DELICIOUS! Great place! We loved it. Now we know why there is no "walk-in" seating on the weekend evenings. We made a reservation to see what the hype was, and now we know. It's the Chocolate Souffle, oh my, that is FABULOUS!

Drinks last night after work were incredible, and the bartenders know their drinks. It's amazing. Crowded, naturally - but this place has survived in a town that most bars/restaurants don't last 5 years. I've known this place since the 80's and it's always been good. I just wish it was a little bigger.

Always happy and friendly, this place is almost (if not already) legendary in Portland.

I'm not going to generalize too much because this was the first meal I've had at VQ for three years (because the last one pretty much sucked).

Let me just say that the poached eggs on our Benedicts (three of us) and those of the tables near us were close to hard boiled. We might have ignored that if there had been enough Hollandaise to make the muffins moist. 'There wasn't.

When the waiter came by to ask "how everything was" we told him politely that all the poached eggs were over-cooked. His response was to smile like a doofus and say "I'll pass that along." Fifteen minutes later the table next to us got their Benedficts and echoed our complaint. They got the same goofy smile and the promise that he'd pass along the complaint.

This is Portland, Oregon. Paying $14-16 for brunch should get you something interesting. At Veritable Quandry it gets you the kind of food you'd expect at a casino brunch on the Vegas strip... at a higher price.

wonderful old bar! I love this place! The outdoor seating in the summer is superb! The only con would be parking as downtown on hot summer nights it seems next to impossible to find a spot! If you are out and near by definitely make this place a stop on your list!

I remember going to the VQ way back in the 80's when i worked downtown. It was great then and it's still a great place to go for good food and a good time.

There is no shortage of good and bad restaurants in Portland. This is among the good ones. The cost is reasonable and there are unusual dishes on the menu, including vegetarian. Nice place to relax with friends after work.

This is one of our favorite little cafes to eat at while in Portland. It is located right along the Willamette. In warmer months the outside seating is beautiful. Indoors is a warm and cozy brick building. The food is delicious, I love their breakfast choices, fresh and unique.

This restaurant has an excellent brunch menu on Saturday mornings/early afternoons. The food was amazing as well as the rich french press coffee. The service was wonderful. An overall great experience. I would recommend this to others.

Veritable Quandary is a great restaurant. The food is unique and good. The service is good. It's downtown so expect to park in a lot. It's great on a nice day if you can get a seat outside. Hot place Fridays after work too.

This is one of my favorite places to go for lunch, especially in the summer when the weather is nice. The food is always very good, and the menu is never the same from week to week. The service is always excellent and everyone is very nice. I highly recommend VQ.

the first time i went here i had a fabulous frittata made with oregon truffles and some kind of amazing cheese. the next time i went i tried to get the same frittata but when i ordered what i thought it was - i was sorely dissapointed. The old frittata had been replaced with a pretty bad replacement. This one was made with lobster mushrooms (which i had never tried and shall never again) as well as some other kind of mushroom that was tasteless. There was gobs of brie on top in an attempt to flavor it up but it still was a pretty bad meal which i did not even attempt to eat. I am still willilng to try one more time and see if the next meal will be fab or drab.

Had tickets to the show, I mentioned it to the reservationist, the hostess and the waiter. We had to almost run to get to the theater in time for curtain.
We made reservations for 5 at 5pm. And were kept waiting till 7:15 for the bill.
Over priced appitizers, The dessert we were told to order early, we did. And we still had to wait forever for it to arrive.
Not quite the elegant dining and theater experience we anticipated.

Great atmosphere - creative food. Friendly staff. The most lush and relaxing, garden-like patio in Portland. Burgers - great, Duck Confit Crepes - awesome! Service is always phenomenal - they don't hire amateurs here and why should they - they are a landmark restaurant. Had a really great cheese plate, server could have known a bit more about the cheeses, but overall a great presentation. Everyone from the bus boys to the hostess were super friendly and professional. Drink menu is creative; White Sangria is pretty good. Great wine list! Fair priced and a HUGE pour! Sometimes the late night menu ends a bit earlier than it should - but I'm sure they want to get rid of the drunks since they are a late night establishment and not nourish all the intoxicated people of Portland!

We allowed an hour and a half for dinner but still didn't have enough time to pre-order the special chocolate souffle. How disappointing! Our server was extremely slow (10 minutes with menus closed before we could place an order for appetizers - why wasn't this mentioned when drinks were brought?) Never gave us her name. We had to constantly search for her. Waited 20 minutes between appetizer and dinner (which blew our pre-order time for dessert - takes 30 minutes). She said there was no back up in the kitchen so we had to wonder if she just put the order in late? Now, the food was incredible. I would take fresh, tasty and inspired food over quick service any day. I wouldn't recommend eating here is you have a show to go to or some other time-based engagement.

Hot tea, great service and great food in a beautiful place! I'm not sure why other reviewers ordered dishes covered in cheese or eggplant covered in a salty sauce and then complained of the dishes coming as they were described on the menu. My family had a lovely experience, we enjoyed the low but not too dark lighting, and the service was excellent. I have food allergies (nothing in the grape or coconut world) and our waiter was polite and quick about checking with the kitchen to see if the pork dish was safe. They left the sauce off and it was delicious! They serve a variety of Numi teas, and the tea came hot, stayed hot, and they brought me more hot water. This is the first non-Japanese restaurant in Portland where I can say this. I love the layout of the place, too. It's clearly grown and expanded in an organic fashion which I find more comfortable than a planned mall look. Lastly, this is a fine dining experience. Bring your wallet with you. If you have questions about the menu, ask! That's what the quality staff are there for, and they *actually* have answers for you or know where to get them.

A very blah experience. The service was okay, certainly not the best. The food was what really let the side down. It just wasn't that good and everything (apart from dessert which we decided to skip) was covered in Parmesan cheese. When we asked for more bread we were given a plate of end crusts not a slice of bread in sight! Yes, the wine list was extensive but surprisingly there wasn't a single bottle of rose apart from a pink sparkling wine. Terrible ambiance and even worse lighting.

Ate at the bar:

Had tomato mozzarella eggplant stack as appetizer. It was a great concept, very well presented, but waaayyyy too much salt in both the eggplant and in the pesto.

Arctic Char for dinner - presentation was great, again, too much salt.

Is the chef a smoker? In my experience, chefs that smoke tend to add too much salt to their recipes.

Service was very good / above average. I ate at the bar and the staff was very attentive, recommended good wine pairings for dinner.

As a Portland native, I appreciate this restaurant for growing more beautiful and interesting every year. I sat in the garden this morning for the "King's Choice," a hearty brunch of bacon, eggs, potato cake, and the best french toast I've ever had, surrounded by roses, hollyhocks, anenomes, fucias and the most incredible hanging begonia baskets. This is a place that has evolved into what it is, and so escapes that empty and predictable feeling of carefully designed and marketed business plans. It is very special, and that is why I come back so often, whether for dinner, appetizers and drinks in the bar with friends, or a family brunch like this morning. The continual emphasis on very fresh, very flavorful seasonal produce and seafood is great--I always leave feeling full but with great whole foods--and the burger is sometimes inescapable (the best flavor!). Thank you to the VQ for so many great times!

This is my first message, but wanted to share my experience with others. Took my family ( a party of eight ), and they seated us in their wine cellar, a separate dining room. It was a great space for all ages, even two year olds. My children appreciate great food and we were not disappointed. The appetizers were unique and tasty as were the entrees. The service was exceptional and look forward to another family gathering there. I would rate the Veritable Quandry as the finest restaurant in Portland.

The entrees were mediocre and did not come close to justifying the price. The portions were also quite small and leave you hungry. The salads were pretty good, but for 11 bucks, it better be. Our server was unresponsive, slow, and screwed up our party's payment. Many better restaurants for the price, and if you want the location, just take a picnic to the park.

Love finding a perfect restaurant unlike any other? This little hideaway in a tiny brick building set in a beautiful flower garden, (just one block to the river bank for after dinner stroll), is the most romantic spot in Portland. The food is exceptional and the servings are large. Order the artisan cheese plate appetizer for a real pleasure. So few American restaurants do this well. Beautifully arranged collection of rare & fragrant cheeses, fruit & nuts. It is better than the fine cheese plates I have experienced in European restaurants.
The spinach and Caesar salads are both wonderful, the calamari light & crisp, the crab fettuccine mouth watering! Go back for weekend brunch and sit in the flower garden for a real treat. The service was just right, attentive and professional. I am a foodie, and this is 5 star! Enjoy!

This will be either a good or a bad experience. Sometimes they are "on it" (food and service) and other times you feel like you have thrown good money away. So face it. Portland is not known for being at the top of their game when it comes to customer service. Many places act like they are doing you a favor by taking your money. I have had wait staff here act like that but i have also had some real professionals. Same with the food. Their specials tend to be pretty good while the regular menu items need help. (This is another chef in Portland who does't know how to make beef tender). However, in the fall they serve a Eggplant/mozzerella/ tomato pesto salad that is out of this world....as good as what i've had in Europe. So i don't go until this item is back on the menu as i know i will have a 'sure thing'.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Portland. You have to try the chocolate souffle, although order it early because it takes a long time to bake. I have to agree that the waitstaff are usually pretty arrogant, and the atmosphere of the place has that "full-of-itself" feeling. Even so, the food is worth it. The salads are divine and make you want to eat more healthily all the time; the wine is always incredible; the butter and bread are even spectacular. There is also a gorgeous private wine cellar that you can rent out for parties of 8. This is a must-try Portland restaurant.

Believe the service complaints. I had lunch there without a reservation. We came in very early and the hostess agreed that we "could" eat there if we would leave by 12:45. We were very agreeable and planned to leave in plenty of time. We finished eating in about 25 minutes, were presented with the bill, signed it and began a short business meeting. A member of the staff actually came to the table and asked us to leave at 12:10. He said that they "needed the table because people were waiting to eat!"

Others around us overheard and it was very embarassing. The food is very good, but I would not risk taking a client or any other business person there!

I have taken business guests there many times and the service is OK and the food is great, but this does not seem to be a great place for a relaxing lunch.

it has been a long time since i have had a dining experience this pleasurable. i went here for new year's eve, and was a bit concerned that i was able to get a reservation at the last minute. i even stopped by in the middle of the day for a drink at the bar to check out the restaurant atmosphere before crazy new year's eve revellers messed it up. great bricky building with the bar in the front with an atrium-like area for dinner in the back. bar service was slow and the first server i had was somewhat sulky and unresponsive. dinner that night was completely different. our server was amazing and hustled all night. the hostess substituted for the sommelier and provided us with a solid wine choice between two chateau neuf de pape choices. i found that their low-end wines/champagnes/spirits by the glass were horrid. order wines from the middle price range to get the best deals here. food wise, the shellfish was the best part of the tomato bisque with dungeness crab and lobster. the soup was somewhat bland. the gnocchi was the best i have ever had: the potato pasta was a perfect cushion for the flavor of sharp cheese and truffles, then smothered with roasted wild mushrooms and a cream sauce. i licked this platter so clean that i couldn't do justice to the artic char with creamy wild rice that followed. flavors in this dish were tasty but unusual to my palate with the cream, citrus and dungeness crab combination surrounding the fish, which was a bit rare for my liking. i also tried the cassoulet of duck confit, braised lamb and homeade sausage. a wonderful hearty choice for a cold evening. for dessert, i tasted the fried banana fritters (ho-hum, although my partner loved them) but ordered the famous chocolate souffle. the souffle was an artistic treat, and not too sweet, which was a concern.

it has been a long time since i have had a dining experience this pleasurable. i went here for new year's eve, and was a bit concerned that i was able to get a reservation at the last minute. i even stopped by in the middle of the day for a drink at the bar to check out the restaurant atmosphere before crazy new year's eve revellers messed it up. great bricky building with the bar in the front with an atrium-like area for dinner in the back. bar service was slow and the first server i had was somewhat sulky and unresponsive. dinner that night was completely different. our server was amazing and hustled all night. the hostess substituted for the sommelier and provided us with a solid wine choice between two chateau neuf de pape choices. i found that their low-end wines/champagnes/spirits by the glass were horrid. order wines from the middle price range to get the best deals here. food wise, the shellfish was the best part of the tomato bisque with dungeness crab and lobster. the soup was somewhat bland. the gnocchi was the best i have ever had: the potato pasta was a perfect cushion for the flavor of sharp cheese and truffles, then smothered with roasted wild mushrooms and a cream sauce. i licked this platter so clean that i couldn't do justice to the artic char with creamy wild rice that followed. flavors in this dish were tasty but unusual to my palate with the cream, citrus and dungeness crab combination surrounding the fish, which was a bit rare for my liking. i also tried the cassoulet of duck confit, braised lamb and homeade sausage. a wonderful hearty choice for a cold evening. for dessert, i tasted the fried banana fritters (ho-hum, although my partner loved them) but ordered the famous chocolate souffle. the souffle was an artistic treat, and not too sweet, which was a concern.

Pros: creative menu, delicious food, great service

Cons: any low-end liquor or wine by the glass

I felt like it is a little over priced given the portion/quantity of food. But, given the ambience and quality of food... I would go back. It is a good place to meet friends. The outside area is fantastic. It is like a little getaway!

Had the pleasure of going to VQ on the morning after our wedding night. We had always known of the good reputation and go there for lunch often for business. But what a great experience this Sunday. Perfect brunch menu and portions, great drinks and service just right. Plus the weather was perfect for sitting out on the patio. Everything was perfect. Even if we were still in wedding bliss, it is rare mowadays that you have a dining experience with no flaws.

I haven't eaten at VQ for any other meals, but I had their brunch last Sunday and it was super. I ordered the housemade spicy Italian sausage. The sausage came with eggs, mozzarella, and potato cakes. All of the items were delctable. My friends ordered the Kings Choice breakfast which came with eggs, bacon, and french toast. They were happy because it took care of the dillemma of choosing to order a sweet or savory breakfast. Good job VQ. I'll have to pay a visit for dinner.

First, there's not a more beautiful garden-like setting than VQ! Their food has been good each time I have visited, my favorite has always been the cheeseburger. I dream about it! Love the wine list, love the people watching, and the location is great. From time to time service could be a bit better, but they are a busy place, so you should expect to wait a bit sometimes if you want to go to a popular restaurant. All in all, a consistent, pleasant, and well-priced experience.

The food was good and the atmosphere was nice once we got seated. However we barely saw our waitress and she was really harried.

Just got home from a special night! Wife's birthday, and last day at a job better forgotten. The 3 of us (10 year old son too) are vegetarian and saw a scanty selection on the menu. Crestfallen, we considered leaving for more familiar hauntings, but our wonderful server, Christine, convinced us to allow the vegetarian sous chef to stretch a bit. We were knocked out by 3 fabulous entrees, a couple of wonderful salads and the signature chocolate souffle. Atmosphere, was comendable. In typical Portland fashion, we met a couple at a nearby table and had a great conversation to boot. Understand that we have backgrounds in food service, management, and bartending in past lives, so we are picky for good service. The other reviews on this site worried me about the possible uppity waitstaff. DON'T BELIEVE THEM! Our service was exemplary and we will happily return. Christine, thanks for taking great care of us on a special night, and please thank the kitchen for a great memory. Cheers.

The entrance is indistinguishable so we entered the bar area only to have the bartender give us an arrogant look but turned away. A waitress was 5 ft in front of us but didn't acknowledge us even though she made eye contact. Instead, a patron told us to head outside and just choose a seat. We went outside, no one greeted us, but there were tables already set with menus on them. We happily chose a nice table only to be rudely shooed away by a hostess as if we were hoodlums. She made us take a seat in the outdoor "bar" area instead. We sat there for 10 minutes before that same bar waitress came out to bring the remainder of our menus and take our orders.

She was snobby when I asked about cocktails and worse yet, when she brought it to us, she just plunked it on the table and walked off. We waited an hour before our desserts finally arrived, and waited another 20 minutes after our dishes were cleared before she brought our checks.

All in all, it was a horrible waste of a good summer evening. The souffle isn't worth the $10. They drown it in an awful bitter chocolate sauce that tastes too strongly of alcohol, and I pulled slimy egg white membranes out of the souffle.

It may have been due to the Thursday night tastings and we are a lot younger than the middle-age crowd there. Nevertheless, that doesn't excuse their arrogance towards us. I find it completely unexcusable how they treated us like we were beneath them, and I will never go back.

Gorgeous outdoor seating and a great place to bring people from out of town. With all the other reviews, not much more needs to be said. I just wanted to express how much i love this place.

Outstanding brunch - the best garden/veggie burger I've ever had. Ever. It had things in it that actually looked and tasted like veggies, not just some soy patty. I saw somebody else eating a meatburger and I wanted to rip it out of her hands and stuff it in my mouth before she could call the police. The home-style Southern-style stuff that's on the brunch menu is great too and is comfort food without being too greasy or heavy like many 'Southern' style restaurants tend to be.

For dinner, we all swooned, even our picky friend. Sole with greens and very light truffle oil. Mm-mmm. Service was friendly, charming and efficient. People say it's an old-fashioned place but there's a reason it's survived.

Definite recommendation.

No hellos, no welcomes, nothing! After we found our own seats the waitress just handed us the menus and walked away. Do the people who work there have trainings on how to be a snob? All of the waitstaff were unatentive to all the customers. And there were only three tables being served. Unless you liked to be ignored, avoid this place at all costs!

This was the first nice restaurant I went to after moving to PDX (a year and half ago). Since then I have taken every person who has come to visit me to the VQ brunch. Super reasonable prices, great bloody marys and coffee, and a patio that (despite its highway proximity) feels like a secret place. I have never eaten dinner there, so I can't comment on anything else, but I highly recommend it as a way to start a weekend off in Portland.

Called VQ, locals & foodies in the know make a beeline to this intimate, picturesque dining spot. If you arrive early you might have the pleasure of meeting the charismatic owner at the bar, (we did!) The atmosphere reminds me of fine San Francisco or New Orleans, where owners actually care if you enjoy your meal. Very fresh, exciting menu pleases both meat eaters,(mouth watering osso bucco),& lighter tastes,(amazing crab cakes, salads, appetizers. Large portions, & fine wine list (Veuve Clicquot by the glass!) Go for breakfast Sat & Sun, enjoy exquisite dishes & children welcome. In summer the outdoor garden patio is the best spot to dine al fresco in PDX. With many chain restaurants/steak houses pushing out the local color, it is refreshing to find the VQ still delighting with some of the best food our city has to offer. Go.

I travel quite extensively(~200+ days per year) for a living around the world, but in particular, around the US. I definately feel that I know a gem when I find one. VQ is almost there, BUT----Falls just short of that status. Here are my impressions.......
Food--Very frsh, high quality, basic, but well balanced menu, measured & variable
Staff--Outstanding and knowledgeable regarding food, wine, local scene
Ambiance-- Very classy, yet not snobby or ridiculously upscale. Slightly elegant, yet comfortable. Except for......
Music--Amazing variety, selection, diversity, & intriguing, but sound system was horrific (one of the speakers was actually "blown" & "popping" on low to medium volume) How can such a classy establishment not fork out minimal investment on such a BASIC concept in ambiance and class? This was the difference between a good experience and a GREAT experience!!! My coleagues concurred, and, so, I write this on all of our behalf.

I was just there before seeing The Lion King last week. You can't beat the VQ for the combo of location, cocktails, efficient service and indoor/outdoor venue in fair weather. The food's always been solid in my opinion and I've been an occasional customer for 20 odd years. I had a burger (always good) and the Mrs had a shrimp gnocchi appetizer that was great. A glass of Veuve was $14.00 and we we each had one. I noticed that the entrees were well into the $20.00 range, some even higher and that surprised me...I always thought that this place strived for a casual vibe and their food and prices had always reflected that. Not anymore, be prepared to fork it over the next time you stop in. Looks like they're going for a destination dining spot with their menu and certainly their pricing.

When the weather is just right, dining on the outdoor patio is an exceptional experience. We started with the duck confit spring rolls with wasabi ginger sauce and the grilled pizza with figs, prosciutto, brie and hazlenuts. Both were a flavorful adventure. For our entrees we tried the New York Strip with Fire Roasted Corn Salsa, the Pork Tenderloin with warm Fingerling Potato salad, and the Oregon Salmon with Lobster Mushrooms. All of these were well received. For dessert we pre-ordered the banana tart. It was good, but not as amazing as the rest of the meal. The wine list is lengthy, but pricey. The service was excellent.

The food is excellent, and the service 1st class. If you go to one resaurant in Portland this should be it. Just the right amount of personal attention. Coat, tie to jeans are all welcome.

Portland has become so casual that the norm is to get your bill when the food arrives. Even in the better restaurants it is not unusual to see the bill arrive long before you finish the meal. At VG the server, Michelle, knew exactly when to deliver the bill: when we were finished with dinner, and looked like we were ready for the bill.

If you didn't see the Willamette River in your view, you could easily guess you were in Georgetown, D.C., or someplace nice in Europe.
