Talk about a downhill slide; must be under new management. Its ironic the bar next door is translated into, The Sh*t but the bar manager, Melissa cannot tolerate cursing when you are asked to explain about the f**cking crazy service in the restaurant; it offends her. You know what offends me - being treated like merde. I had no idea they had become so high brow in the 10 minutes it had been since a hostess literally screamed in my face over moving a damn table a 1/4".

story comin atcha: A hostess scooted 2 tables next to our party and announced we were going to, be getting new neighbors, which would normally be fine since I have been coming here for 12 years, but this evening happened to be my birthday. I joked with my husband after the hostess walked away by pushing the corner of the table not even an inch over. I was apparently being watched; the hostess came back over and told me dont move the tables in an angry tone. I was only joking... and not with her. I went to the hostess desk to explain to the second hostess why I cared about the way it was done (my birthday, we were almost done, and the hostess' uncalled for tone). I was told, "no one cares" in response to explaining that it's my birthday...we did...the owner might. After some discourse head table hostess told me that I was lucky she was at work...presumably she was lucky to have a job. I struck a chord with my matching bad attitude & tone at this point, but I wasn't threatening anyone. The initial hostess must have told her I did something highly offensive because she screamed in my face, Dont move my tables and the restaurant turned. She offered a business card to complain. Sitting next to strangers was so far from my concern. The bar manager came over after the screaming hostess caught everyone's attention and told me nothing they said would make me happy; that was about all she said besides don't curse, it offends me. I curse...get over it and don't take a job at a place called "The Sh*t" if you are so sensitive. Im sorryhappy birthdaywe could have handled that betterhostess was having a rough night I can think of a few things she could try, but acting like there is no right to complain when your hostess, of all people, is out of line is a crazy business model. I have been there loads and for a party every year and I am thankful this dinner was without the kids and friends. I will not return, but then no one here cares if you return or not. You dont piss on your customers and follow that by acting like you dont want them there anyway.

Been here a few times and the food is good, not great. I dig the lounge/bar staff. The wait staff in the restaurant are almost a caricature of the WORST of Portland. They are better than you and do not have a problem letting you know.

Love, love, love the food here! The spicy mac with tomatoes is to die for. I love seeing how they'll wrap up my left overs too, it's different every time and I've seen some super extravagant ones, which is really fun. I try to fill up on apps to make sure I have some mac left over to take home :)

Came here for the first time last week, what a pleasure. OK, it was noisy and had to sit next to someone I didn't know (which turned out great), but the food was unbelievable! Just good 'ol comfort food. Homemade as you can get. The mashed potatoes had the peel in it, the gravy was REAL. the drinks were awesome. the only problem was the wait, but waiting in the bar wasn't bad at all

Just moved here and got a treat of my limited culinary experience. After reading about it on citysearch i was not to excited to go with some friends that insisted that the bad reviews were not worth reading. Apparently they aren't the only ones, we had to wait in line for 30 minutes to get a seat.
After going over the rather confusing menu, I ordered the pesto linguini as the waiter suggested it. Incredible.

I crave southern food and the thought of a great jambalaya makes my mouth water. Upon entering we were seated right away which was great. Then it was downhill from there. The waitstaff was too cool for school and acted like I was inconveniencing them by being a customer. I ordered the jambalaya and what I got was basically a stir fry. It was nothing like jambalaya, so much so I actually told the waiter that I think I received someone else's meal. I honestly did think that. After he snapped at me that it was what I ordered and stomped off I decided to ask for the check.

I was hoping this was going to be my go-to spot for comfort food but all I got was some leftover stir-fry in foil shaped like a swan.

Have been to this restaurant couple of times...
They were very informal ambience with the waiters shouting the orders randomly (or maybe specifically for one particular item).
The seating is also very informal, where you could be seated with other groups in that long table.
I love their jambalayas (both chicken, and alligator) - I order them extra spicy and they are just right spice level for me.
Their hushpuppies (appetizer) are also good (as an South Indian, they tasted like Mysore Bajji). I liked the gator bites appetizer as well. The special of fried okra was good too.
Their Blackened catfish was decent and Buttermilk fried chicken was ordinary.
However, the negative that I have observed at least in my 2nd visit was that they used a lot of oil in jambalaya - so much that I did not dare to finish the bottom portion of my meal. I guess when you dine at a Southern cuisine, you can't expect it to be a healthy meal.
Never got to-go food from them, they do a good job of packing the food in nice shapes.

The waiter put horseradish on our bread pudding, just too be mean.
Last night, a group of 10 friends and I were all very excited to try out Montage. It seemed fun and unique! It ended up only being unique, and not in a good way.
The service was ridiculously slow. But we were polite and patient anyways. We didn't wanna ruin our fun evening with complaints.
One member of our group came late and only ordered dessert, bread pudding. He ordered it at the same time as everyone else, but asked if he could have a separate check because thought it would make things easier. The oldish waiter told him "no", and our friend just said okay. We didn't think it was a big deal.
Then the waiter brought everyone dessert, handing our friend his bread pudding. He and a few others (including myself) scooped up a large bite. We had to spit it out. The waiter had replaced the frosting with Horseradish!
The Waiter was obviously trying to piss us off, a very pathetic thing to do especially considering he was at least 50 yrs old. He kept lurking around trying to see my friends reaction. To disappoint him we just acted like nothing was wrong. I wanted to flip out but no one would let me.
Worst restaurant experience of my life.

Pros: Open Late. Some foods okay

Cons: terrible service. employees may put nasty stuff in food.

I am from Portland and have gone to this establishment since I was 15. I really don't like all the super negative talk on here.
Firstly, the ages and attitudes of the waitstaff vary and change. Some staff stays for a long time and some move on quickly. You can't judge the whole place based on a bad experience with someone who may not have worked there long after that.
Also, my favorite waiter ever from any place I have ever gone was a waiter at the Montage. He worked there for years was sweet and funny and awesome and I miss him even though I only knew him from the restaurant.
The place is owned by different people than it used to be and even before that the mac and cheese shrunk due to inflation I'm sure, but my daughter was one of the first babies to come in there regularly and they would just pull out their one big comfy chair for us to sit in everytime and no one treated us weird even if it was 1am. So I love the Montage. Like many places I loved it better before, but alot of that for me is about the different customer base as much as the shrunken plate size.
There are some places that are sacred to me as symbols of a Portland culture that has managed to be preserved. The Montage is one of them.

I used to work at this restaurant and it was a sad thing, lemme tell ya... My treatment as an employee was so unprofessional that I was forced to quit. I could not work in such an environment. With that aside, yes- the food is pretty satisfying late night and/ or when you are drunk however, I feel the reason for the unnecessary attitude from the staff is due to the fact that the majority of them are in their late teens/early 20's and they think it is cool to be so rude. The fact that they get away with it is because it is encouraged by the management team: it's the tired, old schtick of the Portland wannabe hipster kids; you get service without a smile. Pass?, yes- but they have not caught that yet. So, when you go out to eat late night and Montage is your only option, just remember that a kid's ego is fragile so go easy on 'em and feel a little pity for them! They will grow up soon enough.

Last night a group of my friends and I headed out to Montage for some late night mac & cheese. I've heard about the amazing mac & cheese for years, and last night was my first visit to Montage.

From the moment we sat down, the server was very unfriendly. We arrived in a group of ten people and were seated at a very long table with more than enough seats. Six more people joined us right away, and the waitress acted like it was a huge inconvenience. There were plenty of seats, literally they just needed to wipe the table. She said we needed to check them in with the host first, then abruptly walked away. The host said it was no problem for them to sit at our table. The food arrived quickly and was very good. Not the best I've had, but definitely satisfactory.

When we got our bill, we were all on one check. Everyone put in cash, except a guy who had given the server his credit card when we got there. He told her to put the rest on his card, and she asked him to give it to her. He said he already had and she started yelling at him that he was wrong. She said maybe it was at the bar, then told him to go check and let her know when he had it ready for her. (If she had taken his card in the first place, wasn't it her job to find it???) The guy argued with her, and she was full out screaming at him in the middle of the restaurant. Not very professional. The manager tried to talk them down, then simply walked away to let them battle it out. Nice. Finally the guy gave the server a different card, and she made him sign the receipt and escorted him to the door. Then she told the rest of us we needed to leave. Some of us were still eating and drinking, and nobody else had said a single word to her. I was furious.

When we left, the guy called the bank to cancel his "lost" card, and found out that Montage had charged the original card TWICE, and charged the second card. I was thoroughly unimpressed by Montage, and no quality of food is worth what I experienced last night. I will not be returning.

For all of you naysayers that do not patronage Le Bistro Montage because of a past rude server experience during the dinner or after-dinner hours, let me just say that their weekend breakfast (served between 10:30-1:00) is not only to die for and reasonably priced, but also served in a hurry by a very pleasant, friendly server with a beautiful smile. The orange juice is fresh-squeezed, the eggs were perfectly prepared, and the omelet choices were not your average selection. In addition, they even offer a BLT for $4.00! The chicken-fried steak & eggs were delicious, served with seasoned hash browns and toast for only $6.00. My husband loved his andouille sausage & peppers omelet, too. To sum it up, The Montage weekend breakfast experience is definitely NOTHING like the dinner crowd. Four thumbs up (there were two of us)!

Long time customer and I have yet to understand why a few of the waiters insist on the New York snooty attitude, they get the food out to us, they check to see if the drinks are OK, but all with an attitude. Granted, it's a tough job and you have to be smart, fast, and have a good memory to be a waiter, but being NICE makes a waiter more MONEY. That simple. It's NICE to be NICE, and when you are nice you make MORE MONEY. Most of the waiters at Montage are nice, just a few of the low self esteem waiters like to take it out on the customer, then they wonder why their tips are low. hmmmm.

But the Food (try the chicken drumstick dinner) and the drinks (try the savory side car) and the ambience makes any imature (she'll get it someday, or shell just go on in life an unhappy person) watier worth the trip

Montage is truly a "YOU'VE GOT TO GO TO" restaruants.

You can't come to Portland and not go the Montage. We go there every time we visit. Always looking for something different when we travel, every city has the usual restaurants with the usual food and the usual service. That is why we go to Montage.....different. if I want the same brass hand rail chain laminated photo menu schtick I would stay home. Food is cheap and very tasty. Although the consistantcy leaves a little to be desired, it is worth it as when you step into Montage you step out of your world into another place in time. No TV's, no corporate sucking up, just good food at a good price. To our surprise we went on 1/2 price wine night. All wines were 1/2 price. It's cheap enough to begin with but at 1/2 price it was a killer deal.

We went to Le Bistro Montage last night for the first time, and I was very impressed! The food was awesome, the atmosphere was great, and the waitress was attentive and great of filling up our waters - which was needed for their delicious spicy fares! I can't wait to take out of town guests to this neat little place under the bridge!!

Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Service

Had a very bad experience with a female bartender, who ended up kicking a member of our party out of the bar for basically no reason. It is true that he was very slightly inebriated, but she was on his case from the minute he walked in the bar & was extremely rude for no reason. The lady obviously had a chip on her shoulder & was even rude to my 60-something year old parents that were with us!! On a different visit, our waitress made a comment about the 12% tip we left for poor service--she probably shouldn't have even gotten one, but we are typically good tippers.

It makes me so very sad to only be able to give the Montage 2 stars. Really, it does. It used to be an old reliable standby where you could get some tasty grub very late at night and have a decent time doing it. Now, it's where I risk going late at night and *hope* my food has been consistently WARMED before being served to me and that my waitress isn't a TOTAL hag and maybe stops by once or twice to see if I need water.

It's always been loud and it's always been crowded, but it used to be well worth the wait for some cheap and delicious "spold mac". Now the flavor balance of a LOT of the dishes is off (some things way spicier than they used to be or need to be, some dishes way over or under seasoned) and the consistency of the kitchen is questionable at best. On two separate occasions I have literally been served food that was cold on the inside (a warm pasta dish should not be half hot, half cold!).

And don't get me started on the service...

Now, if that didn't scare you off, here are the good parts... the macaronis are GREAT (when they're warm) and cheap. Spold mac used to be my old standby, but it's now way too spicy, so I often go for 'old mac'. The gator bites and frog legs are also pretty darned tasty. The ambiance is neat with the murals and high ceilings, even though it gets way too loud and despite the fact that the staff often seems more into themselves than serving their guests.

So if you're out late and need a cheap bite, give it a shot. If not, I'd go somewhere more reliable and leave this one for the drunken late-night fill-me-up.

I went to this place three times. The first two times it was so busy we waited for an hour an a half, and gave up and left. When we finally get there, we ordered gator jambolya. IT WAS DISGUSTING! It was thick goop, that had a red oil layer on top. The environment is pretty lousy, and tons of unwanted noise. This place is bullsh*t and I would never reccomend it.

This place is good for one thing - after hours dining. Get there late, wait forever for service, and have a great time sobering up so you can sleep.

Well, first off it was loud, dark, and strange. I could see straight in the kitchen and the horridly filthy conditions and lack of hair nets or proper food handling I saw immediately turned me off. But I was with a group and couldn't leave. The food was terrible, inedible. and the server refused to split the check for a party of 12 people and would only take max of 5 debit cards. Flies kept buzzing our food and the bathrooms were disgusting. I was sick as soon as I left from the little bit I ate, and the next day the rest of the party that hadn't been sick immediately, complained of being sick.
All in all, I would never go again, and never recommend it to anyone. And I never write bad reviews or judge a place on one visit, so it really was that bad.

best thing about montage are the late hours and funny aluminum animals create with the remainder of your meal. they have your typical noodles, gumbo, some meat dishes, but the taste wasn't amazing. you're paying a bit more purely for the dark candle light atmosphere with very loud music and tons of strangers. if you're around the area, looking to experience a place with a darker setting, this might be what you're looking for, but it's far from "amazing."

Montage is like no other restaurant I have ever encountered. I remember my 1st visit to the original location up on Morrison in the little red building, I met Old Mac. When they moved down to under the bridge it became all about late nights with spold (it was way more cool when it was an "in the know " item), shooters, and $1 bottles of Rainier. I find the spold is more spicy than it used to be so now now I order old mac and a cup of the Cajun gravy to mix in to my taste. If you have never eaten here you are missing out, remember to save some leftovers for your foil sculpture!

When I first moved to PDX after living in a city with an actual nightlife, I was sad to hear that the only place to eat after the club was Shari's. But when I heard about Montage, I got excited.

I have lived here for several years now, and while I have been to Montage on many occasions, I think I will choose Roxy's or Hot Cake house, as the food wasn't that much better at Montage, and the host staff in incredibly rude, seemingly on purpose. They must have heard somewhere that in order to be taken seriously, you need to treat your customers like you have something better to do than be assisting them. I find this attitude a real downer, and considering I am a good looking, well groomed person with cash on hand, you'd think they'd want me to frequent their establlishment? Not the case, or atleast, you'll be left feeling that way.

I will say the food was decent. while overpriced for what it is, and the wait staff seems to have good dispositions, so it's always there, as a fall back, if nothing more.

Best mac n' cheese! I always get the spold mac and my husband always gets the jambalaya. Both are always excellent, we are never disappointed. We have been coming here for years at least once a month and it never fails to please.

I evacuated to Portland from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Having been raised in the South I'm very familiar with the cuisine this establishment(I refuse to call it a restaurant) claims to serve. Having been raised by human beings I am somewhat aware of how to behave in a public place amongst other human beings who are trying to eat...apparently, the hipster staff here wern't fortunate enough to receive that training and my boyfriend and I found that out first hand the other night.
This is one of the few "cajun" themed places to eat in PDX and I was excited to get some catfish and frog legs. I know I am not in NOLA and I really wasn't expecting some kind of culinary masterpiece with great customer service from the place but it would have been nice if they could learn that 1) BLACKENED CATFISH DOES NOT MEAN COMPLETELY BULLETPROOF OVERSEASONED CATFISH SHELL WITH A BLAND UNSEASONED CATFISH CENTER. 2) Frog legs should not be giant blobs of FAIL fryed in WTF batter. 3) It's customary to seat people BEFORE making them stand around in a mostly empty bistro for 15 minutes 4) Two adults are going to eat more than the 2 slices of bread you so laboriously dropped on the table 5) If making a decent margarita is beyond the scope of your abilities don't try to overcompensate by throwing too much(clearly cheap) tequila in...even if you're trying to make it a double there's an art to it. 6) The ONLY way wrapping people's scraps in aluminum foil shapes/animals is going to compensate for sitting through that meal is if you shape it like a giant phallus and service yourself with it VIOLENTLY.

To anyone considering eating here- I advise you to go elsewhere if you're looking for genuine soul food/southern style cooking. This place is like a caricature of decent southern food. All the positive reviews for this place are highly suspect IMO. If you're looking for catfish around pdx the only good place I've found so far is called Po' Shine's Cafe on N. Killingsworth

The place is buried under a highway and inside it is dark candle-lit. The decor and surroundings are not the greatest. But the food was probably one of the top 5 I have had in Portland.

They are famous for their mac and cheese entrees. I ordered the Pesto mac n' cheese that came with diced tomatoes in the corner of the plate and fresh shredded Parmesan on top. It was simple, yet blended together perfectly. Don't be shy to ask for more tomatoes! I also ordered the fried pear salad which was delicious and unique. The bill came out to less than $10.

The service was very attentive and friendly. Great place, inexpensive, and a real find.

If you are looking for a fun and interesting restaurant experience Montage is definitely the place to go. They have exotic foods such as alligator and frog legs but your basic foods too. I would suggest trying one of their many gourmet mac and cheese entrees. One of my favorite things about this restaurant is the to-go boxes. They wrap your leftovers with tin foil in different shapes such as animals and swords!

While we had a fun time eating at Montage, the food wasn't killer, and it came to the table leukwarm. The communal seating makes people-watching a must, but means you'll have little privacy. Although, it did allow us to watch the girls next to us eat their oyster shooters without having to eat them ourselves. The drinks were interesting and fairly cheap.

Its a human zoo. Like eating at the Star Wars Cafe, right out of a movie ! And the food is creative, consistent, reasonably priced, nicely varied and very 'Nawlins' ... VERY. Its a night in the French Quarter. GREAT FOOD, BEST Cajun in the Northwest, and a freak show, starting with e cooks and the insane but efficient wait staff. Kudos my friends, KUDOS. Job Well Done. Open a second one near NW23rd or NW21st streets and you'd have an instant success.

Cons: Parking can get tough, Ya really need to pick your times or the lines go on for hours ! Tey don't accept reservations at all. Bummer

The de rigueur of South East Portland is still standing after all these years...and it's better than ever! Try the Frog legs and the Rabbit...They're excellente! The drinks are moderately priced and stiff! They don't hold back at all. The ambiance is what Portland used to be...You know that bumper sticker that says, Keep Portland Weird? Well this place is still hitting the nail on the head. Totally! The floor staff and the kitchen crew sure know how to interact and rope you into all their fun! And they're fast and efficient, not like most of the other places around town; These guys should teach the rest of Portland how to "cook to order", it really shouldn't take that long. It's like quick, delicious dinner and a free show all in one. It's so much fun! It's also cheap! So order two or three things when you get there, even if you can't finish them...You're going to wish that you would have...You'll see! (Wink! Wink!) It's the best part of this wonderful, old Portland establishment. Oh...And make sure you tell the owner to delete the recording. He'll know what you mean.

Excellent back country style cajun food. He loves the spicy spam mac and bobo. And my favorite is the the blackened catfish or oysters. Super appetizers and lots of main dishes - the food is always great. The desserts are wonderful. Yes, the menu hasn't changed - but that's part of what we like best about it. Our favorites are always there and once in awhile, we try what will usually become a new favorite..

It is definitely quirky and some of the waiters a bit odd. It's loud and it's fun. Kids are continually amazed by the foil wrapped leftovers - and that's who these are really for.

If you are looking for some place different, and don't mind bustle and noise, the place is great.

CONS: Opens pretty late for us (6) , since we live out of town.
