Standard Tv & Appliance is its own worst enemy sometimes

by Mark S.

We just bought a refrigirator, washer and a dryer.
We were told the delivery was going to be today.
I just called and they did not have in inventory what they sold.

My wife took the day off for the delivery,

I called at 1100.
Standard Answer (No Pun Intended) Thats not my resposibility.
Was on hold for 20 minutes.
Hung up on once.

No sense of urgency at all.
A manager Greg Malone finally took some resposibility and did what was required.
Job well done

I hate that one must be a bit of a pain in the butt to get their attention.

Once again, I am pleased

by David H.

I have done two major purchases with Standard TV and Appliance in the past 3 years, both times, sales people were friendly, helpful, and most importantly, RELAXED, not high pressure or full of crap. I had to have a service call yesterday and repairman, Kevin, was personable, honest, and conscientious. He arrived at the time he said he would, as did the delivery men who brought a new product to me today. I continue to be very satisfied and will continue to do more business with them in the future. And they have free cookies and coffee for people in the showroom.

Worst service ever...

by Dorothy K.

My husband and I remodeled our kitchen in May and we bought all of our appliances from Standard. The salesman was great but that is where it stopped. The service is the worst I have every experienced. Long story short: we ordered a fan for our gas cooktop that retracts into the counter. Once up it would not go down. It took us tons of phone calls, numerous visits from the service man, lots of threats and two months to finally get another one installed. The reason I am on their site today is to get the phone number for the service department. Yep, you guessed it. The fan is not working properly. I would never shop Standard or recommend them to anyone I know. Shop Sears.

We got a great deal at the warehouse sale, but...

by Steven B.

This one is hard to give a star rating, so take that with a grain of salt.

We needed a 24" double wall oven, and initially went to the showroom on 82nd, not realizing the hugely advertised warehouse sale was a bit down the road. The KitchenAid that we wanted was $2500, the best the saleswoman said she could do for us was $2200, way out of our budget. While there, we found out about the warehouse sale, and asked her about it; she said she'd already checked, and that the oven we wanted was not there, giving us the impression (I know, very subjective) that we'd be wasting our time going there. We told her we were going to go look anyway, and she seemed a bit bummed.

It was a madhouse at the sale, but my girlfriend immediately found the exact model we were looking for, priced at $900... Done! Checking out, we paid the $50 for home delivery. My back isn't always in the best shape, so we asked to make sure that meant they would deliver it INSIDE our house. After speaking with a manager, we were assured that that was in fact the case. A few days later, when the delivery arrived, the guys said that they were only to deliver to our driveway, and had we paid $100, they would've taken it inside. Not that big of a deal, but not what we were told, either.

Overall, a basically positive experience, but you have to be on your toes if you want to get a good deal, and there's a bit of slipperiness here and there.

**UPDATE**

A few days after delivery, we had a professional come to install, and after five hours (work had to be done on the wall opening and support), we were very disappointed to find that the oven didn't work at all. Wouldn't even light up the digital readouts. We called both Standard and KitchenAid, and being leary of Standard at this point, went with the KitchenAid repairman, who would be able to come by in five days. The most interesting info we got from the astonished KitchenAid rep was that the oven we had just purchased as brand-new on 10/3/09 was a 2003 model!

The repairman from A&E Factory Service was amazing, and he immediately ascertained that the oven was missing a much-needed transformer. Luckily for us, he had one on his truck, and after a quick install, the oven worked like a charm. He also let us know that even though it was almost 7 years old, it had never been used, and it was a great model as far as reliability, which was a big relief.

And so far, so good on the oven; would we have purchased it if it had a tag letting us know it was a 2003 model? I don't know, but probably not.

Service is terrible

by Chris J.

Repairman came out to fix our Bosch washing machine. Needed to order a new part, and so we tried to schedule a time for him to return. The best he could say was "sometime Friday afternoon between 2-4." I took the afternoon off waiting and when he finally came at 5, surprise, he didn't even have the part! So he said he'd order another one an call back right away. Never called back. When I finally got through to the repair department (after being on hold forever) to reschedule, the best they could say was that the repairman will call next week ...

Standard Tv & Appliance was a positive initial experience

by Sondra L.

I purchased my home appliances 8 years ago - fridge, washer and dryer. The prices were very good, service was excellent. The delivery was made when it was scheduled and installation was complete and correctly done. I had no complaints and intended to go there to purchase a microwave. Frankly, after reading the reviews, I'm having second thoughts.

Standard Tv & Appliance Portland Oregon Review

by Adam b.

I purchased a Sony 30 inch Trinitron high definition television, custom stand and the NSI Repair Warranty from Standard TV and Appliance at 5240 SE 82nd Ave, Portland Oregon - (503) 777-3377. When Standard Television and Appliance was taking the money everything was great and they wasted no time in making the delivery.

The Sony Television performed well until spring of 2009. The Sony High Definition television began to experience problems. Still within the warranty period I called NSI their repair company at their national toll free number at 888 446 8008.

NSI has been acquired by Warrantech which offers a range of warranty, extended warranty and service agreements on Computer Electronics, Appliances, Automotive, Home.

Although I purchased a complete bumper to bumper warranty the Warrentech Representative advised me that there would be an additional charge of approximately eighty five dollars.

Mind you NSI aka Warrentech had not even seen the Sony Television.

I notified the managers at Standard TV and Appliance which said Bad NSI they should have taken care of you and gave me a different company to call. They apologized for NSI aka Warrentech and stated that was not the way the repair process should have gone.

Today is August 11, 2009 and Standard Television and Appliance is still writing service contracts with NSI aka Warrentech.

Standard TV and Appliance has no standards!!

by Lewis C.

I purchased a Maytag Neptune front load washer and dryer only 3 years ago. I purchased Maytag because of their wonderful reputation however, Standard TV seems to believe no appliance shall ever need repair. At least it seems that way when you call for service. Sure, they are really good about getting the product out the door, but that is where the red carpet stops! I've battled with them for over a week to get a part in the door (at Standard) and a tech to come install. This afternoon was to be my install date/time, but I've just received a call stating that services rendered will now cost me an extra $245.00!!! I spoke with two separate people that both stated the broken drum for my dryer would be covered under manufacturers warranty. However, when it comes to install, that all changed.
I received a real run-around on their phone system as well while trying to simply get things underway as this all began. I left a message on the phone system and received a return call 3 days later. This seems ignorant on the company's behalf and is very frustrating as a consumer. The fact that the drum on my 3 year old dryer is broken at the weld was a frustrating start for me as well.
I called Maytag and they are going to help me by selling me the part for 50% off which is very helpful. I then called Standard back to see if they would honor this, or my original quote but they said they would not. I'm committed to speak of Standard TV and Appliance with a rotten, stinky taste that has resided in my mouth. Standard TV has no standards. Don't be fooled.
Ok. Since I initially wrote this review, Standard TV has called me and made ammends to clean up the mess they had left. I will have to say that they have really stepped up and taken care of things. They've come in, repaired my dryer and even purchased the drum for the dryer in response to this and an email. I told them I would honor what they have done and make sure and edit this review. The only bad thing is that it took this much work on my behalf when there should have been no issue in the first place. Why must we (consumers) always have to fight now days for the service we deserve in the first place?
Thank you Standard for stepping forward and coming to a quick resolve in this matter!
Lew

DO NOT SHOP HERE! THEY ARE THIEVES!

by W B.

We recieved our brand new fridgedaire refridgerator and it was defective. The day they brought it, it started making the most horible noises. They told me "its normal", yet sent someone out to fix it. Hmm if its normal WHY WOULD THEY SEND SOMEONE TO FIX IT?

The thing is still making noises, it is so loud it woke me out of a sound sleep thinking someone was breaking into our house.

If you are looking for a quality appliance, go with a reputible company such as Sears. This company will jerk you around and treat you like you are stupid and not take you seriously!

Now we have to waste more time, and energy having someone else come out to "fix" it again (but remember its "normal" )
Unfortunately, this site doesn't allow you to give negative stars, which is exactly what I would prefer to give.

Great price...Great service...and Local !!

by mary d.

This is a great place to shop and support our local economy! I was looking for a place to recycle my TV only to find out there are few places offering this service (ecycle program), Standard is the only local retailer that is participating in this program. So, I dropped off my TV and got a great deal on a new one, the sales person was helpful and gave me my space and new what they were talking about. They also had great deals on mattresses (which I didn't even know they carried), they gave me an extra $100 off to buy both! There are several things to consider when shopping (particularly in this economy), price, quality, customer service and people that know about what they sell. Standard is all of the above, they are also local to our community which means my dollar stays here and supports local families who reinvest dollars back into our communities.

h giggs

by Harry G.

I have bought appliances and a TV at several companies in the past and decided to shop at Standard TV and Appliance despite some of the reviews. I don't know where all of the others have shopped, but what a great experience! I would challenge you to go to HD, Lowe's, Best Buy or even Sears to get the service that we did. Standard also has a service department and there own customers take number one priority. I even had an appliance out of warranty that they went to bat on with the manufacturer and got it replaced. There prices are fair, but will price match anyone, their sales staff knows what they are doing (which is hard to find anywhere anymore) and they have more to choose from than anywhere I have been. Great experience, a totally satisfied customer. H.

A nice, no-pressure experience

by derek p.

After reading the reviews, I was a little hesitant to purchase at Standard. I was determined to shop around prior to making any purchases, and dutifully added Standard to my list of stores to consider. While I don't doubt that some people have had bad experiences, I think it must depend on who ends up helping you. My wife and I went to the store on 82nd simply to check prices and compare models, with no intent to buy that day. We were greeted by a salesperson, Dan Mudge, who asked us if we would like help and then actually left us alone when we told him we did not. After we had looked around for a bit, he walked over to ask us if we had any questions. We were pretty set on getting your standard, rather inexpensive set and asked him a few questions about a whirlpool top load set. He answered our questions and then asked if we had considered a front load machine. We said no, at which point he mentioned how they were much more energy efficient. I asked him the specifics and was surprised to learn just what a difference it makes. I also had no idea that you could be eligible for a tax credit for purchasing an energy efficient machine. When we told him that we were not ready to buy, he didn't pressure us. He simply gave us his card, some information to take home, and thanked us for coming in. My wife and I shopped around, and again were a bit surprised to find that Standard in fact did have the lowest price. We settled on the Whirlpool 9200 series and came back to Standard to make the purchase. Our delivery went off without a hitch and I cannot begin to explain how great a front load washer is after trading in my 15 year old relic. All in all it was a pleasant experience, but honestly it was the salesperson that made the difference. If Dan is still working there, I would recommend him.

Never Shop Here Again

by Elaine Y.

The commercial for Standard TV & Appliance is a joke. We walked into the store on 82nd and looked around, not one person acknowledged we were there and with only about 5 cars in the parking lot I knew they weren't busy. We had to find someone to help us pick a refrigerator & they acted like we were putting them out. When we decided on the one we wanted I asked for the door to be switch and they said we could pick it up at the warehouse later that day. Well we called later and they said it was ready to pick up. When we got there it wasn't ready, the door hadn't been changed and after them grumbling about having to change the door after 90 min we finally loaded it in our truck. Well wouldn't you just know it, but within a week of the warranty expiration the refrigerator started filling with water at the bottom. I called Standard TV and they were so rude and told me there was nothing they could do but send out a repair man that would cost a small fortune. My sister had told me to go to Hamilton's if I wanted good service and price. Now I need to replace my 6 year old fridge and get a washer & drier. This time I'm going to Hamilton's, we will never go to Standard TV and Appliance again. Poor Service & Quality!!

Unbelievable experience

by J H.

My first purchase three years ago of a washer and dryer from Standard was a bad experience. The tops of both units were scratched. They installed the units reverse of the house set up, washer where the dryer was to be and visa verse but I didn't realize it until they were gone. (just moved into the house) I asked them to switch the doors as they were reversed for proper movement of clothes but they groaned and told me they had other deliveries. As for the scratched tops, only one was replaced since I gave up after months of phone calls for the other top.
Three years later I thought I would try again, but only because they were the only ones in town to have the microwave I needed in stock.Today was the worst. I called and placed an order for an in stock microwave. I could pick it up at the warehouse. I drove there and was told it was at the store. Went to the store. They couldn't find the microwave. Finally the worker came out with an uncased unit which was dented and scratched. What? I paid for a new unit. The manager came out then left without a word. Finally he came back and said a unit was at the warehouse. He actually said to me in a very sarcastic tone, "I had to pull a unit out of someone Else's order since you won't accept this one." (the damaged one) The salesman and the worker both apologized and appeared embarrassed by their bosses comment . The manager appeared angry at ME. I had to then return to the warehouse to pick up the unit. I would have walked out a long time prior but I desperately needed the microwave and had already paid for it. Will I ever use Standard TV and appliance again? NOT ON MY LIFE!!

customer service

by Shari K. | insider Insider | Rank: 18,162

I hate to say it, but I have to agree with the poor customer service reviews. I have always gotten great service in-store and the sales personnel I have worked with have gone above and beyond. The trouble comes in the delivery department. If the item is not in stock, you have no idea when you will receive it. You may be given a fabricated date, but I have never had an appliance delivered - to my home or the warehouse - on time. And finding any concrete information is like pulling teeth. The customer service people I spoke with were not forthcoming, and when I did get to the store to pick up my items this girl put on a very annoyed air - as if I had caused her some tremendous inconvenience with my irritating questions. Not good, guys!

Proud to work there! Thank you for your repeat business!

by Tony G.

For over 11 years I have worked for Standard. I even worked at the small Woodstock store- the original store. Most people have worked there for many years and are quality people who care about the customer. No one stays in business for over 50 years without doing many things right.

No company is perfect, but consider where your money goes when you go to a national chain? Often not back into your, and in my, local economy.Where you buy, may determine who remains in business.

There are many wonderful happy customer. Thank you for your business.

Over doing it a bit??

by Mike N.

I have purchased many items from Standard over the years and yes it has changed some, probably due to management changes or the owner not being involved enough, but I certainly think most of these reviews are over done. When I went in for a remodel and said I was a few months out I did not get the help that I thought I deserved. That being said, when I went in to purchase I was most certainly helped out and given a great deal. When I read that some one had to beg to purchase something I laugh. When the gay couple said they were ignored I laugh. The salepeople there do not make money if you do not buiy so please try to at least write the truth. I have to imagine that if you were rude when you were first asked for help I would ignore you as well. Get off your high horse and realize that your attitude problem when you first walked in is probably why you didnt get helped. Try to come down to earth next time and treat people as you would like to be treated.

Poor Customer Service

by K J.

I recently remodeled my kitchen with new appliances all bought from Standard TV & Appliance Beaverton. I did careful research for selecting each appliance. I was told by a salesman that the refrigerator's finish would match the finish on all the other appliances. WRONG! It doesn't. Unfortunately, I could not verify its match until the refrigerator was installed. Too bad I can't return it because once a special order appliance is installed it can NOT be returned. I also purchased a 5 year extended warranty. I'm still waiting for paperwork to show what is and what is not covered.
....Not too happy with the customer service at this store. Next time, I will be shopping elsewhere!

Very disappointed with the poor service at Standard....

by Matt M.

My wife and I recently purchased a washer/dryer at Standard in Beaverton, Oregon. The washer was delivered within 10 days, while the dryer took over three weeks. With a newborn at home and laundry stacking up we were forced to make over a dozen phone calls before we had any concrete information as to the delivery of the dryer. I eventually called the corporate buyer's boss and he took no action, except to call the salesman and apparently yell at him for trying to help a customer get information that the salesman could not provide.

We were warned before visiting Standard that they are only concerned with making a sale and that service was terrible - we should have listened. We will never make a purchase at Standard TV & Appliance again.

Don't make the same mistake we did- the service is the worst I have ever encountered.

2 month delivery!

by patsy c.

OK, I ordered a very expensive range in late march. First it was on back order for three weeks, then we set up a delivery date . On the appointed day I waited all day, only to finally get a call at 5: that my stove was not being delivered! I set up another date, take ANOTHER day off work to wait as they only deliver to my area mon. or wed. I wait. To my amazement I get a mid day call saying my stove is not on the delivery truck. this wednesday is supposed to be the magic day my stove arrives, and yes I will be taking a THIRD day off work to wait for it! It is now mid may.

The Straight Scoop on Standard TV and Appliance

by Jerry R.

At Standard TV and Appliance, each customer is greeted when they arrive at the store. The only time they would not be greeted is when all of the salespeople are busy with other customers. Our owner wants each customer to be welcomed into our stores. All of the salespeople work on commission and that is a big plus for you because they will work hard to make sure that you buy products that you will like. We want you to be happy because that is the only way you will come back to see us again. We have more repeat customers that new customers and that is because most of our customers like us and that is because we are very concerned about the customers we serve. Because we work on commission, we learn our products well and that is a benefit to you because we will not waste your time looking at every product we sell. We offer package discounts for multiple item purchases. When a customer is pleased with their purchase, (we get very few returns due to a customer not liking the products they purchase.) That is due to people helping you select and not pushing their house brand. We have the biggest selection of products for you to look at.

If it sounds like I might be a little biased, I admit it, my title is Sales Consultant and I work at the 82nd street store.

When people come in and just look at the products without talking to a salesperson, they are shorting themselves of the knowledge of experience. Standard has seasoned salespeople that will help you decide the right products to select.
We meet or beat any price, period!

I invite my friends and family to shop at Standard TV and Appliance, and would recommend this company over any big store in town.
Sears/K-mart---Chicago, Ill,
Home Depot---No corp. office in Portland
Lowes---No corp. office in Oregon
Best Buy----No corporate office in Oregon
Standard TV and Appliance---Locally owned and operated since 1947 in SE Portland.
Standard is a local company where local people and businesses are supported. Standard donates to local charities and sponsors many events. We support the local sports teams as well.

If you have had an unpleasant shopping experiance at Standard, give us a call, and talk to one of the sales managers or customer relations team if your salesperson does not give you the satisfaction you want. "We want satisfied customers, and it you are not satisfied, we want to hear about it.

If you have made it this far, thanks for listening. When I read the reviews, I thought you deserved what my experience with Standard has been.

Service

by Anonymous

We purchased our first appliance at the Woodstock Standard approximately 20 years ago. The services associates with this purchase was good. Two years ago we remodeled our kitchen and laundry rooms, with new appliances throughout. We purchased, with an extended warranty, all of the appliances from Standard. We have now waited for almost a month for our range to be repaired. We are told that the part came in incorrectly two times - after we made arrangements on three different occasions to be home during the scheduled repair period. I have been told that the "Service Manager" would call me on two separate occasions to discuss this matter. I have not been contacted. I was told this morning, that the part had "just come in . . . and they could schedule the repair for next week." Not good enough, I said, they need to be here today or tomorrow. After being put on hold for several minutes, I was told that the repair would occur today between 3 and 5 . . . we'll see.

No Customer Service and Damage To My Home

by Jane D.

I have never received worse customer service, Standard TV and Appliance staff took over six months to fix my oven because they continually ordered the wrong part, failed to show up for service calls etc. My washer and dryer were also installed incorrectly and caused a flood in my home that resulted in having to have all the flooring removed and replaced. The customer service has routinely been lacking, staff has been rude, failed to return phone calls, and had no regard for the damage they caused to my new home. I can not say it enough; never buy from Standard TV and Appliance.

Some insightful information about buying at standard

by Anonymous

I see some of you saying that standards prices are high or you'll find it elsewhere for less. This is in fact no true. Standard guarantees the lowest price just like everyone else does. The reason you feel that you were ripped off is not simply from not doing your homework but simply because you did not communicate with your associate at the establishment you favor your business to. Even after buying your product most every retailer will guarantee there price for thirty days, if not they aren't worth there salt. So in short next time get the price you see lower somewhere else on a business card and present it to your associate instead of complaining about how you got ripped off. For those with enough intelligence to do so the first time, good for you, for the rest, well maybe next time instead of spending all your time bashing a store maybe you could put your energy into saving yourself some money. This tip from a well reputed sales associate and customer alike...

Poor customer service

by Anonymous

Re: GBLT Unfriendly. I don't doubt the experience, but I wouldn't be too sure it stemmed entirely from prejudice. From what I've heard and experienced, Standard's responsiveness to customers leaves a lot to be desired no matter what your orientation.

I'm a straight female who's tried to buy two different products from Standard. The first time, for a dishwasher, I made two trips. On the first trip, one saleslady was on the phone to a friend and ignored me, two other salesmen were talking to each other, said they'd be with me in a minute and kept on talking. I waited about 15 minutes, approached the two men again, said "I'd like to buy a dishwasher, please," and was told "we'll be right with you." 15 minutes later, they were still talking (about a movie, I think) and I left. I thought maybe the problem was that it was the weekend, and Standard was one of the few companies that carried the brand I wanted, so I went back a couple nights later. This time I got someone to help me within 5 minutes. He showed me one dishwasher and then a couple came in, he said, "I'll be right back," and went to help them. A half hour later, tired of waiting, I drove to Sears and bought a KitchenAid dishwasher. Took all of 10 minutes.

The second time I was trying to buy a flat screen TV (mind you, I'm buying, not just looking). Another 15 minute wait while the salespeople chatted with each other. This time they didn't get a second chance; I drove down the street and bought one at Best Buy.

So...maybe they have good prices, maybe they have good appliances, maybe they have good installation and after-sale service. I wouldn't know; I've never gotten that far. I don't know why Standard TV & Appliance thinks I couldn't possibly be a customer, but other stores don't seem to have that problem...so that's where I'll buy.

Right now I need a new built-in refrigerator to replace the SubZero that the previous owners purchased from Standard. I just don't have time to wait for the salespeople to get around to me, so I'll buy it somewhere else.

GBLT Unfriendly

by Anonymous

As a Gay Couple, we were ignored. We attempted to engage several salespeople in getting our appliances there, to shop locally and support the local economy.

However, we were ignored and basically walked around. Even when asking if we could purchase a gas stove. We purchased our TV, Stove, Refrigerator, and Dishwasher elsewhere.

So after 30 minutes, we left.

Inventory Control Lacking; Refund Procedure Cumbersome

by K.A. V.

I bought a stove hood that was supposedly in stock, and would be sent to a store more convenient for me for pickup. (The salesman did give me $10 off the list price.) It was due there 4 days after I purchased it. On the appointed day, I called to make certain it was there, and was told the store didn't have it in stock. I was referred back to the salesman, who checked and tried to substitute a different hood. After driving 10 miles to the warehouse, I checked with my installation person, who said the substitute hood would not fit. When I told that to the warehouse person, she informed me that she could not issue a credit for the purchase, but that I would have to drive up to the 82nd street store. That process took an additional 20 minutes, but it was completed. When I told the cashier that I had wasted several hours over this inventory mistake, and the resulting hassle getting a refund, his reply was "Things like that happen with contracts." Thirty years ago, I bought appliances for three houses from this store. They have lost a customer after this mixup, and the attitude of the staff.

Refrigerators!

by Letanya B. | insider Insider | Rank: 12,902

Standard is your typical "salesman" environment. They look like they should be selling used Buick's or something. Nevertheless they have a great selection and great prices. I compared prices on fridges like crazy before realizing I couldn't find anyone who could beat their prices. They also have a "back room" with display and old models for a deeply discounted price. We almost bought a TV from the back room but it had a scratch on the screen. They delivered promply when they scheduled us for and hooked up the ice maker & water line.

PROS: Great prices Great selection
CONS: Greasy salesmen

Service is slipping!

by Krystal N. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 1,999

We have done a lot of business in the past with Standard buying for rentals or new construction homes. However, now that my favorite long time salesman is gone :( I have yet to find anyone who is knowledgeable, easy to work with, and able to cut a little deal hear and there. They do have some reasonable priced stainless steel pieces ( I believe Fridgidare?!?!?!) that are nice value for money.

by Heather M. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 619

We went here to check out their used ranges after calling them to see what there ad was all about. Well lets say what they had and their prices were a complete joke! For $40 more than what the wanted for some horrible looking items I got a brand new one at Best buy!
