We've tried a lot of vets over the years, looking for one that could help our Pug with her skin condition. It looks like we've found the place at Northwest Neighborhood Vet Hospital. Dr. Gowing came up with a well-thought-out plan and so far, it's worked excellently. He also steered us away from some unnecessary treatments and was very straightforward about medicines. The rest of the staff were enthusiastic and fun and it's clear that they're dedicated to providing a great experience for your pet and you.

I have received good care at NW Neighborhood Vet however, I was originally referred to Dr Schuler because of his excellent reputation. On our second or third visit I was moved to another vet in the clinic which has worked out OK but did not like the switch after specifically asking for Dr Schuler. I do feel some of the charges are high but have not comparison shopped to know for sure. The staff is generally very helpful and friendly.

I'll start off this review by saying that when I first moved to the neighborhood, I was happy with how things were run at the vet. And I think if you book with the *right* vet you are still going to get good service, but because it is so hit or miss, I felt obligated to write a review.

When I first came here, I saw Becky Prull, who is awesome. She was helpful and polite and my dog really relaxed around her. While my dog has anxiety, Becky only suggested we try medication and respected my choice to not medicate my dog.

A few things started to go amiss though: they kept contacting me to get my dog's health paperwork, which I had brought with me during my initial exam visit. And I had already given them my old vet's number. A lot of voicemails about this, when they could have called the vet. Turns out they had my name spelled wrong in their accounts. Even when I went into the office, they just said they would leave a note for "someone else to fix it."

The final straw though was when I took my dog in for diarrhea I knew to be caused by her new dog food. I wanted a quick appt and assumed it didn't matter who I saw. Wrong. I was given an appt with Colleen Flaherty. She was a nightmare.

She entered the room without looking at my dog and immediately got in my face about putting my dog on anxiety medicine because I was a "bad pet owner" to not already have her on drugs. Without examining my dog, she declared the diarrhea was being caused by anxiety. Instead of giving her the antibiotics she needed, she proceeded to tell me about how much Prozac costs and why it was worth the money. I had to demand the antibiotics. When she came back with the drugs, she had the Prozac with her! She tried to charge me for it! I said I didn't want it 3 times and I still had to argue with the front desk girl that I wasn't taking it. The exam fee was higher than normal by about $40 and they still didn't have my name right in the system and it took 20 minutes to leave.

I got back to my apartment complex fuming and spoke to several other residents who go to that vet and they had similar stories of medicine being pushed on them, inflated exam fees, etc.

My dog trainer has since recommended a different vet and we are much happier. Becky Prull is probably still okay, so if you must go there, just ask for ANYONE else but Colleen.

Business Response:

We appreciate all reviews, both positive and negative. Our hospital has many amazing doctors with strengths in every aspect of veterinary medicine. We always hope that every client will find the right fit for them and their pet.

Scott Shuler, the owner of this clinic has been our veterinarian for many years. He is absolutely the best. He is knowledgeable, personable, compassionate, well-versed in both allopathic and complimentary medicine and about 20 years younger than I. With any luck, I'll never have to shop for another vet.

Very nice people, highly trained technicians, clean facility. They treat your pets with the care you would expect your doctor to treat you! Lots of information available within office about local threats to your pets, as well as how to prevent disease.
