Avoid at all costs!
Port of St. Johns Apartments in Portland are the worst apt I have lived in. Beyond the awful apartments they will more than take your move in deposit. Under false pretenses they will charge you well over a thousand dollars upon move out. Also the manager entered our apartement many times without written notice.
Wish I could give 0/5 stars.

They wont return the deposit no matter what, they wont take care of the roaches(pest control), buildings are full of mold, bad quality paint, worn out carpets, old appliances, filthy on site laundry, honestly they suck.

For cheap apartments in okay neighborhoods, these are the folks to rent from. Sure, they're a corporation and apartment buildings are managed by different folks, but I had a great experience as a renter. The apartment was spacious and affordable, and the landlord was quick to respond to complaints. Not the prettiest buildings, but still worth renting if you want to live in a trendy/convenient/historic neighborhood.

I rented 2 apartments from American and they were always clean and well kept. They have several apartments around town and alot of them allow pets which is nice! They would always come right out if anything needed fixing and are reasonably priced.

I currently live at one of their properties. Thank goodness I'm moving out at the end of the month. They are really unprofessional. We recently discovered one of our roommates was never actually on the lease because the apartment manager just forgot to fill out the paperwork.
It once took them over a week and a half to fix our oven after the door fell off because the machine was so ancient. Seriously, a really terrible company. I have not had one positive experience. At least it's cheap. That is the only upside.

Get everything in Writing, or you may lose your deposit.
The amount you pay and are told you "Will get back" is not accurate. They use a arbitrary code to determine what if anything you will get back. Don't ask them for more info, they will not give it to you.
So if you have the 5-700$ to throw away, go ahead. But, if you count on this company being honest and returning your money as they say they will, you might want to rent somewhere else.

This company gives you an extremely low level of service. They are very dishonest. They tend to pick incompetent property managers who cannot do their jobs. BEWARE.
Cons: Inability to make repairs in a timely manner, incompetent property managers, difficult to work with, rude
