I was spoiled by taking Yoga for the first time at the Movement Center ten years ago, because everywhere else I practiced just didn't compare! The ashram is a beautiful and peaceful setting , which promotes inner stillness and the unique blend of hatha yoga that is offered accommodates everyone at every level. The focus is on the breath with the movement. Although you will practice asanas both statically and dynamically, the synchronization of the breath with movement allows for a deep connection with your body. You will leave class feeling relaxed and at peace yet with your awareness heightened. The staff is wonderful and warm....and you will find a teacher that will inspire you and suit your particular needs. There are a wide variety of classes as well as workshops and retreats. If this is your first experience with yoga or not, I highly recommend the Movement Center at the Nityananda Institute!

Pros: ambience, type of yoga, teachers, class offerings

Cons: none that I can think of!

I had a great instructor for several years but he closed his studio, and I found The Movement Center about five years ago. The setting is exceptionally tranquil and lends itself to genuine yoga practice. The instructors offer considerable variety in emphasis and approach, but all are thoroughly qualified and highly skilled. Classes are small and instruction focuses on enhancing each individual's practice according to each one's capacities. The schedule offers various times of day and days of the week, and styles from gentle to strenuous. In addition to regular weekly classes, there are many special two and three day intensive workshops available from time to time, featuring notable master teachers and sometimes physician instructors. Prices are reasonable and consideration is given seniors. Street parking is readily available, and there are bike racks inside the grounds of the old Laurelhurst Manor with its gardens. A marked contrast with typical "gym" settings. Be sure to check their website: mcyoga (dot) com.

The Movement Center is a wonderful place to take yoga classes at any level. Even while learning the basics one comes away with a feeling of having made some positive changes, even if small. There is a wide variety of teachers, each of which adds a unique approach, while the poses covered overall are consistent. Classes are available for more advanced students as well.

th quality of the environment at the movement center combined with the high level of teaching create a wonderful space to practice yoga. the teachers are highly trained, thoughtful, considerate and work very hard to make sure everyone has an equal opportunity to experience the depth that yoga has to offer. the environment at the center is calm, tranquil and speaks to the depth of the meditation practice that occurs at the nityananda institute. this is by far the best yoga studio in the metro portland area

For anyone apprehensive about starting the practice of yoga, this is a great place to start. The Movement Center provides a relaxed environment, both in the neighborhood and within the building itself. There is a highly educational (and forgiving) quality to the instruction. For a center to help you find your center with the practice of yoga, it would be hard to find a better place than the Movemement Center. If cost is your concern, you definitely get you money's worth. This is the way it should be!

Pros: Relaxed, non-pressured, a TRUE experience!

Cons: Weird Parking, kind of a laissez-faire attitude

This is a great place to practice yoga! The instructors are absolutely wonderful, genuinely friendly, caring, and knowlegable. The atmosphere is non-threating, non-competitive and truly captures the physical, spiritual, and balancing side of yoga. It's not a seen and be seen type of place and does not have a "gym feel" to it. The surrounding area is gorgeous and tranquil.

Movement Center is great for all levels. I began with their beginner's immersion, which I recommend for any novice.

The Movement Center is tucked behind Sandy Boulevard among lovely old trees and beautiful gardens. Though located in the exquisite old Laurelhurst Manor, the studio has the advantage of a new high-tech floor with radiant heating, making an environment conducive to practicing yoga. The teachers all are well-trained and caring, with the attitude that yoga is not a competition. Stepping into the Movement Center is like taking a deep breath of pure air while basking in golden sunshine.

Pros: Environment, Variety of classes, Quality instruction

.

When i take a class at the Movement Center, i feel as though i am getting something extra; something i can't explain. A downward dog, for example, done in their pristine clear environment feels so much more vital than when done elsewhere for some reason. Maybe it is the instructors or the open minimally decorated space. Who knows? In any case i highly recommend. You will see the difference.

The Movement Center is truly an authentic Yoga expience. The atmosphere is permeated with the rich feeling of blissful yogic experience. This is not a gym atmosphere but a place for the pursuit of the true yogic goal of spiritual enlightenment, not heavy or preachy nor new-agey but real Yoga. Highly recommended for the interested novice or seasoned practioner.
