I had read the negative reviews about this store and I was hesitant to visit it during a recent trip to Brookings. (I had planned on checking out the other store in town which was highly recommended but it never seemed to be open .. I don't know what hours they keep.)

I found that the store has a new owner and he is really doing a nice job of improving the place. He's a nice guy and seems to know what he's talking about.

I recommend this store and think everyone should give it a chance.

Driving through Brookings, I stopped at this store looking for some pets for my children. I learnt that the store is under new management since September 2008. The new owner, a young Iraqi war veteran, medically retired from the Army as a consequence of injuries sustained during his military deployments, offers a very large variety of salt water fish, reptiles, birds, rodents, puppies, supplies in general and even ferrets. I had been told that the place was small and smelly, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a very clean, well organized and generously supplied pet store. The service was friendly, the owner very knowledgeable and the experience was memorable for my children that still enjoy the ferret and the salt water fish we bought there.

First of all, this building is not large enough for the animals or supplies. The fish selection is wide, but the fish tanks are dirty and unkept. The store doesn't smell very clean, and the rodents are jammed into a dark room in tiny cages. I was very disappointed by this store in many ways. The only reason to go to this store, rather than a-zotics ets (across from CFCU) is if you're interested in purchasing saltwater fish.
