I read some positive stuff online about Atlas Tattoo and I received some positive feedback from a friend as well so I decided to give them a try.

My so-called artists name was Dan Gilsdorf. Prior to setting an appointment I reviewed his sample photos from previous tattoos. They looked good so I decided to give Dan Gilsdorf and Atlas tattoo a try. I also noticed Dan had a waiting list so I assumed he was a good artist (HUGE MISTAKE).

I also learned by doing extensive research with the BBB and all the major online review sites that several of the positive reviews posted about Atlas Tattoo were FAKE REVIEWS that Dan (the shop owner) paid his employees to submit. We also heard the news of Atlas posting FAKE reviews directly from a prior employee at Atlas so we know its true.

Unfortunately, I discovered all these negative things after I got my tattoo by Dan.
Everything seemed fine until the day of my appointment.

My appointment was scheduled at 4pm and I showed up a little early around 3:45. However, Dan was still tattooing someone and I had to sit in their uncomfortable chairs in the tiny waiting area for over 2 hours. While waiting, I couldnt help but notice how dirty the shop was. There was a couple cigarette buds and garbage on the ground. I almost left since I was a little uneasy about the condition of the shop.

Finally, around 6pm Dan was ready to begin my tattoo. Once Dan greeted me he seemed very stressed out and rushed. Again, I almost decided to leave or postpone my tattoo because I felt uncomfortable. However, I decided to go ahead and have Dan perform the work since I drove down from Vancouver.

This was a critical mistake The quality of work performed by Dan at Atlas was nothing short of HORRIBLE. The lines were not straight. The shading was very inconsistent and he got the colors all mixed up. Not to mention he tattooed to deep in some spots so now I have MAJOR SCARING in some of the areas. Overall, my tattoo experience with Dan and Atlas was a complete disaster.

I plan to PERMANENTLY append this review to Atlas Tattoos Google, Yelp and Facebook profiles among other online authority sites as an ongoing effort to inform the thousands of potential tattoo enthusiasts of my horrible experience with Atlas. Its my recommendation to choose an alternate shop like Optic Nerve Arts, Infinity Tattoo, Black Hole, Fortune Tattoo or Lady Luck tattoo. Please forewarn your friends and family not to use Atlas and make the same critical mistake I made.

Got my first tattoo yesterday by Jerry Ware. Beyond excellent job, made me feel totally comfortable; as soon as I met him I was way less nervous. Highly highly recommend. Clean shop, great artist!

So, I'm writing this review for 2 reasons: 1) Atlas needs some positive reviews (there haven't been ANY reviews since 2009); and 2) Obviously, I had a simply fantastic experience at the shop (in March of this year) that I feel compelled to share with all.

Back story: Dan and co. came to a tattoo convention in Austin, TX some years back. I'd checked 'em out online before the convention, liked what I saw, and Dan ended up doing a fabulous job on an elbow piece for me.

Recently: On a visit to PDX for a library convention, I decided to schedule some work with Dan, and boy oh boy am I a happy camper as a result. First and foremost, he TOTALLY got my vision for the tattoo. He created an original design for my arm (now what I'd consider to be 3/4 sleeved-ish) based on some ideas I had. Then, he worked on it until it was complete...nearly 5 hours later. It's beautiful, unique and exactly what I wanted.

Now for the really cool part of this whole experience: The dudes are SO friendly. I won't divulge all their secret closing-time activities, but I had a great time with these guys. This particular tattoo experience marks my second with Dan, and even though we live REALLY far apart, I'll continue to go to him for work as much as possible.

Bonus: super friendly and hilarious (and total hot piece of ass) shop boy Josh is great...and he's the first face you'll see when you walk in the joint. Good shot, Atlas!

Moral of the story: go to Atlas for all your tattoo needs (but call ahead cuz they're crazy busy). You won't regret it.

I would have felt comfortable under the gun of any of the tattooists at Atlas, but I chose Dan Gilsdorf. He knocked it out quickly and skillfully. Absolutely beautiful work! I will be going back.

I came here back in october a little over 2 years ago to see Scott. He's a great artist. I came in with a sketch and idea of what i wanted and when he drew up his own version for me it was perfect. He seemed to really know what i was going for and picked up on my style perfectly. My tattoo still looks as good as it did the day it was done and i continue to get compliments on it. This place is a must if you want quality work. It may take some time to get in to talk to them, but it's definately worth the wait and It's worth the money. I will be back for my second tattoo soon.

I recently had a large tattoo of a Great Blue Heron standing on a human heart forever inked on my left calf. Lou is an awesome artist with a great eye for detail. If you are gonna get one or add to your total, this is a shop you won't regret going to.

Since moving up here a couple years ago from the Bay Area,Ca.. I have been dying to get some more ink done. A friend recommended Atlas, after seeing the work they did for him, I knew I'd go to Atlas. I didn't have an appointment being it was a birthday gift from my husband, we walked in and I was helped by Josh. He spoke to Lew and gladly fit me into his busy schedule and knocked it out I swear in less than 20 mins. Though my tattoo wasn't a huge piece, Lew did a fantastic job. Everyone was extremely polite, honestly I don't think i've ever been to a place where everyone was just so polite. Lew has wonderful chair side manners, he made me feel so comfortable it was unreal. All I have to say is that I've got more work I'd like to have done, I plan on getting my work done by Lew and possibly get in to see Jennifer in the new year. Atlas is the place to go in my opinion. Thanks guy!!!

If you are looking to get a new tattoo and don't know where to go, THIS IS THE PLACE! My sister and I wanted to get tattoos together before she left for college and Atlas came highly recommended to us from another tattoo artist. Jerry Ware did a fabulous job of taking our ideas and turning them into beautiful tattoos. The shop was very clean and had a welcoming vibe. I will be going back!
* All of the artists are very talented and are booked out well in advance, it may take a while to get your new tattoo but it is totally worth the wait!

I had my tattoo done by Lewis Hess on 6/13/08 and could not be happier! He drew up a killer design and completed it within the time frame that was talked about at the consultation. The shop crew was fun to be around and made me feel very comfortable and relaxed. I left there with not only a new tattoo, but with a piece of art that will be with me forever. Thanks Lewis!

I've never been one to rush anything I do. It took me over a year to decide what my 3rd tattoo was going to be. Once I had an idea, I needed an artist. I search hi and low. I read everything I could, and then I just talked to people. Everything I heard just kept leading me back to Dan at Atlas tattoo. The whole process was great. The only thing people can complain about was the waiting list, over 3 months. I did not have a problem with it because it gave me time to save up the money. Dan is a great artist and has great chair side manner. I love my tattoo and plan on going back for more. I?m sure there are other artist in Portland that are good at what they do and I don?t want to knock anybody?s talent or style. Dan and Atlas Tattoo worked for me. Take your time and do your homework and I?d be willing to be they would help you find what your looking for as well.

I'm from out of town and heard about their name from a friend living here, so I made an appointment to get some tatts here while visiting Portland. The one artist I booked didn't show up, and I had to come back for the second time around, and guess what, they messed up the date and month of my son's birthday. I didn't notice it while checking it out in the mirror when I left since it reflected in the mirror, until I got home ...This was bad, I would not recommend this place!!!

i had my second tattoo done a few years back, by jennifer at atlas (when they were still on broadway) and it looks just as fanastic today as it did day 1. she did a BEAUTIFUL job and was attentive and kind and very helpful with the art - even setting the text on the sort of antique typewriter i adored (unknowingly, but yay coincidence). i left the coloring entirely up to her and it is far more beautiful than i ever could have imagined it. now i wish i'd had it done in a more conspicuous place......
thank you, jennifer! when i think up something good for my 3rd, i'll be back!

If your going to get your body permanently altered with fine art, may I suggest Altas Tattoo. The staff is witty, friendly, down to Earth and possess unbounded talent. Jerry Ware has rendered stunning interpretations of my concepts in every instance. Oh yeah, and the lovely young lass manning the front desk makes my heart go pitter patter

I've been tattooed by some of the old-school big names, and have been with friends when they got tattoos in various places all over the country... from sketchy biker shops to top-notch houses of artistry. In my experience, Atlas is one of the best in the United States. Aside from first-class drawing and tatting skills (these guys are all artists in their spare time), the level of service is excellent. They did everything to make sure that I was getting EXACTLY what I wanted, where I wanted it, and took the time to explain to me the limitations of the medium and process, etc. When I was in the chair Jerry was funny and sweet, and the rest of the crew took the time to check in with me and do some friendly bantering. Three hours later I paid less than I would have in most other shops. My sister, who has been to other tattooists in Portland and who was with me at Atlas, says she won't ever get a tattoo anywhere else! Neither will I.

While I'll admit that they did a very good job on my tattoo, they were SO RUDE that I will NEVER go back there. Yes, it was my first tattoo, and yes, I was a little nervous under the gun - shouldn't a skilled professional tattoo artist be able to a handle that? I warned them that it was my first time and that I was a little nervous, but they were so incredibly rude to me, it was unbelievable. They were insensitive and insulting, said offensive things ABOUT me IN FRONT of me. It was surreal. I didn't know that civilized human beings acted like that. I have since gotten two more tattoos and plan on getting even more done, and I will never go back there. So what - you have a lot of tattoos, that makes you too cool for school? BS. Once a upon a time you were probably a nerdy dork who got picked on and decided to hide his insecurity and humiliation behind a pseudo-punk attitude, and you know what? No amount of tattoos is gonna change that. You ruined that entire experience for me when really, all you had to do was keep your mouth shut and the needle moving.

I went here after twelve years of searching for the perfect tattoo. Jerry really took care of me. He did an amazing job and it only took 45 minutes for a relatively large tattoo (4"x4"). Also he used my skin tone as part of the color pallett, totally brilliant. Every time it's visible I get compliments, and more importantly I'm thrilled with it. I can't recommend him enough - especially if you want a really colorful tattoo.

I took in to Dan a design I found in a flash magazine. Really liked the fact that many of the artists there have educational backgrounds in art and design. I explained the changes I wanted done to more fit my personality. Dan created a new look that I loved. I was having a cover up done and was very concerned that I get the right people to do it so I wouldn't end up with disastrouse results. It is incrediable and I get comments on it all the time.

I got my first tattoo done by Dan Gilsdorf at Atlas Studios. Dan does awesome work. He did a large back piece for me and I absolutely love it. Getting a tattoo was a big deal to me so I spent a long time shopping around. I asked a lot of people with great ink who did their work, I got referrals from people with tattoos, and from their friends who had tattoos. I did internet searches. I wanted the best in the city. I was lead again and again to "Dan at Atlas," so that's where I went, and I wasn't disappointed. He's so popular that it took me two months to get an appointment with him.

Jerry Ware's portfolio is really impressive as well. I'd have him to work any day. There are currently four artists at Atlas. They all like to do fairly unique stuff rather than the generic "Tasmanian Devil" work they like to poke fun at. They used to be on NE Broadway but they've recently moved to N Albina. The shop is clean and spacious. The people are friendly and helpful, a wealth of information. You can stop by and chat, they'll help you out and even refer you to someone else if they think the style of work you want would be better done my someone else they know at another shop. They are not hurting for work, so they can afford to be generous.

By the way, this is a tattoo shop. There is no body piercing (despite what the category listing suggests).

PROS: Really talented artists
CONS: Long waiting list (I had to wait two months for an appt.)

I've been tattooed before, in S.F. and Chicago, and tiny little Atlas studio is the best place I've ever been. The folks who work there are super nice, the shop is clean, clean, clean, the work is top-notch, and the prices are right. Expect a 1-2 month wait for an appointment, 'cause all body-art lovers "in the know" go there! Dan and Lew are especially great for Japanese-inspired designs.
