The service was fast. I loved the soup. It was our first time there and they made a very good impression. There was free parking if you went after 5ish. The Mandarin Scallops were awesome and so was their orange chicken.

I'm glad to have stopped by here for our last night in downtown Portland! Our friends took us here for a nice dinner. They could not stop talking about their Sizzling Soup, Mandarin Scallops and Three Flavor Taster!!! I wanted to see what the hype was about! Everything was so perfect and delicious and this was one of the best soup that I have ever tasted! Moreover, it's their commitment to "NO MSG" which will permanently keep them from ever being authentic. Next time I go back here, I will make the same order for sure, and maybe try their Roasted Peking Duck cos it's one of my favorite Chinese dishes as well.

The service was pretty quick too. We got our food within 10 minutes which was short with the amount of people seating inside (The house was full that night).

Great food, Great prices, A Big plus for their No MSG dine in or take out and FREE Parking offer !!Don't forget to Validate, FREE parking is good for Dinner (after 5) [Always a nice Surprise in Portland area]

At first glance, this restaurant seems ok. The vibe wasn't bad. They seated my family in the back all by ourselves, so it was quiet. the place was tidy and clean, the service was good.. The first bad sign was the menu.. it listed almost no vegetables in the dishes.. but who knows, maybe they do put them in there.. So we placed an order for several dishes. Less than five minutes later, all six dishes showed up. We all sat with mouths agape - how could any place possibly prepare 6 different dishes in 5 minutes? My hope dwindled.. we feasted on six dishes of mediocre, bland tasting, oily plates of pork, chicken, and shrimp. Some were tolerable, but none were decent. The sweet and sour pork was the worst i've ever had. The dishes were around $11 each, which for chinese food isn't cheap. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I've had better chinese food from the safeway deli.

Great Food; Great Service!!

Lunch or dinner; it's a great place to dine.

Headed for an event such as at nearby Civic Auditorium?
If you're running late let them know. They do their best to cater to event-goers. They'll speed it up if at all possible.

Parking?? Not a problem. There's free parking in the adjacent parking structure. You can even leave your car there while you go to the event after dining.

I took my girlfriend there before we went to go see the play Wicked. She had Sweet and Sour Pork and I had Cashew Chicken. We decided to share the two between us and the waiter was really nice about it. Our dinner was great and so was the service. It was a great precursor to the evening we had later! Great Job you Guys!

Our party of nine elected the recommended large party option at $12.95/person this evening. I thought this was quite a good deal and we definitely got our money's worth in quantity (we took home about half of every dish). We got hot tea to drink and our water glasses were conscientiously refilled. For starters we had a large bowl of egg drop soup, a large bowl of hot and sour soup, and a large plate with vegetarian spring rolls, pot-stickers, and shrimp puffs. For our entrees we received a large bowl of rice, and large plates of sweet and sour pork, orange chicken, chow mein, green beans, shrimp, beef with vegetables (I don't have the menu in front of me so I'm a little vague on the exact names). All of the food was classic americanized, oversauced Chinese. If you like this style, you'll love this place. The service was a little spotty but not terrible. However, if you've ever had authentic Chinese food, this place will not make you happy. Lots of oil, lots of sauce. The shrimp dish was the best, the sweet and sour pork next. The green beans were not overcooked. But all was depressingly standard American Chinese - too much sugar, too much oil, too many carbs. No dish allowed the underlying ingredients to come through. None had the right mixture of spicing (for instance, the hot and sour soup was actually bland). The good news is the children found the food edible. The bad news is the adults found it all over sauced and under spiced. No subtle flavors here. Since we ordered the standard fare, perhaps we deserved to get the standard fare. But I won't go there again.

Food was terrible, service was worse. The only thing this place had going for it was its mediocre ambiance. Would never go back here again.

My family loves to got to this restaurant. We live about a 1/2 hour away so usually are only able to go for special occassions. We've been there several times over the years and have never been dissappointed. The service is great, the food is really wonderful, and their prices are reasonable.

I read the post for July 22, 2008 and had to respond. The service and quality of the food is absolutely superb and in fact, my wife and I are headed over to have some great food now! We always get a couple of extra take home items so that we can enjoy the wonderful food at home too. We know our Chines food and all I can say is this is our favorite resturaunt, and we have dined all across the country!

MC is probably one of the better chinese restaurants around. I have had the opportunity to dine their many times over the years and have never been dissapointed. I tend to stay more with the traditional dishes, and have found them to be consistently good. Their service is always good, the prices quite reasonable, and the location excellent.

This dining experience at Mandarin Cove was horrible. The food took an hour to cook and when we finally got the order everything was cold. The wontons were bland and tasteless and obviously from a freezer.

To be frank my Beef with Snow Peas smelled distinctly of urine and tasted like it was cooked in vinegar. I wish I was simply overreacting but both my girlfriend and roommate noticed the same qualities. My Girlfriends order of Sweet and Sour Chicken turned out to be pork, and tasted ?candied? not sweet and sour at all.

I don?t mean to write a review filled with pis$ and vinegar but at 11$ an entree I shouldn?t have to mean literally.

Pros: Lovely hardwood countertops. quick server attention

Cons: Extremely slow cooking times. Bad tasting food. Obscenely expensive for 'cart food'.

I don't know if it is the best Chinese in town, but I tried it on a whim one night and was impressed by the portion size, price, speediness, and of course the taste. If you're on the West side looking for Chinese I would definitely go there.

My spouse and I have eaten at Mandarin Cove for years and still haven't had everything on the menu. The lunch menu is a great buy for a reasonable price, and dinner is excellent and still reasonable. I particularly enjoy the Peking Duck, which is served Taiwan style with buns rather than pancakes (though you could request it either way) -- made me glad to be organized enough to order 24 hours in advance. Before the opera we always park upstairs and eat here, such a deal! (Reservations a good idea.)

My family and I have been going here for years. We have had family dinners, conventions dinners, engagement dinners, girls night out, an date nights here. We love it. The staff at this restaurant are wonderful, and the food is great as well. I have never had bad service here, and will highly recommend this place to anyone looking for great Chinese food and great service. To give you an example of exceptional service, I?ll tell you about this weekend. I was planning a group dinner for 15 people and needed a place to have it, I called up the restaurant and spoke with George. He was so helpful, he had menu ideas, offered to fax them to me, and suggestions on how we could get our party to the restaurant on time so that we could have dinner there, before they closed. He suggested that we pre-order our food , and was willing to work with me, as far as timing our dinner with the restaurant closing time. The thing that stood out to me, was the willingness of the restaurant to work with me. Now that?s what I call great customer service. I was so impressed with his willingness to help, that even though we ended up canceling our reservation due to our event ending, late, I felt that the help, and friendly service that I received from this restaurant was worth the mention. I have several group events planned for this year. I intend to return for all of those to the mandarin cove. We love George!

I eat here for lunch every week and never have had a bad meal. They have awesome hot and sour soup, I have never found any better. All entrees are great, but my favorite is the Kungpao Shrimp or Chicken. Lunch is very reasonably priced, dinner is a bit more of course. Try it, you'll love it.

I have eaten many times at this excellent restaurant and tried several entrees. All of the food is of high quality and great quantity. The service is fabulous-- the wait staff is courteous and quietly provides all your needs without having to ask. The dining area is spacious yet warm with great window views of the tree-lined street. Much of the ceiling is glass with plants everywhere. You can park for free in the parking garage of the bank adjoining the restaurant with a stamp from the restaurant. If you are enjoying dinner before or after a nearby show or opera, don't worry since the restaurant is accustomed to catering to opera goers and you can park for free the entire time you are eating and attending the opera less than a block away.

we recently moved to Portland, and have had amazing dining experiences thus far; we haven't eaten at a bad place yet. well, until last night at the Mandarin Cove. we have been craving chinese food for a while, so we turned to citysearch. after reading several 5 star write-ups, boasting the best chinese in town, we headed on over. we read about a happy hour, so thought we'd partake in that. upon entering the happy hour section, we were flooded with cigarette smoke, coupled with a cafeteria style ambiance. card tables were topped with cheap, shoddy looking vinyl tableclothes. it was so poorly lit, we couldn't see where the menus were located. my partner asked the girl working the bar where they were located, and she snapped that the happy hour food was over in the corner. we looked over to where she was pointing, and only saw a bowl of eggrolls, some peanuts and what appeared to be sweet and sour chicken under a heatlamp. again, it was so dark, it was hard to tell. the cigarette smoke was unbearable, so we headed over to the regular dining area. i have to say, it wasn't much better appearance-wise. the space is nice, it's sort of like a greenhouse, but the old faded floral pattern vinyl tablecloths and pepto bismol pink napkins didn't exactly create a nice atmosphere. we ended up ordering the appetizer platter and the sesame beef, after reading a review raving about how fantastic it is. the food came out quickly, but it was inedible. the appetizers were cold and tasted like that of frozen pre-made food. the sesame beef was absolutely disgusting. rubbery, overly sweet, and just odd. it must be a very low grade of beef, because it was just sickening. while we were sitting there, feeling sick to our stomachs, we started noticing how dirty the restaurant was. the carpets were filthy. here was something growing on the understide of our tablecloth (mold?). it's not cheap price-wise, we shelled out $40. i wouldn't take my worst enemy to this place. i still am cringing.

BEST CHINESE FOOD IN PORTLAND BY FAR FAR FAR...
I discovered mandarin cove about 9 years ago and have been there at least 8 times a year since. I am a very picky person with food and crave perfectly made meals. Mandarin Cove by far is the best Chinese place in Portland. If you want a fantastic meal order the Sesame Beef and the hot and Sour Soup. No one in Portland makes hot and sour soup like them; it is devine. I have taken many, many people to Mandarin cove and they have all agreed with me on their perfection of taste. I have been searching for some other restaurant that is comparable to this and found one that is very different and very authentic, but also very good. I was taken there by a chinese friend... who also loves Mandarin Cove. The person who gave an earlier review of "bad food" must have been talking about some other resturant, or must be used to those horrible chinese/american food restaurants. You know the ones I am talking about - the ones that sell cheese burgers. Never trust those restaurants. Also he/she talked about it being cheap, it is absolutely the most expensive Chinese restaurant in Portland I have been to yet. The dish that I love is Sesame Beef, which is 15.95 - not cheap. Other Chinese restaurants sell plates for just 8.99. For two people you cant leave there without spending a good $40 bill. Which is not expensive, but by no means cheap for chinese food in Portland. Yes, that previous bad review must have been a mistake. I RECOMMEND MANDARIN COVE WITH A 10

Yes, that previous bad review must have been a mistake. I RECOMMEND MANDARIN COVE WITH A 10

Pros: Great Taste, Great Service (most of the time), Excellent Quality

Cons: Its a little difficult to get to in downtown Portland.

.

I got there a little before they closed but by no means did they rush us out. I was pleasantly surprised by how polite and helpful they were five minutes before closing. Our meal was good also

On a warm summer day, consider grabbing the special take-out from Mandarin Cove. It is one low price (I think just $5), and you can grab it and go. I believe that they may have 2 or 3 options each day, but it's pretty streamlined. It's a great way to grab a good chinese lunch to take back to the office, or down to the waterfront a few blocks away to enjoy people-watching.

I have no idea why the rating is as high as it is (Citysearch slider rating tool stinks). I think the only reason this place is still in business is the location...and that it attracts mostly one-time customers (aka tourists).

I tried this place several times, and have been disappointed repeatedly. I work in the office building above so I kept giving Mandarin Cove the benefit of the doubt. NOT AGAIN.

Poor food, poor atmosphere, about the only good thing is it is cheap. However, you get what you pay for....the orange chicken at Panda Express is 10x better than this garbage! And the word 'chicken' should be used looselymine was more bone/gristle than anything else. One piece of chicken I had there was skin that had been breadedabsolutely disgusting. Also, their rice is terribledry and bland.

Boycott this place so it will go out of business and we can get a good restaurant in this spot~!!!!!

Save yourself the disappointment and go to the Bento place just north along 1st Street...

I absolutely adore their butterflied tempura shrimp, by far the biggest, best non-greasy fried shrimp I've ever had at a Chinese restaurant. Everything is cooked nicely without a lot of excess oils. The atmosphere is casual and inviting, service is quick and prices are average. If it weren't for the terrible parking of downtown area and the fact that their closed on Sundays, we would visit more often.

PROS: great food, quick and friendly service
CONS: parking is difficult and you may have to pay to park, not open Sundays

Our group of 7 had a reservation at 430 PM the night of a show. The staff placed us at a small table. We asked for a table for eight (complete with a center turn table so dishes could be passed easily). Staff refused even though the restaurant was empty. Because the table was so small, we did not have enough room for the dishes that were brought out... By the time we left, larger tables were still available. Our request was simple and not that big of a deal - until they made it a big deal. We won't go back.

We discovered Mandarin Cove tonight via "Delivered Dish" delivery service. I am picky about chinese food, particularly the quality of meat used. I was happily surprised by Mandarin Cove's food! The dishes we ordered (Tangy Chicken, House Fried Rice, Snow Peas with Water Chestnuts) were flavorful, the meat good quality, the water chestnuts lavish. The only thing we didn't enjoy were the egg rolls. However, the quality of the other dishes still won us over. I would eat there again and soon! We will have to go there sometime to experience the food in its "natural habitat".

The food here is fabulous. A refreshing break from nasty American-Chinese food. Dinner for 2 is reasonably priced, and they're willing to make substitutions for you if you don't eat certain things. The food came VERY quickly, but water glasses were neglected.

A rock solid excellent performer. I have eaten here multiple times over the past 2 years and have yet to be dissapointed by any dish. The dishes will appeal to those who are familiar with real Chinese food, not bland Americanized Chinese food.

Not the best Chinese food, but the food was good. The fried lobster covered in sweet sauce and sauteed green beans is an excellent choice. Although I wasn't to fond of the moo shu pork. Their variety of alcoholic and virgin beverages are plus, prices are o.k. considering they offer generous portions. The service was good, although we weren't seated right away, we had to wait for 10 minutes, even after making reservations and no was barely dining there. Overall it was pretty good.

The chicken used here is unrecognizable. The sweet and sour pork super doughy and greasy. I do not recommend this restaurant.

I have eaten at Mandarin Cove several times and frequently recommend it as an excellent place to go out for Chinese with guests. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is great. The only downside is that we have shown up to eat at Mandarin Cove several times and the restaurant has been closed. So, make sure you check the hours before dining here and that you don't plan on eating between the typical lunch and dinner hours. It is worth the effort though.
