In Short
Dive-bar regulars as well as the hippest of the hipsters seek refuge from the crowded bar scene here among plastic sea creatures, shells, nets and pirate treasures. For those who need an added dash of entertainment, darts and video poker are available. Scattered along the walls, video poker machines are happy to gobble up cash. Darts throwers should be careful: The dark room, and potent cocktails make dart navigation a bit precarious.

Key Points

  • Live Music Friday & Saturday
  • All Sports Televised
  • Full Menu Served Until 2 am

The Inside Scoop

  1. Happy Hour - Drink specials are at the whim of the bartender and vary from night to night. Late night and into the wee morning hours, these happy hours are designed for those who prefer to witness the dawn.
  2. Save Money - Eat cheap from the late-night menu that includes options like pancakes, burgers or pizza for only $2. Served daily from 11pm to 2am.

a nice dive bar

by becca o. | top100 Top100 | Rank: 46

This place is nice. it's your standard bar, complete with cheap beer, greasy food, and plentiful TVs. It's a good place to watch football, and it's close and convenient to Hawthorne and Belmont.

it is funky

by Missi H. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 566

But we all went there from school and had a great time. The food was okay and the atmosphere as i said was different. Close to work and the people were all smiles and friendly. It was an okay place to party.

Jolly Roger

by charity r.

What can you say about the Jolly Roger? It's a cheap, threadbare and dependable dive bar that serves up strong drinks and oversized portions from their extensive food menu. Patrons run the gamut from aged barflys to rowdy frat boys to low-key locals. Pool, video poker, DJ nights and a comfortable atmosphere round out the Jolly experience.

best seafood ever!

by danyl p. | insider Insider | Rank: 14,335

my first experience with jolly roger was in hawaii. oh my goodness! to be seated next to the water where the fish is caught fresh, prepared and brought to your table is amazing! the staff is wonderful-you can tell that customer service is a priority with the jolly roger people.

Always loved this little spot

by zombiechic

I used to come in semi-regularly with a girlfriend from work for chicken strips, beer, and a few games of pool or some time on the megatouch. Always found it to be a good time. Prices are reasonable, staff is friendly and their are often live bands. Haven't been in for a while. Though I did stop in to meet a few friends randomly about a month ago and found that there was a reggae band performing, pleasant surprise! They were a great act, ended up staying a little longer then planned to enjoy the music.

Basically, this isn't a place I make it out to often, but am always looking forward to it when I do, and leave glad that I came.

Pros: Live bands, good location, friendly staff

Cons: little small

More Batter and Grease, Please!

by Oregonjaybird

Thank the maker they don't allow smoking anymore or I'd never be able to taste all of this mayonaise and grease on my fish batter. Plain and simple, this place is low on the quality scale all around - I dare not imagine when the last time the walls were scrubbed -but at least it doesn't tout itself as anything more.

Come get bloated on bad beer and pub food, then leave feeling sluggish with indigestion. It'll be a hoot for the whole family!

Pros: It's in a good area

Cons: Doesn't sell Tums

Pirate Bar in Portland, you know it

by exerrex

JR is a nice place to see some great live bands, check out D3, The Manimals, or the Quick and Easy Boys down there for a great time. Space is limited unless you grab a table or a bar spot. Drinks have been known to be decent there mostly because the bartender is only responsible for POURING drinks. That's right, you have to order from a waitress for a drink, and that is the stupidest thing I've ever encountered.

Pros: Good Live Music, Stiff Drinks

Cons: Service, Space

Dreamy Girl

by HIFromHI

Hi M. Saw you in the Stars. You Knew What was best and You Still Inspire!

Be Happy and know You're Special.

I hadn't known for some time, but we're friends with tension in that space up there where people interact...

Thanx for being my friend a lifetime ago, it helped me, and WAS fun, when all intentions were so pure, the icy lake, the Apple, the first look in the Hall @ NCS. Only the positive associations remain for me.

Profound Psychic Long Distance Good Will Connection...

I KNOW IT! :)

Agreed?

Take Care.

Pros: Fun, Beautiful, Satisfying, Wonderful, Inspiring, Risk Taker, Silly, Still Fun in my dreams..

Cons: Just purged all my stupidity and weakness right there, never had the chance to show who I really was. The wisdom via regret was tough, but necessary.

Find your inner harmonica

by ameranner

It'd been at least 6 years since I'd been to the JR. But on some random Sat. night a few months ago, a group of friends and I decided to stop in for a "quick pitcher". Yeah, right! With Earl and the Regae All-Stars on hand - our quick stop turned into closing down the ship! It's amazing the musical talents that emerge after only a few shots and a couple pitchers. Too bad the harmonica isn't more widely appreciated! Rock on Jodi!

Great atmosphere

by SKYSURFDAVE

Tacos on Tuesday rock and no parking hassle. Bartenders, waitresses all are friendly fast service, and no matter what game you want to watch, theyve got it.

Pros: parking, good people

Cons: no excuses to miss a game

always jolly at the roger!

by butterybarfly

I love this place! Good service, stiff drinks, and awsome happy hour deals ($2.00 a plate). I live in the neighborhood and this place never fails to save me from the crowded downtown scene on the weekends and not to mention fulfill my latenight food cravings. They play sports on the multiple tvs and they have a happening reggae band on the weekends. Deffinate must see for all the dive bar lovers in portland, come check it out when they renovate and expand in a few months.

Pros: Nice people and great deals

Cons: Sometimes a little crowded

Welcome Hoosiers!

by hoosierpres

The Jolly Roger has agreed to allow all Indiana alumni to watch Hoosier basketball on the big screen for the 2004-2005 season. The support for our group from the management has been great - and the full menu - from coffee and eggs to sandwiches and beer - means everyone is happy whenever the game is on. Come out and join us! It's a great place to hang out.

Jolly Roger returns

by ToddVania

When Jolly Roger left its orginal location at 39th and Powell, I was worried about where one of my favorite fish & chips places was going. I needn't have worried, however, the "new" location is even closer to my neighborhood!
The food here has always been great, as far back as I can remember, and, unlike most businesses, refuses to give in to the horrible Change Monster. The same sign out front, and decorations in the bar are still there.
I always go to the restaurant, though, the bar is always too full of 'regulars' to be truly enjoyable. The basic fish and chips, and deep-fried mushrooms are my faves.

Pros: Good food, Nostalgic decor, Good seating options

Cons: Bar people wandering, Small parking area, Loud bar noise
