As the other 112 reviews state this place is a book lovers dream. Lots of shelves to brows and a passionate staff. I like the number of book signings they have with local authors. They get the more famous ones in, but they make an effort

Powell's is awesome! It is a for real city of books, and there hasn't been one book I have been looking for that I couldn't find. Plus, their selection of used books is HUGE. Check them out, and plan to spend a few hours there!

Still hanging on to this uncomfortable encounter years later? Must have been a bad day for both of you. I have had so many wonderful experiences at Powells City of Books that I can't even count them. I have both bought and sold books

I adore people from all walks of life. People that are different and that can share their thoughts/opinions/life experiences.

However, when entering Powell's books you aren't greeted with a warm, friendly welcome. You instantly feel

Here??s the deal I love Powel??s but I can always afford to get my books there. I would not order because they have lost my orders before. I also have a hard time dealing with the employees. When you ask them for help looking for a book you find they really don??t read much. They are also rude. I read a lot. My daughter loves to pull books of the bookshelves, so when the bottom shelf is full I sell them. Powel??s is not the place to do this. $2 for a $25 dollar book and they are rude. I went up to the counter to exchange and the buy was aggressive verging on hostile. I end up for 15 books with $7 cash or $15 in store credits. He treated me like I was desperate for the money instead of desperate to keep my house to be clean. Minus the prices, lost orders, and employees you can spend days there looking at the books. It is great if you know what you want and can do a one stop shop.

Cons: expensive, rude employees who are unknowledgeable

You can't trust Powell's online orders! If you are a student, or ordering a book for a present, don't use Powell's online. Even if they confirm your order, if the book runner discovers the book has already been sold , THEY DON'T TELL YOU! Powell's instead waits for days and days until the rest of your order has arrived before sending you anything at all. This is apparently a matter of policy. This means those textbooks you're waiting for, may very well not be coming, despite you're getting a confirmation order. According to the employee I spoke with, this happens at least once out of every 20 online orders. That is ridiculous!

What a fabulous bookstore. You can find virtually any book you've been looking for and more.

I never leave Powell's without overspending.

I'm a book lover and I love this place. Best selection of anything and everything I could ever want! Great place to grab a book, some coffee and hang out. Perfect if you're checking out downtown and want to walk there. Driving is a little less wonderful, but any traffic or parking issues are worth it. I love that place!!!

Powell's is the best. It's four stories, and has every book you could ever want. We could spend hours looking around in there. They also have a "rare book room" with books from the 1500s and earlier, rare books, etc. Very neat. Highly recommended to pop in there with out of town guests and check it out.

Insanely huge selection....I can get lost in this place for hours, and I do. Prices are retail...sometimes discounted. Have always had a good experience. Sometimes it can get hectic at choke points where it gets crowded...and I think a lot of people just come in to use the bathroom because I have seen some LONG lines there. Best overall bookstore in town.

great selection, but might as well go to amazon and pay a 1/4th the price.
hardly any used books, and they might only save $2 over the new price.
Great selection though.

OK, so I have been reading the reviews about how the staff is rude; to be honest I have been going there for years. I have only come across friendly people there.
Though as someone who does work retail I have noticed over the years their is a growing trend that customers think they should be treated like royalty. Before you think it no I do not work at Powell's. To me, as long as someone is not rude to my face I have never cared. I don't know maybe I'm weird I go to a store to buy something not bond with wage slaves. Sorry for the long rant, I just can't stand people who think that a store should think it's such a great honor that you spend your money there.

Cons: none really I have never had a issue with them

This place is a haven for haughty, hateful hipsters... they work here. You know: the arrogant, mean-spirited overflow from Reed College in the southest quadrant of the city.

If you like books, this is a great place to visit. But the problem is the attitude of the employees... it completely overshadows the rest of the experience and makes it completely uncomfortable. They do everything they can to make you feel inferior, all so they can feed their insatiable, wanna-be-French-sophisticates, egos.

If you like the experience of sneering, pretentious nastiness AND books, all in the same store, shop here. But if you're an actual, self-respecting human being who just wants books AND to come away still feeling halfway decent about yourself, go visit Borders or Barnes & Noble instead.

Pros: Just the books, but bookstores abound.

Cons: Awful, terrible, miserable employees

Powell's touts itself as a used bookstore. In reality, maybe 1 in 50 books are used and the used books cost the same as the new books. The selection is great, and it is a blast to peruse the shelves for hours on end. But if you want to find a bargain, find it elsewhere. I usually find the books I want by going to Powell's then go online to buy them. In short this place is priced for tourists with fat wallets.

I have to say, I miss musty used bookstores with shelves and shelves of roughly organized books for a good bargain. If you're ever in Eugene, go to Smith Family Bookstore. That place is book love.

Although I hate driving downtown I love the Powell's on Burnside. They have their own parking garage and have the largest selection of books I have ever seen. Also, every year around the holidays I trade in my used books for Christmas presents (books, gift cards, gifts). They really do have something for everyone. I have found the staff very helpful.

Pros: I love the downtown store!

Cons: Hawthorne: someone always hits you up for money outside and line is in doorway.

.

Sure, I love the selection, but at the main store they are have always been rude and obnoxious. This is NOT representative of PDX. The Hawthorne store employees are much friendlier and helfpul than those at the main Burnside City of Books. So, leave Burnside for the tourists and locals stick with Hawthorne.

I think it really says something when a business is a huge tourist attraction AND locals still love it. For example, no one I know who lives in Portland proper goes anywhere near Saturday Market. Yes, Powells a business and has a reasonable (4 times is bad? Do you really want to know the mark ups on your shampoo, your pens or your car?) mark up. Plus, what a resource. An enormous book store where you can find or order virtually everything, sit and read all day long, and research things that the library may not have in stock. It does have its downsides but I'm not complaining.

Pros: Selection, Store Huge-ness, Helpful Staff, Great Events

Cons: Crowds!

.

whoever said that powell's book buyers low ball sellers surprised me because it's almost the same amount of money when you sell to any of the stores in portland that buy clothes. it's really not that bad.

and the staff are extremely nice people. not egotistical or cold/cruel at all. whoever has had a bad experience was either having a bad day or expects people to kowtow at their presence.

.

I concur, there is something about this place that breeds hatred amongst the staff toward customers. Many are just plain rude, others are unhelpful. It sort, of reminds me of what might happen if the DMV and USPS got together and decided to open a bookstore. Bland, uncomfortable, and unfriendly staff, smug in the satisfaction that they have permanent job tenure. Perhaps they need to get *real* jobs now that they finally graduated from Reed.

Pros: Location, slection, hours

Cons: attitude, where are the magizines?!

.

This is what great book stores are all about. If you are new get a map, plan on at least 90mins of browsing and bring a friend. Java in the cafe is made by real baristas not the wanna be type at Starschmucks. The staff actually knows where books are and how to order them so ask if you can't find what you are looking for.

I'll get straight to the point: Powell's is vast and quite the Wonderland of books. It markets itself brilliantly as a place of rich tradition and character.

With that said, on the whole they really are a conceited and snotty lot, and even outwardly cruel to customers if their hatefully egotistical mood turns sadistic for sheer amusement or whatever. They seem to regard many of their customers as dirty little vermin to be scowlingly "endured". I really don't like the place, and prefer to buy my books at one of the major chains like Borders or Barnes & Noble.

Nope... I don't much like them at all.

Best selection on the planet? Maybe. Cool place to browse? Sure. Do you get a fair price for the books you sell them? Um, not so much. I personally watched the book buyer price just * one * of my stacks of books at $185... she gave me $45 for them. For those of you not paying attention, basically that means that they're charging you 4 times what they're paying for those books. I'd call that substantial mark-up. They know they've got you trapped since you can donate books to lots of places, but don't have many options for selling them... so they low ball you. Their prices have never seemed all that extraordinary to me, and now I know why.

Powell's has all the elements of a great, nay, awesome bookstore: knowledgeable and friendly staff, a vast selection of new and used books (so you can find almost anything you're looking for or didn't know you were looking for -- at the right price) in almost any topic you can imagine. All that, and a coffeeshop too. On any given day, Powell's bustles with readers and booklovers of all ages. Need a cookbook? Want to find an obscure monograph on a favorite artist? Want to check out the latest bestseller you read about in the Times? Looking for that out-of-print sci-fi novel? Or how about a children's book about Chinese New Year? Chances are, you'll find it at Powell's or be directed to it on their shelves by one of their very helpful staff. I adore this place -- my only regret is that it only exists in Portland. But hey, I can always use another excuse to return to PDX.

This is my most favori-tist bookstore on the planet. If you are a fan of books, you must go here! I could be here forever listing all of its fabulous qualities. Needless to say, I get lost in here for hours. Every time I'm in Portland, this is a necessary stop. Parking is a bit limited. Powell's own garage is not very big. If you end up parking on the street, be prepared to bring a lot of change for the meters. I recommend getting there early.

Powell's is one of the 7 Wonders of Portland! For most visitors, it is on their must-see, must-do list as it is the largest bookstore in the Northwest. For over 35 years, Powells has fed Portlander's voracious book appetite with four floors filled to the rafters with new and used books. There is also a coffee shop on sight, so between books and coffee, what more could you ask for on a rainy day in Portland?

PROS: great website
CONS: can get crowded on weekends

Now don't get me wrong, I love books. I don't love paying over $110.00 for books that I have to buy for school and being treated badly by staff. Keep in mind it's money coming out of my own pocket. I almost said forget it and went somewhere else. I have never in my life been spoken to the way I have at this store. The selection was huge, but very poorly organized. The "Info," center is not as it is described. The employee did not want to give me any info. She just replied in a shrewd manner to "read the signs." I suggest Powell's Books reads the signs posted on this page and get rid of it's rude employees. If it was my business I would want satisfied long term customers not customers irritated by unhappy staff members.

Powell's is the size of a city block and filled to bursting with books- new, used, out of print, you name it. It's a real treasure-trove of reading material and a delight to anyone who loves to read. If they don't have it, they can find it and send it to you and they take online orders as well. If you come plan to stay a while and wander through their unbelivably huge selection of books. They are truly a book-lover's refuge.

Powells has a huge selection of books, so you can easily end up spending hours just browsing here. It's a pretty great place to do that. I don't visit Portland often enough to check their selection often, but I can imagine that if I did, I would end up spending lots of time here...
I felt like their selection on certain foreign languages was especially good.

The powell bookstore is pretty famous in portland and very well know among students. here, they carried the largest selection of books, both used and new. The bookstore is like an old castle, in it are stairs and stairs leading up to the levels that store more and more book. the foreign language section was as huge as a highschool library, they carried tons comics tons of music cds as well as dvds. you can sell your old college textbook or old novels there and get a discount on the next purchase or get cash. i was so glad my friend show me this place!

This is one of the best bookstores that I have ever stepped foot into. They have just about anything you are looking for. I could spend hours at a time at this store searching for books that I wanted and looking for books that might be interesting. If you love reading you gotta check this store out its the best. I don't ever come out of this store empty handed sometimes I could buy too much.

Who can review bookstores in prtland without hitting on Poweels? One city block. Many stories. This has become one of my favorite places as it almost always has what I am looking for, and often in a used copy so it is cheaper. I have found that thier prices for rare books can be beat on the internet quite easily, but for convience, they are a five star event. I can spend half the day wandering about the shelves, going from section to section. They have sale books easily grouped on shelves in between the stacks, nicely showcasing them. On their website they sometimes offer a postage pass (shipping for 1 year for one low price). They also host numerous bookcluns and author readings/signings. Pick up a calender when you are there and find another excuse to return.

PROS: convience
CONS: prices can be a bit high

On their website they sometimes offer a postage pass (shipping for 1 year for one low price). They also host numerous bookcluns and author readings/signings. Pick up a calender when you are there and find another excuse to return.

PROS: convience
CONS: prices can be a bit high

Powells is a world unto itself. It offers books of any kind in topics you couldn't even imagine. It is great for finding ubscure books and also best sellers.

Most books are fairly prices either regular new price or a reasonable used price (a little higher than you might find other places, but more you are more likely to find what you're looking for.) If you're looking for a rare or obscure book Powells is the place.

While they may have a huge inventory I haven't found perusing to be the easiest to do, there are so many catagories that you can easily get lost in the store.

While huge and maybe a little disorienting, Powells is a not to miss in the Portland area.

PROS: Huge Inventory
CONS: Easy to get lost

For anyone who likes reading, this is a goldmine. The selection spans many floors - I could spend days in this place. It even has a foreign language section, in which I got a French book as a present for a Francophone friend.

I love to read and when I found Powell's, I was in heaven! I like a variety of genres including fiction, nonfiction (especially historical), and self-help. They have everything there! I am a history buff and found a lot of really great books about the history of England that were in great condition and that were a fraction of what you would pay for them in a regular bookstore. They are definitely worth checking out!

You can't live in, visit, or go near Portland without going to Powell's. You can get rid of your unwanted books, then spend HOURS browsing. I love used bookstores, and this is my all-ime favorite. You find all kinds of interesting old books for CHEAP. The staff recommendations on the shelves are helpful, and the coffee shop in the corner is convenient. The only thing that needs work is the parking situation, but you can park in or take the MAX to the Smart Park by the Galleria and ride the streetcar over for free,

If you're looking for books in Portland this is the place to go, the selection is unmatched. If you're looking for staff who treat you respectfully or say 'excuse me' when they walk in front of you or start stocking shelves directly in front of you while you're browsing, this is not the place to go. Also, I have twice been turned down when trying to sell books because the bookseller hinted strongly that they were suspicious about where I got my books. No one came out and said "we think you stole these books", but I got a very suspicious vibe from the book buyer. Why? No idea, other that I keep my books in excellent condition and many of them looked new. God forbid I take care of my stuff. Next time I sell, I'll trash the books a little first.

Powells is the greatest book store in the whole world. If it's not at Powells then you'll never find it. There are brand new books, used, and out of print books. The staff is knowledgable and the store is laid out in an easy to understand fashion. They buy back books too, so you can use credit to get new books. You can't go wrong with Powells.

An alternative to the ordinary rainy day activities, and probably a lot cheaper as well. Get lost in the countless rooms of Powells headquarters on Burnside. Ask the information desk if you get overwhelmed, or just browse around the shelves. Customers are welcome to read and stay for as long as they desire

PROS: booooks galore

While I'm not one of the "B&N is evil" people, I definitely prefer to shop here if it's an option. Powell's is, as everyone else has stated, massive. It's quite likely that you'll get lost, despite the inventive color-coded system. They will buy back your used books, usually for about 25% of the MSRP (NOT a great deal, but hey, cash in your pocket or credit at the store). The staff is friendly and SO knowledgable. There's parking around the store, but it's hit or miss, and the only free place is their parking garage. This is an experience in and of itself, because it's often full and your keys must be forfeited to the attendant, and it's a death-defying experience: spots are TINY and you must honk when turning a corner, so as to avoid an accident (one lane, and completely blind). Yikes!

PROS: AMAZING selection, independently owned
CONS: Small selection of audiobooks, prices aren't as low as at the big stores

I've noticed that Powell's doesn't seem to offer the best prices in Portland any longer. Their vast selection of books (on 5 floors) definitely outweighs the high prices, but it'd be nice to buy affordable good books.

What can I say....it's Powells. There's no place like it. With a store the size of a large city block, the selection is great for used and new. And you can take books into the coffee shop and spend an afternoon there.

This is by far the best bookstore I have ever expereinced. They have new and used books and multiple languages, too. They have online access: powells.com if you want to check before you go. The staff is treated well, and , in turn treat customers like friends. If they don't have a rare book you are looking for it can likely be ordered through a sister store. Endless rooms and eternal heights of lovely, lovely books! The atmosphere is amazing, I wish I lived there!

PROS: Free parking with purchase

This is the biggest independent and used bookstore in the world. I knew about them from powells.com years before I even lived in Portland. The place is a varitable city block of books. It's a very dangerous place to go if you are a bibliophyle. I've never escaped the place for under $50. They have everything. Literally. Used books are stacked with the new, so you can often get a used copy of something for cheap. There's a nice little coffe shop in there too.

PROS: They have everything; often there are cheap used copies.
CONS: No parking

Powells is one of the best places to get books-- or just look for them. The rare book room on the top floor is well worth a look (they even have a first edition of The Hobbit).

However, in the three years that I've lived in the area, their prices seem to have gone up quite a bit, and the prices at which they buy books from individuals have gone down.

PROS: Just about any book you could ever need is here.
CONS: Prices are going up and the amount they buy back at is going down.
