This is, hands down, my favorite sushi place around Portland. I have hooked my husband and best friend (she used to always insist on Mio)!!
Sure, the ladies are on the serious side, but I would never describe them as rude. I go there for

Really good sushi and Japanese food. Their katsudon is awesome. The sushi can be a bit expensive, but hey, it's sushi: it should be expensive. Fresh and well-prepared.

I went to this resturaunt with some friends on a Wednesday night for Happy hour and when we got there we were treated as if we weren't welcome. The woman who seated us was completely rude and didn't even try to pretend to have a good attitude. It gets worse.....I found a worm inside my edamame shell....after already putting it in my mouth. This was the WORST experience ever and needless to say I couldn't eat another thing from this resturaunt but I still had to pay for the meal!!! Don't go---trust me

Pros: nothing

Cons: everything

Excellent food and they have a wide variety of sushi and non-sushi on the menu. We had some of both and all were commendable. The prices are quite reasonable. And unlike some sushi places, the portions are good-sized. The only down side is parking. Not terrible, but hard to find on the street (there is parking nearby).

I ate at Yuki Sushi on a Sunday. I know sushi on a Sunday? Bad idea.

My albacore nigiri tasted less than fresh. And that less than fresh cost me later. I totally got sick.

Maybe they're good on other nights, but man, stay away on Sunday. There's no weekend fish market, so all fish is from Friday... word to the wise.

I was here with a Japanese friend to try something new. The waitress didn't greet us and she didn't smile when she waited on us either. I understand that she doesn't like being a server, but don't take it out on the customers. I was impressed by their sushi roll menu, but when I tried it, it didn't amaze me at all. The sushi rice didn't have much vinegar, which it's suppose to. When I ordered Oyako donburi, it was terrible. They simply had rice, fried an egg and put teriyaki sauce over the chicken. It wasn't Oyako donburi at all. Where is the mirin in there! I will never come back here again. Any sushi restaurant that serves imitation crab, bad sushi rice, bad service and bad donburis is not worth it. Even my foreign Japanese friend thinks it's bad. Koji Osakaya is way better down the street. Check out the one in Gresham. That Koji's is one of the best! Saburo is not bad. One time order, but big rolls. Rice could be better. Still better than this place.

Like most reviews for Yuki, it was the poor service that will determine my final visit to Yuki. My boyfriend and I have gone there at least 6-8 times over the last few years, but last night was the last draw. I brought a friend who had never been there before, and was hoping to show her a good night, but it turned out to be another horrible service experience at Yuki.
When we arrived, we decided to sit inside so we might get better service, ya right!, but they sat us at the bar without even asking, and it was a wed, night at 5 pm so they weren't super busy or anything.
After we were seated in the deserted bar we then had to ask for everything, napkins, water, our bill, ect... they even downgraded their chopsticks since last time we had been there to probably the cheapest chopsticks available, they almost cut us with slivers and basically fell apart when you broke them in two. The crab was dry and definitely not fresh, it certainly came from a can! and when I pay $4.25 for two pieces of crab sushi, I expect it to be fresh crab!

Overall, I will not support this restaurant any more, they seemed to care less about out requests for water and the check, and some of the staff was even sitting at the bar, like 5 feet away, and we still had horrible service!!!!

Don't go here, There customer service will never improve if people still support this place. Force it to change by not giving them your business!!!

I am a sushi guru. In every city I have ever been to I have found a good, a bad, and a you have to try that place. In Ptown I would say Yuki is my Good one. I can always count on decent service, atmosphere, and leftovers. Yuki has a great many different rolls such as the KFC roll with fried chicken & cream cheese, the Cherry Bomb with peanut sauce & cherries with crab salad, but best of all is the Hurricane roll with it's tempura shrimp, avacado, Spicy Tuna & Seaweed on top. I want to order two of them when I go. There have been a couple of times when I have not enjoyed my visit to Yuki. Whatever you do don't go with group of more than 6. The service gets a bit ragged and the fish is nearly invisible. Also for the best experience sit at the bar, and order what looks good, not the specials.

i'm not sure how all of the reviews are so good. my gf and I went here on a weekday. we were seated promptly and service was average. food, on the other hand, was nasty. some of the worst sushi i've ever had - definitely the worst in portland that I've tried. they offered a lot of variety of rolls that aren't offered at other restaurants, but after you try one of them, you'll know why - the combinations don't go well together! it makes it worse cause the fish isn't super fresh. also, the rolls came with too much rice and too little fish. there's plenty of options for better sushi in portland: syun, sinju, maki, even mio sushi! go somewhere else.

To the 1/2 Japanese girl who hated Yuki,
if you're so pro Japanese owned restaurants why
don't you open one yourself? Plus if you say Japanese
take so much pride in their food, why are there so few
Japanese owned restaurants? You're review sounded
really racist...which I hope you're not.
I've always had really good experiences at Yuki.
It's a bit ecclectic, but it's a family owned neighborhood
restaurant...don't go if you're expecting linen table cloths
and dim lighting.

Vegetarians love sushi too, but sometimes the standard avocado roll, inari, veggie roll, and cucumber roll can get a bit boring. I really appreciate a sushi restaurant that puts thought into making something exciting for vegetarians. I love the Buddha roll. The Thai roll, Cherry Blossom roll and the Popeye roll are also very good. The presentation of the food is very fun too.

The restaurant is located in convenient NE Broadway, so my husband and I went on our first date night after our child was born. I am half Japanese and was craving good sushi and tempura. The waitress was rude and seated us without saying hello. She glared at me while I ordered my food. The sushi was okay, but I could tell that the tuna was not top grade. My tempura and agedashi tofu arrived in my bento box. Both were just terrible! Our bill came to over $60.00 and my husband and I felt cheated. It's just another example of why it's so important to find Japanese owned restaurants. The Korean's have taken over the Japanese restaurants in Portland and instead of sticking to making wonderful Korean food, they have decided to open up mediocre Japanese restaurant because there is more money to be made. I guess if you are not accustomed to eating true Japanese food - you may find Yuki's to be the best place in town! How unfortunate.

I enjoy eating at yuki, the sushis and the other foods aren't bad. I went there multiple times and I'm like already addicted to it lol. Well people, enjoy the foods because you'll never know what else is new. I went with friends after I came back from the mall and the rolls were the goodest lol. I also went with my family and you know they enjoyed eating it too. Yes there's also full of customers and it gets crowded because it's a pretty small building inside.

We ordered sushi, and it was very good. Many of the rolls were a little strange for us (a lot of rolls with fruit in them). I liked the atmosphere alot--reminded me of some places I'd been to in Japan. I didn't try the other dishes, but I would go here again.

I've been going to Yuki(ne broadway, was told 23rd location is not related) for the past 4yrs or so and I still love their food and very happy with the friendly staffs. From freshest fishes to lobster rolls and crunchy rolls are must try at Yuki! Open all day long unlike many other japanse places is another plus!

Though I think their sushi is pretty good(but a little spendy), I didn't think their service is very good. I've eaten there numerous times because it's so close to work but it's not my favorite. They never check on you, never offer more water, you can try to get their attention and they still won't look at you. My husband was like the waiter there. I can't count how many times he had to get up one night just for more water, chopsticks, wassabi, napkins. It was kind of annoying. The best I've had in the Portland area is Toshi in Hillsboro on 185th. They are so nice, you get free soup and salad with your sushi order. It's cheaper and tastes awesome!

The food is generally good but I've had two bad experiences at the NW 23rd Yuki Restaurant which, taken together, are preventing me from returning. In the first, I found a big, long hair rolled into my California Roll. Then, on a separate visit, I was served a completely different type of sushi than what I had ordered, so I asked to have it replaced. The waitress insisted that I try what was brought to me first and then, only if I didn't like it, would they make my correct order. It felt like my mother telling me I had to try what was on my plate. I walked out.

Also, food delivery is often much slower than promised, particularly for take-out.

I had lunch at Yuki the other day and walked out with a Yuck face. First off the cucumber salad didn't have the right dressing, making it tastless. The miso was very bland too. My bento combo with teriaki slamon and ginger beef was terrible. The tiny salad was the best thing about the bento. If a Japanese joint can't make rice right then they have serious problems, it wasn't sticky and a too hard. The beef was over cooked and totally tasteless, I didn't taste any ginger at all, just soy sauce. The tiny piece of salmon was over cooked as well, it was hard like plastic. Even the pork gyoza sucked!

I have eaten at many Japanese places over the years, here and in Japan, and this meal was about the worst I can remember. A sleazy strip-mall bento joint would be better!

Too bad the the food is yucky because the atmosphere is nice and the service good. You can bet that the Japanese wait staff doesn't eat there. You'd be much better off going a few blocks away to Sushi Land or Koji's.

I'll say it once more, "Yucky!".

I go to Japanese restaurants all the time and am always looking for good ones, but seem disappointed quite often. I like Yuki's a lot and think the atmosphere is very nice and old-fashioned. The service is good and the food is tasty, but what I cannot get over is how good the takeout is! I had never had Japanese takeout before because I always have Japanese food at home, but this was the first time and I was impressed! The tempura and chicken katsu takeout was so good I ate both..... Anyways, Yuki's is very good. Sure it's not MUGI, but it's a great alternative!

The sushi and the chicken teriyaki are really yummy, but avoid the take out. The two times we ordered to-go, we called 15 minutes ahead and still waited. Recently, we waited 20 minutes in the restaurants after we were told on the phone it would take 20 minutes for the food to be ready. When we arrived the hostess told us the chicken teriyaki was ready and that the sushi would be ready shortly...20 minutes later we received our food. The teriyaki sat, steaming in its container, while the hostess tried to get a sushi chef to fill our order. After heating the teriyaki on home on a skillet, the soba noodles ended up mushy.

The last time we dined in the restaurant the chicken teriyaki arrived at the table ten minutes before the sushi. The food is good, but when it takes too long to get it, the quality decreases immensely.

We expected to be wowed by Yuki, considering the high reviews on Citysearch, but was not. Perhaps all the name recognition it received made it try w/ less effort for customer satisfaction. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner, was seated in corner niche of the restaurant (first sign of the negligence to come) and our orders were not taken until we flagged down the bustling waitress. BTW, restaurant was not all filled. The party next to us, who had been waiting for their check, was glad that we managed to get the waitress to come our way. Food was good (korean beef bbq, assorted sushi rolls), but nothing extraordinary to compel us to come back.

I don't know what restaurant the other ratings came from but it certainly wasn't this one! Yuki's sushi is fabulous and so well priced for the amount you get! They are extremely inventive with their rolls! I have been about five times and the food has always been wonderful. Sometimes the service could be better but the rolls are fabulous so I will continue to love this place! I recommend the Vegas Roll, WONDERFUL! :)

This place is very casual and not for romantic occasions. Don't come here if you want something fancy or upscale. But if you feel like eating a good sushi and getting fast and very friendly service, pick this place and you would be satisfied. The fish was very fresh and delicious. Presentation was pretty, which I did appreciate. The atmosphere was very relaxed, I felt very comfortable.
We came here on Saturday night, so I cannot tell how busy this place is during the weekdays.

I picked Yuki for my first Portland suchi outing based on the strong 9.7 rating here. If this is the best Japanese food in Portland I'll have to stick with pizza. The place looks a little run down, torn upholstery, etc. The greeting was far from the traditional Japanese one, and the service was inattentive and not focused. The wife's dinner came about 5-10 minutes before my sushi. The oshinko maki had no snap or vinegar taste at all, and the hamachi maki and scallions was bland, had to check for scallions. The hamachi nigiri was fresh and probably the highlight. The "Red Heat" was neither red or hot. Stingy on the wasabi, greasy tempura.

Yuki is the best sushi restaurant in Portland i ever been to.
once i had super deluxe sashimi. it was sooooo fresh.
and the best part was the fun plate. They used ice to keep the fish fresh,
and also for decoration. there was parsley and some shells inside of the ice.
it was very cool and creative. Fish was big and i was happy with the price.
I recoommend super deluxe sashimi. you won't regret it !!

Last week,We had a super deluxe sashimi at Yuki.I was so impressed that fish looks so fresh. It was served on the ice that one of the sushi chef designed. We even see through
all kind of shells, parsley.I've never seen that kind of dish before.
No wonder sashimi looks so fresh..on the special ice.
It's not only looking,it was real fresh..
We feel like we are having a dinner at the seaside^^

Yuki is by far my favorite sushi place in portland, if not the west coast. I moved here from LA and in my visits down to southern california have been hard-pressed to find fish as fresh, large-portioned, and reasonably priced. The nigiri is always buttery and entirely devoid of any hint of being old or rubbery- I especially recomend the albacore, yellowtail, or salmon. The japanese food appetizers-tempura, japanese-garlic-chicken, miso, etc. are always flavorful, perfectly cooked/presented, and brought out in a timely manner. I have never had a problem with the service being slow or inattentive and I always look forward to going there (a couple times a week in fact) especially because it is in my neighborhood. Honestly, I have not found many restaurants besides Yuki in portland that I would bother telling anyone about. They are a true culinary delight in this city.

Pros: FRESH FRESH FISH! , Good Japanese Food, Quite Atmosphere

.

This was the worst place I have ever been to. Not the worst sushi place, but the worst restaurant period. Salad was the dominant theme. I had chirashi which usually has rice involved. Not here, I got lettuce. Everyones' plate was covered in lettuce in some attempt to distract away from how little fish there was. Even the desert had salad on the plate. I don't know what kind of fish they serve to everyone else, but my party got tiny, old fish. Absolute crap. Overpriced and slow as well. All in all it was a complete bad dining experience. Everyone who gives this place a good rating has no taste. This place was so bad I got a city search account specificly to relate how crappy it was.

I've been coming into Yuki for about 2 years. They have the best sushi in portland. Sometimes I have to wait a bit to get served but it's well worth it. I always get the philly roll, or the fried razor clams. The chicken skewers are quite tasty aswell. =)

Ate there as recently as last night and have always been impressed with the food and the service. Was amazed to see some negative reviews, since my small group has never experienced anything was enthusiastic salutations, quick seating and timely arrival of excellent food. Have eaten both combination dinners and sushi and have been pleased with all. Flavors and presentation were excellent and prices were rather high but not out of line compared to other similar restaurants.

We love sushi and have eaten and a lot of sushi houses in town. We prefer Yuki for their freshness and expertise in preparation. They are a tad bit more expensive than other places but, in this case, you are getting what you pay for. The service is a bit impersonal if you sit at a table. If you go alone or as a couple, sit at the bar and have a good time with the sushi chef's. The rest of their menu is good too so if you are really hungry, order a full meal and enjoy!

We've probably been to Yuki 10 times since they opened. I think they have one of the best menus of any Japanese restaurant in Pdx, and the food quality is outstanding. Some very unique sushi rolls as well (try the Go Blazers with smoked scallops!). The only bad experience we've had was on a Sunday night before a holiday when they clearly were expecting a slow Sunday crowd but were absolutely slammed.

Pros: extensive menu, sake/beer selection

Cons: if service is flaky, try back another day!

I have been to Yuki four times now, once to pick up a takeout order (the first time) and three times eating at the sushi bar. The first time the wait was horrible, it took them about 20 minutes to prepare a medium sized sushi order of 5 rolls. The sushi, however, was well worth the wait and assured that I would be back, and I have, and have never again had a wait like that one. If you don't want to wait, I suggest getting there just after they open for dinner and sit at the sushi bar. The service is attentive and friendly and the food is amazing.

I have been to Yuki three times and was semi pleased with the first two visits. The third, the customer service did not impress me. Attending Yuki with a friend, we stood in the doorway for minutes before being seated. The funny part, three employees saw us, and the place was almost empty. Our sushi took a very long time to order; the staff seemed to overlook us. Yuki is a great place for sushi, but the employee service could use a little work.

I have eaten at Yuki many times, and never have been disappointed. The fish is fresh, the rolls vary from typical to inventive and are always delicious, the tempura is perfect, and the service is always friendly. I confess I have never ordered a dinner, but then why bother when their sushi is so fantastic. The price is average compared to all sushi places in the area, and you never have to wait. It is a great restaurant for any occasion, including romantic or taking out of town guests, or a quick bite. I am now a regular.

Recommended by a co-worker, I was a little leary of this place, but very pleasantly surprised. This place had wonderful service. The people were very helpful and gave wonderful suggestions of what to order. The sushi took awhile to come to our table, but it was worth the wait. The presentation was fabulous, and the portions wore generous. I would recommend this place to a friend, but tell them it is more expensive then other places.

I absolutely LOVE sushi and was certainly delighted. The deluxe sashimi was fresh and tasty with large pieces of fish (no skimping!), including two large and very creamy and wonderful pieces of toro in addition to regular tuna. The rainbow roll is a must-try! My sister was with me and does not eat sushi, but she was also well-pleased. Try the NY steak teriyaki, very well-cooked and nicely tender. The gyoza were good although not as much as the reviewer suggested. Tempura was tasty but I don't find it the most catchy thing. Definitely go for the sushi!!

Yuki makes sushi with taste! Rather than having to use a huge amount of washabi to generate a little heat Yuki takes care of you....The "Dynamite Salmon" roll is just that...saved a piece till the very end so it would be the lingering taste.... Imagine the Seaside roll...deep fried oysters with lettuce and an amazing spicey sauce...You want to start at the top of your menu and work down. And I stayed under my budget constraints!

I sat at the sushi bar, and while the service may have been a bit more attentive (it was very busy, so understandable), the sushi was fantastic. They're sushi is as good as it gets for Portland.
