This place is just ok, not that great. The ambience is just ok, kind of lacking, kind of diner-like. The menu is fine but the quality is average to below average.

We've been going to Norm's for years and everyone is so friendly. Dishes can be made with different ingredients or more/less sauce, vegetables, etc., just have to ask. Sesame chicken is wonderful!!

Pros: Friendly service, all-around great dining experience

Not quality, but not a bad value. As good as 50% of the oriental restaurants that would charge $9 for one plate of food, without the drink.

Pros: Cheap, I was able to stand enough of the items to get full.

Cons: Not a place to impress a date.

There just aren't that many Chinese restaurants in this part of town, so you can't help but find yourself at Norm's from time to time. Unfortunately, the preparations are mostly too greasy and too salty on this standard menu. The atmosphere is horrible. The vegetables are usually fairly fresh, and the staff is friendly. They'll accomodate special requests, too. All in all, most of the time you just should drive an extra 5 minutes to a better place. But if you're desperate for Chinese food, Norm's is just fine (just get it to go).

We've been eating Norm's Garden's food for many years. They staff is friendly and welcoming. The food is about the best "standard" Portland Chinese fare we've found. There are places that do other things better, but for week to week take out it's hard to beat Norm's. My favorites are dry sauteed string beans, ma poa bean curd, twice cooked pork, and prawns in black bean sauce. My kids love the sweet and sour dishes. Their wonton soup and hot and sour soups are consistent and very good. The sizling rice soup is great, but best saved for dine in. Weekends are busy and expect long waits for take-out. Normal takeout turnaround is 20 minutes.

Norm's Garden is the kind of independently-run, friendly, hard-working Chinese food establishment that you always wish you could have close by in your neighborhood. Delicious huge portions of fresh food at reasonable prices, period.

Situated in a former Dairy Queen, one does not go here for the surroundings. The extensive menu includes typical and tasty Chinese food items. This is vastly better than most of the Chinese restaurants found in food courts. Favorites include the lemon chicken and the sesame beef and the sweet and sour items. The egg rolls and chicken fried rice are also good. Service is usually quick. Call ahead on Friday and Saturday evening for take out (it can get busy then).

I ate there for the first time a few nights ago and I really enjoyed it. For the most part thier dishes are the norm, except it looked like they actually made an effort to add fresh vegetables into thier dishes. It added a personal touch to the otherwise average everyday Chinese food. The veggies appeared to be hand chopped as well. The waitstaff was excellent, and it was not crowded on a friday night! Prices were good, and there seemed to be quite a few regulars in the place. Definately recommended.
