Super kid friendly, nice atmosphere. You can rent the space for meetings and gatherings which makes for a relaxed get together with your group.

Okay, so this was a lot of fun for my 2 year old to play. Loads of toys and separate play rooms, so no worries that a rowdy kid will disturb anyone. I ordered a hot chocolate, and holy cow, it was BAD! Really, REALLY bad. You know those cheap advent calendars with chocolate inside and the chocolate is so disgusting that you can barely bring yourself to swallow? It literally tasted like they took some of that, and melted it into some water, and added a splash of skim milk. It had very minimal "chocolate" flavor that hardly even tasted like chocolate.

I went in here with my son to have a pop and apple juice. I decided to order a sandwich which they were out of but didn't come tell me till I came and found them to find out where my sandwhich was. I then changed order to a roast beef sandwich which had 2 pieces of roast beef grilled on a very very soggy piece of what was suppose to be sour dough. Thought the service was slow and very unfriendly.

Pros: great play areas for children/free wi-fi

Cons: slow sad service

Hmm...I'm not sure what it was like before to cause the bad reviews. I'm hoping that my experience wasn't an anomaly because I had a GREAT experience. There are two large play areas for little ones with lots of toys for kids of various ages. Great sitting spaces, computers, wifi, the list goes on and on. The food prices were very reasonable and the staff were friendly and nice so I was very pleased with my experience and will definitely go back. Family friendly places are few and far between so when I find one I like I'm happy, happy, happy! P.S. they are pet friendly too :)

I tried this place today after a recommendation from a friend as a wifi location to work in. I had a great experience, so unlike many of the reviews. The baristas were helpful and friendly, the space totally fit my needs as a telecommuter, and the kids area looks like so much fun I want to take my kids back. I liked the coffee and had a yummy sandwich for lunch. I came away knowing I would go back. The baristas said it was under new ownership and that they were trying to make it a community gathering spot. Hope it works!

Pros: Example: best croissants in town

Cons: What are the drawbacks?

I am certainly not the first person to post on CitySearch about how terrible this place is, and I'm not sure that it's even worth doing anymore. People have complained about the awful, awful food, service and coffee that they've received here, and yet, people continue to patron the shop and they continue to remain open. Honestly, it's baffling. I suppose that if people continue sharing their experiences at this place and continue to bring the star rating down, people who utilize this site for choosing their coffeeshops can at least be accurately informed. So, for those of you who do that, I would highly recommend that you stay far, FAR away from the Urban Grind. I've had very similar experiences to those posted before me, and I don't feel that there is anything new that I can really add to what they've already said, but I will say that I agree wholeheartedly with the other one-star reviews. This place is completely useless. The service was terrible, my food was cold and stale, they were out of what I wanted originally, and my drink was bitter and full of grounds. There is honestly not one redeeming thing about this place and I sincerely, sincerely hope that it goes out of business soon because the building is seriously amazing and I would like to see something worthwhile move in.

I used to walk an extra distance on my coffee break to go to the Urban Grind. The coffee was so good. Dark, dank, thick delicious coffee. The kind that you take a drink of, and then are forced to reflect upon "damnit that's good." The kind that really totally makes your morning.

My past three visits to the Urban Grind have burst my bubble, wasted my money, and just really p'd (citysearch won't let me describe exactly how p'd off I really am) me off. The first of the three was a morning before work at 7:05am - they reportedly open at 7am, and the door was open, but there was no barista in sight. I stood at the counter at first quietly and politely saying "hello?", then finally in hurried frustration "HELLOOOOO????" "IS THERE ANYONE HERE?????" A sleepy and rude morning-breath toting barista came out after over 5 minutes of waiting and informed me that she "hadn't finished opening yet." She did, however, serve me a cup of VERY BAD coffee - just maybe a hair step up from 7-Eleven. Um, let me clue you in on something - PEOPLE DRINK COFFEE EARLY IN THE MORNING. If you own a coffee house, you should be open and ready to serve at least coffee early in the morning. And FYI, 7:00am is LATE.

The next visit was a mid-morning coffee run. Again, the same barista - this time I'll call her a "barista" - served me old, terrible, weak coffee and acted as if it were a huge imposition that I had ordered it.

This afternoon was the absolute end to all ends. I will not be going back there, nor will anyone from my office. Three of us went to get after lunch coffee. I wanted coffee, and the other two people wanted lattes. The SAME stupid "barista" informed us that they were "out of espresso" and that there wouldn't be any until "my boss gets back to roast some." WHAT??? Are you f'ing kidding me? She offered us coffe, which we got, and it was...SURPRISE...F'ING WRETCHED. I just got back to the office to throw it out.

Geez.

this place has been flamed all year about its terrible food, coffee and service. it seems almost unnecessary for me to even write this review since i'm not really adding anything new to what others have said, but i guess it's important for people who are using citysearch to choose a cafe to know that this one is consistently bad. and it is. i've had similar experiences to other users; the baristas are incredibly rude, the food isn't very good, and the coffee is terrible, which, in my mind, is not acceptable for a coffeehouse. especially an indie one. the baristas clearly hate working there which is why they are rude and lazy, and whether they mean to or not, it gets passed across the counter to the customer. they're always out of something and it's always dirty, too. i honestly don't know how they stay open. with all of these negative experiences people are having, it's never busy, and it seems like they would go out of business really fast.

I live right next door to this place and would patronize regularily if it wasnt for the poor service I encounter upon every visit. Almost 3 years now I have tried to come back but am always disapointed.
The service is as bad as it gets. It is never busy, the counter person is usually sitting, they let you know how much you are putting them out by walking in there and wanting a coffee. They are rude, never say hello, thank you, smile, nothing except a bad attitude. The coffee bites too but I somwetimes I can look past that. Today I wanted a tea. I looked for the tea list but didnt see one so I asked the frumpy girl with glasses what she had. It seemed that I asked her rediculous question. All she need to do was hand me a paper tea menu. It was a really big deal apparently. There is someone new working there everytime I go in but they all share the same customer service skills. It's too bad. The space is really cool nad the art is nice, it's also about 100 feet from my house so it would be very convenient to go there. I just dont.
F*#$ them and their burnt coffee and terrible staff.

Cons: Terrible service and burnt coffee (always)

I love coffee which is why I tend to stay away from the Starbucks of the world and get a little more for my money at local, independent coffeehouses. When I heard that Urban Grind roasted their own coffee, I was really interested in trying it out, so I headed on over this morning to get myself a latte, and I am telling you -- words cannot describe my disappointment. The coffee was TERRIBLE. Just AWFUL. Not only were the shots burnt, but the milk was scalded as well. I guess the barista figured since I ordered vanilla in it, she'd just cover the burnt flavors up with syrup. WRONG!!!

And, the serivce was pretty bad, too. The place wasn't very crowded when I went in (probably should have been a red flag) and it still took the barista a good five minutes for me to even get noticed. No one was behind the counter when I walked up to the register, and when the barista did come out from the back, she didn't even bother to greet me. I actually had to go up to her and tell her that I was ready to order. I was going to order a bagel, and she informed me that they were out, so I asked her what she could make instead and she rolled her eyes and pointed to the menu. I just ordered a pastry. Then, I asked for my order for here and she put my drink in a paper cup so she wouldn't have to wash it, I guess. And, the icing on the cake was that my pastry was moldy. She took it back, but not without an annoyed sigh.

I will NEVER, EVER go here again. This place is horrible.

I went to this coffee shop for the first time, and the service was horrible. First off, the barista was completely rude. I was the only person in the entire shop, ordered my drink, and she "forgot" about my drink after 15 min. Once I reminded her, and received my drink, it had not been mixed and was horribly burnt. Avoid this place if you can!

I love local coffee shops-- which is why it's been my mission to visit every independent coffee shop in Portland.... The Urban Grind was awful.
The barista was the most unpleasant person I've ever encountered behind a counter in my coffee consumption experience.
From the moment I asked what kind of syrups she had, and she snapped "look for yourself" it was all downhill.
My friend asked a question about what was in one of the drinks- the barista insulted her and said something condescending- implying that we were ignorant fools for not knowing-
After we got our drinks I asked where the sleave things were and she snapped "We're out".
When I took a second cup to insulate it because it was too hot to hold, she actually raised her voice at me and said something like,
"Why don't you put that back and take a napkin instead of wasting a cup!".

Um... Excluse me... but why didn't she serve our coffee to us in the CERAMIC CUPS that were sitting in a stack, clean... instead of the ridiculous paper cups if she was so concerned about conservation... We were there to eat breakfast. This was not a to-go order.
She was so rude, I was embarassed to have taken my friends there.
As it was I didn't order anything else and certainly didn't tip her. Normally I put 5 bucks in to support the independent places. I left feeling mad at myself for paying any money at all.
There are too many fabulous coffee shops in Portland to waste a trip at this one.
URBAND GRIND: TWO THUMBS DOWN, NO STARS. (the one star is only because you have to give at least one to post something) IF I COULD GIVE IT NEGATIVE STARS, I WOULD.

I work in one of the office buildings around the coffee shop and I've been a regular off-and-on over the years. With the plethora of other coffeehouses within walking distance, the Urban Grind faces some stiff competition, and frankly, it's not doing so well in my opinion. For example, the owner (Kevin, is it?) obviously spent a lot of time and money on new decor for the shop, but has failed to remove or replace the old furniture that is literally falling apart. I sat down on one of their (filthy) couches last time I was in and the legs buckled and collapsed underneath me! I only weigh 110 pounds... and there were children playing near me when it happened. What if one of them had their hand under the couch when it broke? As for the staff, I could not be more disappointed with the service they offer. I ordered a sandwich for lunch the day the couch broke, and not only did they make it incorrectly, the girl at the counter refused to take it back. I was stuck with a sandwich that I didn't order or want. And, the coffee is just okay. It's not bad, but it's not great. Personally, I think they'd do a lot better serving Stumptown. In conclusion, I have lost all faith in this place and I will now be walking down to the Hip Drip Cafe (on 20th and Sandy; they serve Stumptown) for my coffee needs, as will my co-workers. This place had great potential and really cared about its customers and community before all of these changes started taking place. I am not impressed with the new ownership and I honestly hope Kevin has the decency to just let this place close so something good can move in.

This place is sooooooo much better than it use to be. The new staff is nice and friendly and the place is clean. I had a chance to meet Kevin the new owner and he is not anything like the writers have mentioned. Sunshine started on shift as I was ending my meeting. I think she and Jason the main barista are genuinely friendly. This place has a great atmosphere and the coffee and service are very good.

I agree wholeheartedly with the last comment. This place is horrible now. The place is now under new ownership, and since the manager and roaster left, there's nothing there for me. They don't even have their old wi-fi anymore. Their coffee is sub par, their staff is completely apathetic, and they are located inconveniently. They just hired this one woman named Sunshine and I don't think she could be more ridiculous. She's nice, but completely fake and annoying. It makes me sad that this place is el terrible now because I really used to like it.

I have to say that I will never, under any circumstances, visit this place again. I don't care if my car blew up a block away and my husband were trapped inside the flaming vehicle; I wouldn't even come in to use their telephone. I have spent a great deal of time (and money) at this shop, and I loved it for a while, but things have definitely gone downhill. The ownership of this shop has been disgusting and negligent to the point where their only good roaster quit. Their coffee tastes like garbage now. And, the manager, the only person who knew how to make a decent latte or cared at all about the customers is also gone. Honestly, this place used to be a haven for coffee snobs and they used to have some of the best, friendliest baristas in town, but now, they don't really have anything going for them. Their new owner is an arrogant a-hole who thinks that buying some new couches is going to make up for everything their loyal customers (and staff) have put up with. Newsflash: it won't.

I used to hang out here all the time. Last September, I gave this place a glowing 5-star review, and now, I'm just so disappointed to say that I have to take it back. I have been a patron of the Urban Grind since pretty much the beginning. I really loved the shop and stuck with it through good times and not-so-good times, but now, it's just bad. They've had a string of really amazing baristas in the past and I made friends with all of them, but now, the shop is so bad, they're all gone. No one here knows me anymore and what's worse is that no one here is even willing to get to know me. I don't know about you, but personally, I expect an air of familiarity and friendliness in an indie cafe like this, and I just don't get it here anymore. The staff is apathetic and aloof at best, and downright rude at worst. They used to have this manager, Jenna, who was so cool. She loved all of her customers and she took care of her staff, but she left in March and the place has been steadily declining since then. They used to have a barista named Jason, but he's gone too and the people left are not nice at all. While the space is great, it's filthy, and the coffee isn't even worth coming for anymore. They roast their own coffee and used to have adventurous, well-rounded blends as well as a variety of single-origin coffees, and now, it seems like their roaster just throws whatever happens to be on sale into the roaster and lets it run for about 20 minutes too long. That's not the way to run a successful business and as sad as I am to say it because I have a history with this place, I'm going to have to start getting my coffee elsewhere. To anyone thinking about going to this shop, I say DON'T! You'll regret it. Try Tiny's Cafe instead. They're located on MLK north of Broadway, and they also have a location just off of 12th and Hawthorne.

I am disappointed that this great space is so filthy. I have tried it a few times over the past few months and it has gotten worse each time. It's unfortunate, because this space has so much potential. The main area for hanging out is great, but the toddler rooms are disgusting. The toys are all dirty, as is the carpet (not sure they ever vaccum) and the worst was the food left on the table had fruit flies on it. I'm not sure if they are aware of how many germs kids spread, but childrens rooms need maintanance. It is unhealthy for kids to play in filth, let alone an unclean space in the winter. Good luck if you try it!

Pros: big space

Cons: filthy, not safe for kids

You won't find a more kid-friendly coffee house with so much space well...anywhere. It comes well equipped with a train table, chalkboard, play kitchen, books, and much more to the keep your tykes entertained while you enjoy a fresh roasted (yes, they roast their own in the back!) latte with a friend. It even comes without the glares if your child is the more active type. They have conference rooms for rent, hi-fi hookup, pastries, sandwiches, friendly service... they have it all!

I flew into Portland for a meeting there Monday, stopped there again Tuesday, and one last time right before I left yesterday for another cup of coffee and the free wireless to chat with my office and correct the proposal. They were so nice, the food was great (fresh soup every day), and the coffee was out of this world. Had a few too many kids for about 15 minutes of my visit on Tuesday but the rest of the time it was great. Wish we had one like this back home!

Pros: WiFi

Cons: lots of kids sometimes

I am sitting in the shop right now, on one of their two computers available for public use, enjoying this amazing cup of coffee roasted right in the back along with this Thai curry that is out of this world! It is completely out of the way, just a little hidden gem, but I will be back!

Pros: Coffee, Free wifi & computers, awesome food

Cons: I have to leave...

So, I have heard that the coffee was good--and it is. Organic, direct trade, all roasted right in the back room by hand, BUT there are also 3, count 'em THREE rooms almost exclusively for kids! As a father who sometimes has to keeps his kids while I work at home, I know that when we come here the day is saved. The food is also good--Wednesday is Curry Day and it is awsome!--and there is always some thing to do. They have free WiFi as well so if I bring my laptop I can also get some work done! I love this place!

Cons: I can't think of a single one!

This is perhaps a most amazing combination of quintessential independent Portland coffee house--they roast their own mostly organic coffee in the back!--and HUGE space for computer work (they have both FREE WiFi and two FREE computers for use) and kids/parent's area. I was just there today where in addition to the 3 kids play areas, they also offered a couple of FREE films--which apparently they do once a month. The food was also quite good, almost restaurant quality for a coffee shop, and again, the coffee was amazing. An awesome place. I will recommend it highly!

Pros: Coffee, kids areas, service, very friendly, food

Cons: it may be too big, if that is possible!

I don't what happened to make the previous reviewer so unhappy but I find that the UG still serves great coffee and has a very homey atmosphere, The food selection is somewhat limited but I think that their coffee is the best in town (thanks to Macker, the roaster) -- and it's free on Sundays. As for the staff: They have had some turn-over recently and I miss some of the old faces (Ian) but Macker is there just about every AM doing the roasting and the new baristas have always been nice to me.

Cons: No food on Sunday, Public computers break often.

Anyone notice there hasn't been a positive review on this place for nearly a YEAR? That's because it's not what it used to be - AT ALL! I used to frequent this shop daily & found it to be a welcome, friendly & thriving environment. Now you walk in & the response to your presence is complete indifference. I'm not sure WHAT happened here, but all the used to be friendly faces are gone, the food & drink quality has sunk to far below average & there's never another soul in there when I go by. Too bad! I give it another six month & this place will be closed for good.

Pros: Used to be a hoppin great place with fabulous staff/coffee

Cons: indifferent staff, poor quality, overall sorry experience

This place may be a bit hard-to-find, nestled in between some large industrial warehouses, but inside is a spacious comfortable coffeshop with some sandwiches, bagels, and desserts. They are extremely computer-friendly and provide outlets, powerstrips, and wireless internet- I brought my laptop and portable printer here and set up a mini office to do a bit of work while drinking my brew.

PROS: Spacious, comfortable, and computer friendly
CONS: hard to find

Not a bad word to say about this place. Food is fast, fresh & CHEAP... where else can you get stuffed for six bucks! And the coffee is FRESH. They roast their own in the back - ask to see the roaster... the owner took me back for a quick tour without hesitation. I like that the people are NORMAL, not all into themselves & too busy to make sure you get what you want.

Food is fantastic & fresh - curry of the day can't be beat! The staff is totally down to earth & not all coffee snobish. The owner is just a doll & is there most days making sure you're well cared for. This is the only place I've found in PDX where the service and quality is consistently exceptional.

My new home away from home. Best wi-fi connection in town & the place is HUGE! I can work on my computer with pleanty of elbow room and have used the conference room for private meeting with clients.

Roast beef panini is my new mainstay - perfect with the wasabi mayo. Thanks UG!

There's no other place like this in Portland. Think of that TV show Cheers - that's this place. I swear the owner knows everyone by name, including me. I introduced myself the second or third time I was there & she's remembered my name (& my double 8 oz breve latte) ever since. If you spend any time there at all, you'll see what I mean. Coffee is fresh roasted on site and they have a wicked good curry of the day that's made fresh each morning. You won't be disappointed in this place - beats out every other coffee shop in town!

THE place to go if you want to hang out with your laptop and an excellent cup of joe. They have full wireless access for free, many places to plug in, and there's usually a posse of geeks hanging out surfing. A surprisingly nice-looking place, given that emphasis! They grind their own coffee in the back, and it's very good.

I like that they have a play area, the coffee is good. I do agree with the other reviewer to an extent, the coffee house area wasn't the cleanest but seems that they have cleaned up the play area as we didn't smell anything and toys were

This coffeehouse is a great alternative to Starbucks. The pastries are better here and I like the different types of coffee. Additionally, they have wireless internet available which makes this an even more homey place as customers really
