Who waits an hour to use an elliptical?

by Sha B. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 9,445

This is a beautiful gym and it's for women only. The showers have gold fixtures and a spot to sit down in, there's an aromatherapy room and a sauna. There's very limited weight lifting equipment, limited treadmills, ellipticals and bikes and that's about it. There's also an exersize room but it's always full, just like the rest of the club. It's impossible to get on a piece of exersize equipment and they are closed on Sundays because the owners go to church, they have that notice posted in the workout room basically telling people to stop asking them to be open on Sundays. Once I saw that notice, I put in my notice I'm done with this gym. The parking is VERY LIMITED just like the workout equipment.

Why must the only women's club be so small and confined and why can't they hire people to work on Sundays? This isn't the place to go, it's lovely inside but what good is it if nobody can use any equipment? Might as well stay home and do sit ups.

PROS: Showers are beautiful
CONS: gym equipment always full, no room for anything

All Style, No Substance...

by Joel M. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 7,883

The facilities are quite nice, particularly the restrooms/changing area and the aroma/light therapy room (although it can only accommodate 3 people!). However, the gym's benefits end here. The classes are limited, the yoga program has been all but eliminated, parking is a nightmare, and the gym is usually stuffy and overcrowded. The hours are ridiculous ... CLOSED on Sundays (!!) and closed very early on Saturdays. Much of the equipment looks antique. However, the real problem with Resort to Fitness seems to be that its management takes your money and then forgets about you ... they seem much more concerned with attracting new customers than they are with making their current ones happy. I regret signing a contract, and recommend that women explore other fitness options.

PROS: Light therapy, Changing Room
CONS: Hours, Limited Class Options, Price

Beautiful and comfortable gym

by Jana D. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 8,180

The best gym I've ever belonged to. The place is well-maintained and the environment is almost resort-like. There is an aromatherapy and light therapy room, as well as fresh flowers and a soothing design. The machines, weight rooms, and personal trainers are great, and the group fitness classes are excellent. It's for women-only, and is a supportive, unique environment.

by takeahike

I started a few weeks ago doing their outdoor bootcamp training......it's awesome! Each day I'm with a different trainer and you never know what they have planned. They pretty much cover all body parts and if there is one specifc you'd like to work, they'll work it in. It goes though September..... I'm looking forward to see how my body transforms!!

Pros: Outgoing Personalities

A welcoming gym

by redmartinilady

I joined this gym a little less than a year ago and am totally thrilled with it. I was ready to begin to make those life changes that we all say we want to make but somehow most of us never get around to doing it. The staff has really helped encourage me on this journey and I am very grateful for that. Heck! even some of the other ladies have been encouraging to me when I took my first step class and when they noticed that my workout clothes were fitting a little looser. This is a great place to workout!

Pros: Staff, clients, clean

Cons: parking

I totally disagree!!

by angelbmeeh

I disagree with the last review, I joined this club less than a year ago and have nothing but good things to say. When was the last time 24 hour fitness actually cared to ask you about your expierence at the gym AND did something about it? I belonged to 24 Fitness for years and the truth is they are a corporate scam and only care about the money you give them. The people who staff NW Womens fitness/personal training actually learn your name and will ask you if you would like assistance. They aren't selling you anything they do actually care. AND if you have a problem with something there talk directly to Sherri and she will be happy to listen to you and take care of it right away. They are a small club and pride themselves on service. As far as machines go... they are mechanical and yeah they sometimes break down. Did you know that when they take a machine out of the club to buy thier members new ones they acutally DONATE it to a rehabilitation clinic or for the police or firemen to work out on. I personally will be happy to pay an addition 25 bucks A YEAR to have the latest and greatest equipment. DO NOT let that review spoil you from trying this great club who cares about thier community, giving back and helping you to personally reach your goals.

Pros: Womens Only, Personal Service

Cons: Parking at Class time

Great Staff - too mellow an environment

by luv2review

The front desk staff is top of the line. I have never felt so welcome walking into any other club before. Trainers are friendly and well educated. However, the musci is so boring. Who can work out to James Blunt? The equipment is old, when the new owners took over two years ago we were promised new equipment, but the only place that got it was the "co-ed studio". This place has more potential than the energy they seem to give it to improve.
They like to keep you involved in a comunity atmosphere so that is nice, and like I mentioned the staff are fantastic! It feels like they want to cater to an older woman clientell rather than women of all ages. Being a member for over 3 years now, I am begining to ponder if the gym floor environment promotes the motivation I am needing. I love that the staff has noticed when I lost 15 pounds. There attentiveness makes coming every day worth it. Its a catch 22 at this point

Pros: Amazing front desk staff and trainers

Cons: boring environment targeted to an older generation

Too small

by middleteri

The parking is terrible. The machines too close together. The upstairs has spinning bikes, for what 2 classes a week! The place is just too small.

Pros: clean

Cons: Parking, size

Limited Parking

by cthoyt

Limited Parking available on site. If you want to take your life into your hands, then tr y to cross Broadway in the evenings to get to the club. No notification of renewal changes, they just charge you more without telling you. Classes are hard to get into. Room is too small. The Eucalyptus and light-treatment sounds much better than it is. It is just a single room that has both and only 3 people can be in there at 1 time. Member for 5 years only because it is close to my house.

Pros: Newer equipment

Cons: Limited Parking, Everything costs extra

Great facility, friendly staff and motivating personal training

by umbria17

If you are a woman looking for a great place to workout that caters to your specific needs this is perfect gym for you. My personal training program was developed specifically to meet my goals and is modified to keep my interest. I get individualized attention and support from my trainer and care is taken to make adjustments each session so that I can achieve maximum value from my workout. The friendly, supportive staff welcome you as you walk in and are always eager to provide service. The atmosphere is clean and the decor cheerful and you are even provided with a good selection of reading material for the cardio machines. I've been a member for six months and my only regret is that I did not join sooner. I would rate the gym a 10 with only one exception. I would like access early Sunday morning. Given all the other great benefits of the gym I can overlook this.

Pros: Personal Training, cleanliness, cheerful

Cons: none

This place does not *smell* like a gym!

by like2bfit

You know the smell! It's been a big turnoff for me when checking out other gyms in the past, and I've never experienced it here! I am pleased to see a gym and especially a locker room being so clean. I've been a member for over 5 years now, and working out is certainly my focus of being a member, but being able to do so in a nice, clean, friendly atmosphere is awesome!! I'm very pleased with the changes NWPT brought with them when taking over the gym! Just the feeling you get when walking in the door now is wonderful! Being greeted by name by one of the staff at the front desk, to the the hellos from other staff members walking through the club, to the chitchatting with other members (since many group activities are now taking place where you get to know other members), is just plain wonderful. I am very pleased with the classes NWPT started offering and the professionalism of the instructors! I've tried many different classes and gotten a super workout out of each and every one of them! I've never been pushed to purchase training sessions or any other service and yes, the membership is higher than most places, but I gladly pay it for the type of facility I get, with its equipment, fitness classes and the other "extra" classes that are offered regularly. I'm very much getting the feeling NWPT is in business because they care about people getting fit and healthy, and as much as I know that's not completely the case, it certainly seems that by treating the members well, they're also able to run a financially successful business. I'd highly recommend this place, which has become a home away from home for me, to anyone who would like a more intimate, friendly and behind-kicking place to work out.

Pros: Cleanliness, Staff, Classes

Cons: Parking (although walking a block or two doesn't hurt anyone)

A Fabulous Place to Workout

by amgocd

I really love the personal trainers and the quality of the group fitness program. I love having the sauna and spa services on site. It's so convenient. Since NW Personal Training took over from Resort to Fitness, I have noticed much more variety in the group classes. NWPT also organizes trips and local outings. I am also impressed to see their support(sponsorship) for local athletic events like the Lacamas Lake Memorial Day run.

Pros: Personal trainers, group classes, sauna

Cons: Parking is inadequate, weekend hours could be longer

Best fitness facility in Portland!

by vball93

I have to give a shout out to Northwest Personal Training. I have been a member (or I should say dissatisfied member) of other gyms in town. I have finally found a gym that cares about their members instead of their dues. I so appreciate the excellent customer service, inviting atmosphere and top-notch personal training staff (I have finally lost 25 lbs!) If you want results, give them a try.

Pros: toiletries in the locker room, super clean everywhere

Cons: none

More than just a gym...

by aiasiaousoihgei

Whether you want to lose weight, build strength, take a few classes to relieve stress or all of the above, this gym is the place to do it. The gym itself is fantastic. Clean, well decorated and full of the best equiptment. The staff is all excellent, including the very knowledgable trainers (I swear by everything Kathy B. teaches me), who are always willing to answer a few questions, even if you can't afford to spring for a session. The administrative staff is also excellent. They are not only friendly, but also extremely encouraging (and what's really impressive is that every single one of the staff seems to know every single member by name!). It may be a little more expensive than 24-Fitness, but it's well worth the extra money. Seriously. Not only is it a place where you are encouraged to work out as often as possible and to participate in their variety of programs, but it is also a place where you'll want to go. The environment is inviting and the rest of the clientelle are very encouraging of one another, making working out a positive experience. They also offer a variety of out-of-gym programs, including river rafting and various fitness challenges, as well as programs for parents and their kids. Pretty cool.

Pros: Location, variety, trainers

Cons: The few members that don't wear deoderant (but that's not really the gym's fault).

Outstanding total program for health and fitness

by alaband

Since the McMillian's took over what was formerly Resort to Fitness, it had leaped upward in both professionalism and customer satisfaction. The McMillian, Sherri and Alex, are two of the most accomplished and knowledegeable fitness experts in this hemisphere (literally, they are asked to do trainings all over the U.S., Canada, and south of the border. Because this is a passion for them, and not just a business, they are happy to make sure providing members with knowledge, programs, and expertise needed to develop a well-rounded life-time fitness plan is the number one priority of their business. In addition to offering some of the best in terms of knowlege and committment, trainers, they offer free informational seminars on fitness training, nuitrition, menu planning, and general wellness.
They also start with the philosophy that if they treat their employees well, the employees will pass on that satisfaction in their service. Actually, I think the McMillians do an outstanding job of hiring good people and then nurturing and supporting their staff because treating people well is part of their personal values- not just because it is good for business, but the results is friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff that are a pleasure to work with and know how to make you feel welcome. I highly recommend this club

New owners, atmosphere & equipment!

by hipchik

As I sit here and read some of these reviews, i wonder how often some of you come to the club? They have been open on sundays for months now. I'm a 5 year member and am personal friends with the previous owners. They did not run the club anywhere near the professional level that the new ones do. They call us every other month to make sure I am using the club, the personal trainer i met with gave me great info on how to change my eating and routine to maximize my results. Most of the front counter girls are new, but they are not family members that don't want to be there, these girls talk more to me in the last 6 months than anyone did in the last 4.5 years. I love all the changes, it is much more upscale, caring and inviting than before.

Pros: new equipment, better trainers, best group classes

Cons: none

User review by sarajohn

by sarajohn

I have been a member here for 4 years and while I will stay a member because it is so close to my home I miss the gym it used to be. It has changed owners and has since been redecorated. It has lost it's feminine feel. It does have new great equipment. The new employees don't have the same caring attitude for each member. It is overpriced and they push personal training way too much.

Pros: new equipment

Cons: price

Still too Dark - Not a motivating place to train

by sfit

For the membership price and the sales pitch I recieved over the phone I expected the facilities to be state of the art. What I found was a dark gym with no windows, (decorating was nice, but still does not hide the fact that you're working out in a basement!). Also, my "free" personal training session ended up being more of a sales pitch than a "free consultation".
The group classes offered are about the only thing good here, but again, the classes I tried were either too full to move, or else there were only 1-3 of us, which makes for a bit of an intimidation if you do not like to be at the front of the class.

Cons: No Parking, Expensive
