My husband has taken me here on our anniversary a few times, we held a Christmas party in their private room, and I celebrated my first book being published here.

The atmosphere is elegant and calm. I love all of the history and the piano

We purchased through TravelZoo a voucher for $99 to dine at the London Grill. All that we can say is "Wow!" The service was by far the best experience we have ever encountered in all the years of dining experience we have ever had. This

I have been to the London Grill many times over the years. Today was my last. We were seated in the Benson Crystal Ballroom. Same food from the same Kitchen. The layout of the Buffet was very cramped so it was difficult to jockey around

From reading other reviews, we expected overpriced just okay kind of food and a stuffy waiter...but we also knew to ask for the wine cellar room. This room holds a round table for 8 and you can't help but feel cozy among candles and lots of wine bottles. The ambience is amazing. The service was just as amazing. We let them know we were celebrating our engagement and they were wonderful in being personable, friendly, informative and not too 'in your face'. We were able to both order their $35 special which featured salad, a main course of steak and a dessert as well. Not to mention their house made bread, to die for! We ordered the tableside Bananas Foster and very much enjoyed having the waiter tell us how to make it at home as well. Was just beyond amazing and a completely unexpected experience. :)

Have wanted to dine at the Benson for years, but it never worked out. This last friday went with friends and I can only say that I had the single best dinner out I've had in YEARS!!!....Absolutely wonderful......Relaxing atmosphere, Richard, the server was terrific, knowledgeable and made the experience fun!..I had the Herb Chicken and it was out of this world....I eat out a lot, go to the best places...and this dinner was right up there on the top....Yes, it's not cheap, but you couldn't find a better value for the combined atmosphere, old world charm and terrific food...If you want a special night out, quiet, relaxing.....This is the place....I'll be back...and recommend to my friends who care about quality....

Pros: Wonderful ambiance, class you can't buy, terrific wait-staff

Cons: Prices are high, but find ONE of this caliber that isn't!

I joined friends for a celebration - the food was incredible and the service seemed okay until our bill came. Then we realized that NONE of us got the wines that we had ordered. When we asked our server he told us that their wine menu was outdated (both in product and in price) and that he substituted the wines that we ordered with different wines and never told us. The substituted wines also cost more. When we questioned that he told us that we got better wines that we had actually ordered so we really should just be happy about it. We were so stunned that he was acting like he did us a favor. Bottom line ?? have a current wine list and if you are out of a wine ?? you OFFER a substitution you don??t just do it and not tell the customer (and then be rude about it).

This was the first time I ever ate there - I had heard about the place for decades, but never dined there. There were things on the menu I never ate before, so it was an interesting adventure. The food was good, but the service was better. John Louie was our server, and he explained everything really well and I changed the 'house wine', as my first choice wasn't exactly what I wanted (I sampled, which was unusual for an inexpensive wine). No problem, no charge. He was always close, but not annoyingly attentive. All in all, it was an elegant dining experience. I can't understand the few really negative comments at all. I'm glad I didn't read them before going. The 'con' was price. That's because I have a lower income, so anything much above $15 is on the 'only for special events' category. But if you're not limited to a tight budget, it's probably not too heavy. I think it's a lot less than Ruth Chris type places. My experience was really nice.

Went for mother's day. What a mistake. Ridiculously overpriced food. Out of a large group, I was the only one that liked the appetizer. Most of the group took a couple of bites of their dishes and left the rest. One had a cream soup and commented it had the consistency of warm cream cheese.
The Entrees were a slight improvement over the appetizers but not much.
Bottom line, the group entered hungry and left the same only with a lot less money. I would compare the restaurant to Stanford's but with a quieter atmosphere, worse food and triple the price.
For the price it gets 1 star. If I spend $60 for myself on dinner, it better be exceptional and this place wasn't even close to mediocre.

I made my reservation on 11-13-08 over the phone for my 26th anniversary at the ringside on burnside. . I arrived at the Burnside location, valet my car, stood in the entrance for about 5 minutes. A pretty lady asked my name then checked the computer for my reservation. Another gentleman approached me and stated The person that took the reservation over the phone did not make them for the burnside location. I stated I did not know there was another location as I always ate here. I asked if they could correct the mistake. I was told no, it would be an hour wait to seat my wife and I. But they could save the reservation for the other location. I declined. I then left quite mad as they ruined my anniversary at this point , it was 7:17 in the evening and I had to find another place to eat . I was driving east down burnside trying to decide where to go. I used my wife?s gps to find my next destination. I called the London grill at the Benson hotel to see if they had a table. The answer was yes . I was pleasantly surprise the food was much better, the service was impeccable. If anyone has the same problem you know where to go

My friend held her wedding and subsequent brunch at the Benson. Brunch was horrific at best. 1 server for 24 people with a horrible back waiter. Server yells asking how many mimosas/bloody marys throughout the entire brunch. I told the Benson event coordinator that some water upon arriveal would be nice. Nothing happened. I told the front desk manager that our concerns about the horrible service were not being addressed. She sent the food and beverage manager. After 15 minutes and more yelling by our server the F&B manager arrived. He said "I just got here" after I explained all my concerns. Sorry for your lack of internal communication but that's not my problem. There should have been another server or at least a professional one. It was like Denny's servers in fancy clothes. I manage restaurants and was shocked at the utter lack of concern that management demonstrated. Food was okay. My over medium eggs were over easy. Those who got eggs benedict were surprised to find hard poached eggs smoothered in thin layer of hollandaise sauce. Food was warm not hot. There were no condiments on the table so after 3/4 of our meal was finished some hot sauce appeared. Hello Benson - maybe with the economy they way it is you should perhaps ask your staff to be a tiny bit professional. Your F&B manager did absolutely nothing to remedy the situation! Perhaps your staff shouldn't yell in a private room - maybe walk around the table and ask people what they would like (like a normal restaurant), if your servers suck-coach them! It's a reflcection of your poor management! Don't hold any special occasion there unless you want an auctioneer on your most special day!

No more tableside cooking:
Used to be five stars now four stars. New chef and no tableside cooking is a big change for us. The food is still very good and John Louie is the best waiter in Portland. I hope they bring back the tableside service. That is a big problem for us.

This was my first time at the London Grill. The food and the service was awesome. We ordered the Chateaubriand (beef tenderloin, I had to ask the wait staff) for two tableside. It was so yummy, melt in your mouth. The wait staff (John) was very accommodating. We asked for our salad to be split, it was brought out on two seperate plates. For dessert we had bananas foster table side. I would definately go back again.

My husband's grandmother was turning 80 and decided that the London Grill was where she wanted to have dinner. There were 17 people in our party which i understand can be hard to manage but you would think that a restaurant of this calibur would be use to larger parties. When we arrived our table wasn't ready they stated that another party went longer than expected. My advice give yourself extra time inbetween two large groups to make sure everything is ready. After a few minutes they asked for our drink order's. We had decided as a group to just order wine (8 bottles), just because a table is ordering wine doesn't mean that they don't still want there water glasses filled up when they are emptied. I think they came around twice. Once our food started to arrive I noticed that everyone at the table had gotten their dinner excpet myself. The waitress told me that it would be just a few more minutes, which was fine. Then she told me it would be a little longer than they thought. How much longer you ask. Everyone else in our group had finished dinner and was having there plates removed when they brought me my dinner which was overcooked on top of being so late. Being disappointed was an understatement. My dinner was comped without having to say anything. On top of that my husband found a hair in his mashed potatoes, his cousins salmon was under cooked and the waitress was definetly NOT worth the 18% gratuatiy.

Some friends and I went for Sunday Brunch. The Food was great and that's the only positive thing I have to say about the London Grill. We had a huge problem with fruit flies. We alerted our wait staff and they did not seem to care. After swatting at the flies, we disposed of at least 4 flies on our own. Then they came back and tried to make an excuse that was probably the flowers that were causing them to anoy us. They said they told the manager about it, yet the manager never did come out to talk to us, nor were we taken care of in any way (e.g. getting moved to another table, and many tables were still open, not a single meal was comp'd, nor were the flowers that the waitress suggested could be the problem taken away) At least they took a glass of orange juice with a fly floating away after we asked for it to be removed.

My husband and I went to London Grill For breakfast and seriously regretted not making reservations for dinner dining. From the fireplace, piano, high back chairs, high ceilings to the wood paneling along the walls, Titanic-like staircase leading down to the restaurant; this is definitely worth a trip to visit.
I had the crepe and my husband had the salmon hash. Both were excellent. Price was approx. $50, including tip.
After talking with waitstaff, we were made aware that for dinner dining, it's definitely a jacket and tie restaurant.
London Grill has ambiance, traditional elegance, and pleasant service. Definitely worth visiting again!!!

My fiance took me here for our anniversary (before we got engaged) and it was the PERFECT choice! The atmosphere, music, food, service - all are getting A+ from me! (and I am not easy to please)
Our waiter was very attending and had the exact amount of humor that was funny but not annoying.
The only thing I didn't like about this restaurant was that they do not enforce dress code.

People, please, if you are coming to place like this, do not wear jeans!!! This is not some fast food joint, have some manners and respect!!!

I looked up AAA's website to find a good restaurant and couldn't believe there was only one 4-Diamond in all of Portland. After eating at London Grill, I see the rating is justified. We were warmly greeted by the hostess and the waitstaff was top notch. We went with the tableside Caesar Salad for a starter, which was amazing. And I've never seen such an extensive wine list. Our main courses arrived just right (my wife always has a lot of special requests), and we went back to tableside for Cherries Jubilee dessert. All in all, the experience was exquisite, and we'll be back!

I have been to the London Grill twice and will never go back. The first time I went was for breakfast, and we sat at a table for 25 minutes before anyone helped us. The second time was this afternoon for lunch. We arrived at 12:45, our waiter finally came to our table and took our order at 1:20,. At 1:50 as people that arrived after us were leaving, we asked our waiter about our food and explained we had to get back to work. It took them another 20 minutes to finally get it to us. My crab cakes were soggy and cold. They did however comp our entire lunch.

I recently visited the London Grill and was amazed that this restaurant existed in Portland. The wine list is extravagent. Much care was taken by not only listing the wines, but also mapping out and describing the regions and locations where they came from....a very nice touch. The food was decadent. We started with a grilled scampi with light salsa verde. One of our highlights was the lobster bisque soup, which included generous portions of lobster. For our entrees, I had the aged filet, while my girlfriend had the lamb (which we found out has been on the menu for 20+ years, and there is a reason for that!). The service is what you would expect in a fine dining restaurant: professional, courteous, and well educated on the menu and wines. The Portland Grill is a must on any list of Portland restaurants.

We recently dined at the London Grill. Not a good experience. The service was sub par, very sub par. I ordered a ribeye steak and when I was done there was a big pile of fat on the plate. The server brought a wine list to us, and within a minuet asked ... do you know what you want? Very cold, like he didn't want to be there. The bus boy paid more attention to us. Will never go back. For the price you would think they would pay some attention to their guest. Very sad that this restaurant is always rated one of Portland's best.

Pros: QUALITY OF FOOD, SERVICE, WINE LST

The food was delicious - even the lamb which I usually hate. My girlfriend and I will return as soon as I can get time off from the second job I had to take to finance our first visit.

I am kidding, to a degree. It is no more pricey than any other restaurant of its class.

The crusted parmesan sole and seafood risotto were good choices. Bread that comes before entrees was cold and hard. Soups were a bit too creamy, but the heralded Caesar was great. Service, especially by Bobby at lunch, was excellent.

Without a doubt the best restrauant in Portland. The food is outstanding and the service is unmatched. If you are looking for a quit and romantic dinner, look no further. The London Grill offers what VERY FEW other restrauants in Portland offer. STYLE and CLASS!! If you want HIP and COOL this is not your place, but if you are looking for a elegant and sophisticated dinning experience try the London Grill.

This is the best Sunday Brunch around. The variety, quality, & appearance of the food is worth the price. Service is generally good. The pianist adds an elegant touch to the surroundings. Great place for birthday, anniversary, etc..... celebration.

My husband and I have recently moved to Portland, and English Grill is our favorite so far. We go there for special occasions -- and make excuses to find them!
The scallop and mushroom appetizer is incredible beyond words, and the rack of lamb entree is my absolute favorite. I usually order the Opera salad and skip dessert, though the dessert menu is tantalizing, and the "flambe" selections are fun in their presentation.

This is my favorite restaurant in Portland. I have eaten at this restaurant several times and I have always loved the experience. The food is consistently excellent. The appetizers are wonderful (recommend the baby lobster tails - little pieces of heaven!), the caesar is the best I've had in Portland (they make it tableside), and the entrees are wonderful as well (the filet melts in your mouth!). Great place to dine with friends on a special night out or great place to have a romantic dinner. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
