We were hungry and just driving through Mt. Hood's beautiful scenery - saw an inviting exterior saying they specialize in burgers.
The MOST AWFUL BURGERS we have ever eaten - EVER!!!
Their gimmick is the multiple toppings - everything you can think of and more - - - trouble is they start with awful tasteless, dense gross hamburger patties - just like the cheapest you've ever wished you'd NEVER bought from some freezer case in a discount grocery store. Really the pits.

Hubby and I had 2 different burgers and ate the decent fries and toppings (partially) which we scraped off the meat - - - -neither of us mentioned it as we were "eating" but discussed we should have told the staff these the worst we'd EVER EVER had.

TRAVELER beware - drive on by - eat somewhere else.

$20+ for 2 burgers this bad - is, well - should be, illegal.

They should be ashamed of this product.

Pros: nice waitress - poor woman.........

Cons: pitiful burgers - meat tastes like freezer-stack patties...

I had been hearing great things about this place for years, and last week I finally made the trip out with a couple of friends. And all I can say is, wow, it was easily worth the drive.

The Food:
Calamity Jane's has some of the best tasting burgers around, and with a pretty extensive menu, they've got every kind of burger you can think of ranging from mundane to "why would they even make that?" - so regardless of your taste, there will be something to suit you. and I can attest to the fact that the marshmallow and hot fudge burger is actually quite good. Their milkshakes are also fantastic, and quite large.

The Atmosphere:
The restaurant has a western sort of theme, and while the theme has been done to death, Calamity Jane's did a good job at at least making it look good. There is nothing fancy about the place, they don't try to win you over with a ton of decorations, it just feels like home.

Service:
The one time I went was on a Tuesday night, and it was fairly early in the evening, so we basically had the whole place to ourselves. Looking back, I think we were only three other occupied tables. Regardless, our waitress was quite friendly, and service was quick.

My one gripe about Calamity's is that it's kind of a long drive from home. If you live in the Sandy area, it's going to be right down the street, but I, like most people in Oregon live in the Portland area. If my memory serves me right, the drive was about 40 minutes one way. But in spite of the long drive, I am definitely glad I made the trip out, and I'm already thinking about going back.

In short, if you like a good hamburger, you'll love Calamity Janes

We ordered the halibut fish and chips. The fries are real fresh potatoes (house fry's.) We also ordered hot choc.(Really good) .Besides too much salt, on the fries(order yours without salt), the onion rings were also fresh and tasty! Fish was fresher last visit. But still you get 4 HUGE chunks of fish for $12.99 and with a side salad. Not bad as you can take home the rest for another meal. And for $4.00 more, you can get 2 more pieces of halibut. Our waitress was the best ever! An older woman who still puts her eye make up on and service like it should be with a smile and a honey to it. We are definitely going back for round 3 of halibut fish and chips(dinner menu)... Happy Campers here! :) Oh, and the owner will sometimes come out and entertain you with the best corny jokes and riddles while you wait for your late lunch. Who could ask for more?! Well, maybe one of the ladies room toilets could be fixed. It has been O.O.O. for weeks! Not a nice sight with door missing and traffic cones in there in a restaurant..But if you need to fill up teen boys, this is the place for them. My boys were actually taking cell phone pics of their HUGE burgers and forwarding it to friends and family. Too funny! We highly recommend Calamity Janes for family, friends and a fun eat out at halfway decent prices. Leave a good tip ! We just did here too. They have earned it in my book.

I can't say enough about the enormous and enormously good hamburgers from Calamity Jane's. Our family loves to stop in for the great atmosphere and burgers, and our kids love the frozen mugs of root beer. Bring your appetite because you won't eat for days if you can finish one of the burgers here.

The milk shakes are also out of this world. We go there once or twice a year because four of us can get two menu orders and split them. The food is good ole country food

So my family went to clamatiy jane's for our annual family reunion. we showed up unannonced with 30 people most of them being screaming 2 year olds. the manager imediatley opened there patio for us and gave us our own server. the manager came out to check on us, she then talked all the guys in our group into the trailboss burgers (which are 1 pound each) and of course we all had shakes. after our meal most of the guys need to take there burgers home.... out came a hand drawn BOX OF SHAME. WE LOVED IT!!!! Kudos to whom ever came up with that, and thank you clamity staff for making our family time a very enjoyable time.

This place has been around forever and when you first step inside it smells like it. It has an old musty cigarette smell, not that appetizing. Once you get used to it the place is ok but the food is just average and the service pretty poor. We were given the wrong soup and since the server never came back to check we finally had to ask someone else to get the correct soup for us. They also forgot to bring my son's milk until we asked, after the food was delivered. The burgers are huge, definetly can be split. The sandwiches are ok, nothing special. If driving up to the mountain and hungry it is an ok place to eat but not worth going out of your way for. Very kid friendly, they have a kids menu, crazy decor, and brought crayons and a picture for him to color while we waited. More of the kind of place you go once to say you have been since it is kindof iconic in East county. My husband went as a kid 30 years ago and says the place hasn't changed a bit except his taste buds grew up and he can see why his parent's were never that excited to go there!

Pros: Kid Friendly, Crazy Pizza Burgers, local landmark

Cons: average food at best, poor service, hard to pull out of lot onto busy hwy, smelly dining room

Every one loves calamity janes. I hear some people from the city complain about it's cheesy decor, and strange menu...but come on...it's awesome that they serve everything (and I mean everything) in a cast iron pan, but that's totally part of it's charm. They make HUGE burgers, huge shakes...it's all great. If you're looking for something sane or bland, this is not the place for you! But this really is a great kooky gem in Sandy...try it once!

Great food...HUGE food...classic american fare, and really hoakie western decorations! I grew up on the mountain and i've always liked Calamity Janes. Famous for their burgers and desserts. Wait staff of local teenagers is not stellar but they get the job done.

Our family of 4 kids and 6 adults stopped about 8 pm one evening. We got seated right away, but our server was terrible. Never got our drinks for 30 minutes and the kids had to wait almost 40 minutes. Then, some of us never got our drinks or never got them right. My dad was ready to leave, but we decided to stay. Needless to say we finally got our food after 1-1/2 hours. The food was good, but the servous was terrible. There was serveral servers just standing around, talking. Our family will never go back....

WOW! I sure wish my school cafeteria fries and frozen patties would have tasted like this! If they had, I wouldn't have ate elsewhere whenever I had the chance. Some reviewers clearly expect a "champagne taste with a beer budget".

The key words here are VALUE & SELECTION. CJ's offers some of the best burgers in the area and they do it without emptying out your wallet. They also have some pretty awesome appetizers and deserts. Plus, the staff is always very pleasent and friendly. The atmosphere is very comfortable, if you are an outdoorsey type person. If you are a stuffed shirt or an elitist snob, keep driving. This place is for hungry and jovial folks, not egocentric whiners!

My boyfriend and I LOVED IT! I got the Wrangler (2/3 lb) Bonanza burger. It was HUGE and soo goooood, I just wish I could have finished it. My boyfriend got the Trail Boss (1 lb) Guacamole burger. He finished the whole thing and the other half of my burger. We both loved it though. The service was awesome, some of the best service that I have gotten at a restaurant in a LONG time. Also, they have a 34oz mug of beer for $6, how do you beat that!? We will definetly be going back. I want to be brave enough to try one of the really odd ones but I thought I should stick to something normal it being my first time there. I think Calamity Jane's needs to be number 1 on the list.

Without question CJ's is the best. I've been to hamburger joints up and down the west coast and CJ's is by far the most imaginative and consistant. I love the George Washington burger, it's the Hamburger with pie cherries and sour cream. If you like spicy burgers they have three great ones to choose from. If you like a ham and eggs on your burger, CJ's is the place to be. The service is always friendly and the ambiance fits right in. If you r a traveler leave your dollar bill and they will hang it up with the other 300 or so. Thanks Calamity Jane's, lookin forward to seein you again soon.

Calamity Jane's has the very best burgers, shakes, fries, etc.. In Oregon!! I grew up there so I know!! My family has known the restaurant owners, since they started the restaurant, and they are such wonderful people!! It has a great atmosphere! The servers have always been so kind! The decorations are so cool, especially the swinging bar doors. I wish I was still living in Oregon, I miss it!

Having lived east of Sandy for over 20 years, my family (including 3 boys) often stopped here on our way to town. The boys loved all the choices in burgers and the wonderful milkshakes. I could never finish anything, but I sure enjoyed trying! Calamity's is a great family experience...why, one afternoon, we were feasting on our favorites, and in walked Davy Crocket, plopped himself right down at our table and gave my small sons the thrill of their lives! Can't beat this great place!

Have been visiting all the highly rated burger joints like Helevetia etc. So far, this is absolutely the best. Great atmosphere. The burger menu has to be the most extensive anywhere (and I mean "anywhere"). Try the Black Bart- a polish sausage burger (1-3 patties along with spicey polishs sausges slices in a huge sandwich). I like the fact they offer a condiment bar too. The fries however were not that good-- not hand cut and a bit soggy when they arrived.

I've been frequenting Calamity Jane's for years, and I've never found a place that has comparable food. The burgers are massive and come in 1/3lb increments. The drinks are gargantuan. The variety of choices is dazzling. Pie cherries? Sour Cream? Peanut Butter? If you've ever thought of it, they have it for your burger. Since its only location is in Sandy, it can be quite a drive for Portlanders, but it's well worth the trip.

This place is great. Great people, atmosphere, location, and most of all food. The world famous burgers really are all that. I have met people from Sydney Australia who have eaten there. On the menu is just about any thing you could desire on a burger. With three different sizes to chose from any appetite can be filled. Thank you to the folks at Calamity Janes for providing a great place to get a burger.

If you're one who likes to have a little fun at dinner, then come to Calamity Jane's in the middle of dinner hour. That's when all sorts of folks come from all over to enjoy a good meal with an old western atmosphere. It's best to come when it's crowded because the more the merrier. The staff especially like to play it up with the old western theme. And if it's your birthday, be sure to get yourself over there, they'll have you standing and singing on the tables if you're willing.

I went here with my wife just because she wanted to visit her brother in Sandy, and after we all came here I wish this place was closer. The burger reputation is well-deserved; I ate the biggest one there (I can't remember what it's called), and got very full, and I'm an AYCE veteran. My wife's chicken fried steak was so huge and good looking I had to try a bite of that, too, and her small-framed brother ordered a simple sandwich that also managed to overflow the plate. Fantastic ambiance iside, too, with historic pictures. I'll definetely be back someday.

My wife's chicken fried steak was so huge and good looking I had to try a bite of that, too, and her small-framed brother ordered a simple sandwich that also managed to overflow the plate. Fantastic ambiance iside, too, with historic pictures. I'll definetely be back someday.

Pros: Burgers, Large private booths, Excellent service

Cons: Far-out Sandy locale

.

This is the best hamburger place I have ever tried. I had the hambuger that had the pineapple on it (I think its called the Hawaiian Burger) It was so good. I can't wait to go back. I came to CJ when I was on vacation from Hawaii. I didn't want to leave Oregon.

Cons: Far away

The best burgers in Oregon. Period. Anyone who argues otherwise hasn't been there. I have been to most of the places on the 'best hamburger' list and none even come close. Worth the drive to get there!

I've been away at school for the past 4 months (east coast), so I have been without the glorious gift of a Trail Boss teriyaki burger from Calamity Jane's. No one on the east coast can appreciate bliss found in a pound of beef served at Calamity Jane's. With in the first few days of being home, I made the trek up to Sandy to enjoy the much anticipated meal fit for any Oregonian. I must say, Calamity, you never cease to please me with your magnificent food. Thank you for burger number 50.
