The service was very poor. It took over 40 minutes just to get our salads and the salmon I ordered wasn't cooked through. I noted the table across from us, which ordered plenty of drinks and appetizers had much better service than our

I have been long time patron of this establishment but I regrettably agree with the other recent posts. The food and service was o.k.. but for the price I have high expectations and this restaurant no longer meets what I think you should

After the Re-Model, its has gone down hill a bit, been there twice since re mold, and prices have gone through the roof(70 bucks for a Prime steak) and service was not up to par as it used to be on both visits, Waiter had kind of a >care less<< way about evey thing, and for some reason we didnt get a e mail for the 15 percent they used to give you for your bithdays..Had to wait 45 minutes for a table even with advance notice of two weeks..We will not go back again

Longtime Ringside patron. Was looking forward to the re-opening of the Burnside restaurant. Made reservtions a couple weeks in advance, asking for a seat in the "old" portion. I'd heard from others that the "banquet room", was unbelievable noisy. Got there and they said it would be a 2 1/2 hour wait, if we wanted to sit where they had told us they would sit us. In the main dininig room... Couldn't wait 2 1/2 hrs so they stuck us.. guess where. It their so called "wine room". What a joke. This thing has a curved cylindrical brick ceiling that magnifies and focuses all of the room noise. I'd rather go to Texas Road House from now on. At least I can hear myself think. The old Ringside is only a memory. Will find somewhere else in the future. One last suggestion for them... fire your architect.

the waiter was cute but he forgot my salad and forgot to bring me my box to go--but he made sure no extras included in my meal or comped anything. should not have given him a tip

hmmmm......liked the temp location/service better at the temp location

guess i'll just BBQ at home--better food and service

i am really disappointed with the new renovated location--can anyone do it better?

I live in the neighborhood. I buy local. Sorry to say you should avoid the newly re-opened Ringside. I was eager to try the place the first week it re-opened. Unfortunately, their standard 14 oz. rib-eye was ordinary. So, we tried again tonight after a Timbers game. I splurged on the $41.50 bone-in rib-eye but it was overcooked. I sent it back but the kitchen, which sent it back out and said it was fine. Ouch! I'm more done than my steak. I offered to pay for it but said I didn't want a medium-well steak. The manager came out to apologize and offered a complimentary second effort. It was very good but the damage was done. I ate my dinner 20 minutes after my wife finished her meal. This is a steak house. Apply heat to a piece of beef. Should be flawless. Head downtown to El Gaucho.

First visit to the Ringside restaurant. Meh. Not sure if we caught the restaurant on an off night but it wasn??t great. Our table wasn??t available on time, not a big deal as it was a busy Saturday night. However, we were disappointed to be informed that they were out of the prime rib. Sadly they did not bother tell us this at any point prior to ordering our food which necessitated a complete rethink at the last minute when the waitress finally let us know. So I ordered an 8oz filet mignon, medium rare. Half of it was delicious and very tender and indeed medium rare, unfortunately, the sizzling hot metal platter on which it was served continued to cook my steak so it wasn??t medium rare for very long.

Six people sat down for a business dinner with cocktails, wine, appetizers and steaks. The server did really well getting us to a $900 tab. Aside from my $30 pasta being overcooked, everything was pretty good until the end, when the refills stopped coming (soda and water) and the server had to be chased down to get the check. After 30 minutes of being ignored by our waitress, we had to disband, leaving one person behind to attend to the bill. Several in the party were completely ignored, while the server attended heavily to those she thought were picking up the tab. Surprise-- I guess you shouldn't have done that.

The happy hour menu is so phenominal, that I go there about 3-4 times a week to indulge. The staff is ultra professional and friendly.

Must haves on the HH menu are the steak bites, burger, crab cake, potato skins. They also make a mena mojito.

Simply the best HH I've ever experienced. I wouldn't trust any other place for my HH but Ringside.

Well I have to call them today. Been nothing but satisfied with them for 55 years and OOPS!! last night wasn't good for me. Garlic mashed potatoes with lumps the size of Don's thumb and wadded up potatoes skins in the mashed potatoes. Then - the fried chicked was med. rare around the bones. Yuk! I hosted birthday dinner for Don and didn't complain in front of the others but - they will get an ear-ful this morning. No excuse for this lack of quality control. But the onion rings were the epitomy of PERFECT.

My wife and I have dined in the past at Ringside on many occasions. Last Wednesday Nov. 24, 2010, marked my eldest son's birthday at the Fox Tower location. My wife and I hosted my son and daughter-in-law. I am both fair and objective when giving reviews. On this occasion Ringside failed on the signature element of our meal, i.e., the steaks. On this night they were not the best in town by a country mile. All else went well, long story short.

Our 8 ounce filet mignon steaks at $33.50 a piece were ordered medium rare. They arrived medium to medium well. All three were overcooked, had very little flavor and no juices to be seen and enjoyed. I was truly surprised, very disappointed and upset. I wanted to have them all sent back but this was my son's birthday. My son without saying anything didn't even finish his steak.

I wrote a very objective and mostly complimentary email to Ringside management but have not received the courtesy of a response. I presume they don't have to care about one customer. Presumably I have been blamed and "poo pooed."

I wanted to order a bottle of a red wine with dinner. The wine list may win accolades from critics, but when most all the wine prices start at well over $100 per, I couldn't justify it. As it is I felt gouged at $265 for this meal.

Had the management made any decent attempt to respond to my most fair email I could recommend Ringside. They didn't so I cannot.

Going out for a night on the town started at Ringside, the menu , appetizers, drinks and of course specialty cut steaks were perfect. The new restaurant is much nicer than the old set up in NW. I liked the valet service in the front so an easy entrance and exit made the night seemless. They did an outstanding transition to the new location.

Wanted to impress my daughter with a great steak dinner. Ringside!

The restaurant is elegant with most guests being older, or apparanty there on a business expense account. Service was consistently polite, professional, and helpful. We started with their famous onion rings, and they were impressive, cooked perfectly, served with ketchup and french dressing (with bleu cheese). Coffee was not as good as many instant coffees. This is surprising in a coffee town like Portland. I ordered the carmelized onion salad. It was not very carmelized, and had large thick slices of tomato that were difficult to cut. The bleu cheese with it was good. For entrees we both had the 12oz filet mignon with baked potato. The filet came with a knife, and for the 1st time eating a filet, I used it. The steak was very thick, with more gristle than I have ever seen in a filet, or any steak. The flavor was good, but the chewiness was not consistent with this most tender steak cut. Dessert was creme brulee, crunchy and creamy combined. Nice.

Overall, the most impressive aspects were the service, the view of the light show outside the window, and onion rings. Not what I had expected from what is "one of the best".

We got a chance to go to the opening of the Fox tower location of the Ringside and we were really impressed. I have been going to the Burnside Ringside my whole life and know that it would be difficult to move such a Portland icon to a new location but the owners have made a seamless transition combining the best of the old location with this one. I am excited to see the remodel on the Bside location and hope the owners choose to keep a restaurant in the Fox tower as well. I could rave about the food as well but anyone who has been to the Ringside knows that they make one of the best Steaks anywhere. Great job Ringside welcome to the neighborhood.

Ringside just opened in Fox Tower during their remodel at Burnside and the menu/food/service is just like it has been for the last 60+ years - perfect. I have been going to Ringside for decades now and loved the Burnside location, but it was pretty great to have the same incredible food and service with the ambience at the Fox Tower. Parking is easy, there is valet service right in front of the door and for once you can see how clean the restaurant is when there is some natural light coming in. It overlooks the new downtown park which also has some beautiful lighting at night.

I didn't know this place could improve on itself but it has...the bar is much bigger and the energy is phenomenal. I have a feeling they are going to be very busy at happy hour and attract a whole new younger crowd. Ringside is a place we used to go for special occasions only but we will definitely make visits more frequent now.

Enjoyed another fantastic night at Ringside...we were immediately greeted with smiles by the young woman at the hostess stand. We were a few minutes early for our reservation so we made our way to the lounge. Naturally it was crowded at 8:15 on a Friday evening, but we had no problem receiving our martinis. After a short wait the hostess told us a table was open, but she said it was not the "best" table in the house and she invited us to check it out before we decided to sit. We told her we were not in a hurry so we would wait for a better table. Sure, the dining room is small and there isn't a huge difference from table to another, but the fact we were given a choice really made an impression on me! A few minutes later our table was ready...moments later our server arrived to check on cocktails and to introduce himself. The server was extremely polite and friendly without being overly familiar. Our starters were delicious but of course, the steaks are the star. Both steaks were cooked perfectly and arrived at the table sizzling. Just a perfect evening.

My wife and I recently went to Ringside on Burnside to celebrate our anniversary. The food was very good and the service was excellent. Even the Valets were prompt and courteous.

I thought the Halibut was excellent. Avoid the fries though. They were the only sub-par item in relation to everything else.

We shared an orange infused cheesecake for dessert. It was good but did not have the classic cheesecake texture.

I can't speak for the entire wait staff, but we had an older gentleman and he was great.

I have cravings for the onion rings with spicy ketchup at ringside. Then I start to think about the crab cocktail and the delicious filet mignon. I have tried other cuts of meat, however; the filet is the best. The bartenders make some good cocktails as well. The only thing I would suggest is not to take a servers recommendation on wine.

What can I say? This has been named one of America's top 10 steakhouses and it certainly did not disappoint. While the flavor of my 14 oz. New York was immense, it was not as rare as I had ordered (I ordered med rare and got a steak closer to done). They also seared the outside almost too much, as it was quite crunchy - almost too much so.

Overall, I can't wait to go back. The rest of the menu looked extremely appealing, and I cannot wait to try the Prime Rib Eye.

Lastly, the service was top notch! Our waiter called us by name and made sure the entire dinner was perfect!

I want to eat in a dark, intimate setting when I go out. If you want a bright diner, you should go down to the Original. This place remains relatively unchanged since the 70s, and that is half of the charm. The staff is just great, the vibe is warm and welcoming, and the food is right on the money.

Just came back from a company function at the RingSide. I was really exited to be there cause I've been wanting to go to this place for years, but never had the chance. Overall, good experience, however, a bit of a let down. I guess given the reputation of this place (America's top 10 steak houses) I was expecting more.
Parking: Free valet parking right next door - can't ask anybetter in Downtown Portland.
Atmosphere: Why do all steak houses in Portland have to look like you're walking into a dark cave? It was a beautiful day outside, and frankly, I found stepping into a dark restaurant gloomy and depressing. Though everything was clean and well kept, I thought this restaurant needs to seriously things about updating its accommodations to be in par with its competitors. Maybe the sister restaurant in Glendoveer Golf Course may be better?
Menu: What you'd expect from a steak house. Except, choices for the non-steak eaters are pretty limited. Several co=workers didn't feel like steak that night and had a tough time figuring out what to order as the other entrees seemed bland and limited.
The steak was good, but not fantastic (I had better steaks at El Gaucho and Ruth Chris') And better yet in Morton's Chicago, Jay's Seafood in LA to name a few.
Service was fantastic. Everyone was eager to welcome and help in any way possible. I loved all the warm smiles (some may feel the service a bit starchy... but, I like it that way.)
Overall - I would recommend quite a few places in Portland before the RingSide. You won't necessarily leave disappointed, but, I think you would have a much better experience for the same tab.

I love going to the Ringside for the best steak in town! Friendly people with just the right atmosphere! I know that there are others in town that try to compare, but they don't quite reach the mark when it comes to the overall review. The Ringside staff remember your name, their prices are great...and sometimes that corner booth in the lounge is a nice place to just hang out!

This is my favorite Steak house in the area. The prime rib is awesome. The prices are not as high as some of the places downtown but the food is just as good. The staff is friendly and inviting. They send out coupons for your birthday and anniversary if you get on their mailing list and this really helps with the bill.

I went here with my husband and father, both enjoy a good steak. They were pleased with the quality of the meat and the taste. I was informed if it needs to have sauce, it is not good. I say this because I am a vegetarian and usually am a litte short changed at a steakhouse ( broccoli and a baked potato -rah) Not here ! I asked for a vegetable plate and they made me a platter with several yummy vegetables. Love that customer service ! I do not think you will be disappointed.

I made my reservation on 11-13-08 over the phone for my 26th anniversary. . I arrived at the Burnside location, valet my car, stood in the entrance for about 5 minutes. A pretty lady asked my name then checked the computer for my reservation. Another gentleman approached me and stated The person that took the reservation over the phone did not make them for the burnside location. I stated I did not know there was another location as I always ate here. I asked if they could correct the mistake. I was told no it would be an hour wait to seat my wife and I. But they could save the reservation for the other location. I declined. I then left quite mad as they ruined my anniversary at this point , it was 7:17 in the evening and I had to find another place to eat . I was driving east down burnside trying to decide where to go. I used my wife?s gps to find my next destination. I called the London grill at the Benson hotel to see if they had a table. The answer was yes . I was pleasantly surprise the food was much better, the service was impeccable. If anyone has the same problem you know where to go

Cons: fail to take responsability for their reservation desk

My husband and I just moved to Portland from Texas. We have had our fair share of good prime steaks, so we decided to try Ringside for my husband's birthday. He had the bone-in ribeye and I opted for the choice filet. I was hesitant to try the filet since it was not prime, but I was surprised at how flavorful it was. The choice filet was just as good as other prime filets I have had at different steakhouses. My husband said his ribeye was the best steak he has ever had. Like any other native Houstonians, we are pretty picky when it comes to our food. The service was a little slower than I would have preferred, but it was not a problem. Our waiter was very nice and told us all about the history of the restaurant. it was a great experience, and we will be back many more times.

Pros: Great steak, many steak choices, great special occasion restaurant

Cons: Service can be a little slow sometimes, a little dim inside

This is a classic restaurant. Old style and sophisticated. I love a good steak and you can definitely find it here. There are other options too if your tastes do not favor a steak. The service was exceptional.

We had dinner ther over mother's day. It has been a while and the fabulous meal is still on my mind. I have been to a number of nice steakhouses and few compare. From the friendly staff to the overall experience. I love the decore and dim lighting. The food was exceptional. You cannot go wrong, regardless of what you order. A beautiful atmosphere while still being comfortable. I have every intention of going back!!

My husband and I had dinner here last Wednesday night and had a fabulous time. Our server Frank was very knowledgeable and entertaining. We were seated promptly at a great table and the food as always was delicious. My husband and I have both worked in the restaurant industry for many years and have found few other places in town that are as consistent and tasty. Not to mention old school.

This was the first time visiting the Ringside, but have heard great things. We were warmly greeted and seated promptly even though we did not have reservations. Molly our server was excellent, very attentive. The food was dissapointing, in essence they seem to have lost their passion for providing a high quality product. For prime cut steaks they were not have any better flavor or tenderness than than choice grade steaks. Also when a grocery store is offering better quality asparagus than a steak house, there is a problem. Apparently they do not have quality control, spindly asparagus with woody and discolored ends, flavorless hollandaise. Steaks are middle of the road even though they boast prime cuts. We had a 12 oz fillet with baked potato and trimmings and a 22 oz bone in rib eye with garlic mashed potoes(1/4 the size of the baked potatoe). Also they don't leave room for you to fit sides on your plate. Over all they just seem to be going through the motions. I did enjoy the atmoshphere and will probably go back and try something other than a steak.

My husband and I love steakhouses and we love to travel. The one thing we always do when we travel (several times a year) is find a new steakhouse we have never been to. We made reservations at the Ringside because they feature a Kobe Steak. Unforntuately we left before we ever got seated because the staff / manager was very rude. We walked into the bar and grabbed two seats at the bar - other customers who were outside the bar in a waiting area for a table came in and tried to take our seats we were seated in - the manger was called over and stated that we "took" their seats. I am convinced that we were asked to get up because there was a pre-existing relationship between the manager and customer and because we were younger - I felt like I was discriminated against because of my age. I was truly offended. We left immediately went to another steakhouse in the area where we were treated very well and had delightful evening.

My husband and I prefer this location. We normally eat at the bar. The dinning area is for older people. We ate there as a family but our parents thought it made them felt old. Older people tend to cut in the bar too. Even though they see you waiting for the next available table, they still walk pass you for a table. We liked the previous waitress better. She was there for awhile. She always remembered us and even saved us the best table in the bar. We brought our friends there several times. They loved the food, but felt the atmosphere was too old for them. We feel the same way, but the service is a notch better than the other location.

I called for a reservation and was greeted with "you guys", short, rude by girl answering the phone during a week day morning. Not a good start for such a "fine dining restaurant". Our dinner for my son, daughter and myself was okay, server forgot my glass of wine (told him to forget it after I had finished with my dinner) and seemed to be in a big hurry to get us out by piling dishes of food right after another, we felt rushed. Used to be our favorite place, but we're going someplace else!

Excellent, excellent, excellent food. Did I say the food was good? The waitress brought us a flashlight to read the menu. Very reminiscent of the good old boy's club but you leave full and content. This is good eats folks.

I recently treated family and friends to a special occasion dinner at The Ringside. I come from a family that owned a restaurant meat supply company so i know good beef. The steaks at Ringside were too much fat and grisl and not enough meat. We ordered the bone in New Yorks and the flavor of what edible meat was available was just so-so and definitely not worth trying to carve around the grisl. Salads were good and onion rings OK but not that great. The service was acceptable but very slow. All in all a big disappointment and not worth the price.

Simply one of the best steakhouses on the west coast, period. The food is a bit pricey, but the quality of service, food, and experience make this place the one to beat in terms of steakhouses in the area.

My husband and I love to go to Ringside for a great steak and wonderful evening! The crab cocktail is wonderful as is their onion rings, (large order! for 2). We always call for reservations ahead of time as you will be disappointed if you don't on busy Friday and Saturdays. They have onsite valet, very convenient to PGE field for those Friday night games. The New York comes sizzeling on a plate with potatoes. The French onion soup should not be missed or their lettuce wedge for a salad. The wait staff are all excellent and always know the best of the wine list. For those of you who like specials, they have a special before 5:45 menu that has excellent prices. Ringside's banana's foster is also quite yummy. We also love the funky chimney and fireplace in the main dining area. The only downside is the space is quite cramped and if you are out in the middle the traffic is a bit much. Otherwise, relax, enjoy, slow down and have a wonderful evening!

We went here on a busy Sunday night, and while the food was good, the service was not! Our waiter had zero personality and was extremely slow. Slow taking our dirnk order, slow bringing the drinks, slow taking our dinner order, slow bringing the food...you get the idea. I know there is such a thing as a "leisurely" dining pace, but this was beyond that. Food was good, though, and the atmosphere is nice. Friendly hostess, valet staff, etc., just not our waiter. Too bad...if he had been a bit nicer, we probably would have raved about the place.

I took my boyfriend to dinner at the Ringside on Burnside for his birthday and dropped a C-note between the two of us, and I'm glad I did. It was the best meal I've ever eaten. The steaks were incredibly good, the onion rings were super. We had the asparagus side. I still dream of that meal.

I recently made reservations here for a special dinner. My boyfriend just graduated from college and I wanted to take him someplace where I thought he would get special attention during the dinner service, as this restaurant advertises special occasion dining as a specialty. In fact when I made the reservation I was asked if I was celebrating anything special, and I told them of my boyfriends graduation. There were four of us in total, with reservations at 7 PM. We were there 15 min early, attempted to get a drink in the bar while waiting for our table. Getting the drink took 15 min, the bartender ignored me. We were seated 10 min. late, and the hostesses were snotty little things. Our waiter dragged his booty taking our drink order, starter order and took FOREVER to take our main course down. We were there at least 1 hour before we even ordered our main dish. During this entire time there was not one mention of my boyfriend's graduation by our reluctant server. Why was I even asked when I made the reservation if they were not going to acknowledge it? I was really disappointed and I don't know what the big deal is about this place. The only positive was the steak, which although good, was not the best I have ever had. I guess when a place becomes established they can afford to treat some of their new customers like poo-poo.

Pros: steak

Cons: everything but the steak, but it really isn't worth it

This place has an overt 'old boys club' feel, so you'd better brush up on your wine and steak trivia if you want to get in good with your waiter. The restaurant is cozy and intimate (in fact, my knees got very intimate with the extremely low tables) and is a great place to spend a lot of money on dinner.

That said, the food, notably the onion rings, was delicious.

I love to eat out at fancy steakhouses, so I am little biased already. There are two locations for the Ringside, one near Gresham and the Burnside location that this review showcases. The Burnside location has a better atmosphere and waitstaff. I have had good service here always, so I am surprised by the reviews with bizzare waitstaff behavior. The wine list is long, but disorganized and our waiter didn't know what to recommend when we described to him what we liked. I think a waitstaff should always know the wine they serve, especially at a steakhouse where the wine can compliment your steak so well. However, this is one of the few steakhouses where the hefty pricetags actually include a starch and green, whereas most of them are just as spendy and the items are ala carte. The restaurant itself is very dark, tradtional steakhouse feel.

Alright, I've been to their Sunday Happy Hour, and it was GREAT! Had some out of town guests last week and decided to bring them here. Now the food was hard to judge because of our waiter. He completely ruined our experience. From the minute we sat down to when we got up and left. He first brought us onion rings without us even having ordered them. While I know their onion rings are great, 2 people had allergies at the table. We kept asking him to take them away, he refused, he actually split them up among the guests, saying we were narrow minded! Even after we told him of the food allergies.

If that wasn't bad enough, when our meal was brought out, he went ahead and decided to season our meat right in front of us without asking or being asked to do so. He was just BIZARRE! His behavior was so disturbing, I was embarrased for my guests. Needless to say we hightailed it out of there without even finishing. It's a shame, I'm sure their dining room experience is great, but I think it will be a long time before I bring any out of town guests there.

I'm a vegetarian but this place (which is famous for steaks) treated me very well. Service was excellent and my partner enjoyed her steak very much. I thought my salad and onion soup were very good.

I was surprised to learn that you can smoke inside in Oregon - unfortunately we were in a bit of a hurry and the non-smoking section was full.

The ambiance is a bit formal - the lighting is dim and the wood is dark - but I was fine with my short pants and flip flops.

PROS: Excellent service
CONS: Smoking inside

Ok, clearly "maguro," the person who wrote a comment two below this one has no clue about what a steak house really is! He obviously feels more at home in a commercial restaurant, not Portland's finest. It's all about stamina and quality in this town, Portlander's are not the easiest to please when it comes to food since there are so many great restaurants in the city. It says something when a restaurant has been around for over 50 years, right? I would venture to say that it is almost impossable for this staple restaurant to ever pass it's "prime (rib)." If you are looking for an eclectic atmossphere with some of Portland's finest service and food this is the place to be. Just take a look around at the menus on the walls and read what all the celeberties have to say about it. Not to mention the awards that cover the entry wall. Yes, some may say that it is out dated but that's what makes it The Ringside and keeps us all coming back.
FYI: maguro, a prime rib will always be marvled in fat, if you don't like it get a Filet Mignon (know your meat before you complain) and creamed spinach is just that creamed not steamed. Better luck to you at Portland Steak and Chop!
