I was initially excited to try Hawthorne Cafe but after trying breakfast I was very disappointed. The potatoes were neon yellow and left stains on the plate, eggs benedict was warm and had way too much sauce, and the mango crepes were sour and tart-like. Our server was extremely friendly and the service was great, but the food was disgusting! To make it worse, one of the water cups had things floating in it and my silverware had dried up food stuck on the outside.

I love this place for weekend breakfast. The wait is long (as it is most places around here), but worth it. The vibe is high energy, but relaxed eating. Tables are squeezed into every nook and cranny of this old house. A wonderful experience and cost effective over all.

I've noticed that negative reviews by random people can sometimes be absurdly harsh, so I thought I'd look up a place I know for comparison. I've been here, I'm sure nearly a hundred times. So let me say a few things about it:

The food is not going to make you swoon but it's good, it's extremely consistent (there will not be two hairs on your plate), and it is not over priced.

Like the food the wait staff is consistently above average, and never have an attitude.

I cannot warn you strongly enough about the coffee!

The owner is a character, he's foreign and the cultural gap is dramatic. Especially if he knows you well enough to come over and commandeer your table's conversation for 20 minutes, which will happen if you frequent the place . He can be hard on his staff but it's because he genuinely treats them like sons and daughters not because he's mean.

The ONLY customers I have ever seen him take to task are any that are abusive to his 'kids'. Otherwise he's one of the most friendly people I've ever known.

Pros: The crêpe special, and comfortable atmosphere

Cons: The coffee is brutal, the fruit cups are silly.

I've always loved this restaurant, and it's high time to share. The owner/manager is simply a wonderful man to have serve your breakfast. The food choices are interesting - always fresh & delicious. The coffee is strong & plentiful, the juice exceptionally fresh. Over the 20 years I've been enjoying having breakfast at this cafe, I've probably tried everything on the menu, but my favorites are the omelets. They are a perfect size, fluffy, light and the filling ingredients are of the highest quality. Fruit is always an option to have with any meal, and the side potatoes are marvelous.

This is a great example of why I love "mom and pop" businesses. The owner is often there greeting and waiting tables. He is professional and a complete pleasure. The food is great too. My husband and I just had an omlette and a marionberry pancake- scrumptious! One of the best omlettes I've had in a long time. To top off the experience, they had someone playing guitar and singing wonderful music- perfect atomosphere. I could have sat there all day. A must for Sunday morning brunch!

Horrible food! We ate here on 8/30. I ordered a simple omelette; what I was served wasn't even close to my order. Server was very apologetic, and they made the correct one quickly. We could see and hear everything in the kitchen; the owner was verbally berating the cooks, who didn't seem to understand English. The owner was just awful to them. The accompanying potatoes were a strange orange color; I couldn't swallow them! My 13 year old, who was starving and eats anything, said his pancakes were disgusting, and he didn't eat anything but his side of blah ham.
Even the coffee was bad! The only thing I ate was the untoasted English muffin.

Each weekend, we would search online to find a new cafe or diner to go to. Not too long ago, we were by chance, driving past Hawthorne Cafe while making our way to another location. We did not like the ambiance of our weekend choice, so we headed back to the beautiful antique corner house on Hawthorne. There we were greeted with smiles, welcomes, and "I Love You's" from the owner. We found the staff and owner to be refreshing, friendly, obliging and humourous. Our breakfast was so flavorful that we were wanting to hold onto the taste far into the morning. We returned the following weekend, where not only were we greeted in the same manner, but the owner remembered us, our order and our preference for coffee. We have been back numerous times now, and each has been a relaxing and enjoyable experience. The food is fantastic, the karma positive, and the staff incredible. So to you Moe, I Love You too!

The only good thing about this resturant is the server. My 3 friends and i went there for lunch today. I ordered the eggs florentine, and one of my friends ordered the chicken salad sandwich. My other friend had a chicken gyros. My eggs florentine was awfull!!!. Absolutely awful. My friend who had the chicken gyros also was greatly dissapointed as it tasted and smelt like fish. now, i understand that in a resturant things happen and sometimes the food may not be what one may expect, however, that is not the worst of it. The way that everyone involved was treated (including the server), was absolutely apauling. First off, i told the server that i did not like the taste of the eggs benedit. She appologized and then soon after the owner came to our table and became confrontational with me. He proceeded to tell me that hollandaise sauce is supposed to be served cold and so on. Then he turned around and yelled at his server in front of everyone in that resturant. I felt absolutely awful for that girl. It was not her fault that the owner does not know how to cook. I will absolutely never, ever return to this establishment again. This man has no idea how to treat a customer or his employees and his food is absolutely disgustind

Visited Hawthorne Cafe today and couldn't believe how we were treated by the owner. Their marionberry coffee cake was burnt and the owner would not substitute another item or credit the bill a little. He, you will not believe this, cut off the black part on the bottom and returned it to our table. We left completely dazed and could not believe what had just happened. I highly recommend you skip this place!

decided to stop in while i waited for a neighboring store to open. i was sincerely and very pleasantly welcomed. i didn't eat, i just had a few mimosas (which were very good and reasonably priced) and was still treated very well. i have been to many places where service seriously declines once the staff learns you will not be spending money on food-this was far from the case here. the people at the tables around me ordered food that looked very good, and even though i wasn't hungry, the smell almost enticed me to eat anyway. my experience leads me to believe that there is yet another owner since other reviewers have posted, or that they just went at the very wrong time-the staff that was present during my visit was attentive and i don't think the "boss" would dream of yelling at anyone-ever! i will definitely return to try the food. :)

We really love this place. The building is perched up high which makes for great people watching too! The food is better than any breakfast place I know of for the money. Go for the omelets, a sure fire win. I don't care for the Benedict here nor the salsa but overall its highly recommended. The staff are wonderfully perky to boot.

i gave this place a try for the first time today. just looking for a simple breakfast, i had very low standards walking in. the server was charming and my meal arrived promptly. my side of hollandaise, however was gloppy, ice cold, and electric orange(strangely the potatoes had so much turmeric that they were almost the same color). worse, the sauce didn't even taste like hollandaise. i have been a professional cook for 10 years and recently managed a breakfast joint. i know how one of the mother sauces taste and know that ice cold hollandaise is broken. (unless it's cut with a starch... yuk/why). i politely sent back the sauce and salvaged what i could from my plate. before i finished my meal the cook/owner approached my table and launched into a tirade, ticking off points on his fingers. he explained that:
-using egg yolks make a sauce electric orange
- the health inspector would shut him down if he held his hollandaise warm
-and anyway his recipe is very good.
these are all lies. there is no truth in any of them. he then told me that when he serves a benedict, he simply pours the ice cold sauce over the warm poached egg and it all evens out to a nice tepid. this, while likely the truth, made me glad i hadn't ordered a benedict.
i don't know what bothers me more:
-he not only served but defended this poor quality food or
-he made time to berate a customer for not enjoying it.
well hathorne cafe, when you get tired of serving that slop put the word out. im sure there are plenty of people who could run a real restaurant in that space.

A charming Victorian Home renovated into a lovely restaurant. The glassed in porch is gorgeous. The place holds a remarkable number of tables, so there's rarely a significant wait, but with the three or four small rooms, one never feels like one is eating in a crowd. The small rooms also help to cut noise so one can actually have a conversation without straining to hear. Service has always been professional and courteous. My boyfriend and I arrived there once an hour before the normal opening time and the gentleman I believe to be the owner welcomed us in and quickly got us fed and caffeinated. The food is usually very good - particular favourites are the marionberry pancakes and the Mexican potatoes. They're always happy to let me order their omlettes as scrambles. Oh! And the crepe special is wonderful! It comes with the crepe of the day, plus one Eggs Benedict or Florentine and potatoes. The perfect mix of sweet and savory - YUM!

I am really surprised to read all of the negative reviews of the Hawthorne Street Cafe... I've been there twice and I have been absolutely satisfied both times. The first time I went I was with a group of people- the waitress handled the group perfectly well and the food was not to die for but it was good. Last week I went with my mother and sat outside and ordered the breakfast burrito and it was delicious. In fact, I have been talking about it so often that I went on citysearch only to find the exact address so I could go back for another breakfast burrito! This place isn't gourmet breakfast, but they don't claim to be. If you're in the mood for a reasonably priced meal that tastes good and is in a nice, friendly environment, go to Hawthorne Street Cafe. Oh, and my mother ordered the daily crepe (it was apple that day) and she, highly opinionated about food, loved the crepe!

We sat at a table in a room that slanted downhill at a far more than noticeable degree and I thought ok, this might be fun. Coffee came 10 minutes later in cups so worn the glaze had gone and the surface was pourous and rough like a loofa on my lips but that wasn't too problematic either since the server only metered out 1/3 cup doses of coffee at a time and with a comically unsteady hand and unsure demeanor making the 1/3 cup the safest bet. Food was fairly prompt however lacking in half the ingredients posted, completely without toast at all and with what must be the newest trend of Half Raw Bacon. Delicious when washed down with the nothing we were given to drink. Ah shoot, time to pay up and go. Even though it has been awhile and no bill so I wander up to the counter where I am ignored and shuffled out of the way by the disgruntled wait staff, probably in perpetual fear of the drill seargent owner demeaning them from the open kitchen for another long while and finally say please, can I pay you for my fabulous experience? Handing them my passport card which is valid and I saw the person in front of me use theirs. In reply the waitress hissed that she just can't deal with that or any card and to just pay cash as she just can't be bothered.

Lovely divine experience. Left me filled with pleasant thoughts the rest of the day.

Cons: The door opens to let people in.

We stood outside for at least 20 minutes waiting to be seated at an outdoor table and the waitress forgot about us. They were shortstaffed-only 1 waitress for the entire outdoor seating area. The table never got wiped down, we never got the coffee we ordered and the $7 veggie sandwich was wonder bread with sundried tomato cream cheese spread, 2 slices of tomato and 1 piece of avocado. I'm definitely not returning.

i would rate this zero or even negative stars if i could.
we were desperately hungry and looking for a nice place to eat in a day when most restaurants were closed. i had eaten at hawthorne st. cafe about 2 years ago and remembered amazing berry coffee cake and corn griddle cakes so we thought we'd give it another go. CLEARLY this place must have changed hands. ihe restaurant was incredibly dirty and grungy---as was the food. the 'pancakes' were dry and flavorless. they had attempted to make curry potatoes and failed horribly ( i am indian and know what curry potatoes should taste like!). the service was non-existent as the waitress just plopped dirrty looking bottlesof tabasco and jam as she passed by (but not at the same time our meal came out). we felt like we was being robbed by being presented with a bill for such a miserable experience. it was an upsetting experience and i will not only NEVER go back but also warn everyone i know not to waste their money or time! what an insult to the food scene of portland to have such a horrendous restaurant in town!

I am sure the Health Dept will be shutting this place down soon. Seriously rude owner/host. He was actually seen yelling at wait staff when they would not take fruit cup off of a customer's plate as it was not part of the special deal. He then served that same fruit cup to another customer!!! Gross! That's gotta be a health code violation, right? We felt really bad for the server as you could tell she was trying, but got absolutely no guidance or help from the owner. We think she was new cuz she kept asking him to show her what he wanted done. I guess it must be hard for him to keep employees if he's so mean to everyone...including customers! Not one smile or thank you while there. To be sure, we won't be back! Disgusting!

My friend and I decided to go here since Cup and Saucer was swamped on a Sunday morning. Now I wish we'd waited for C&S. First off, there is no access for the disabled to this building!! My friend has cerebral palsy and we had to get up a flight of stairs to get to the place. Once we got in, we were seated quickly, but the waitress was brusque and disinterested. I ordered eggs benedict and a marionberry pancake; the hollandaise sauce was cold, and the pancake was TINY compared to what we Portlanders are used to (maybe 4" across and thin, more a crepe than a pancake). The home fries were covered in some sort of weird Indian spice (cumin? curry? tumeric? saffron? who knows?). My friend got the tofu scramble, and the tofu was squishy and gross. To sum up: The restaurant is cool in the sense that you can look out the huge windows and watch passersby on Hawthorne, but the food & service stinks, and they need to get a ramp for people with disabilities.

Pros: Great view of Hawthorne freakazoids and hipsters

Cons: Small portions, lousy service

.

After reading some negative reviews online, I was hesitant to take my visiting family there for Sunday brunch. I decided to anyway, and was pleasantly surprised. I tasted the mango crepe, eggs benedict, and my partner's veggie omelet. Contradictory to previous posts, the food was actually pretty good - simple, fresh, and cheap compared to some other restaurants I've been to in Portland. While I wouldn't consider it cuisine to die for, I would definitely recommend it to someone looking for some cheap sunday brunch in a homey environment.

I should've known by the lack of a line and the many tables available, on a Sunday morning, what I had in store. The server was clearly inexperienced or maybe new and I gave her the benefit of the doubt. She had no idea what kind of coffee they served and when it was brought out, it was cold. I got up to ask the gentleman who seemed to serve as a manager and the host if I could have an expresso instead. He was shouting at the servers and acted put out when I asked him and jestured for me to ask my server. The food was delivered quickly, but came out looking completely unappetizing. The potatoes were cooked with Turmeric (?) and the cheese on the scramble resembled Velveeta. The waitress would come and go without checking in on us, mind you she had less than 5 tables. The manager was clearly angry and frustrated and didn't make any attemp to hide it. Uncomfortable, awkward and pretty much unpalatable food. The restaurant could use a good cleaning and a revamping of wait and cook staff. I love food, am truly not that picky, and will eat in a hole-in-the-wall if it's good. Trust me on this one, save yourselves!

I had heard great things about this place so I was very disappointed when I finally went for breakfast. Service was TERRIBLE - I think the wait staff was competing to find out who could give the worst service. Food was "ok," but it didn't make up for the length of time we had to wait (nearly 50 minutes after we ordered!) and the terrible service.

Something tells me dr_god's review is somehow biased. Unless we're not talking about the same restaurant that is... I am more along the lines of the other folks here who have posted reviews about high prices and mediocre meals. My wife had a pretty decent meal (minus the gnat in her eggs). My sister in-law had a scramble and honestly I've never seen a smaller main dish ever. We brought it up to the waitress and she got Moe, the owner. He brought a menu and then in a very argumentative manner showed us how it says it only comes with 2 eggs. When we explained that the last time it had been different he went on a tirade about how bad his cooks are and how they don't listen to him and then just walked off. Weird! On a positive note it came with marionberry coffee-cake, which was good. I had the high protein breakfast, which was oatmeal w/peanut butter and fruit. The fruit was all out of season and as such pithy and not good. The oatmeal was decent, but nothing special. Overall the food left little to write good things about. I will say the wait staff was friendly to our 10 month old, bringing him bananas and a cool toy to play with. The waitresses were all nice and I'd say one of the best parts of this restaurant, but it's hard to praise the service when the owner is such a jeerk.

With Cup & Saucer only a few blocks away I'd rather have an hour wait there than eat at the Hawthorne Street Cafe. Frankly I am shocked to see it has such a high ranking. This place is nowhere near the quality of the Cadillac, Roux, Cup & Saucer, Cricket or Tin Shed.

My date and I just finished breakfast, and I left a little disappointed. I had the crepe special with the fruit of the day - peaches, it came with a half order of florentine benedicts and house potatoes. For almost $9, I thought I didn't get very good quality or quantity. The crepe was tiny tiny tiny and the florentine had obvious frozen spinach and no sauce which made it kind of gross. The curried house potatoes were okay - kind of odd because they weren't curried enough to really hold on their own, but didn't taste right with ketchup either. My date had 2 buttermilk pancakes which he deemed to be slightly glorified bisquick pancakes and the gyro omlette which he said was pretty good. Overall though I would say it is quite overpriced and I don't think I'll be going again.

Pros: cute restaurant, outdoor seating w/dogs ok, good service, nice owner

Cons: overpriced, below average quality

i think that the person who posted the review that was talking hella shite about the cafe works for that coniving cup and saucer cafe where everyone is a snob and wants to steal the busniess away from the good places. Hawthorne cafe is awesome and BTW, the potatoes are yellow becasue they have curry on them (yummy). Whoever posted the bad stuff about the owner and the potatoes is either stupid or works for cup and saucer and wants to steal the busniess.

Pros: Its awesome. Good people and Good food and a nice place to read a book

Cons: People who work at cup and saucer try to ruin it for everyone

My friend and I decided to stop in for Sunday breakfast, she had been there before and wasn't impressed but had heard it changed owners and was willing to give it a shot. Our waitress was nice and so was the rest of the staff except I think the owner was there and we were also greeted by him standing at the front counter yelling at the staff to clean something up - and to be honest it really put me off. Anyway, I got the #6 omlette and my friend got the #6 tofu scramble. The service was FAST - and when the waitress set the food on the table we found out why. My friend literally gasped and said "Whats this!?" Her tofu scramble was a kids portion-and looked no where near appetizing, and had ZERO flavor. The english muffin was an english crouton, the mimosa's were okay, but very small - and honestly not worth $4.50. On a lighter note, at one point we were laughing so hard at this breakfast catasrophe I thought they would ask us to leave, (which actually would have been welcomed)- but atleast this place provided a few good laughs and tears. Our country potatoes were yellow - like neon yellow, but only on the outside and were underdone and my omlette was not fluffy - and was completely over done. However - what ever white creamy sauce/ cheese stuff was combined with the sundried tomatoes and artichoke hearts on the inside of my omlette was delicious and I see potential - but really, get some cooks in there that know what they're doing.

My friends and I stopped here for lunch yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised by the menu. From appearances they would seem to be a simple sandwich place. I had a great gyro sandwich with fresh fruit salad on the side. There was so much that I shared and still had leftovers.
The service was wonderful. My coffee didn't get cold, the owner came out to greet us personally and our waitress was very cheerful!
I will be back here again!

PROS: Great menu and service
CONS: Small but it works

I saw the ups and downs but thought the restaurant had improved with new owners. The food was over done, burnt pancakes and shriveled sausage for me. Then pancakes on a cold plate, butter, and syrup right out of the refrigerator makes for cold pancakes. My wife said her hollandaise over the eggs benedict was the worst she has ever had, like it was a package mix. As we left there was a long line waiting to be seated. We asked each other, What for?"

My husband and I couldn't differ more on our breakfast: he likes omelettes; I hate eggs. Hawthorne cafe, it is. He loves the Farmers Omelette. I haven't tried it, but it's the best looking omelette I never wanted to eat. So this is the place where you have to LISTEN to the SPECIALS. I go for the "special" crepe that is stuffed with cream cheese and the super yummy fruit de jour whether it be apple, mango, pear--doesn't matter, it's all superb. And it is definitely special, but it's not temporary as you expect most specials to be. I count on it being there for me every Sunday morning so listen to the specials! The new owner is a super nice guy whose food is so much better than the previous owner's. Sometimes change is good--in this case, it's great!

I am part of a group of 4 50+ folks who go out almost every Saturday for breakfast (there a LOT of places in Portland for breakfast). We all liked the Hawthorn Street Cafe very much (July 23, 2005 visit). Lots of interesting specials, but I had the Hawthorn platter. I loved the Marionberry coffee cake.

I was a little trepiditious about the service when I read the reviews here; but our wait staff was really friendly and helpful. We were there from 9:00 to 10:30 and there wasn't much of a crowd there.

Prior reviewers were so negative, I have to wonder if we are talking about the same place! My husband and I visit there as often as possible. The marionberry coffee cake, with a homemade side of sauce is delicious, a must have specialty of the house! Eggs benedict and omelettes are our traditional fare. Mo, the owner, is courteous every visit, makes efforts to greet us by name, was chivalrous with my mom during a visit, and shows us old fashioned courtesy every time. The kids love going there, he accommodates service dogs with a fresh water bowl and a grin. We always visit weekdays, so haven't waited. The staff there have been consistently, refreshingly, amicable. Enjoy!

I completely disagree with that out of town person. I've been to the hawthorne cafe on a busy day and the line moved quickly. The owner was a very friendly man and greeted me and my friends nicely. The staff is quite busy but nobody there was rude at all. This is probably the best breakfast place to go to. Out of town people don't know what they're talking about. I've been here plenty of times.

In a city that prides itself on breakfasts Hawthorne Cafe should take itself off the list. My out of state family and I were greeted by a rude hostess and an even ruder owner. We waited over an hour and it wasn't even that busy. Once we were seated it took them over 15 minutes to deliver a side of toast. Food was good but not worth the stress. I was embarressed that this was the place I took my holiday vistors.

If you like this district, this place is a great spot to start the day with breakfast. Good, unique omlettes and friendly but busy staff.
Not sure I would go out of my way to eat here, but I might. Front looks scary, they need to plant some grassa as I won't eat on dirt ground on old picnic table. Especially to get an eyeful of Hawthorne's famed "I try to hard to be an individual that I am surrounded by people exactly like me in black/70's plastic baseball hats/bell bottoms/dirty hippie dreds/80's mod look" neighborhood. Not that big of a deal.
But a real good breakfast in this "hip" area of town.

My girlfriend is a Portland native. I am a New York native. She took me to the Hawthorne Street Cafe for breakfast on a Saturday. I enjoyed the casual atmosphere and the food. The menu has a good selection of choices for breakfast. The fruit was fresh and the atmosphere was very comfortable.

I live nearby the cafe and know several people who have worked there. Not only is the owner a very poor businessman, but I have been routinely dissappointed with the food that their kitchen sees fit to serve. On multiple occasions the employees' paychecks have either bounced or been late, and just this morning I was served an omelet that had peices of eggshell throughout. I suggest you take your business elsewhere. The wait staff is helpful and apologetic. The kitchen/management needs restructuring.

The adventure of finding the bathroom (keep walking toward the back and it's tucked behind a screen) and the casual service may mislead the first time visitor into thinking this is ordinary fare. Unusal variety of menu and excellent preperation for more than reasonable prices.
