obsoleted. When I commented that his price was excessive, he hung up on me! I will never frequent this store again.

We went to Camera World tonight to purchase my new Digital SLR. They were very busy. We stood and waited for help for about 15 minutes. We weren't acknowledged AT ALL. I understand they were busy, however, it would have been nice if they had at least made eye contact and said:"I apologize for the wait, I'll be with you shortly." (At least something to that effect.) A manager walked by and didn't even stop to help. He was looking at all his reps and the customers and didn't offer to help us at all.

When we finally did get some service, the guy wasn't much of a help at all. I inquired about a package available on the internet and he looked confused and then he tried to sell me an extended warranty for $153.00 which would have covered the camera for a year. WTF?

Camera World in downtown Portland is a rip off. These guys do not stand by their work at all. I bought a camera and bag and it turned out the camera did not fit the bag very well. I requested that the bag be exchanged or a credit be given towards a new one. They wouldn't even do that. The manager was very condescending and, in my opinion, rude. This store does not deserve your business. I have also been in to the store on a number of occasions and been treated as though I was a nuisance rather than a paying customer. My only regret is that I dropped any money at their store to begin with. Do yourself a favor and shop somewhere else!!

I've been into Camera World four or five times in the last few months to research a purchase I planned to make there. I don't know the man's name, but I experienced the following twice: the first time I went in, he was talking with a co-worker and ignored me. When he finally asked if I needed help, he answered my questions like I was taking up his time. I went in again to ask about a mic for a camera, he said they were out, I asked if he knew when it might be back in stock, he said No, and resumed talking with his co-worker like I wasn't there. I bought the camera I researched there at another store (Circuit City), a bag for it down the street at Shutterbug, and I'll be buying the mic from Home Video Library. Bad customer service cost Camera World around $1250.
