Say what you will, it's still the best thin, greasy, fold-in-half slice you're going to find in this town. They really ought to be recycling or composting all those plates by now though.

First, the service is ridiculously bad. Every time I went to this place (which wasn't very many because of these reasons), I would walk in and stand by the counter waiting for 5 minutes for someone to acknowledge I was even there - with NOBODY else in line, only 2-4 people eating in the lobby, and 2 so-called employees chatting it up behind the counter 3 feet away. They force you to be the a-hole and interrupt their conversation to ask them to do their job.

The real reason for my review is why I will never step foot in this place again. I ordered a pizza by phone and was told to pick it up in about 20 min. So I get there about 25-min later and of course, waited at the counter for several minutes for somebody to ask me if I needed help. When I told them I was there for a pickup order, they hadn't even made it yet and I had to tell them a second time what I wanted because they lost the ticket. So again I waited in the lobby while they made my pizza and several others. As my pizza finished baking, I saw the employee take it from the oven and put it in a box, AND GIVE IT TO ANOTHER CUSTOMER WHO CAME IN AFTER ME. I was baffled and didn't say anything at first because a) maybe we ordered the same pizza, b) maybe I mistook someone's pizza for mine as they went into the oven - either way, I gave them the benefit of the doubt (they're getting paid to do their job, right?). I waited about another 10 minutes and then watched as they placed another pizza in a box, entirely different from anything I ordered, and then handed it to me. I opened the box and told them that this is not what I ordered. They reluctantly checked my new ticket and found that it was NOT my pizza. They then talked amongst themselves for a minute when one of them ran to the phone and made a call. It turns out, they had indeed given my pizza to the other customer (who had arrived early anyways) and I had received hers.

Now, it's already an extremely frustrating situation and a complete waste of time, but here is where it just gets gross. They had called the other customer to let her know she had the wrong pizza (which she had already discovered and was on her way back) and when she arrived, they gave her the pizza they had tried to give to me, and then GAVE ME THE PIZZA SHE HAD ALREADY TAKEN HOME!! They basically said "Here ya go" with no apologies or signs of realizations as to what they just did and what kind of health codes they violated. I took the pizza and threw it in the nearest trash outside and went home. I was absolutely speechless. This place is disgusting in every way. The employees are trashy and I get better service at the DMV. I will be posting this same review on every ratings site I can find and will be contacting the Health Department regarding the issue.

DO NOT EAT HERE!

Well,

This is the MOST delicious pizza in Portland, hands down. The service however is seriously lacking.

I have had SEVERAL negative experiences with the owner. One where I went inside to pick up my pizza after ordering it and sitting

I wouldn't vote for Escape from NY if they were the last option! Their pizza sucks! Not only is it bad but it is NOT from NY and I know because I lived there for years. When I moved back to Portland I was excited to go here and remember how great NY pizza is but I was SO disappointed. I almost asked for my money back it was so bad. I don't remember the pizza being so bad before I moved to NY but hey, maybe I never knew what good was???? ;)

After having been a loyal customer for years, I decided to take my boyfriend in for a slice. It was hot, we were hungry, and I was stoked to see that the lighting inside was gorgeous through the windows (I'm an amateur photographer).

He ordered a slice from a really fat guy with a bald head behind the counter and paid for our food and drinks with minimal hassle. The guy wasn't friendly or helpful and had a general rude demeanor, but we just ignored it because we like the pizza.

I snapped off a few shots with my old point and shoot film camera of my boyfriend eating a slice and made sure no one else was in the pic. No biggie.

In the middle of helping a family of five, (three little kids present at the counter) the fat guy behind the counter starts yelling at me to stop taking pictures. I was really confused because I wasn't including him in the shots.

I smiled and said "But I'm not taking pictures of you," and he threw a handful of ice at my body, hitting me with it, and yelled (pointing at the door) for me and my camera to get lost.

I was shocked, my boyfriend put down his pizza, and we both looked at him and said "Really? We're just eating the slice we bought. We're not causing any harm" and in front of the family he screams for us to get lost and never come back.

My boyfriend said "Hey, calm down, don't yell at my girlfriend" and I was like, "let's get out of here, screw this." So we left.

I've been a super loyal customer for YEARS to this place and I've never been treated with such disrespect. I don't care how good the pizza is, it's not okay to physically threaten your customers. Especially in front of kids. Or anyone for that matter, we paid, we were being peaceful and respectful and minding our own business, that guy was crazy and abusive and should be fired.

I won't ever go back and I will definitely tell everyone to avoid this place.

Cons: Employees are abusive.

I grew up in NY and know pizza. NY pizza is meant to be pretty simple. Which too many West Coasters complain about. They think its about the toppings that make a pizza which is the exact opposite. Without a great crust your just not going to have a great pizza.

These guys honestly make a pizza that rivals the best pizzas in NY. I promise.

The service and decor is what you'll get back east too. Very basic cafeteria looking decor and service with little or no smile or convo. I don't care how much someone smiles to me when they give me food, it doesn't make the food better.

Parking in NW 23rd is really difficult so bring some extra cash for paid parking. You might need it.

People that complain about this place should be ostracized, and publicly humiliated. It's great.

service is what it should be, pithy. pizza is not some gourmet greek bull s!@t. They even take local check.

How can you describe the perfect slice of Pizza? Is there anything better? Escape From New York is the only place I've visited in Portland that offers an authentic NY Slice. Perfect crust, perfect sauce, plenty of cheese. Even a little spicy NY attitude with your order. It's a glorious thing.

Here's the deal. I went into this place for a long time because they serve a good pie. I will never go in there again due to an experience I had fairly recently. After I got my slice I tipped $1.00. It slid in a gap between the two counters where you pay. The person behind the counter said to me, "you know what we call that?" I replied with a smirk thinking that it was no big deal. The person replied "a dumb f@#k/" You people who work their make a great product. Maybe in the future you should hold back on your themed NY attitude that you may think is cute in this city, but I hope your pizza place doesn't do well in the future because your customer service is seriously lacking!

This has always been my favorite pizza in Portland. With so many bad pizza joints in this town, this was always my Salvation when I get the craving. I haven't been there in years and stopped my the other day .Where's the sauce?????????? It looks like they're going the same old route of "a slice of cheese bread" like every other average joint . Please give us more sauce like the old days!!!

Recently moved here and so happy to find this place. Crust is crispy and thin, sauce is so good I actually wanted more - that never happens! Toppings so plentiful they almost collapse the box. Best Value Ever - a large 3 topping pizza - 8 Giant slices was $20.70. Go quickly and enjoy the best !

I'm from Brooklyn, Mom's Sicillain ... THIS is THE bomb ! Best tasting thin crust in town. Its so good, so real, that I usually just order a couple of slices 'plain'. Great Pizza doesn't need to be "loaded" up to give it taste and character.

Ol' Carl has been serving the best "slice and a drink" in the city for 20 + years now. Kudos my friend, KUDOS. Keep up the Good Work.

This is the best pizza in portland. I was reading the bad reviews and the people writing them are a bunch of sissy's! You don't walk into a little whole in the wall expecting people to be your best friend. I'm sorry, but the world does not revolve around prissy little jerks that think they can get some fancy pants pizza wherever they want.
I have been hundreds of times and never had a problem. You walk in, tell them what you want, give em your money, and eat or leave! Why do you have to make small talk? Why do you have ask if they have chicken alfredo pizza with fresh gorgonzola? If it's not very busy, you can push your luck with a few remarks, but for the most part, just shut up and enjoy your pizza so we can all be happy.
I love Escape from New York Pizza! I love ALL the people that work there! I will eat there till I die!!

I had the opportunity to live in NYC last summer and I remember this pizza joint on the corner of West 45th & 9th Avenue. The guys weren't very friendly either, but hey, its NYC...I found that people are rude who are from NYC, its not they try to be, its the way they are and people gotta realize that the staff at Escape from NY is giving the same service as you'd receive on the east coast...Don't be offended, thats the way it is, you tell them what you want and move on. I don't think the staff is terribly rude but the place is pretty busy so excuse them if they don't have time to chit chat. If you want a great staff and so so pizza, go to Chuck E Cheese, but if you want the best pizza in Portland, go to Escape to NY....Here is the standard procedure..

Walk in and say...Slice of Pepperoni (cheese or whatever they have) or whole (insert kind of pizza here). They already know your ordering a pizza so no need to say, Hi, I would like a pizza please...Chances are, they'll look at you and think, SERIOUSLY? No kiddin idiot.

Go for the experience and seriously, if you can't stand it, then take it to go....There ya go..

This is our favorite pizza place in Portland. They are consistently good and their pizza is very New-York-ish with thin chewy crust, red sauce, and garlicy cheese. The atmosphere is laid-back, not romantic by any means, but definitely unique. The staff are not particularly friendly, but they have never been rude and they are helpful.

There are Portland restaurants that are simply iconic and this is one of them. Nestled amongst the boutiques and hipsters of NW 23rd is this grungy amazing New York pizza parlor. I have heard people complain it's dirty, the staff is rude and there is no place to sit. If not sure what people expect from a pizza place called Escape from New York. Part of what makes this place so good and endearing is the fact that it was literally ripped from a NY burrough by the pizza gods and in their infinite wisdom placed down in the heart of upscale Portland to keep us in line, to keep us grounded and spread the gospel of amazing thin pizza by the slice.

This pizza could come straight from New York City itself. Excellent hand-tossed crust. Fold it just like you get the slices in New York. I've been craving something similar, but this passed all expectations. The cheese pizza was near perfect (will ask for extra cheese next time) and I will definitely be back!

A lot gets said about Escape; best pizza outside of New York, rude staff, nothing to get excited about, wondrous miracle of cuisine... What is it really? In my opinion it's an amazingly tasty slice of pizza in a quirky, unique and totally genuine atmosphere that is always memorable and never disappointing. Is it really the best slice outside of New York? Who knows. More importantly, who cares? It's delicious and that's all that really matters. Is the staff rude? Compared to what? The false smile wearing waiters who couldn't care less about your business at the nearby nation/regional chain? Maybe. Maybe not. I say not: that they're just everyday people like you, me and everyone else and they don't see a need to fall all over themselves to take your order and then forget you until tip time comes. They ask what slice you want, what drink to fill, slide your food over and take your cash. That's it. It's called "Counter Service" and whether Portlanders are used to it or not it's just the way it is. I've also read complaints about their lack of specialty pizzas. Well, if you want those then go to Pizza Hut or Round Table. Escape has opted to make basic, simple pizzas and make them better than nearly everyone else. There is something to be said for perfection in simplicity over mediocrity in complexity. The bottom line? In Portland we are blessed with many unique eateries which can be found nowhere else, and Escape From New York Pizza resides at the top of that list. Whether it's the best New York slice outside of the Big Apple or not doesn't matter. It's good and it's ours. What else can you ask for?

Pros: Delicious pizza. Interesting, quirky atmosphere. Memorable date spot.

Cons: Can't think of any.

I used to live down the street from this place and love it. The pizza is always great, and the staff is a no-frills, no-sugar-coated group who's always friendly but not fake, which is hard to find in Portland restaurants. The best things about this place are that it's unpretentious, quick, tasty, and cheap as hell. Not to mention that when I took my fiance here (who's from Italy), he said this was his favorite pizza in the USA..... can't beat that.

Pros: Pizza, staff, price, location

Cons: Parking, no cards accepted

It's pizza. It's not great. It's not terrible. Better than rocko's, worse than Schmizza. The staff is a bunch of jerks and their inability to take cards is annoying. They have good beers. Try it if you want, but there are 4 or 5 better places within walking distance. I think people are taking this whole authentic NY pizza stuff way way too seriously. Never trust someone who says you can't get a good slice outside of _____. It's ridiculous and they're obviously biased. For the most part, pizza is pizza. The pizza they serve here is just some pizza. Nothin special.

So, I called to order 2 pizzas for myself and some friends for pickup. The guy was extrememly rude off the bat. I asked him if they had any specialty pizzas; greek, veggie, meatlover style, whatever. He said "what do you want?" "Um, do you have any specialties" I asked again. "I heard that you guys make awesome pizza." His response was, "Look we offer the basic toppings. Call back when you know what you want." We had been on the phone for less than 30 seconds. Well I wanted a sausage, peperroni, and mushroom, along with a Cheese pizza, but I guess I shouldn't have been so rude to ask what they offered. I drove to Zupans and picked up 3 delicious frozen pizzas which I spiced up with some fresh veggies. The cashier was nice, the pizza was great, and I probably spent less anyhow. Skip this joint!

When I first signed up for this CitySearch account, I did so out of frustration from sites like Craigslist other CitySearch reviews. One of the first reviews I wanted to post was for Escape From New York. It has been my neighborhood slice for ten years.

Indeed, it was my first Portland slice, and I will discount immediately any argument on whether it is authentic New York or not. What is Escape? It is one of my favorite little pleasures. It's a huge, greasy, goopy, slice... good from point to every last bit of the crust.

Stop with the attitude and pretense. This is a pizza slice to crave. The whole milk mozzarella, perfect garlic-y sauce and crust really needs no other toppings. Stick with the cheese. Just eat it.

Don't like the attitude? Deal with it.

I hope Escape never escapes from the hood.

Cons: None. Just find parking and try a slice.

The closest better pizza is "The Rock" (2 locations, Lacey and Tacoma), but then again they don't make anything similar to The Rock's "Bad To The Bone." Their pepperoni pizzas are pretty close.

Pros: Best pizza in Portland area.

Cons: Portland has some really poor pizza places.

I eat alot of pizza and i think escape has good pie it you get a whole pizza and not by the slice. although its not just the pizza that i enjoy about escape its the people who work there they are so unique. also while your eating your pie you can check out the money wall or some other doo dad on the wall. Escape is just an all around good pizza place.

Well, this isn't the "best pizza in the world"; that depends on you and how your day went. It is my favorite pie in Portland about 6 days out of 10. (3 other days, I'll prefer Pizzacato, and 1 pizza day out of 10, I'll wish I were in another city.) NYC pizza is not one thing - there are a zillion varieties, and, amazingly enough, there are people who are regulars at every joint. For instance, there's Patsy's, which is "world famous." Well, which one? The Patsy's in East Harlem is great; the one on E 60th is lame. You think I've got them reversed? Great, go for it; we won't be running into each other at Patsy's. Original Ray's? If you got all the Rays into one place, you could populate a 6th borough. I love the Patsy's uptown, but some young Ukrainian guys in a cellar a block from my mom's place on 3rd Ave at E 57th make a pie which is way good when I'm hungry.

All that being said, Escape's pizza is a lot like the pie I used to buy on the way home from school in Flatbush. It's got a very good crust - way better than the average bear; light, chewy, and as crispy as you tell them to make it. The sauce is mild, as in "it's tomatoes, brethren." There are shakers of garlic powder, grated cheese, chili flakes, and oregano. Dump 'em on and do your thing, unless your thing involves something more complicated than what this place is.

Everyone told me how great this place was, then I went there and got a slice. What a disappointment! It was the blandest pizza I'd ever had. I don't think these people have ever had a real NYC slice of pizza. Tribute's Pizza on NW 23rd and NW Kearney is far better! Go there instead.

I never knew just how much I liked pizza until a friend introduced me to the wonders of "Escape From New York" pizza.

Now this is NOT your thick-crusted-toppings-piled-high style of pizza (which, BTW, you can find at the very good "Flying Pie Pizzeria") but rather is a thin crust authentic New York style pizza.

The crust and sauce is undoubtedly the best I've ever tasted and the toppings are first rate and are added in quantities that are just right; enough to make the pie tasty WITHOUT interfering with the fresh flavor of the sauce or the chewy fresh hand tossed crust.

Grab a slice next time you're out for a walk and take a seat in the fun and slightly off-beat atmosphere (seating is limited so stake out a seat as soon as you walk in).
Better yet grab TWO slices...one plain cheese and one slice of Pepperoni.

While I realize that this is "New York" style of pizza I can't help but identify the flavor with the best of Portland. Whenever I get back to downtown PDX and grab a slice I feel like I'm emmersed in the Portland experience.

Oh...Did I mention that I like it?

Pros: Crust and sauce the best around. Great Portland atmosphere.

Cons: None unless you consider the somewhat limited seating a problem.

great place to grab a slice of pizza while you walk and window shop. Only ever has three kinds to choose from, but each one is excellent. Whole pies are Huge and a good deal.

Walking down 23rd and just catching a whiff of good pizza is enough to drive anyone wild. They'll heat up your slice and get you on your way to having truly authentic new york pizza. They've got different kinds each day and I just can't choose a favorite. The pizza speaks for itself give it a try.

I discovered Escape From New York Pizza years ago, when I came to visit my sister here in Portland. I was born in NY, and lived there for the first third of my life, as such I think I know what NY pizza should taste like. Now let me just say that, Escape From New York, is the closest thing I have ever tasted, to true NY pizza, anywhere in the country. I strongly recommend that anyone who is in the area, who desires NY pizza, eat here.
It's just like getting a slice in Soho.

The pizza is good, not amazing. I don't really want to go back because I heard one of the guys who works there (the owner, I think??) told a customer "we don't serve your kind of people here". It doesn't really matter what they were. Discrimination is not okay.
