We did a total remodel of our kitchen/dining room/laundry room/pantry. This involved knocking out walls, refinishing large amounts of existing wood flooring to match new flooring, stone countertops (for an island), steel countertops (for the remainder of the work surfaces), and some high end appliances. Working with GBS was great. We were wary of design/build firms that required substantial payments before we would even get an estimate of the cost. GBS was willing to estimate the cost of the cabinets (by far the most significant cost for most kitchen remodels) and provide really basic renderings for free. Once we were comfortable with the cabinet cost and committed to at least buy our cabinets through them, they brought their primary sub (Quality Craft Construction) to provide a detailed bid for the entire job.

Their primary sub (Quality Craft) was excellent and very timely. GBS was amenable to doing things piece meal, so I bought some appliances through them (microwave, dishwasher, vent) but others online (faucets, lights, 48 inch range). I also did all of the painting and some of the flooring work. Finally, we went with a third party to do our soapstone counters and GBS was able to smoothly coordinate working with our stone contractor. Ultimately, the installation was excellent.

From a design perspective, GBS offers relatively basic services. If you have a pretty good idea of what you want, they can expand on your ideas and help fill in the details. However, for people who truly have no concrete ideas about what they want to do with the room, you might want to consider using a dedicated designer.

My builder used General Builders Supply for their cabinetry and appliances. I have had nothing but problems with my cabinetry and they would not replace nor fix them even though my home was brand new! The manufacturer even came to my house and saw that they hadn't put facing on the cabinets to cover the shelving and when I demonstrated that the contents on the shelves would fall out on to the counter they told me that I shouldn't use the back part of the cupboards! Do not use this company!
