The Fred Meyer in Coos Bay is an old store but still nice to shop in. Hopefully a new store will come to the area soon. Here is an article from The World newspaper about it.

Fred Meyer eyes cost of building a new store
If a financial study comes back in the spring 2008 with positive results, customers may be shopping at a new Coos Bay Fred Meyer store sometime in the future.

The present building could be demolished and replaced with a larger new store, said Melinda Merrill, director of public affairs at Fred Meyer headquarters in Portland.

??We hope to have a due diligence report completed the first quarter of 2008,? Merrill said. ??That??s when we??ll know whether we??ll go forward or not.?

Merrill said the company, which owns 127 stores in Oregon, Idaho and Washington, searched around the county, but decided the best place to conduct their study for a new store would be on the 9.27-acre site of the current store, at 1020 First St., in Coos Bay.

If the report determines the company would benefit from a new store, a new 135,000-square-foot single-level structure would be built.

The existing 119,000-square-foot building was a grocery store when Fred Meyer purchased it in 1971, according to Merrill, who said the layout is not what the company normally desires.

??It??s not our best face,? Merrill said, adding, ??We??ve done a couple of remodels over the years.?

The configuration of the store is confusing, she said, and it also is subject to flooding each year.

??The people are great, but they deserve better,? Merrill said of the 150 or so employees. ??The customers deserve better. It takes such a beating in the winter floods.?

Although she said she didn??t have details about the new store, she said it could be similar to the Florence Fred Meyer, a 130,000-square-foot store that opened in 2000.

??We love the Coos Bay community,? Merrill said. ??It??s well worth it. We??ve just got to make the numbers work. That takes a little bit of time.?

I love going to Fred Meyers because it is so convenient. I can get my groceries, home supplies, books, and clothes without having to waste the gas and the time to go all over town to do it! Their selection of video games and dvds are very large andmy husband likes that! Also they have a very large selection of organic foods and I buy a lot of their foods there.
